《巧克力战争》

《巧克力战争》罗伯特?科米尔(Robert Cormier,1925~2000),美国作家、专栏作者、记者,出生于美国马萨诸塞州。
其作品以深沉、悲观的风格闻名,代表作有《我是乳酪》(I Am the Cheese)、《将军与儿子》(After the First Death)、《巧克力战争》(The Chocolate War)等,这些作品全都获得过业内的奖项,包括玛格丽特?A?
The Goober1)was waiting for him at the school's entrance, standing tense and troubled among the other fellows waiting for school to start, like prisoners resigned to2)execution3),taking their final drags4)from cigarettes before the bells began to ring. The Goober motioned Jerry aside. Jerry followed him guiltily. Herealized that Goober wasn't the cheerful,happy-go-lucky5)kid he'd known when school first started. What had happened? He'd been so wrapped up in his own concerns that he hadn't bothered about Goob."Jeez,Jerry, what did you do it for?" Goober asked, drawing him away from the others."Do what?"But he knew what Goober meant."The chocolates.""I don't know,Goob." Jerry said. It was no use faking out6)Goober the way he had faked out that kid on the bus. "That'sthe truth―I don't know.""You're asking for trouble,Jerry. Brother Leon7)spells trouble.""Look,Goob," Jerry said, wanting to reassure his friend, wanting to wipe that look of concern from his face. "It's not the end of the world. Four hundred kids in this school are going to sell chocolates. What does it matter if I don't?""It's not that simple,Jerry. Brother Leon won't let you get away with it."The warning bell sounded. Cigarettes were flipped into the gutter or mashed into the sandfilled receptacle8)near thedoor. Last drags were inhaled lingeringly. Guys who'd been sitting in cars listening to rock on the radio switched them off and slammed the doors behind them."Nice going, kid," somebody said, hurrying by,the pat on the ass Trinity's traditional gesture of friendship. Jerry didn't see who it was."Keep it up,Jerry." This, a corner-of?Cthe-mouth whisper from Adamo who hated Leon with a vengeance9)."See how the word is spreading?" Goober hissed. "What's more important―football and your marks or thelousy10)chocolate sale?"The bell rang again. It meant two minutes left to get to your locker and then to your homeroom11). A senior by the name of Benson approached them. Seniors were trouble for freshmen. It was better to be ignored by them than to be noticed. But Benson was clearly headed in their direction. He was a nut, known for his lack of inhibitions12),his complete disregard of the rules. As he neared Jerry and Goober,he began a Jimmy Cagney13)imitation,shooting his cuffs14)and hunching15)his shoulders. "Hey,there, guy. I wouldn't ... I wouldn't be in your shoes ... I wouldn't be in your shoes for a thou, boy,a mill ..." He punched Jerry playfully onthe arm."You couldn't fit those shoes anyway,Benson," somebody yelled. And Benson danced away,Sammy Davis16)now,wide grin, feet tapping, body whirling.Walking up the stairs,Goober said,"Do me a favor,Jerry. Take the chocolate today.""I can't,Goob.""Why not?""I just can't. I'm committed now.""The goddam Vigils," Goober said.Jerry had never heard Goober swear17)before. He'd always been a mild kind of kid, rolling with the punches18),loose and carefree, running around the track while the other kids sat uptight19)during practice sessions."It's not The Vigils,Goob. They're not in it anymore. It's me."They stopped at Jerry's locker."All right," Goober said, resigned, knowing it was useless to pursue the subject any further at the moment. Jerry felt sad suddenly because Goober looked so troubled, like an old man heaped with all the sorrows of the world, his thin face drawn and haggard20),his eyes haunted,as if he hadawakened from a nightmare he couldn't forget.Jerry opened his locker. He had thumbtacked a poster tothe back wall of the locker on the first day of school. The poster showed a wide expanse of beach,a sweep of sky with a lone star glittering far away. A man walked on the beach,a small solitary figure in all that immensity. At the bottom of the poster, these words appeared―Do I dare disturb the universe?By Eliot, who wrote the Waste Land thing they were studying in English. Jerry wasn't sure of the poster's meaning. But it had moved him mysteriously. It was traditional at Trinity for everyone to decorate the interior of his locker with a poster. Jerry chose this one.He had no time now to ponder the poster any longer. The final bell rang and he had thirty seconds to get to class.落花生正在校门口等他,既紧张又忧虑地站在其他等待开始上课的同学中间。
Truth is nicer than fiction

Truth is nicer than fiction现实要比电影好一点A horrible film is generating a lame debate一部恐怖电影引发的一场蹩脚争论HORRIBLE bosses come in many flavours.恶老板们总是各有各的恶。
There are psychopaths, bullies and prats.他们可能是神经病,是恶霸,是2B。
Incompetent bosses are irksome,too.但不称职的老板也一样的招人烦。
The bosses at New Line Cinema are not incompetent, in that their films make money, but they are still villains.新线电影公司的老板不能说是不称职,因为该公司的电影能大卖,但是他们仍然算得上恶棍。
For “Horrible Bosses”, their latest offering, is a crime against art and common sense.因为他们最新出品的电影《恶老板》简直就是对艺术的亵渎和常识的颠覆。
The viewer is expected to believe that being propositioned by Jennifer Aniston is so traumatic that it would drive a man to plot her murder.他们要观众相信,被詹妮弗安妮斯顿调戏是件多么痛不欲生的事儿,逼得被调戏的家伙只能策划一场对她的谋杀。
Kevin Spacey plays a more convincing psychoboss. But his talents are wasted on a lame script.而凯文史派西所扮演的神经病老板还让人信服一些,不过他的天赋也白白浪费在这个蹩脚的剧本上了。

Not many cons around; the place is virtually deserted. A VOICE echoes dimly over the P.A. system:VOICE (O.S.)Return to your cellblocks for evening count.Bogs enters his cell. Dark in here. He fumbles for the light cord, yanks it. The sudden light reveals Captain Hadley six inches from his face, waiting for him. Mert steps in behind Bogs. hemming him. Before Bogs can even open his mouth to say "what the fuck," Hadley rams the tip of his baton brutally into his solar plexus. He feebly tries to ward them off.73 2ND TIER 73Puzzled, Red steps from his cell, following the sound. It dawns on him that it's coming from above. He moves to the railing and leans out, craning around to look up --74 RED'S POV 74-- just as Bogs flips over the railing and comes sailingdirectly toward us, eyes bugging out, SCREAMING as he falls.75 RED (SLOW MOTION) 75jumps back as Bogs plummets past, missing him by inches, armsswimming and trying to grab the railing (but missing that too), SCREAMING aaaaalll the way down --76 GROUND FLOOR 76-- and impacting on Ernie's gassing mop cart in an enormous eruption of solvents and cleansers. The cart is squashed flat, shooting out from under Bogs and skidding across the cellblock floor like a tiddly wink, kicking up sparks for thirty yards. Ernie is left gaping in shock at Bogs and all the Bogs-related wreckage at his feet.77 2ND TIER 77Red is stunned. He very tentatively leans out and looks up. Above him, Hadley and Mert lean on the 3rd tier railing. Hadley tilts the cap back on his head, shakes his head.MERTDamn, Byron. Norton keeps his eyes on Andy, looking for a wrong glance or nervous blink. He takes the Bible out of Andy's hand.NORTONI'm pleased to see you reading this. Any favorite passages?ANDY"Watch ye therefore, for ye know not when the master of the house cometh." NORTON(smiles)Luke. Chapter 13, verse 35. Chapter 8, verse 12.NORTONI hear you're good with numbers. How nice. A man should have a skill.HADLEYYou wanna explain this?Andy glances over. Hadley is holding up a rock blanket, a polishing cloth roughly the size of an oven mitt.ANDYIt's called a rock blanket. It's for shaping and polishing rocks. Little hobby of mine. Hadley glances at the rocks lining the window sill, turns to Norton.HADLEYLooks pretty clean. Some contraband here, nothing to get in a twist over. Norton nods, strolls to the poster of Rita.NORTONI can't say I approve of this...(turns to Andy)...but I suppose exceptions can always be made.Norton exits, the guards follow. The cell door is slammed and locked. Norton pauses, turns back.NORTONI almost forgot. He reaches through the bars and returns the Bible to Andy.NORTONI'd hate to deprive you of this. Where's Brooks?Brooks Hatlen pokes his head out of the back room.BROOKSAndy! Thought I heard you out here!ANDYI've been reassigned to you.BROOKSI know, they told me. Ain't that a kick in the ass? I'm a convicted murderer who provides sound financial planning. That's a wonderful pet to have.REDGot you out of the laundry, didn't it?ANDYMaybe it can do more than that.(off their looks)How about expanding the library? Get some new books in there.HEYWOODHow you 'spect to do that, "Mr. Dufresne-if-you-please?"ANDYAsk the warden for funds.LAUGHTER all around. Andy blinks at them.BROOKSSon, I've had six wardens through here during my tenure, and I havelearned one great immutable truth of the universe: ain't one of 'em been born whose asshole don't pucker up tight as a snare drum when you ask for funds.93 INT -- MAIN BUILDING HALLWAY -- DAY (1949) 93DOLLYING Norton and Andy up the hall:NORTONNot a dime. 中文谚语故事Idiom stories
A collection of short stories of Chinese idiomsSynopsis of project: Exploring the broad meaning of Chinese idioms with the explanation of the literal and figurative meaning and how to use it in context. The corresponding short story will involve a situation that should effectively describe how to use the idiom in context.Accompanying the text would be the literal translation of the Chinese characters by illustrations and a brief explanation of how it is derived.Objectives:1. A book of collected short stories accompanied by illustrations and short notes on the Chinese idioms2. Introducing a different way to explore the Chinese language and its characters.3. To show how creative writing can help bring out the essence of the Chinese language4. A novel exercise to expound the possibilities of learning a language that has proven itself to be mysterious and difficult for a non-native to grasp.Idiom stories对牛弹琴-playing a musical instrument to a cowUsage: To waste your time talking to someone who is unreasonable or not involved in contextOrigin: Taken from context from a book of Chinese essays that describes how people talk past each other and misunderstand each other’s intentions.Story: Cows were once known as the most musical of the animal kingdom. They had excellent hearing abilities, detecting the highest decibels of sounds. Their udders produced different tones while they were milked, as they tapped gently along with their tails. Unfortunately, men were too inferior to realise this unique quality of their cows. People never thought about playing any musical instrument to cows as they are either very critical or choose to ignore the performer completely. In most cases, it is the latter.格格不入-not fitting into every squareUsage: When two people are so different, it is impossible to get alongOrigins: Taken from chapter 8 of a classic literary book whose writer remains anonymous. A man’s efforts is in vain as reflected in the imagery of two deers’antlers locked together as they push against each other in a futile attempt to win. Story: Squares have always prided themselves as the perfect shape. Their sleek asymmetrical form has no room for compromise; their inflexibility earned them a bad name. As people are built beyond the 1:1 ratio, they could previously never fit through the doors. Many sawed their limbs off to fit perfectly into the mould. In the old days, most people crawled about limbless, as it was fashionable to be square. However, over time aesthetics of the human form were revised, people grew proud and refused to fit into any mould. There differences started to arise and people started to take on personalities of their own.信口开河- the mouth of the letter opens a riverUsage: To spread rumours about other people without evidenceOrigins: From an anonymous author from a book of classic stories. A woman was said to have exaggerated a splash of water as a metre high, but the guy with her is out of control as he speaks and exaggerates about everything without truth or proof.Story: Ever opened a packet of sweets or juice and have the contents spilling out onto you? There was once a man who had a bad habit of spreading rumours and gossiping about everyone else in the village. He had broken up many families and relationships, but he just couldn’t stop himself. Someone eventually poisoned him and he suffered a mild spasm before waking up mute. Everyone was relieved that the resident troublemaker was finally taken care off. Little did they know, he had resorted to writing letters to sow discord amongst friends and lovers. The envelopes opened up rivers of lies and rumours, and it became too late for anyone to stop.狐假虎威-a fox pretending to be as mighty as a tigerA classic tale of an inferior animal pretending to be more ferocious than it is. Origins: From a children’s fable about a wily fox who fools a ferocious tiger that he was Heaven’s appointed animal to lord over the Kingdom. He convinces the tiger to take a walk behind him in the forest and the animals are petrified by the tiger’s presence, while the tiger mistakes it for the fox’s authority.Usage: someone with false pretence of being better than he really is.Story: There was once an ugly fox that was abandoned by his mother and the pack, as he was not only ugly but also afraid of everything in sight. Hungry and alone, he learnt to fend for himself, scarring badly and obtaining stripes all overhis back. He didn’t realize this at first, but the little animals seem to scuttle hurriedly out of his way when he passed. Much later, by the lake, he saw his own reflection and realized that he looked like a beaten up tiger as the scars made irregular stripes on his body. From then, he decided to carry on his identity as an ugly tiger for authority, rather than claim himself as a fox, given the advantages of being a powerful animal.画蛇添足-drawing a snake and adding legs.Origin:A rich person wanted to have some snakes painted. In order to get the best paintings, he asked several painters to do the drawings and he would commission the best to do the paintings. One of the painters finished ahead of others and he thought to distinguish his work from the rest by drawing some legs to his snakes. Obviously, he didn’t get the job. The lesson to be learnt is not to add unnecessary or inappropriate details to your work just to stand out from the crowd.Usage: to do something in a round about wayStory: There was once a very vain snake that admired the other animals with legs as he felt it made them look more symmetrical in proportions and animals with limbs were views as more aesthetically pleasing. No matter how hard he tried, it was impossible to attached twigs of sticks to his body so that he might have legs. This also made his movement a lot more inconvenient as he dragged his slithering body across the surface. One day, he was caught by a painter who noted this phenomenon and decided to make a painting of it, to capture the memory of that fateful day.。

SynopsisAn Inconvenient Truth focuses on Al Gore and his travels in support of his efforts to educate the public about the severity of the climate crisis. Gore says, "I've been trying to tell this story for a long time and I feel as if I've failed to get the message across." The film documents a Keynote presentation (dubbed the slide show) that Gore has presented throughout the world. It intersperses Gore's exploration of data and predictions regarding climate change and its potential for disaster with his own life story. The former vice president opens the film by greeting an audience with a joke: "I am Al Gore; I used to be the next President of the United States." Gore then begins his slide show on climate change; a comprehensive presentation replete with detailed graphs, flow charts and stark visuals. Gore shows off several majestic photographs of the Earth taken from multiple space missions, Earthrise and The Blue Marble. Gore notes that these photos dramatically transformed the way we see the Earth, helping spark modern environmentalism.Following this, Gore shares anecdotes that inspired his interest in the issue, including his college education with early climate expert Roger Revelle at Harvard University, his sister's death from lung cancer and his young son's near-fatal car accident. Gore recalls a story from his grade school years, where a fellow student asked his geography teacher about continental drift; in response, the teacher called the concept the "most ridiculous thing he'd ever heard." Gore ties this conclusion to the assumption that "the Earth is so big, we can't possibly have any lasting, harmful impact on the Earth's environment." For comic effect, Gore uses a clip from the Futurama episode "Crimes of the Hot" to describe the greenhouse effect. Gore refers to his loss to George W. Bush in the 2000 United States presidential election as a "hard blow" yet subsequently "brought into clear focus, the mission he had been pursuing for all these years."The Pale Blue Dot, a Voyager 1 photo showing Earth (circled) as a single pixel from 4 billion miles (6.4 billion kilometres) away, is featured in the film. Al Gore points out that all of human history has happened on that tiny pixel, which is our only home.Throughout the movie, Gore discusses the scientific opinion on climate change, as well as the present and future effects of global warming and stresses that climate change "is really not a political issue, so much as a moral one," describing the consequences he believes global climate change will produce if the amount ofhuman-generated greenhouse gases is not significantly reduced in the very near future. Gore also presents Antarctic ice coring data showing CO2 levels higher now than in the past 650,000 years. The film includes segments intended to refute critics who say that global warming is unproven or that warming will be insignificant. For example, Gore discusses the possibility of the collapse of a major ice sheet in Greenland or in West Antarctica, either of which could raise global sea levels by approximately 20 feet (6 m), flooding coastal areas and producing 100 million refugees. Melt water from Greenland, because of its lower salinity, could then halt the currents that keep northern Europe warm and quickly trigger dramatic local cooling there. It also contains various short animated projections of what could happen to different animals more vulnerable to climate change. The documentary ends with Gore arguing that if appropriate actions are taken soon, the effects of global warming can be successfully reversed by releasing less CO2 and planting more vegetation to consume existing CO2. Gore calls upon his viewers to learn how they can help him in these efforts. Gore concludes the film by saying:"Each one of us is a cause of global warming, but each one of us can make choices to change that with the things we buy, the electricity we use, the cars we drive; we can make choices to bring our individual carbon emissions to zero. The solutions are in our hands, we just have to have the determination to make it happen. We have everything that we need to reduce carbon emissions, everything but political will. But in America, the will to act is a renewable resource."During the film's end credits, a diaporama pops up on screen suggesting to viewers things at home they can do to combat climate change, including "recycle", "speak up in your community", "try to buy a hybrid vehicle" and "encourage everyone you know to watch this movie."Gore's book of the same title was published concurrently with the theatrical release of the documentary. The book contains additional information, scientific analysis, and Gore's commentary on the issues presented in the documentary. A 2007 documentary entitled An Update with Former Vice President Al Gore features Gore discussing additional information that came to light after the film was completed, such as Hurricane Katrina, coral reef depletion, glacial earthquake activity on the Greenland ice sheet, wildfires, and trapped methane gas release associated with permafrost melting.。
