Exquisite plot, wry humor and twist ending dominate his works. Those surprising but logical endings and article’s style are the most brilliant in all of the highlights. This thesis mainly analyses O. Henry’s surprising but logical endings and style of his famous works such as The Gift of the Magi , The Last Leaf an and The Cop and the Anthem. These O. Henry-style endings impress readers ,and at the same time ,help him express his ideas completely and vividly. So this thesis mainly analyses how O.Henry set the plot to achieve the desired ending effect, and how the twist ending help idea-expression.Key Words: artistic styles, O. Henry-style ending, humanity; social realityChapter1 IntroductionO·Henry is commonly associated with the short story and the masterful ironic “O·Henry Twist”. A prolific writer, O·Henry wrote most often about New York City, where he spent his later years, He has been called “the American De Maupassant”.Years of hardships, vagrancy and prison supplied O·Henry with abundant material for writing. The tragedy in his own life —the bad luck that seemed to bind him —had taught him a chivalrous tenderness for the unlucky, a sympathetic understanding of the underdogs, and this compassion of his is evident in most of his short stories. O·Henry’s stories about New York City —the best of which are included in The Four Million—are his most famous. His works in.The Four Billionaire full of humor. His stories are amusing, flippant, flat and filled with irony and sentiment. Drawing directly on his experiences, he combined realism with a world of his own. Commonly recurring themes in O·Henry’s short stories are those of deception, mistaken identity, the effect of coincidence, the inexorable nature of fate, and the resolution of seemingly insurmountable difficulties separating two love it.Over recent hundreds of years, works of O·Henry’s have been published for several editions, and always attracting a great number of readers. O·Henry‟s writing is seen as straightforward and simple, written in plain language. His stories may rely on a sameness of plot, but the sharp, unexpected twist at the end is still his distinctive trademark today.(田2005:5)As readers, we like O·Henry’s stories very much because we can get much fun from them. Lively characters, humorous style, and the surprising ending which leave us endless thinking, are the main factors to attract and strike us.Chapter 2 O. Henry ‘s article style--humor2.1 O. Henry ‘s article styleO. Henry good at describing the United States in particular people living in New York. His novel, witty language, the result is often surprising; because of the many descriptions of the characters and full of life, as the "Encyclopedia of American life with humor." There are representative collection of short stories, "King and cabbage", "4,000,000" and "the fate of the road." Some of the famous, such as "love at the expense" and "Police and the Hymn," "rent furnished rooms" and "The Gift of the Magi" and "the last piece of rattan leaf" to make his reputation in the world. He is a writer with a unique style, humorous works, humorous wit, vivid descriptions, concise text. Vivid description of things from the profound understanding and extensive knowledge. He was good to observe things and the accumulation of knowledge. Good at capturing life Ironically, while the wealth to the philosophy of the dramatic scenes from the grasp of the subtle characteristics of the image using the language Painted, so that the people of flesh and blood, into the Xu-xu Health.2.2 HumorO. Henry once wrote: "the nature of my jokes is amiable, irony, and never make someone angry." This is his opinion of his humor, his satire, but again not ironic.he is on the basis of goodwill, and often contain the true meaning of life in accessible short stories . And another effect is that this kind of humor played down the tragic role, so readers are more likely to accept. In addition to the humorous irony, O. Henry is good at capturing the ironic and aboundin life philosophy of dramatic scene, with the characteristics of writing outline of cartoon characters, the plot of the chrono set at the same time, the ending with unexpected knot,All this make readers in dismay want to find the deep connotation of the story, make the reader have to exclamation story of fair and reasonable, idea of exquisite. In addition to unxepecting ending ,the sequence in the novel text became O. Henry another feature of the nove.In O’Henry’s short story “The Cop and the Anthem”, he ma kes use of the vocabulary mistake and hyperbole not only endowing figures with fresh image but also obtaining definite humorous effect. It’s a concrete display of the comedic writing style and at the same time it hints at the tragic fate of the protagonist. There is such a paragraph in the article:But as Soapy set foot inside the restaurant d o o r the head waiter’s eye fell upon his frayed trousers and decadent shoes. Strong and ready hands turned him a b o u t and conveyed him in silence and haste to the sidewalk and averted the ignoble fate of the menaced mallard.Soapy’s f irst “long for being arrested” plan i s to eat extravagantly in a luxurious restaurant—“a roast duck is almost enough!” But as he sets foot inside the restaurant door, the head waiter’s eye falls upon h i s“decadent shoes”. Decadent is always used to d e s c r i b e life style or consciousness concept. The author uses it to describe Soapy’s broken shoes and exaggerates the actuality of that broken shoe to a laughable extent. Then the author also uses the humorous remarks “turn round that r o a s t duck’s nearly being killed fate “to indicate Soapy’s hope “to eat gratis is vanished.”Chapter3 Unique O-style ending methodO. Henry's trademark is the surprising ending that each of his stories contains. He sets a story moving in one direction, and just when the reader is convinced of the general direction of the narrative, the story will be completely reversed. This kind of expected but reasonable ending which called O.Henry’s ending may be a litt le sorrowful but it still gives the readers some hope, which is so-called “O.Henry’s humor(smile with tears)”And if we look back to the total story, the ending seems logical and plausible. As a “plot-maker”, and designer of incident, he is an amazing geniu s. No one can do better than him to holds the reader in “suspense”More than that, the reader scarcely knows that he is suspended until the very close of the story. Just as turns on the lights and the whole tale is revealed in its entirety. He uses this device of dramatic and humorous effect in the short story collection The Four Million which including “The Gift of the Magi ”, and “The Cop and the Anthem”“the Service of Love”“The last Leaf.”He often stresses on something important but not the most importan t in his works. The most important part always seems to write incidentally, which been the most circumscriptive reader may if more it.When the stories end in a totally unexpected but reasonable way ,we can do nothing but cheer for O.Henry’s literary talent.3.1 Improbable Coincidence (The Gift of the Magi)The novel“The Gift of the Magi” is about a young couple that is short of money but desperately wants to buy each other Christmas gifts. Unknown to Jim, Della sells her most valuable possession, her beautiful hair, in order to buy platinum as the chain for Jim's watch; unknown to Della, Jim sells his most valuable possession, his watch, to buy jeweled combs for Della's hair. In the end ,both gifts became useless——short-haired Della got a comb andJim got a chain for an already-sold watch. What a surprising coincidence! However, when we look back, we can find that O.Henry had already given us some suggestions.”Now, there were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair.” This description is related to how they got the money for gifts and what they bought for each other. The author used a casual and vague tone deliberately so that few people would think over its meaning before seeing the ending. So the ending turns out to be unexpected but reasonable. This coincidence is filled with complex emotions. People feel touched by the long lasting true love between the young couple and at the same time ,pity for them for their “unwise” gifts and their cruel bitter life.Though confronted with cruel reality and dull daily routine, Della and Jim can never change their eagerness toward love. To them the most valuable material possession is so slight and insignificant ,when compared with the spiritual possession of love romance.Perhaps the gifts were "unwise" as the author says, but, as he further writes, "let it be said that of all who give gifts, these two were the wisest.”In Th e Gift of the Magi , we feel so pity that Della has her precious long hair cut. But to our surprise ,Jim has sold the watch to buy the jeweled tortoise-shell combs for her wife’s hair. O.Henry does not end on the note of irony and surprise but gives to what he calls his uneventful coincidence of two foolish children the appearance of a little parable with a significant meaning. The magi , he reminds the reader ,were wise men who brought gifts to the Christ child. As for Jim and Della, the are the magi. This is the ending of the story with O.Henry’s own style.Chapter4 The Main Theme of O’Henry’s WorksIn his works, O.Henry presents the panorama of the American people to readers with ironic and humorous tone. O.Henry is sympathetic with the poor; he praises the human virtues and denounces human defeats. Humanity, as the eternal theme of O.Henry’s works, endows his works with perpetual artistic charm. Human being has many virtues from ancient times to the present. They are kind, brave, honest, hard-working, polite, thrifty, generous, and hospitable and so on. Some people pay a great deal in order to maintain these virtues, they sacrifice their own happiness even life for the lofty love and friendship; they help others without asking for rewards and regard it as a pleasure; they give up their own treasure and chance to others etc. Such people bring love and fine things to the world; they are the ones who endow the world with light and hope.Human beings have many defects, too. Sometimes t h e y are lazy, rapacious, gluttonous, officious, vain, arrogant, shameless, cowardly, impetuous etc. They benefit themselves at the expense of others, they never show mercy and sympathy to the poor in order to make money, they realize their own aims by hook or by crook etc. Their evil deeds make the world vicious. By exposing the human defects and the dark sides of the world, O.Henry wants to awaken p e o p l e’s conscience and deepest desire for all good things, so that people can use their efforts to save and cleanse the whole world.O. Henry creates a short stories which he could dominate the world , and the world as a whole is with light grey. O. Henry won't go to describe the upper-class life :a luxury and dissipation life.In contrary, he makes his writing focuse on a nobody wholives in the small world. From this world , O. Henry have created the world according to his own idea, in which expresses his sympathy as well as hate, reveals a "law of the jungle" in a capitalist society orthe rule of "the great fish eat the small one". All this, we can visit O. Henry's world from the point of O. Henry's works .Besides social deformities, O. Henry didn't forget to find a unique legend in that society. In a corner of the world, there are blooming love, friendship, lofty flowers with a spirit of sacrifice , beautiful soul and divine emotion interweaves the bright side of another society. This is mainly can be found in the part of his representative works. In The Gift of the Magi ,husband and wife be able to give up the things they proud - long hair and watch, for the Christmas gifts. Although ultimately failed to achieve, but the flower of love is brightly blossoming. For example:But on an unusually quiet corner Soapy came to a standstill. Here was an old church, quaint and rambling and gabled. Through one violet-stained window a soft light glowed, where, no doubt, the organist loitered over the keys, making sure of his mastery of the coming Sabbath anthem. For there drifted out to Soapy’s ears sweet music tha t caught and held him transfixed against the convolutions of the iron fench.<The Cop and the Anthem> The hymn of music brought homeless to restart the courage of life, which reflects the virtuous sideof societyChapter 5 ConclusionTotally speaking, in O. Henry’s works, the events of some short stories are arranged in the specific order which exceed reader’s normal expectation to the arrangement of those events in his works, make the ending unpredictable and strange. O. Henry deliberately designs the little tricks with words, for he is a master of language and not its slave. These unexpected but reasonable endings, in many conditions ,are the mos t remarkable parts in the novel. They also engage something profound in the human psyche and reflect social reality in that age . device that would become identified with his name. Wit, irony, cleverness, individuality and local color are also traditional earmarks of the typical O’Henry story. In addition, his warmth of human understanding and sympathy with the “underdog” give many of his stories poignancy. In memory of his great contribution to American literature, American literary circles set up Henry Award in 1918.References[1] Medrick, Fred. An introduction to American literature[M]. He uses the unique language to describe the love and sacrifice of the young couple and reflects the social reality of the United States during that hard period of time. The young couple use their most valuable things to buy Charismas gifts but made a fool’s result. The short story reflects that people pursue materials which are beyond their reality because of the consumer culture. In this short story, the young couple buy gifts to their beloved people, and they never lose their nice moral spirit. They give in to the consumerism but they also persist their love. They have the bitter of losing their valuable possession, but they are paid back for their love from each other. They are also sweet.Key words: bitter, sweet, consumerism, The Gift of the MagiO. Henry is the pen name of William Sydney Porter. He is one of the most famous short novelists in the United States in the early 20th century. He is one of the three leading short stories. His stories are both interesting and enlightening with profound meaning. His short stories expose the darkness of capitalism from different angles, describe the difficult life of lower class and praise their sincere friendship, love and desire to happy life. His stories usually win the artistic effect within the plot and pay much more attention to the character’s artistic power. O. Henry's short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization and clever twist endings. His stories have surprise endings frequently. Many authors wrote plot twist endings, but O. Henry stories were much more humorous. A twist of plot turns on an ironic or coincidental circumstance. It is a typical of O. Henry's short stories. His stories are also known for witty narration. Most of O. Henry's stories are set in his own time, the early 20th century. Many stories take place in New York City and talk about the most ordinary people: clerks, policemen, waitresses and so on. His stories move so many people in the world for such a long time. Many people all over the world make researches in those works and found their profound values constantly.Consumerism is a kind of consumption model to satisfy people’s needs and desire. The most important reason is that the United States has become the world's Number One economic power at that time. “In the 1880s, the value of industrial production is more than the value of agricultural output. The revolution of social economic pushes up the consumerism in the United States” (Zhang Wenwei 2008). People purchase goods and consume materials in excess of their basic needs. The Industrial Revolution increased the availability of consumer goods, although it was still primarily focused on the capital goods sector and industrial infrastructure, such as mining, steel, oil, transportation networks, communications networks, industrial cities and financial centers. “The advent of the department store represented a paradigm shift in the experience of shopping. For the first time, customers could buy an astonishing variety of goods, all in one place, and shopping became a popular leisure activity”(Wikipedia). In the late 19th century to early 20th century, “money takes place of God and the moral is broken down.”(Zhugang 2001) Consuming is a status symbol. American people got rid of Puritanism and focused on enjoyment. They put consumerism in the first way and the main target in their life. They showed their individual styles by consuming. Consumerism is the symbol of happiness in their life.O. Henry wrote many short stories, and every short story has a deep meaning. They are filled with joys and sorrows of life. The readers can learn much truth from them. The Gift of the Magi is a ridiculous but movable short story. It is about a young couple who are short of money but want to buy each other Christmas gifts. Della has beautiful hair and Jim has a gold watch which comes from his father's and his grandfather's. They are all proud of their tre asures. Queen of Sheba’s jewels suffer a shadow because of Della’ shiny hair. King Solomon envied Jim’s gold watch. “Unbeknownst to Jim, Della sells her most valuable possession, her beautiful hair, in order to buy a platinum fob chain for Jim's watch; while unbeknownst to Della, Jim sells his own most valuable possession, his watch, to buy jeweled combs for Della's hair.” (Wikipedia) This short story reflects the difficulty and bitter of the lower class of American when they face money and love.Christmas is one of the most important festivals in western countries. In this day, people will buy something for their beloved people as gifts. Della and Jim are too poor to buy expensive gifts. At the课号:DK3Y41A00 课程名称:英美文学史及作品选读(2) 阅卷教师:潘家云班级:10英语4班学号:104175421 姓名:俞扬帆成绩:beginning of the short story, the author has deliberately exag gerated Della’s poor life condition. Those are all the money—one dollar and eight-seven cents. This money is from different people where Della buys things with a bargain. They have a rough life. They lived in a simple house without many furnishes. It is li ke a “mendicancy squad” (O. Henry, Baidubaike). They cannot afford the expensive consuming. It is obvious that they will have a tragedy when they buy luxury which is beyond their reality. Zhugang said that at first people focus on why love in spirit should show by gifts in material. In the late 19th century to early 20th century, capitalist developed very fast in America and the factories produced a number of goods. The consumer culture was popular among people from different levels of the American race. “T he value of gift is beyond the value of love”(zhugang 2008). In America, families like Della and Jim’s could hardly keep their economy balanced. So it is impossible for them to buy a good gift for the other people. This poor couple buy expensive gift is very funny. They do not admit their poverty in potential. They think that everyone is equal in goods. They cannot know their ability to buy what they can afford. They use their own most valuable possession to buy gifts for their beloved person to match their most valuable possession. Ironically, the gifts is only for them to watch but cannot use. The consumerism results in their blindness to society and their value is changing. Della wants to buy a rare and valuable thing for her husband as Christmas gift. It is a funny drama. When Della buys things from shops, she is often shamed by bargain. This reflects that people use the consuming to measure social status. If people have not enough money to buy gifts, they can make gifts by themselves. But at the consumerism society, people get used of expressing love by consuming. The higher consuming, the deeper love. The moral is collapse. It is a world which money and consumer first at that time. However, in the consumerism society, the young couple is also sweet. They do not lose all moral to pursue the material. They buy gifts for each other to express their love. Della is a little worried after cutting off her hair. Because her husband loves her hair very much and she fears that she is not as beautiful as before. Although she knows that, she could not help thinking anymore instead of buying a valuable gift for her husband. She considers this is the fittest thing for Jim. Because they want to buy the most matched gift to each other, and they are influenced by the consumer culture, they buy their gifts in a not intelligent way.课号:DK3Y41A00 课程名称:英美文学史及作品选读(2) 阅卷教师:潘家云班级:10英语4班学号:104175421 姓名:俞扬帆成绩:The two gifts are very suitable for their beloved person in their view, although they have to pay their own most valuable possession. But we cannot deny their deep love. They are sweet. They receive love from each other. The author emphasizes that Della counts money pitifully and hardly, especially through “several” repeated action to let us feel the difficulty of Della’s life. This description indicates Della’s shy and kind-hearted personality. At the same time, it also allows us to deeply understand the poor’s life in that money society. Della decides to sell her beautiful hair eventually. This decision is painful and heavy. However, she feels pleased, because she loves her husband. So she would prefer to suffer losses. Because of the love, she researches the gift from one shop to another. She wants to buy the best gift to match his husband’s gold watch. Although they live in a consumerism society, this love is still true and precious, ignoring they show it in a money way.In the late 19th century to early 20th century, with the development of economy, money is the first. It is a phenomenon that people like to consume to show their society status. In this society, Jim sells his gold watch to buy the comb for Della’s beautiful hair and Della’s hair has cut off to buy a chain for Jim’s gold watch. The young couple buy gifts to each other in a blind way. They result in a ridiculous ending. But we also should admit that it reflects their deep love.References[1]Consumerism. 欧亨利《麦琪的礼物》英文读后感TheMeaningofGift

欧亨利《麦琪的礼物》英文读后感TheMeaningofGiftThe Meaning of GiftO.Henry (1862-1910) was a prolific American short-story writer, a master of surprise endings, who wrote about the life of ordinary people in New York City. Although his plot is full of coincidence, the surprise ending is his feature and appeals to the reader so much. He is one of three short story masters in the world.(O.Henry, Maupassant, Chekhov)Henry's first collection, Cabbages and Kings appeared in 1904. The second, The Four Million, was published two years later and included his well-known stories "The Gift of the Magi" and "The Furnished Room". The Trimmed Lamp (1907) included "The Last Leaf". Henry's best known work is perhaps the much anthologized "The Ransom of Red Chief", included in the collection Whirligigs (1910). The Heart of the West (1907) presented tales of the Texas range. O. Henry published 10 collections and over 600 short stories during his lifetime.I chose The Four Million this term. There are many short fictions in this collection, and every of them are worth reading. However, TheGiftoftheMagi left a deep impression on me. I consider itas the most touching novel I have ever read. It is delicate and beautiful. It contains love and tenderness. In this article, O. Henry used his style of writing narrated a winding and simple story with humor and a little sadness. The story is about the young couple, who was short of money but had developed deep affection for each other, wanted to buy their lovers a surprising Christmas gift. Unbeknown to Jim, Della sold her most valuable possession, her beautiful hair, which was described as “a brown cascade”“had the queen of Shebalivedin the flat across the airshaft, Della would have let her hair hang out thewindow someday to dry just to depreciate Her Majesty's jewels and gifts”, in order to buy a platinum fob chain for Jim's watch; while unbeknown to Della, Jim sold his own most valuable possession, his watch, which was appreciated as “hadKing Solomon been the janitor, with all his treasures piled up in the basement,Jim would have pulled out his watch every time he passed, just to see him pluckat his beard from envy”, to buy a set of comb with pure tortoise shell andjewelled rimsfor Della's hair. The young couple sacrificedtheir greater treasures to a gift, but neither had practical need for the other’s gift any more. But in the last paragraph, the author wrote,“But in a lastword to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts thesetwo were the wisest. All who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest.Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi.”In this materialistic society, people often use money to measuregifts. They even forget the persons they love and the persons who love them.Nevertheless, whenever people give gifts for their monetary value or physical impressions, the gifts are immediately devalued. When bags of gifts which are packaged delicately in front of us,what can us see except empty and blank? Parents feel happy because of our simple greeting cards in their birthday, or a few words of blessing. These gifts are incredibly simple, but true.We need to care more about others,no matter how much money we have. What our loved one need is how our concerns about him or her. Not only in some important festivals but also in our daily life, don’t niggard to show your love.AlthoughJim and Della were as poor as a church mouse, aslong as they had love, they felt happier than any millionaire.。

ConclusionA Study on the Sublimation of Humanity inThe Gift of the MagiI. Introduction The Gift of the Magi is a short popular and highly regardedstoryby O. Henry which has moved people such a long period of time all over the world. The story will impress much more people in thefollowing years and centuries. The author, O. Henry 1862-1910 , left us 600 short stories which were published in 1917 in 14 volumes.Since O. Henry’s works were published. A great many scholars all over the world have conducted continuous research into those works and found their profound values. Critics have singled out O. Henryasone of the greatest American short story writers-describing him as a“writer’s writer” who also possesses universal appeal.O. Henry was brought up by an aunt in Greensboro, where, at theage of fifteen, he went to work in an uncle’s drugstore. He married in 1887 and his wife had a daughter in 1889. Because of the troubles that came one after the other, he left his wife and child. In 1897, after learning of his wife’s serious illness, Henry returned toAustin regardless of accusation of of robbery. At the same time, his wife passed away. After his release, he headed for New York City, where he worked as a journalist. The collection of colorfulcharacters in his writing was enhanced by O. Henry’s habit ofwandering the streets and parks, talking to people of all conditions. He wrote sixty-five short stories in 1904 alone, and fifty the next year including The Gift of the Magi. The old classic The Gift of the Magi concernsthe unselfishsacrifice of a young man and his wife, both of who sell their themost valuable and the only possession for Christmas gift. Thisinformation is revealed, of course, in the characteristic O.Henry’ssurprising ending. The surprising ending offers people anopportunityto contemplate. However, Della and Jim are not saddened by what they seem to have lost. In their selfless giving, they are likened to the most wise man. O. Henry primarily uses the story of the Magi tocompare the acts of the two characters in The Gift of the Magi. He does this through the use of symbols and by comparing the selfless giving of presents of Della and Jim to that of Magi. We know thattheauthor wants to reflect something through the whole story. The Gift of the Magi is an extraordinary novel. Form the socialpoint of view, it is a story about a very poor but blissful young couple named Jim and Della in the end of 18th century in England. Asa love story, one of the most moving things is that in spite of thedifficulties in their everyday life, their true love to each other and the enthusiasm for life do not change at all. This storyreflectsthe sympathy with the poor and the criticism on the unfair society. At the same time, it advocates the simplicity and true love.So it was worth to praise and sing the pure humanity. As to havea deeper understanding of the contribution that O. Henry has madeand his achievements, the author of this paper would like to discuss hiswriting techniques in The Gift of the Magi. The author holds thathisworks are mainly characterized on the sublimation of humanity. The next three parts of the paper will discuss the characters, theembodiment and the causes of sublimation of humanity, and then makeaconclusion by summing up his main achievements in his respect and theconventional virtue which we need to promote.II. Depiction of Characters in The Gift of the MagiA. Considerate and Meek HeroineAt the beginning of the novel, the author has deliberatelyexaggerated Della’s poor life condition. Those are all themoney―one dollar and eight-seven cents.“And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher. Three times Della counted it.”1 There are one dollar and eight-seven cents. And the next day would be the Christmas. The author emphasizes that Della counts money pitifully and hardly, especially through “several” repeated action to let us feel the difficulty of Della’s life.hearted This description indicates Della’s shy and kind-personality. At the same time, it also allows us to deeply understandthe poor’s life in that money society. Her home-a furnished flat is 8 dollars per week. In the vestibule below is a letter-box into whichno letter would go, and an electric button from which no mortal finger could coax a ring. Della is with 20 dollars income to maintaintheir lives per week. Therefore, we could understand one dollar andeight-seven cents are so difficult to her. Facing such a distress of life, Della has no choice but to cry down on the shabby little couch.Della finishes her cry and stands by the window, and she thinkstomorrow would be Christmas Day. But she just has one dollar andeight-seven cents with which to buy Jim a present. In face of hard situation, Della is so weak and helpless. Itgives us simplicity impression of Della. She wants to buy a rare and valuable thing for her husband as Christmas gift. But there are only one dollar and eight-seven cents to buy a present for Jim. There isapier-glass between the windows of the room. “Suddenly she whirledfrom the window from the window and stood before the glass. Her face had lost its color within twenty seconds”.2 There are twopossessions of the Mr. James Dillingham Young and Mrs. JamesDillingham Young in which they both take a mighty pride. One isJim’s gold watch that has been his father’s and his grandfather’s.The other is Della’s hair. Has the queen of Sheba3 the women whorules the ancient kingdom of Sheba and is referred to in Habeshanhistory, the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, and the Qur’an. livedin the flat across the airshaft, Della would have let her hair hang out the window some day to dry just to depreciate HerMajesty’sjewels and gifts4. Della’s beautiful hair falls about her ripplingand shining like a cascade of brown waters. It reaches below herkneeand makes itself almost a garment for her. It seemed that the hair was so beautiful and cherished.Della decides to sell her beautiful hair eventually, and thisdecision is painful and heavy. However, she feels pleased, because she loves her husband, so she would prefer to suffer losses. That is Della’s true love and considerate heart. Della receives twentydollars from the Madame for her hair. After that, she ransacks the stores for Jim’s present. Because of the love, she researches thegift from one shop to another. Finally, she finds the suitable chain.Della is a considerate and meek woman. At this moment, there is only one person in her mind―that is her husband. In order to buy thesimple and chaste chain, she spends twenty-one dollars.B. Thoughtful and Kind HeroThe author seems to describe the role of hero-Jim much lessthan the heroine. For instance, he seems to pay less attention toselling and buying gift for his wife. However, his characteristiccould be given in an indirect way. For example, Jim is never late, which indicates that Jim is always punctual. As is described that“He looked thin and very serious. Poor life was following, he was only twenty-two and to be burdened with a family. He needed a newovercoat and had no gloves.”5, they live a hard life and struggle for living in a better condition, but they possess not enough moneyand could not seek any way to change their current situation.Although in such a difficult life environment, Jim sells his most previous chain. He cannot live through the Christmas if he does not prepare a present for his wife. He draws a package from his overcoat pocket and throws a gift on the table. That is The Combs-the set of combs, side and back, that Della has worshiped long in a Broadway window. They are expensive and beautiful combs. The combs seem to suit Della only. This is not only the true love but also reflects Jim’s personality. Jim is a thoughtful and kind husband. He and his wife both are sincere and honest people.III. The Sublimation of Humanity in The Gift of the MagiA. Self-sacrificeO. Henry creates a special ending of the article. It means thatat the end of the whole passage the mental status or the fate of the character has changed greatly. From the special ending, the humanity is clearly presented. Among O. Henry’s short stories, the eternal theme proves to be the humanity. The great success of the storycould not be separatedfrom the humanity of characters. First of all, oneof the most beautiful human virtues is the co uple’s self-sacrifice.There exist good and evil elements in human nature, for the twoare usually mixed with each other more or less. While the goodelements constitute the predominant portion, man will carry forward his virtues such as kindness, self-sacrifice, selfless dedication, simplicity and so on. Della has the most prized thing―that is her hair. And her husband just owns the most valuable thing―gold watch that has been his father’s and his grandfather’s. These two things are so priceless and meaningful for themselves. Although they face the poor life, they still want to express their love through auniquegift. But they have no enough money, so they have no other choice.Their mind just has one solution, and then they sell their own most valuable thing to buy the gift for each other. In this condition, both of them do not consider themselves. They only want the other person whom they love to feel happy.Della’s hair is so beautiful, and she cries when she cuts itoff. Of course, she loves the hair, because that is her most proud hair. Not only does she love the hair, her husband loves her longandliving hair too. Thus, her heart is filled with sadness. But for a valuable gift for her husband, she finishes her cry and selects gift happily for Jim. Finally, she finds the suitable chain. Sheconsiders this is the fittest thing for Jim. Therefore, she cuts off the hairand adds another one dollar to buy the unique chain withouthesitation. At the same moment, Jim also plans to prepare aparticular gift for his wife. Because of the lack of money, Jimsellshis most valuable gold watch. Eventually, Jim gives Della the set of combs, which are Della’s favorite.B. Selfless DedicationO. Henry’s stories usually win the artistic effect within theplot and pay much more attention to the character’s artistic power. But he adopts the perspective way to appreciate the human beauty. In New York, in America, families like Della and Jim’s couldhardly keep their economy balanced. So it is impossible for them to buy a good gift for the other people. The only one thing, whichcouldcomfort the Della and Jim is their sincere and warm love for each other.Another one of the most beautiful human virtues is the couple’sselfless dedication spirit. In the story of The Gift of the Magi, there are many mental and physical actions to express their selfless dedication. Della is a little worried after cutting off the hair.Because her husband loves her hair too, and she fears that she isnotas beautiful as before. Although she knows that, she could not help thinking anymore instead of buying a valuable gift for her husband. When Della returnshome, an anxiety comes on her. She finds herselflike a truant schoolboy. She tells herself “Does Jim like me?”6 full of worry. She has prepared for supper and waits for her husband. When shedoubles the fob chain in her hand, Della keeps saying a littleprayer, “Please God, make him think I am still pretty”. From those descriptions it can be known that Della loves Jim so deeply that she cares about every detail. Della presents her love under such harsh conditions to express her inner pure emotion. After Jim going back home, he finds that his wife’s appearancehas changed and he is confused by De lla’s hair. He has sold hisgoldwatch to buy the comb for Della’s beautiful hair. But Della’s hair has cut off. We know, Jim can not think Della that she is not as beautiful as before. In his heart, she is the most beautiful woman. He feels a little surprised because he sells his precious gold watch to buy the comb. However, his wife has no long hair, so he isconfused. Both Jim and Della have the same thought in their mind. They just hope the other person whom they love happy. Now, there is no watch to match the platinum fob chain, and also no brown hair to suit the set of combs. It can be said that DellaandJim buy the chain and the comb respectively at the expense of their valuable possessions. These presents are quite precious for both, though the gifts are useless temporarily. It is their selfless dedication that makes the gifts unique, which are symbols of their sincere and warm love.C. SimplicityLove is an eternal theme of the whole world, and plays asignificant role in people’s li fe. At most of time, it functions like a magic power which renders people a sense of security. The story of The Gift of the Magi exerts a great impact on people’s lifeand growth.Between Della and Jim, simplicity is one of the most humanvirtues among their true love and simple life. They lose their own most precious things to buy the Christmas gift for the other. They never imagine that their gifts are useless. There is no doubt that they receive the most valuable gift―simple and true love.“Then she heard his step on the stair away down on the flight.”It describes Della’s mood when she waits for her husband. She can hear Jim’s step, which reflects their deep love and Della’s excitedand worried mood. They can make such a sacrifice also because of their simple love. Their choices are meaningful and a kind ofsublimation. Hegel says“There is a high quality in the love, becauseit reacts a graceful spirit.”9That is a kind of power and spirit. That is an embodiment of human virtues. Although love is exposed in poverty, thislove is still true andprecious without money. Still in the unfair society and world, Della and Jim present a distinctive love story. They are lovely people in the world. In the beginning, O. Henry uses the story of the Magi to compare the acts of the two characters in The Gift of the Magi. He does this by using the symbols and comparing the selfless giving of presents of Della and Jim. He speaks highly of the couple’ssimplicity. In the end, their gifts are useless on the surface. But they are the wisest persons. They use their simple actions to expressindividual thought, languages and behaviors. They use theirsimplicity to prove the real value in that money society. They tell human what the most priceless thing is in the world.IV. The Causes of Humanity SublimationA. Economic CauseThe Gift of the Magi reflects the inevitable result and the real love in that complicated capitalist society. O. Henry displays the theme with simple language. O. Henry is under the influence of Europeand naturalistic realism, and he has a strong feeling to UnitedStates’ social changes.O. Henry in the late nineteenth, it was the U.S. transitionperiod from free capitalism phase to the monopoly capitalism phase period. At the time of the united states in the capital socialist rapid development stage, the capital appeared pauperization.Meanwhile, bankruptcy of medium and small bourgeois and the expansionof unemployment made American society full of contradictions. With the contradictions, people made up of a kind ofrelationship. The relationship between the people became the naked money relations. Most of people’s heart was also corroded becauseofmoney society. With a clear understanding of the society, O. Henry expressed severe satire in his works. In America, especially in the large cities, the loss of human nature was too fast. O. Henry used his own way to express the human nature in such an evil society. The Gift of the Magi was not only the embodiment of humanity sublimation but also showed out a strong human nature.B. Political Cause“With the deep contradictions, the masses of the people weredoubt and despair to American democratic society.”8 Once they tried to wipe out the slave through the war, they thought after wiping out the slave America would change. They considered that America wouldbethe most advanced democratic country. But as a matter of fact,America did not become a country which everyone expected withdemocracy, freedom and fortunate. On the contrary, America was oneof the deepest countries whichexisted in the gap between the rich and the poor. During that periodof time, on the one hand, there was a small part of billionaires who indulged the luxury life. On the other hand, there was a large part of people who lived in a very hard life condition. Most of themlivedon the verge of starvation. In such a social situation, social life experienced a great change. In that century, people faced thecapitalist system which was decayed, deceptive and hideous. It seemedthat the society was full of all kinds of ugly phenomena. It was asadark society and a dim period of time. We could witness different classes and all kinds of people. That included billionaires, policemen, thieves, cheaters and so on.Thus, human virtues were not so common. So many people justthought of themselves. During that long period of time, capitalism was very obvious. With the social phenomena, citizens destroyed and twisted human nature. However, the story in The Gift of the Magi madean embodiment of the humanity sublimation. It told human a truth no matter how hard and dark the society is, the human nature stillexists.C. Individual CauseThe theme of the story is about the human nature. The writerchooses the subject intentionally according to his different experiences and livingconditions. As the author, O. Henry has aspecial experience and he gives an endless thinking and complicated feelings to the society and humans. In general, O. Henry writes to the reflection of the life. Hisshort stories are full of human consciousness. The humanconsciousness is not only his feeling to the life, but also theresult of the influence of American social background and culture. O.Henry lives a tough lifestyle throughout his life. Therefore, hefeels the pain and misfortune of the bottom layer deeply. Herecognizes the social evil through many social phenomena. There isnodoubt that the hard life experiences bring him a lot of pain.O. Henry’s short novels are as the epitome of his whole lifecourse. O. Henry exclaims in The Gift of the Magi that “life ismadeof sobs, sniffles and smiles.”9 And sniffles occupy a majority ofthe life. O. Henry’s worse life leads him to experience all themajor life scenes. There are various scenes which include unusualadventure, city life, high society and more bottom life. A special experience brings him pain, but also teaches him to recognize andadapt to the hard society.O. Henry reflects the unusual social meaning through usualthings. In this way, it can reveal the most profound truth of the life. In The Gift of the Magi, he also uses a simple and usual story to reflect anunusual meaning. He tells a story about Della and Jimto express the human nature. He plans to reflect humanity and make anembodiment of humanity sublimation successfully.V. ConclusionThis paper has discussed the simple but true love in the story of The Gift of the Magi. Love in the novel is a crucial part asaffection between male and female is highlighted. In the aspect of developing the plot, love as a clue, a main line runs through the whole story. Through the paper, we plan to make a study on thesublimation of humanity in The Gift of the Magi. In the story, although Della and Jim live in a very poor and difficult life, they seem to have a usual lifestyle and their story is full of truehumanity. Those are human’s genuine, kind and beautiful spirit. The precious spirit is humanity sublimation in the hard situation. In that society which is corrupted by money and authority, money is everything. In the money society, the author tries to help usunderstand whether exists something else more important than money. The story of The Gift of the Magi gives everyone an obviousanswer concerning what is the most valuable thing in the world. In people’s eyes, the gift can be bought with money, but the true loveis priceless. The true love includes self-sacrifice, selflessdedication and simplicity from one person to another one. In the story, Della andJim are wisest persons and they are the magi eachother because their unique virtue. The Gift of the Magi is arealization about true love and humanity sublimation. O. Henry’swritings are still lively and entertaining as ever. The story of The Gift of the Magi is the signature of his writings. Human can notchoose the life environment, but we can choose our spirit support. The paper lets us know the most priceless gift is our human’sspirit.O. Henry exposes the injustice, unreasonable things, abnormalphenomena and lower people’s miserable destiny through his creation. For one thing, O. Henry is pitiful with the lower people. Foranother, he appreciates the beauty of the human nature highly. The article is designed as a comedy atmosphere in the tragedy life of lower people. This paper praises mightiness personality and noble characters in ordinary people. 麦琪的礼物英文读后感【精选】【精品】

麦琪的礼物英文读后感【精选】【精品】篇一:麦琪的礼物英文读后感The Gift of the Magi is a short story wrote by O.Henry.This story tells that in the day before Christmas,a poor young couple exchanged gifts by sold the most precious thing of each, but resulted ordetracted, the two precious gifts all became useless things. While they got the most precious thing than any material objects——love. After read this story,I learned how to respect others’ love and how to love others. In this story, they all lost the most valuable things——Jim’s golden watch and Della’s beautiful hair. Behind this, I saw they loved each other infinitely. They loved their family, they let me feel that cold Christmas Eve has be e the warm heaven just because of their gifts. If Della only took one dollar and eighty-seven cents to pick gift, this story will probably lacking of shocking, and also cannot cause readers’ thinking. In this materialistic society, people often use money to measure gifts. When bags of gifts which are packaging delicately in front of us,what can we see except empty and blank? Parents feel happy because of our simple greeting cards in their birthday, because of a few words of blessing. These gifts, simple but true.It can’t be pared with tho se which built with a lot of money, outlined by luxuriance. What clever gifts! In some sense, they are invaluable.Yes,in this materialistic society, some people think money is everything, the one who owns money, who owns all.No wonder a great amount of girls became mammonists, and want to marry richers;no wonder more and more men think that there is no true love, what girls love is their money. But I always believe sincerelove is existed and it’s priceless. Even if you have millions of money, you can’t change it into true love. Maybe money can let you get some feelings from girls, but those are hypocritical. When you no longer possess vast wealth, the hypocritical feelings will ended and left you extremely painful finally.Jim and Della were a happy couple, although they were poor, living in short of money. In their hearts, money is not important, the important thing is the affection from each other. As long as they have it, they felt happier than any millionaire.Maybe some people will pour scorn on it and cannot understand what their done. If there is a good fortune and a sincere feeling in front of you at the same time, which one will you choose? I wouldn't hesitate to choose the later, because sincere feeling is priceless! I believe that true pay will have sincere return finally, and the one who have true love can have his or her happiness.Nowadays, more and more people have been pressed to lose their breath by the reality. They f ot the persons they love, and the persons who love them.We need to care about others,no matter how much money we have. What our loved one need is how our concern about him or her. In some important days, don’t f et to bring him or her somegifts. No matter what is it,how valuable is it,he or she would like it anyway.Because it is the gift of the Magi.篇二:麦琪的礼物英文读后感“Love is the best gift.”O.Henry told us,in one of his most famous novels,The Gift of The Magi.O.Henry is said to be the most gifted and famous American short-story novelist in the world. As one of his major works,TheGift of The Magi tells us a story about a couple in the low social class. With the ing of Christmas, both of them want to give the other a gift.As a result, the young wife,Della, sells her beautiful long hair to buy a platinum fob chain to descorate the watch of her husband,Jim.While at the same time,Jim sacrifice his most valuable golden watch to buy his wife a jewelled b.To be honest,we have to say that it is an unfortunate accident. Both of them ( their most treasured things for the other. But when things turn out,it seems that what they have done is meaningless. However,in the other way, although they don’t receive the gift they need, they receive the love from the other. And no matter what will happen in the future, they will remember that the most valuable is neither the long beautiful hair nor the golden watch, but the people who live with us.”Love is the best gift.”That is what the writer wants to tell us.篇三:麦琪的礼物英文读后感"Gift of the Magi" is the O. 综述之《麦琪的礼物》中的爱情观中文摘要:作为欧·亨利爱情小说系列的代表作.

Abstract: In spite of an old-fashioned talkiness, the story succeeds because it tempers sentimentality with humor and real insight. The trick ending, typical of O. Henry, is here not so much a contrivance of plot as it is a genuine irony found oftenin the deepest human relationships. Jim's selling of his watch and Della's selling of her hair are not merely examples of manufactured storytelling, but rather of a recognition of love's readiness for ultimate self-sacrifice, which is its own reward. In depriving themselves, Della and Jim enrich each other. They are, as O. Henry concludes, the true magi, the wisest of thewise.

Analysis of O.Henry’s Writing Style on The Gift of the Magi1.IntroductionO. Henry, named William Sydney Porter, is a distinguished American story writer, one of the three most famous short-story writers in the world, enjoys equal status with Chekhov and Maupassant. He creates an original, typically American democratic form of short stories with a valuable critical awareness of life and society, through which expressed his humur. Therefore, some critics call him “the founder of American stories”.This story occurs in the early years of the 20th century. At that period of time in America, bourgeoisie bribed the government and corrupted the functioned department in government. The gap between the rich and the poor was deeper. The number of lower class poor people rocketed. The whole society was under a profound change. The development of consumption culture and subsequent problems of morality consisted of many contradictions in people’s social behaviors. Such characters as sacrifice, diligence and model are stressed in the end of 19th century, while personalities like purchase, vanity and personal success were stressed in the beginning of 20th century. Many of O. Henry’s stories take place in New York, the capital where the contradiction sharply exists. O. Henry has an obvious affection for the city. His stories deal for the most part with ordinary people: clerks, policemen, and waitresses. In The Gift of the Magi, b oth Jim and Della’s gifts are completely beyond their purchasing po wer. That would reflect people’s attitude toward economy. Because of the tide of materialism, people pay much attention on consumption, even take it as an “adventure”. The commodity-status relationship dominates people’s mind. Though Della and Jim’s buying gifts are greatly influenced by the consumption culture shift, the ending shows out the true love through their tough course of purchasing. The plots in O. Henry’s works appear to be nothing special at first glance. Nevertheless, read those to the ending and you will find something unusual out of what seems to be too ordinary. I would like to say, his works are full of depth in portraying an unfathomable humanity of character. His works are the best revealment of humanity as well as the reflection of society from the twist ending. Furthermore, the using of descriptive indication, conversational narration and biblical references make the short story more impressive.2. Descriptive indicationHenry uses descriptive indiction to hint at what the twist ending to his story will be. "Now, there were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim's gold watch . . . The other was Della's hair" (Henry 2). This emphasis conveys to the reader the importance of these two assets, and ensures that they will be a focal point in the story later on. After selling her hair out of desperation, Della goes to buy Jim a chain for his watch. "As soon as she saw it she knew that it must be Jim's . . . Grand as the watch was, he sometimes looked at it on the sly on account of the old leather strap that he used in place of a chain" (Henry 3). Although the watch is a family heirloom, the fact that Jim is not entirely proud of it because of the strap puts into question how much he values the watch. Lastly, Henry concludes the foreshadowing with Jim's reaction to Della's hair. "Jim stopped inside the door, as immovable as a setter at the scent of quail . . . He simply stared at her fixedly with that peculiar expression on his face" (Henry 4, 5). Because these elements to the story are introduced with impeccable timing, O. Henry's indication leads to a fantastic ending.3.The introduction and reflection of twist ending3.1The introduction of twist endingThe most remarkable characteristic of O. Henry’s short stories is twist ending. It means that at the end of an article the mental status or the fate of the main character has changed greatly, but this change is based on certain reasons have mentioned in the previous article. He often stresses on something important but not the most important in his works. The most important part always seems to write incidentally, which even the most circumspective reader may ignore it.However, the whole passage is suddenly endowed with a great charm because of the sudden change and caused a profound consideration of the situation or problem the article has revealed. When the stories end in a totally unexpected but reasonable way, we can do nothing but cheer for O. H enry’s literary talent.3.2The deep reflection of twist ending3.2.1The pure love between main charactersJim and his wife Della are young couple who are very much in love with each other, but can barely afford their one-room apartment due to their very bad economic situation. So they live in a very bad condition, they are so poor that they can not afford to their Christmas gifts. But for Christmas, Della decides to buy Jim a fob for his prized pocket watch giv en to him by his father’s father. To raise the funds, she has her long, beautiful hair cut off and sold to make a wig. Meanwhile, Jim decides to sell his watch to buy Della a beautiful set of combs made out of tortoiseshell and jewels for her lovely, knee-length brown hair. Though they are only the small potatoes who live in the lower classes, they never lost their fervency to their lives and love each other deeply. Finally, they find that these presents are no longer useful, but they have been the most priceless one in the world, like a sincere love to each other. They love each other so deeply, that’s enough. They have already owned the whole world.3.2.2The human defects of the societyMost of O. Henry’s stories are set in contemporary present, the early years of the 20th century. At that period of time in America, the bourgeoisie was getting the upper hand and the capitalist economy was booming to its top. Bourgeoisie bribed the government and corrupted the functioned department in government. The gap between the rich and the poor was deeper. The number of lower class poor people rocketed. The whole society was undergoing a profound change. The characters of the story are mainly the lower class who struggles to make a living in sadness, impoverished, crucial and unjust society. Whether good or bad, provide for its people, some people corrupted, some still stood at the very first place, keeping pure hearted and self-sacrificed. In The Gift of the Magi, we readers are not only touched by the supreme of valuable love, but at the same time we get clues of how darkness the society is, the rich people in the society are cold-hearted; they show no mercy andsympathy to the poor.3.2.3The purpose of moral teaching through the contrastOn the one hand, the poor couple Jim and Della sell the only valuable things they own only to give each other special Christmas gifts. To a certain extent, these gifts are useless. Della cannot wear her combs without her hair, and Jim cannot use his watch chain without his watch. However, Della and Jim give each other the best of all possible gifts, it is love. On the other hand, we can also realize the darkness of the society. The poor live in a quite bad situation. The rich benefit themselves at the expense of others. In order to make money they never show mercy and sympathy to the poor. The poor get poorer and poorer; the rich get richer and richer. Through this obvious contrast, O. Henry wants to reveal the theme of both virtues and defects in order to awake people’s conscience and their deep est desire for all good things, so that people can make their efforts to save the whole world.4. conversational version of narrationO. Henry's conversational version of narration provides insight to the characters, and helps to convey the message of the story. "There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it. Which instigates the moral reflection that life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating" (Henry 1). This reflection on Della not only details her feelings, but it also sets up the reader for more of Henry's graceful narration style. "When Della reached home her intoxication gave way a little to prudence and reason . . . Which is always a tremendous task, dear friends--a mammoth task" (Henry 4). Again, Della's thoughts are depicted, and it is as if Henry is speaking to a large audience of comrades by referring to the readers as friends. "Poor fellow, he was only twenty-two--and to be burdened with a family! He needed a new overcoat and he was without gloves" (Henry 4). Here, Jim is described with yet more commentary that is usually not seen in narration. O. Henry's panache adds a special touch to the story with a personal look inside of the characters' minds, and the reader is exposed to a distinctive approach to writing that sets an appropriately genial narrative.5. Biblical references adding to the moral lessonBiblical references are employed with the intent of adding to the moral lesson, and emphasizing what Christmas is really about. "Had the queen of Sheba lived in the flat across the airshaft, Della would have let her hair hang out the window some day to dry just to depreciate Her Majesty's jewels and gifts" (Henry 2). Della's hair is glorified here, while Jim's watch is in the following sentence. "Had King Solomon been the janitor, with all his treasures piled up in the basement, Jim would have pulled out his watch every time he passed, just to see him pluck at his beard from envy" (Henry 2). These two quotes suggest to the reader that we should value what we have, and value each other for our own positive features. In the concluding paragraph, O. Henry makes the real meaning of his story ring true. "The magi, as you know, were wise men--wonderfully wise men--who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger . . . O all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi" (Henry 7). This mention of the Biblical magi reminds the reader why people celebrate Christmas, and presents the lesson of love being the most important gift of all. Such references serve to explain Henry's motivations for writing the story, and how significant the message of the tale truly is.6.Conclusion"The Gift of the Magi" is one of the many stories where O. Henry uses twist ending descriptive indication, conversational narration and biblical references, but this is possibly the most meaningful one. In a world where gift-giving has become so commercialized, people should always remember the real reason they are giving to one another. The moral lesson is that Jim and Della's selfless love for each other is more valuable than any of their possessions. With Henry's use of a conversational version of narration, descriptive indication, and biblical references, the story succeeds in getting across his message in a marvelous way.Works CitedHenry.O, Selected Stories.
