21.(6分)Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?

In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.

It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(破坏) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative and do not like change.

Although we have to respect people’s fe elings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.

1、What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph? A.Some of them are not attractive.

B.Most of them are too expensive to preserve.

C.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.

D.They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.

2、Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?

A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.

B.Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.

C.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.

D.No one understands why people speak against new buildings.

3、By “move things forward” in the last paragraph, the author probably means

“_______”.

A.destroy old buildings B.put things in a different place

C.choose new architectural style D.respect people's feelings for historical buildings 4、What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To explain why people dislike change.

B.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.

C.To warn that we could end up living in caves.

D.To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.

(8分)Google’s new artificial intelligence can defeat both humans and other AIs.

22.

Fortunately, the only war zone where it fights and wins is the ancient board game Go(围棋).

AlphaGo Zero, developed by Google—owned DeepMind, is the latest AI program. The original AlphaGo defeated Go master Lee Sedol last year, and Alphago Master, an updated version, went on to win 60 games against top human players. What’s different about AlphaGo Zero is that it became potentially the world’s best Go player with any help from humans.

The program AlphaGo Zero started off knowing only the basic rules and then played millions of games against itself in just a few days. After almost five million games played against itself, AlphaGo Zero could outplay humans and the original AlphaGo. After 40 days, it was capable of beating AlphaGo Master.

The program learned the strategies humans accumulated over thousands of years in a matter of weeks and also developed nontraditional strategies and moves that beat the techniques of the h uman masters, leaving them astonished. “At each stage of the game, it seems to gain a bit here and lose a bit there, but somehow it ends up slightly ahead, as if by magic,” said Andrew Jackson of the American Go Association DeepMind says it has plans for the technology behind AlphaGo Zero beyond just defeating all over an ancient game board. “In the end, we want to apply these

breakthroughs to helping solve all sorts of pressing real world problems like designing new materials,” said Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, in a statement. real world

That sounds great, but just as a precaution, let’s take the advice of Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking and keep any super—fast learning AI away from the nuclear launch codes for now.

1、Which was probably the earliest Al program to play Go according to the text’? A.DeepMind.

B.AlphaGo Zero.

C.AlphaGo Master.

D.AlphaGo.

2、What makes AlphaGo Zero different from its other versions?

A.It beats AlphaGo Master.

B.It teaches itself.

C.It knows the basic rules of Go.

D.It plays against itself for a long time.

3、What’s DeepMind’s plan for the AI technology?

A.To design a new version.

B.To win all the ancient board games.

C.To inspire the world with solutions to global issues.

D.To beat human beings all over the world.

4、How does the author feel about AI?

A.Cautious.

B.Supportive.

C.Negative.

D.Encouraging.

25.(10分)When I arrived at university, I had nothing in my bank account but was given a brand new overdraft (透支). I’d never had one before. So it was ve ry excited to spend money on shopping, nights out, and all the junk food my mum had never let me eat. I managed to max out (达到最高限度) my account within three months and suddenly life wasn’t so much fun.

I spent the last two weeks before Easter on a diet of porridge and became

self-loathing (自我憎恨的) and I also blamed Asda (阿斯达超市) for all the two-for-one deals I couldn’t resist. Now I’m working full-time to repay my debts. I’m also setting up a separate bank account for my student loan to go into to cover rent a nd bills. So I’ll be able to keep an eye on my spending.

After my experience in halls — being kept awake until 4 a.m. and work surfaces permanently covered in mind —I’m looking forward to moving into a house with friends. The partying and social life in halls are fantastic, but sometimes you’re put with people you don’t get on with, and it’s hard to cope with that. It helped me to stay strong, but I wish I had stood up to them rather than felt bullied.

I had a really bad time in my first year, which is why I’m going to make the most of university next year. I’m going to balance work with a social life, hit Freshers’ week hard and join some societies. With university handing me so many opportunities on a plate, I want to take up as many as I can and enjoy myself.

Dear Bob,

The problem you face was very common nowadays. I have working parents too. So I would like to give some advice from my own experience.

Firstly, you must try to understand what your parents work so hard. It is sure because they love you. They want to give you all the things you need for the good life. It is possible for them to stop working because die whole family depends on you. Secondly, you should believe in that your parents do care about how you feel and want you to be happy. However, you just need to find ways to spend time with them and tell them you miss them. Try not complain about things too much. Instead, try to find solution together with your parents.

Best wishes,

2023-2024学年江苏省南通市如皋市度高三上学期调研(一)英语试题

2023-2024学年江苏省南通市如皋市度高三上学期调研(一)英语试题 Four beautiful trips combining bikes and trains Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail (小径) The trail is an 87-mile pathway from Cleveland to Bolivar in Northeast Ohio. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) stretches out separately along the trail from Akron to Thornburg Station, a 31-mile stretch that passes through Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The trail hugs the outline of the original Ohio and Erie Canal. Today, the trail passes many landmarks, including bridges, museums, and villages. Danube Cycle Path It is a path that follows the Danube River for about 745 miles, from Donaueschingen, Germanny to Budapest, Hungary. The path is most popular in Austria featuring 245 scenic miles serviced by local and long-distance trains. Most cyclists choose to ride from west to cast with the flow of the river, to take advantage of the natural slope (斜坡) of bicycle traffic. Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail The tail extends for 25 miles through woodlands next to the Lehigh Rive. A historic tourist railway called the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway follows the trail, allowing cyclists to create a one- way ride rather than backtracking. The rail trail is mostly flat and passes through Lehigh Gorge State Park. While the train operates most days, the bike service is only offered one weekend a month from May to November. Cinder Track The Cinder Track is a 21-mile broken-stone pathway along the coast of Yorkshire, England: The towns of Scarborough and Whitby, where the trail begins and ends, both have train stations near the trail. The train journey is not a direct pathway between the two towns—in fact, the tracks of the original direct pathway were removed to create the trail. The trail, meanwhile, hugs the Yorkshire coast, with views of seaside bluffs (峭壁), fishing villages, etc. 1. What is special about the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail? A.It offers a chance to visit museums. B.It goes past many cities and villages. C.It shares most of its trail with CVSR. D.It provides cyclists with a view of the sea. 2. What’s the disadvantage of the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for cyclists? A.The numerous sharp slope. B.The extremely rough path. C.The connection with a railway. D.The time limit of bike service. 3. Which of the following covers the longest distance?

江苏省南通市2023-2024学年高三上学期开学统考英语试题学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、阅读理解 There are thousands of incredible trails that allow us to get up close to nature and here are 4 of the best hiking trails in the world. Pennine Way, the United Kingdom Stretching 268 miles from the Derbyshire Peak District to the Scottish Borders, the Pennine Way is the United Kingdom’s most famous long-distance path. The entire walk takes around three weeks, passing over wild east of Manchester and through the picturesque Yorkshire Dales, before crossing the ancient border of Hadrian’s Wall and moving on toward Scotland. Camino de Santiago de Compostela, Spain Rather than following a single path, the Camino, also known as the Way of St James, is actually a series of different pilgrimage (朝圣) routes. The most popular modem route follows a line across northern Spain from the French Pyrenees. While some choose to stay at monasteries (修道院) along the way, plenty of operators offer hotel stays and luggage transfers. Appalachian Trail, the United States Extending for 2,200 miles, the Appalachian Trail is billed as the longest hiking-only footpath in the world. It runs from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine, passing through some of the most remote places in the United States. Those keen on comfort can use companies like Go Shenandoah, which offers pre-booked accommodation and packed lunches. The Basho Wayfarer, Japan This self-guided trip follows a route taken by the poet Matsuo Basho over 300 years ago. The six-day hike starts in Sendai and works its way through the northern Toboku region, passing through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hiraizumi and along the ancient Dewa Kaido path, with its wonderful forests, before heading into the mountains of Natagiri-toge and finishing at the temple of Yamadera. 1.Which hiking trail will allow hikers to see the old wall?
