Internet companies often receive requests by law enforcement for customer information to help with ongoing investigation. Rarely, however, (21)______ a court order hit up a Web hosting company for upwards of 1.3 million IP addresses to find out who’s been visiting a particular Web site.

That’s exactly what happened recently when the U.S. Justice Department tried to get the company Dream Host to turn over contact information, e-mails, photos and data related to a Web site called DisruptJ20. DisruptJ20 (22)______(involve)in organizing protests against the Trump administration.

Dream Host bristled at the court order and filed (23)______ appeal. Company special counsel Chris Ghazarian told me that Dream Host rarely gets requests to turn over that much client information. IP addresses, in particular, can identify (24)______ computers visited a site, when they visited, what they viewed and (25)______ how long. IP address can also be used to reveal a Web user’s identity.

The Justice Department later revised its request, saying it was not going to force Dream Host to turn over text and photos from blog posts written but never (26)______(post)to DisruptJ20.

A Washington, D.C., Superior Court then (27)______ (far) amended the government’s request. Monster storm Sandy, which had claimed nearly 70 lives in the Caribbean, hit the ___31___ populated U.S. East Coast with 80mph winds early last week.

Just before the storm center made landfall in New Jersey, forecasters stripped it of hurricane ___32___ based on its shape and internal temperature. But the storm still packed hurricane-force winds, and forecasters said it remained every bit as dangerous.

Sandy knocked out power to at least 3.1 million people across the East. At least 95 deaths were

___33___ on the storm, which threatened 50 million people. The storm hurled an unprecedented 13-foot surge of seawater at New York City, ___34___ its subways and the electrical system that ___35___ Wall Street. The New York Stock Exchange was closed on the first two days last week, and this was the first two-day closing of the NYSE because of weather since a blizzard in 1888.

III. Reading Comprehension

Section A

Directions:For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

In the early 1980s, a Harvard University biologist named Edward O. Wilson proposed a theory that humans are instinctively ___41___ towards their natural surroundings. Many 21st century parents, however, would question this theory, as they watch their kids express a clear ___42___ for sitting on a couch in front of a screen over playing outside.

The national ___43___ about kids spending too much time indoors has become so extreme that the crisis has a name: Nature deficit disorder, which indicates kids spend significantly more time inside than outside. This shift is ___44___ due to technology. Richard Louv, author of the book Last Child in the Woods tells the story of interviewing a child who told him that he liked playing indoors more than outdoors “because that’s where all the electrical outlets are.”

Increasing parental fears about diseases and dangers of playing outside—despite evidence to the ___45___—are another big factor.

And as suburbs continue to expand, nature is parceled off more, and kids seem less inclined to spend time in a fenced-in yard, let alone jump the fence into a neighbor’s or walk in the woods. Instead, indoor activities can seem easier, safer, and even more ___46___ for kids who are growing up with multiplayer video games and social media accounts.

Why go outside?

Recent studies have exposed the benefit—even ___47___—of spending time outdoors that kids who play outside are smarter, happier, more attentive, and less anxious than kids who spend more time indoors. While it’s unclear how exactly the cognitive functioning and mood improvements occur, there are a few things we do know about why nature is good for kids’ minds.

It builds confidence and promotes creativity. The way that kids play in nature has a lot less structure than most types of indoor play. There are infinite ways to ___48___with outdoor environments, from the backyard to the park to the local hiking trail, and letting your children choose how they treat nature means they have the power to control their own actions. They can also think more freely, design their own activities and ___49___ the world in inventive ways.

It teaches responsibility. Living things die if ___50___ or not taken care of properly, and entrusting a child to take care of the living parts of their environment means they’ll learn what happens when they forget to water a plant, or pull a flower out by its roots.

It provides different ___51___. Nature may seem less exhilarating than your son’s video game, but ___52___, it activates more senses—you can see, hear, smell, and touch outdoor environments. “As the young spend less and less of their lives in natural surroundings, their senses narrow,” Louv warns, “and this reduces the ___53___ of human experience.”

It makes them think. Louv says that nature creates a unique sense of ___54___ for kids that no other environment can provide. The phenomena that occur naturally in backyards and parks everyday make kids ask questions about the earth and the life that it supports.

So while screen time is the easier, more popular choice, it’s important to ___55___ time for outdoor play.

Section B

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

(A)

Yes, I admit it. I’m a true, incurable book abuser. I like to fold dog ears. I like to break my books open so that their backs crack.

I had a friend, who loved rubbing all the pages. I have another friend who is the exact opposite.

She needs to keep her books completely new. I understand her. But once I get to know the book, I can’t help but show it some tough love. Because, believe me, although it sounds like I’m an abuser without a heart, that’s what it’s all about. Not hidden aggre ssions, or a lack of respect; not at all. Let me explain.

I have one book by my favorite author Diana Gabaldon that looks like rubbish. It’s completely wrinkled up from rain, and on its way to falling apart. I brought it like that to have her sign it. I hope she’s realized what an honor it is to her as a writer. It means, basically, that I’ve read the book to bits. I wouldn’t bother to mistreat books that don’t mean anything to me. Only the best books get read well, carried everywhere, worth intense reading where I’m so caught up with words that I will spill coffee over it.

For my further defense, I would like to call in a witness. I have a cook book. Like almost all my other cook books, it’s worn, and there are dirty marks of food in it. The book is called Tex-Mex-Food, Music and the Joy of Life from Texas. Just as the title suggests, this is more than a cook book.

These are the words on the very first page:

Tex-Max hasn’t been trendy for over 30 years. Considering it’s anything but cheap in calories, it probably never will be, either. Tacos(墨西哥卷)are instead all about such an untrendy things as a love for life. It’s something you enjoy while spending time with your loved ones.

We hope, therefore, that this cook book will soon be as dirty as a really old and used cook book should be.

Oh, how true! How wonderfully put! And it’s the same thing for books: whether you’re a book preserver or a book abuser, the approach is based on love and a joy for life. Because I believe all who are passionate about books, are passionate people.

56.According to the passage, the writer often does the following to his book except ______.

A.have it dog-eared

B.carry it everywhere

C.keep it tidy

D.have dirty marks in it

57.Why does the writer treat his favorite books badly?

A.To cover up his disrespect for its author.

B.To conceal his aggressions to things around.

C.To express his objection to the book preserver.

D.To show his strong affection for the book.

58.The book Tex-Mex-Food, Music and the Joy of Life from Texas is mentioned by the writer to show that ______.

A.it is really common to have dirty marks in the cook book

B.Tex-Max is not popular mainly because it’s low in calories

C.the writer is not alone with the view that books should be abused

D.one must try some food like Tex-Max to experience the love for life

59.What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.The defense of one who treats books badly.

B.The reasons why a certain book is preferred.

C.The book lovers’ different habits of reading.

D.The different ways to treat different books.

Beijing is hardly alone in its air pollution problems. The world Health Organization has said that roughly half of the world’s urban population is exposed to pollution at least 2.5 times higher than it recommends.

While it may take years to fix this global problem, innovative minds in the Asia region have come up with creative solutions for living with air pollution.

DIY Purifier

Thomas Talhelm started worrying about the air inside his Beijing home during “airpocalypse”(空气末日) in 2013 when Beijing’s air quality index skyrocketed to a terrifying 755.

The scholar couldn’t afford the luxury of an expensive air purifier. “Filters (过滤器) are actually very simple—a high efficient filter is all you need to get over 96% of the PM2.5,”he said.

With three of his friends, Talhelm created Smart Air, an air purifier consisting of a basic household fan with a highly efficient filter attached to it.

It works as efficiently as the big brands selling for thousands of dollars, removing more than 90 percent of PM2.5 in your room, according to Talhelm’s research.

Invisible Mask

Infipure’s “nose mask” claims to cut 99% of PM2.5 without the trouble of a surgical face mask. The filters, made from special materials, are inserted into your nose and aim to be undetectable. “People care about their health, but don’t want all the downsides that come with a traditional face mask,” Infipure co-founder Francis Law explained.

Plant Backpack

Taiwanese artist Chui Chih has designed a survival device for an apocalyptic world.

Named Voyage on the Planet, a potted plant is housed inside a clear backpack hooked up to two tubes to bring fresh air to a face mask. It’s a bold, abstract idea from an oxygen tank.

Smog Vacuum

Daan Roosegaarde has been working on a smog vacuum that will suck pollutants from the sky to the ground like a vacuum, making way for clean air.

A byproduct of this smog vacuum, namely The Smog Free Tower, is the “smog ring”—a piece of jewelry made from smog particulates(微粒).

“The pollution we suck up, the small particulates, we don’t throw them away. We put them under pressure for a couple of weeks and they crystallize, creating something like a diamond,” Roosegaarde explains.

60.Thomas Talhelm invented Smart Air for all the following reasons except _______.

A. the high price of the big brands

B. the help from three of his friends

C. the poor quality of the indoor air

D. the simple principle behind the device

61.If someone wants to travel around in those polluted days, which product will be most

probably chosen for the sake of convenience?

A. Smart Air.

B. Infipure’s no se mask.

C. Voyage on the Planet.

D. The Smog Free Tower.

62. In which solution the inventor also makes use of the dust collected from the polluted air?

A. DIY Purifier.

B. Invisible Mask.

C. Plant Backpack.

D. Smog Vacuum.

In the spring of 1878, Vincent van Gogh turned 25. As he looked back over his short life, the Dutchman found little to celebrate among the endeavors of his faltering career. By conventional, middle-class standards, he was a failure. After a couple of dead-end teaching jobs in England, as well as a short, forgettable spell working in a bookshop in Dordrecht, he moved to Amsterdam to become a minister of religion, following in his father’s footsteps. At the end of 1878, he set off for the depressed coalmining district of the Borinage to the west of the city of Mons in Belgium, determined to establish himself as a preacher(牧师)to the working class.

There, he lived in a humble hut, gave away much of his money, and changed his smart clothes into the practical work-wear of the “Borins”. Unfortunately, he was not a gifted speaker, so his meetings were sparsely attended. His inability to connect with the local coalminers was compounded by a practical, linguistic difficulty: he couldn’t make head or tail of their quick-fire regional dialect known as “Walloon French” while they were mystified by his own attempts at French, which to their ears sounded overly formal. In July 1879, only half a year after he had arrived in the region, he received another setback: the authorities terminated his trial religious appointment.

Yet it was at this rock-bottom moment that van Gogh, now 26, started to draw. “I often feel homesick for the country of paintings,” he wrote to his brother Theo in the summer of 1880. He felt sympathy for the working-class miners. For the first time in his life, middle-class van Gogh was friends with poor, working-class people. The people were poor and illiterate, and their work was hard and dangerous. Yet for van Gogh, there was some kind of bigger truth in their simple way of life. After he became an artist, he chose to find his subject matter there. Like artists that he admired, such as Jean- Francois Millet, he wanted to portray the life of working-class people, and he remained interesting in doing so certainly for the first half of his career. Really, it stayed important to him forever. In addition to this general concern for everyday reality and the rural poor, particular themes that van Gogh encountered in the Borinage would later feature prominently in his art. As he once put it in a letter “It was in the Borinage that I began to work from nature for the first time.”

Few works from van Gogh’s Borinage period survived, because the artist burned most of them. As he revealed in a letter to a friend, he felt they were too clumsy or related to an uncertain time when he was still developing his own style and artistic voice.

63. What happened to Vincent van Gogh in 1878?

A. He learned a lot from different jobs.

B. He felt dissatisfied with his career.

C. He was a member of the working class.

D. He became the apprentice of his father.

64. Why did van Gogh have difficulty communicating with the local miners?

A. The miners didn’t appreciate his dressing style.

B. Their French wasn’t agreeable in each other’s ear.

C. His French pronunciation wasn’t standard.

D. He had trouble in making a speech.

65. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Van Gogh interacted with working-class people all through his life even though he was born

middle-class.

B. Van Gogh and Jean-Francois Millet both found inspiration from the rural people in the

Borinage.

C. Van Gogh paintings in the Borinage mirrored the life of working-class people.

D. V an Gogh ruined many of his works in the Bornage because his artistic voice was unheard

虎门中学高三周测英语试题1 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A The small coastal town of Broome, in northwest Australia, is a remote village in the vast countryside. There are no traffic jams and hardly any roads. There is only the massive Australian wild land, where some houses are 500 miles apart and some driveways are 50 miles long. There seem to be only two main sources of entertainment out here: the sunset at the beach and Sun Pictures. Sun Pictures is a very different movie theater:The seats are park benches and deck chairs, but you’re also welcome to sit on the grass. It is the world’s oldest outdoor movie garden. Sun Pictures was built in 1916 on the other side of the globe from Hollywood. All the big films were shipped here and the lonely country was amazed. Broome resident Pearl Hamaguchi has never traveled far from home. But in the Sun Pictures chairs, under the deep blue night sky, she has been almost everywhere. “And we came back excited about Gregory Peck,” she recalled. This is one of the few places left in the world where you can see two sets of stars at the same time-----one set in the sky, the other in the film. Each night, dozens of people from around the world line up at the old wooden stand, with no computer in sight, and buy their tickets to the latest films. Sun Pictures is also a museum, exhibiting projectors(放映机) that date back to the silent films, a portrait gallery of the famous people who never knew about this place---- even though they came here all the time. Every once in a while, I’m told, you might find a non-ticket holder in your seat. That’s why it’s always a good idea to shake out your chair to make sure there are no spiders or scorpions. “We’ve only had a couple of scorpion incidents but no one’s been stung yet,” said Aaron Mestemaker, a tourist visiting from Michigan. Sun Pictures is a holy hall of movie history and a reminder that air conditioning and carpet are no match for grass and fresh air---even when the lizards steal the scene. 21. The first two paragraphs want to show that__________. A. living in Broome is inconvenient B. the life in Broome is boring C. few people like to live in Broome D. Broome is simple but vast 22. Sun Pictures is different from other theaters because _________. A. it is the most historical outdoor theater in the world B. the audience can either sit on chairs or on the grass C. it was built by some constructor from Hollywood D. all the films were imported here from Hollywood 23. Gregory Peck is most probably the name of_________. A. a place B. a film C. a movie star D. a country fellow
