[精美语篇]How to survive in an earthquakeOn April 20, 2013 an earthquake with the magnitude of 7.0 hit Lushan County of Ya'an City, Sichuan Province. The earthquake has caused significant damage. So how to take safety measures during an earthquake has become an important issue. Here are some guidelines to staying safe in earthquakes.Firstly, don't be nervous and keep calm. Try to get into an open area away from trees, buildings, walls, signs, power lines and anything else that might fall on you if outdoors. Secondly, if you are indoors, stay there. Quickly move to a safe location in the room such as under a strong desk, a strong table, or along an interior wall. Cover your head and neck with your arms. The goal is to protect yourself from falling objects and be located near the structural strong points of the room. Avoid taking covernear windows, large mirrors and hanging objects. Thirdly, never go to the stairs and never take the lift to go downstairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged. Even if the stairs are not collapsed by the earthquake, they may collapse later when overloaded by fleeing people. Though we can't stop earthquakes, we can reduce the damage that earthquakes bring us if we take right measures. 12.shock (vt. &vi.) Keep working? Get more exercise? Or learn something new? You may put them on hold. There’s a chance that, sooner or later, you might have to move further than you were thinking, as far as Mars (火星).On Thursday, National Geographic will show the first ever Mars show home, giving earthlings an idea of whattheir life could look like on the Red Planet. Set in the notsodistant year of 2037, the iglooshaped structure could be the home of your future. It shows a house built using recycled spacecraft parts and Martian soil, called regolith, which has been microwaved into bricks. Some parts of the home are recognisable—kitchen, bedroom—but there are fundamental differences that are vital for human survival. As the Martian atmosphere is around one hundredth as thick as the Earth’s, people will need permanent shelter from the sun and society will move largely indoors. Most buildings will be connected by underground passages and the houses won’t have windows. The homes will have simulatedsolar lighting, or natural light that has been bent several times.Walls will need to be 10 to 12 feet thick, to protect people from dangerous rays that can pass through six feet of steel, and a double airlocked entrance to keep the home under proper pressure.“We don’t think of our houses as things that keep us alive, but on Mars your house will be a survival centre,”says Stephen Petranek, author of How We’ll Live on Mars. This is not just the stuff of scifi. “Ten to twenty years from now there will certainly be people on Mars,”Petranek says.“We’ve had the technology for 30 years to land people on Mars, but we haven’t had the will,” Petranek says. “”’ participation has forced government agencies to up their game, and influential films such as Gravity and The Martian have caught society’s eye.【解题导语】本文主要对人类未来在火星上居住作了相关介绍.1.What can we know about the show home from the text?A.It has no windows or doors due to security concern.B.Its design presents the idea of environmental protection.C.It has thick walls keeping the home under proper pressure.D.Its underground passages connect all the buildings together.B B.2.What do the underlined words “put them on hold” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A.Put them off. Unit 4 EarthquakesⅠ. APeople love cellphones, which is why nine in ten Americans own one.But does heavy use of cellphones pose a risk of cancer? This question has caused controversy for many years.A new study in rats now augments those concerns. Its d ata linked longterm, intense exposure to radiation from cellphones with an increased risk of cancer in the heart or brain. The results have yet to be confirmed, the authors note.Indeed, although the rat study found a link between cellphone radiation and cancer,it offers no clues to why such a link might exist, notes Jonathan Samet. He teaches preventative medicine and directs the Institute for Global Health at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.Still,he calls the new study's findings “significant”.They could lead to studies researching how cellphone radiation might cause cancer,he says.Phone signals are relayed between cell towers and cellphones via radio waves. This radio frequency—or RF—radiation is a type known as nonionizing(非电离的).Unlike Xrays, nonionizing radiation does not deposit enough energy into cells to release electrons from atoms or molecules, producing ions. So it tends to be far less harmful than ionizing radiation, such as Xrays. But that does not mean radio waves might not cause harm.In very large doses(量) this radiation will heat the body and cause tissue damage. But it's not yet known what much lower RF levels might do,such as those from cellphone use.Five years ago,the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer,or IARC,concluded that cellpho ne use “is possibly carcinogenic (致癌的)”.Its conclusion was based on what little research data was available at that time. But notice that IARC was not certain. It said only that phone use might “possibly” caus e cancer. So scientists at the National Toxicology Program,or NTP,investigated further.[语篇解读] 本文是一篇说明文。

The deadliest quake of all time might be one of the least talked about, considering it occurred nearly 450 years ago. The 1556 quake claimed the lives of some 830,000 people. Why the massive death toll? Blame the quake's strength (8.0 on the Richter scale, or more than 30 times more powerful than the recent quake in Haiti) as well as timing and location. The pre-modern structures were utterly unableto withstand a quake of such force, and massivelandslides contributed to the casualties.

China has the misfortune to have had the second deadliest earthquake on record, the 1976 Great Tangshan Earthquake, which struck in the country's northeast. It'd be more accurate to call this a binaryquake: an aftershock that struck 16 hours afterthe initial temblor measured an identical 7.8 onthe Richter scale and was equally destructive.

The pre-modernstructures were utterly unable to withstand a quake ofsuch force, and massive landslides contributed to thecasualties.

China has the misfortune to have had the second deadliest earthquake on record, the 1976 Great Tangshan Earthquake, which struck in the country's northeast. It'dbe more accurate to call this a binaryquake: anaftershock that struck 16 hours after theinitial temblor measured an identical 7.8 on theRichter scale and was equally destructive.
