The Necklace: Reflections and Confessions of Human’s Vanity “What would have happened if she hadn’t lost that necklace? Who knows? Who knows? How strange and changeful is life! How small a thing is needed to make or ruin us!” This is what impressed me most in “The Necklace” written by Guy de Maupassant. I love the story not only due to the incredibly wonderful ending, but also because of the exquisite description of the weakness of humanity. In his story, Guy de Maupassant creatively reveals Mathilde Loisel's dreams of a wealthy, splendid lifestyle. Mathilde's lifetime of misery and despair is solely caused by her own selfish acts. And her vain obsession all ended up ruining her life.Vanity is defined as excessive pride, especially in your appearance. In Mathilde's case, the "excessive pride" in her looks and charm caused her to feel as if she deserved a higher ranking social class and the wealth. When she wore the necklace to the party, she wanted to give the illusion that she was something that she was not. Vanity caused Mathilde to fantasize about her life and surroundings-to live in a world of illusion, rather than reality. Her life was affected in a negative way because of her obsession with vanity. It is so sad that she honestly felt successful the night of the dinner, just because of her looks and her surroundings. What a distortedview of true happiness and fulfillment! Neither an elegant dress or a beautiful piece of jewelry can make a person who they are. A caring and loving person has to be unselfish. Mathilde Loisel definitely lacked a caring and loving personality. The only person she proved to love was the person she wanted to be. Had Mathilde not spent so much of her life selfishly, she and Mr. Loisel could have had a lifetime of happiness. The most ironic and interesting piece of the story is the conclusion. Their lives were ruined for no reason. Had she told Mrs. Forrestier the truth about the lost necklace, she would have known that the necklace was just costume jewelry. Actually, it’s a tragedy made by herself, for she was conquered by the evil of her heart. In pursuit of vanity may lead to the loss of ourselves. Accept who we are and to be to true to ourselves or else it will contribute to constant unhappiness. Happiness or misfortune, it all depends.。

After reading "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, I was struck by the powerful message about the consequences of vanity and greed. The story follows the life of Mathilde Loisel, a woman who is never satisfied with her social status and constantly dreams of a more luxurious life. When she borrows a diamond necklace from a wealthy friend to wear to a party, she loses it and spends the next ten years working to repay the debt she incurred to replace it. In the end, she discovers that the original necklace was just a cheap imitation, and her years of toil were for nothing. One of the most striking aspects of the story is the way in which Maupassant portrays the destructive nature of materialism. Mathilde's desire for wealth and social status leads her to make foolish decisions that ultimately ruin her life. Her constant longing for more causes her to overlook the blessings she already has, such as a loving husband and a comfortable home. This serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of being consumed by greed and thepursuit of material possessions.Furthermore, the story also highlights the theme of deception. The necklace itself is a symbol of the false appearances that can lead to ruin. Mathilde is so preoccupied with the outward image of wealth and statusthat she fails to see the truth about herself and her situation. This serves as a reminder that true happiness and fulfillment come from within, rather than from external trappings. In addition, the ending of the story is a powerful commentary on the futility of vanity. Mathilde spends years working to repay the debt she incurred to replace the necklace, only to discover that it was worthless all along. This serves as a stark reminder that the pursuit of material possessions and social status is ultimately empty and meaningless. It also serves as a reminder that the consequences of our actions can be far-reaching and long-lasting.Overall, "The Necklace" is a thought-provoking andpoignant story that serves as a powerful commentary on the destructive nature of vanity and greed. Through the character of Mathilde Loisel, Maupassant illustrates the dangers of being consumed by materialism and the pursuit of social status. The story serves as a cautionary tale that reminds us to be grateful for what we have and to seek fulfillment from within, rather than from external trappings. It is a timeless and universal message that continues to resonate with readers today.。

Guy de Maupassant was the child of an unhappy marriage. His mother has been dessccrriibbeedd as neurotic and his father as a man who sought relief from his wife in the arms of other women. Perhaps the collapse of his parents' marriage engendered de Maupassant's pessimism, reflected particularly in his stories about infidelity and failed relationships. It certainly influenced his own attitude toward women, which, in turn, affected his creation of characters in stories such as "The Necklace." Events in History at the Time of the short story The purpose of women. De Maupassant's attitude toward women was ambivalent. He was one of few nineteenth-century authors to recognize and celebrate women's sensuality rather than regard it as a sign of corruption. He was also, however, devastatingly cruel to women, whether in his own life or in his fiction. He recommended that the French Academy commission a treatise on how to "break decently, properly, politely, without noise, scene or violence, with a woman who adores you and with whom you are fed up" (de Maupassant in Steegmuller, p. 178)。 He scoffed at monogamy, insisting that he could not understand how two women could not be better than one, three better than two, and ten better than three.

Reflection Paper of“ The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant项链by 莫泊桑Thesis statement: By the representations made in the story “The Necklace ”, we can realize that No matter what kind of surroundings we have, we should always follow ourbasic truth, give up vanity and pride. In the start of the story, we know about Mathilde was dissatisfied with her life. She wanted to become upper-class lady, join the life of noble, elegant. This was obviously not reliable. She was vanity, but avoided life of suffering is human nature, who doesn’ t want a good life? Who is willing to endure poverty and ugly? Mathilde was pretty and charming; it is because she is such a beautiful girl, so that her heart is full of grievances and resentment. That’ s the reason why she is unhappy all the day.Mathilde didn ’ t want to face the reality but she put her vanity and ideal all in the dream, at this time, poor Mathilde had completely been captured by vanity, but she never wanted to hide her desire and pain, so she was not hypocrisy. The vanity of true feelings expression may make usfeel uncomfortable, and we can't help to criticized a few words. For Mathilda, she didn't use her false side to get lavish lifestyle what she really wanted to get. She followed her own basic truth, maintained their dignity. In life there is a lot of helplessness, especially for her - little women that had no money, especially after the lost necklace, owed a huge debt. In this kind of strike, she finally abandoned her daydreams, faced reality, with her honest earning. Why did she choose to pay this way? Actually she can run away, bilk or she can tell her friend"the truth". But she didn't do this; we can see that she had her own self-esteem. There still a way that she can dress up in the street at night use her beauty to attract men's attention, that would be easily pay off her debt. She didn ’t have any hesitate to choose a way full of thistles and thorns. Mathilde fetch and carry for the money, suffered gird from other people, save coins to pay her debt. A beautiful woman becomes old and ugly, she changed, not only her appearance, but also her essence. These things pulled her uealistic from the cloud back to the ground, now there is a new Mathilde.Mathilde learned that there is a beauty called give up. After lost the necklace, she needs to make a choice of youth, beauty and personal dignity she decided to give up the youth, choose dignity. Atfirst Mathilde was captured by a strong terrifying vanity, later, she made a surprising decision. Finally, when she met her still beautiful young friend again, and knew the truth, there is a brilliant smile on her face; the smile is a sign of her confidence and pride. The thought-provoking place in this novel is from the Dirty, false and money-oriented society,we witnessed a heart of gold, a lotus of the silt but not imbrued. Mathilde is unfortunate becauseshe can’ t get things that she deserves. She is fortunate at the same time, the cruel reality lether awake, life is not only the illusion of fog, is more down-to-earth walk step by step.

Section:1103Student Number:5101110321Name:Betty“The Necklace” Review The Necklace is a short story written by Guy de Maupassant who is a popular 19th century French writer and is considered one of the fathers of the modern short story. The story takes place in a romantic nation,France and in the 19th century or so.It tells the story of Madame Mathilde Loisel and her husband Mr.Loisel.Mr.Loisel brings a converted dinner invitation home and Madame Mathilde Loisel is well prepared for the forthcoming evening party which she spends 400 francs on a gorgeous dress and borrows a superb diamond necklace from her friend,Madame Forestier. As expected, she becomes the center of attraction.Unfortunately, after the party, upon arriving home,Madame Loisel notices that the necklace is gone.In the decade, the cpuple’s life suffers drastic and radical changes.Guy de Maupassant’s portrayal of Mathilde is very realistic. It can be assumed by the reader that Mathilde is a vain and pretentious woman. She feels herself born for every delicacy and luxury. She loves clothes, jewels and feels that she is made for them. She has longed so eagerly to charm,to be desired,to be wildly attractive and sought after. She is self-centered,self-willed and ungrateful to her husband although he provides her with a furnished apartment, sufficient food and even a maid. The reader can get the sense when her husband goes through a lot of trouble to get her an invitation to the party at the ministry, instead of being thrilled as Mr.Loisel hasexpected, she acts like a spoiled child, throwing the invitation on the table and complaining that she has nothing to wear.Mathilde is so vain that if I were her h usband,I wouldn’t be docile and obedient to her no matter how much I love her.Contrasting to the pretentious and headstrong Mathilde who dreams of a wealthy, decadent lifestyle and doesn’t want to achieve something valuable through her own efforts, Mr.Loisel is a Section:1103Student Number:5101110321Name:Betty conscientious man who is an average guy with an average job at the Ministry of Education as a clerk. He doesn't seem to be bothered by their basic yet comfortable lifestyle.Mr.Loisel is obviously excited the day that The Minister of Education had invited them to an exquisite dinner.Surely he thinks that this is finally a way that he could provide an outlet for Mathilde's deepest desires. When Mathilde begins to cry about not having anything to wear.Of course Mr.Loisel suddenly feels into her trap and suddenly decides to give her all of the money in his savings account to buy her a new dress.Mr.Loisel makes such a huge financial sacrifice for her.He loves Mathilde so madly that like a parent spoils his child. It is also highlighted that after the party,Mr.Loisel thoughtfully tries to protect his wife from the cold weather with a shawl. One also learns from “The Necklace” about the theme is that how a person's social environment can and does shape that person. In the world that we as people all live in everyday, there is much chaos.Almost everyone has their own points of view, their own belief system and their own way of thinking. Most of which is determined by the environment, in which they have been raised and have lived in.The entire story of the Necklace is the epitome of illustrating how one socialenvironment does affect their characters. At the beginning of the story, while Mathilde is financially ok, she is somewhat reserved, and much more of a hopeful dreamer. As time passes by, and she is forced to work hard to repay the debt that she has brought onto herself, she begins to lose sight of her dream, and eventually becomes full of spite and malice for what was once her dream. As she falls down the economic ladder, her environment changes, and with that, her personality, and character. The reader witnesses a transition from the optimistic dreamer to the pessimist, as her dreams become more and more distant. If she had begun at Section:1103Student Number:5101110321Name:Betty the very bottom where the story closes, and finished where she started, she may not have taken for granted what she had.Had Mathilde not spent so much of her life selfishly, she and Mr.Loisel could have had a lifetime of happiness. This story does indeed merit reading and comes highly recommended. The reader will enjoy Guy de Maupassant’s lively and realistic description of the characters, particularly Madame Mathilde Loisel. The theme of the effect of social environment on a person helps the read er deeply understand that a person’s dream can’t be far removed from his or her st but not least,a caring and loving person has to be unselfish and care for others and their feelings.
