Procrastination

Hello everyone!I’ m Betty. I’ m L level.

In our daily life,have you ever had these experiences? For example, final exams are approaching, but you don’t want to study or review until the last day before the exams. Or, tomorrow is task deadline, but you are still playing the games and looking through posts in various forums. You know you have urgent things to do, but you always did not start it until the last minute.

Now we have a word to describe this symptom—procrastination. Procrastination refers to behaviors that are unnecessary but cause harmful consequences. In other words, we put off things till tomorrow. Currently this word is not a strictly psychological or medical term. It’s only an internet word. However, it has become an important research topic in management and psychology.

There are four reasons causing procrastination.

1.Perfectionism. People who are perfectionists don’t want to have a rushed

beginning. They hope everything is ready.

2.The tasks are abstract. When we face completely unfamiliar tasks, we don’t know

how to start it and where to begin. At this moment, we find it hard to finish and feel very anxious.

3.Think a lot. Our brain likes to think simple things. However we often go to

extremes to think all things clearly and then start it. As a result of considering too many details, we gradually feel the task is complex and difficult. And then we may feel cowarded by it. Therefore, people have no interest in finishing tasks. In this way, thinking a lot equals to thinking nothing.

How can we kill our procrastination? Here are some advices.

1.Reduce distractions. Ask yourself: what are the three most common distractions

that keep me from doing my work? Figure it ou t and keep them away from you by, for example, shutting door to your office, putting your phone on silent mode for an hour at a time or by having notifications for email shut off.

2.Make small move at one time. Although striving for perfection maybe a noble

principle, it costs long time and much energy. You only need to start the first step instead of thinking a lot.

3.Set up a rewarding system. Rewarding yourself with something you enjoy after

you complete every step.

4.Effective supervision. Finding some friends together to overcome this bad habit is

much easier than going alone. You can tell your specific plans to your friends and set a deadline. Let your friends supervise you.

Maybe someone still believes the deadline is the first productive force. But we also realize procrastination is the thief of time and a lot of people suffer from it. So get rid of it, for your better life!
