Being a man has always been dangerous. ②There are about 105 males born for every 100 females, but this ratio drops to near balance at the age of maturity, and among 70-year-olds there are twice as many women as men.

③But the great universal of male mortality is being changed. ④Now, boy babies survive almost as well as girls do. ⑤This means that, for the first time, there will be an excess of boys in those crucial years when they are searching for a mate. ⑥More important, another chance for natural selection has been removed. ⑦Fifty years ago, the chance of a baby (particularly a boy baby) surviving depended on its weight. A kilogram too light or too heavy meant almost certain death. ⑧Today it makes almost no difference. Since much of the variation is due to genes, one more agent of evolution has gone.

①There is another way to commit evolutionary suicide: stay alive, but have fewer children. ②Few people are as fertile as in the past. ③Except in some religious communities, very few women have 15 children. ④Nowadays the number of births, like the age of death, has become average. ⑤Most of us have roughly the same number of offspring. ⑥(16)Again, differences between people and the opportunity for natural selection to take advantage of it have diminished. ⑦India shows what is happening. The country offers wealth for a few in the great cities and poverty for the remaining tribal peoples.

⑧The grand mediocrity of today—everyone being the same in survival and number of offspring—means that natural selection has lost 80% of its power in upper-middle-class India compared to the tribes.

7、What used to be the danger in being a man according to the first paragraph? [A] A lack of mates. [B] A fierce competition. [C] A lower survival rate. [D] A defective gene.

When all the animals of a species die out, the whole loses. That creature is gone forever. Many people are worried about this happening to large numbers of wild animals. They spend time complaining to help preserve wildlife. One of the best known preservationists is Joan Embery. She is a attractive young woman who works for the San Diego zoo.

Joan Embery's vast knowledge of animals makes her a frequent guest on TV talk shows. She has been on the "Johnny Carson Show" over forty times. She explains common errors in thinking about wildlife. For example, gorillas (大猩猩) aren't the ferocious beats they appear to be. They're really quite shy. Monkeys that smile aren't as happy as they may seem. In fact, a monkey's ear-to-ear grin means "watch out". Snakes really help nature by eating harmful insects. So people should try to protect them. Joan Embery hopes that once people understand animals better, they will do their best to preserve them.

Joan helped pioneer the field of zoo work for women. Before she became well known, few women were connected with this field. It was not considered a desirable profession. Now many women work in zoos.

"It's a great feeling to help keep an animal thriving on earth," says Joan. Anyone who cares about wildlife certainly agrees. How lucky animals are to have a friend like Joan Embery!

最新中考英语英语阅读理解试题(及答案) 一、英语阅读理解专项练习试卷 1.阅读理解 That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me. As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers (抢劫犯). Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets. About a block from my apartment (公寓房间), I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining street-light. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the street. Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired any more, and I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the street anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found. Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck (垃圾车) pull up to the street next to me. When a voice called from the inside, "Alisa Camacho?" I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eyes. "Is this what you're looking for?" he asked, holding up a small square shape. It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn't be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other. (1)How did the writer feel when she was walking home after work? A. Cold and sick. B. Fortunate and helpful. C. Disappointed and helpless. D. Satisfied and cheerful. (2)From the first paragraph, we learn that the writer was busy _________. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message. The press offers a fairly cheap method, and magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local market. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Public notices are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertisement. There can be no doubt that the growth in advertisement is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and medicines have been built up largely by advertisement. We might ask whether the cost of advertisement is paid for by the producer or by the customer. Since advertisement forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for the advertisement. However, if large-scale advertisement leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less. It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertisement on sales. When the market is growing, advertisement helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertisement may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertisement if they were not convinced of its value to them. 1. Advertisement is often used to _______. A. deceive customers B. increase production C. arouse suspicion D. push the sale 2. The word “media ” (in the first paragraph) includes_______ A. the press B. television C. radio D. all of the above 3. Advertisement is mainly paid for by ________ A. the customer B. the producer C. increased sales D. reduced prices 4. Advertisement can increase demand ________ A. all the time B. in any circumstances
