Videocommunicationsystemsfordeafpeoplearelimitedintermsofqualityandperformance.Analysisofvisualat-tentionmechanismsforsignlanguagemayenableoptimiza-tionofvideocodingsystemsfordeafusers.Eye-movementtrackingexperimentswereconductedwithprofoundlydeafvolunteerswhilewatchingsignlanguagevideoclips.Deafpeoplearefoundtofixatemostlyonthefacialregionofthesignertopickupsmalldetailedmovementsassociatedwithfacialexpressionandmouthshapes.Lowerresolution,peripheralvisionisusedtoprocessinformationfromlarger,rapidmovementsofthesignerinthevideoclips.Acodingschemethatgivesprioritytothefaceofthesignermaybeappliedtoimproveperceptionofvideoqualityforsignlan-guagecommunication.

Visualperceptionistheprocessofacquiringknowl-edgeaboutenvironmentalobjectsandeventsbyex-tractinginformationfromthelighttheyemitorreflect(Palmer,2002).Howwe‘‘see’’remainsanactivere-searchchallengeforvisionscientistsandspecialists.Understandingthedetection,recognition,andinterpre-tationofvisualinformationcouldhaveatremendousimpactonhowwepresentandusevisualinformationandonthedesignofinformationsystems.Thechal-lengeistounderstandhowvisualinformationcanbe

presentedsothatitsusecanbeoptimizedfortheobserver.Ofallthesenses,visionisreliedonmostheavilyforsensoryinputabouttheenvironment(Hendee&Wells,1997).Thisisparticularlytruefordeafpeoplewhorelyonvisualcommunicationofinformationusingsignlanguageand/orlipreading.Theaimofthisresearchistoinvestigatehowdeafpeopleseesignlanguage.Therationaleforthisisthatanunderstand-ingofhowdeafpeopleobservesignlanguagecouldenablevideocommunicationsystems,forexample,videoconferencing,tobeoptimized.Inthisstudy,weexaminetheinfluenceofsignlanguagevideocontentontheattentionmechanismsofdeafviewersandtheimplicationsfordesignofvideocommunicationssystemsfordeafpeople.Wereviewthequalityrequirementsforsignlanguagevideocommunicationandwhatisknownaboutsceneperceptionandtheeyegazeofdeafpeopleobservingsignlanguage.Anexperimentispresented,usingeyetracking,toinvestigatehowdeafpeopleperceivesignlanguagevideoandthisisdiscussedinthecontextofimprovingsignlanguagevideocommunicationquality.
