Alright?英国⼈真的⾮常⾮常喜欢说‘Alright?’,适合任何场合。

这个词并不是问你“是不是还好?”,其实对于英国⼈来说,‘Alright?’就是⽤来打招呼的,相当于‘How are you?’Gutted这个词相当于devastated,如果⼀个⼈考试没过,或是跟男/⼥票分⼿了,⼜或是经历了其他惨案,可能会⽤到这个词‘Gutted’,⽐如‘I'm gutted that I didn'tget a higher mark on that chemistry exam.’Knackered留学刚开始,或者是和⼩伙伴们彻夜通宵,趴体之后,会经常听见这个词,表⽰‘exhausted or worn out’筋疲⼒尽Nice One常⽤短语‘nice one’可以⽤于讽刺,也可以⽤于发⾃肺腑的zan赏。

通常⽤在句⼦当中,⽐如‘Oh, you're being cheeky today, aren't you?’ Taking the PissTaking the Piss=吐槽,你可以吐槽你的朋友重⾊轻友,电视节⽬很烂,或者教授的课枯燥乏味。

⽐如,‘Those guys were taking the piss out of our professor X last night. ’(说这话的时候,先看下四周有没有教授出没)Skive Off偷个⼩懒,⽐如某⼈想睡个懒觉,不想去上课/上班,就会说‘I'm going to try to skive off work/classtoday and sleep instead.’Cock Up表⽰犯错,⽽且这个错误⽐较严重。

For Derek Veal, it all started when he explored his grandfather’s old house in Georgia. He found an old suitcase filled with photographs, some more than 100 years old.The suitcase belonged to his great-grandmother, who had Alzheimer’s (老年痴呆症) and lived in a nursing home. Veal and his grandfather went to visit her with the photos, hoping she could tell them more about the photos. What happened next change d Veal’s life.“Everything came back to her when she saw these pictures,” Veal said. “She recognized her sisters, her aunts, her grandparents… It was the first time I had ever seen someone’s excitement from an old photo returning to them.”The experience made Veal realize the power of old photographs to hold precious and long-forgotten memories and restore a sense of identity. It never left him. Two years ago, when he came across old family photos for sale at a thrift store (旧货店), he decided to pick one picture and try to track down the family. Soon, he was inspired to buy more photos and started a Facebook group called Old Photo Project to aid in finding their families.Veal is not alone in this hobby. Photo and genealogy (家谱学) enthusiasts worldwide regularly use the internet and even social media to track down the families and faces in the lost photos. David, 26, lives in New York and started his project, Museum of lost Memories, in late 2020. He has already had over 300,000 followers on Instagram and over 750,000 on TikTok. “Some of my posts have gone viral and a person or family was tracked down in a matter of minutes!” David said. The motivation behind this hobby seems to be a combination of enjoying the detective work it takes to solve the puzzle, and the memories these lost pictures can bring back to the families they belong to. “I feel like this is my calling,” said David. “The more I return memories, the more it feels like I’m supposed to be doing this.”1. Italy has recently been selling hundreds of old homes incredibly cheap, thanks to plans that have led to the rebuilding of local communities.Scottish businessman Cesidio Di Ciacca bought a whole village. He has just finished renewing Borgo I Ciacca, a rural village dating back to the 1500s and historically named after his family.“At the turn of the 20th century my grandparents left the village in search of a better future,” Di Ciacca said. “They moved to Scotland, leaving behind their home.” Inspired by nostalgia (怀旧) for his ancestors’ land, Di Ciacca decided to return to breathe new life into the village and rebuild the local economy.Di Ciacca needed to acquire the entire village to begin repair work. So the first step was to track down all 140 owners of the 30-hectare village property —a long and complicated process made more difficult by the fact that emigration (移民) had spread them across the world.“It all started off as a hobby. Then I realized I needed to make this dream of mine into a sustainable business,”said Di Ciacca. “When my daughter Sofia decided to leave her corporate job and take care of the vineyards, I turned the village into a rural farm producing honey, jams, wine, and extra virgin olive oil, and launching eco-conscious activities.”The 2, 500-square-meter village now hosts a small cultural center and conference room for meetings. There’s also a canteen with wine-tasting spots and a kitchen for cooking lessons. Bucolic marathons are held in spring, with people running up and down the vineyards and then relaxing at the little square where villagers once met to chat in the evenings after working in the fields.“I want this village to be an important center for all Italian-Scottish people abroad who want to return and reconnect with their origins, and maybe even help their native country by launching activities and opportunities for growth,” Di Ciacca said.1. What drove Di Ciacca to rebuild the village of Borgo I Ciacca?A.The potential for profit.B.His grandparents’ wishes.C.Curiosity about local lands.D.Love for his ancestors’ origins.2. Why was it hard to find the village’s original owners?A.They had moved to different places.B.Many had passed away years ago.C.They were unwilling to sell their shares.D.They had refused to return to the village.3. What activities can people do in Borgo I Ciacca now?A.Barbecue in the fields. B.Host agricultural meetings.C.Feed animals on the farm. D.Pick grapes in the vineyards.4. What can be inferred from Di Ciacca’s words in the last paragraph?A.He needs fund for further repair work.B.He thinks the village is a profitable cause.C.He wants to help others of Italian origins.D.He plans to make his village a famous resort.4. As simple as it sounds, smiling can be the first step toward cheering yourself up. Re-search shows not only that you can bring joy to others even if you’re unhappy, but also that doing so is a reliable way to improve your own health and happiness, too. The key is to act like a happy person even if you don’t fe el like it.Last year, researchers at the University of California asked people to behave either outwardly or inwardly for one week. Those who purposely acted outwardly saw a significant in-crease in health and happiness. Similarly, paying for someone else and volunteering have been shown to raise one’s own happiness levels. One reasonable explanation is that positive behaviors lead to cognitive change. Try to tell yourself, “I feel unhappy, but I am acting happy!” That makes you feel happier. Psychologist Richard calls this the “As If Principle”: If you want to feel a certain way,act as if you have already done, and your brain will give you that feeling,at least for a while. The famous painter Rockwell was in formal treatment most of his adult life. But his happy paintings were clearly part of his treatment. He was painting his hope.So you can learn from Rockwell to bring joy to yourself and the people around you when you are down. First, ask what happy people will do to make terrible things better for them-selves and others, Next, make a plan to follow through on everything you’ve just imagined.Write three ideas for extra-kind greetings in a notebook and remind yourself in daily life. Listen to the sound of a happy person and use it as a model. By preparing yourself to cheer up your friends around you the way a happy person will, you’ll create the conditions through which you can produce your own happiness naturally and give the gift of happiness to others as well.1. How can we be happier according to paragraph 2?A.By saving much money.B.By cheating ourselves.C.By keeping our secrets.D.By assisting others.2. Why is Rockwell mentioned in paragraph 3?A.To list the application of “As If Principle”.B.To introduce some polite behaviors.C.To introduce his paintings.D.To show his artistic gift.3. What does the author suggest doing when you feel unhappy?A.Listening to blue music.B.Asking friends for gifts.C.Learning from happy people.D.Writing the sad things in a notebook.4. What is the main idea of the text?A.The secret to health.B.The reason for happiness.C.Keep smiling, even if you fail.D.Act happy, even when you’re not.5. If you use “123456”, “password’’ or “qwerty” as a password, you’re probably aware that you’reat the risk of being attacked by hackers (黑客). But you’re not alone. 1 Recently, password management service NordPass has carried out a study to determine the 200 most commonly used passwords around the world. They analysed the data across 50 countries. The findings show password choices are often attached to cultural references. 2 In the UK, “liverpool” was the third most popular password, with 224,160 hits, while the name of Chilean football club “colocolo” was used by 15,748 people in Chile, making it the fifth most common choice.3 Women tend to use more positive and affectionate (深情的) words and phrases such as “sunshine” or “I loveyou”, while men often use sports-related passwords. In some countries, men use more swear words than women.Choosing long and complex passwords remains the main authentication mechanism (身份验证机制) for computers and network-based products and services. But we know people continue to choose weak passwords and often don’t manage them securely. 4To overcome the security issues linked with password-based authentication systems, researchers and developers are now concentrating on creating authentication systems which don’t depend on passwords at all. 5 For example, two-factor authentication (2FA) and multi-factor authentication (MFA) methods are good ways to secure your accounts. These methods combine a password with biometric information (for example, a face scan or fingerprint) or something distinguishable, like acaptcha (验证码). All in all, a secure password is the first line of defense against cyber attacks. Don’t give up security for convenience.6. He was most captivated (迷住) by the people he met in rural Kenya—particularly at the Amboseli Primary and Secondary School in Amboseli National Park.In addition to befriending many of the students and teachers, Austin was surprised to learn how difficult it was to get books and school supplies for the children. “In rural Kenya, the government does not build school buildings. You either build it yourself or raise money to have it built,” says Austin. “A teacher was asked if they had a library. She replied, ‘ No, but we would love to have a library.’ That stuck in my mind.”When Austin eventually returned to his home in Bluffton, South Carolina, he launched Libraries for Kids International. Since starting the charity, Austin has managed to ship more than 1000 books to 11 schools across Kenya and Tanzania. He sends the books through the post office rather than FedEx to keep the shipping costs down.As it continues to collect books and donations for additional shipments, Austin says that the charity is now helping to move a shipping container of 22, 000 books from Atlanta to Kenya. In the future, the philanthropist (慈善家) hopes to start sending donations to South America as well.“Many people told me that it can’t be done. It’s too expensive to ship books, and they will disappear going through customs,” Austin says. “However, every worthwhile project will have problems and barriers. If you focus on the problems, you will never start. On the contrary, if you focus on the aim and solve the problems as they arise, most anything is possible.”29.What problem does Austin find in rural Kenya?A.Education depends on charity.B.Students lack education resources.C.Books get lost going through customs.D.Families can’t afford the kids’ schooling.30.What does Austin do for the people in rural Kenya?A.He teaches at school.B.He funds a library for them.C.He reduces the shipping costs.D.He ships books to schools.31.What can we learn from Austin’s story?A.It is the first step that costs.B.Success belongs to the persevering.C.Every bit of effort makes a big difference.D.Nothing is difficult to a determined mind.32.Which of the following best describes Austin?A.A crazy adventurer.B.A devoted educator.C.A charity enthusiast.D.A passionate volunteer.Under normal circumstances, falling asleep during a paid tour is a waste of money or an offense to your guide at worst. But that’s not the case with this new experience coming out of Hong Kong. As its name suggests, the Sleeping Bus Tour is designed to help passengers catch some sleep, and rides are already selling out.A 2022 survey by the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Center of Communication and Public Opinion notes almost 70% respondents experiences some form of sleep disorder. Hong Kongers have much stress from work and need a space for sleeping, but their living spaces are too small. Some may not live alone and have to share apartments with their family, which may not be a good environment for a proper rest. After noticing passengers falling asleep on their buses, the Hong Kong tour company, Ulu Travel Agency, recently launched such an innovative way for adults to sleep: the Sleeping Bus Tour. The five-hour bus ride takes passengers on an 83-kilometer(about 51.5 miles)journey aboard a regular double decker bus. Not only is the Sleeping Bus Tour the first of its kind, it’s also the longest bus route in Hong Kong, ensuring that tired passengers have plenty of time to enjoy some sleep.Once passengers board the bus, they are treated with a goodie bag complete with an eye mask and earplugs to help them sleep and they are allowed to bring their own blankets and slippers. The long ride includes a few stops for scenic spots and bathroom breaks. Passengers can also get off the bus early at one of several drop-off points if they’d prefer to continue theirsleep at home rather than complete the entire journey. Tickets for the Sleeping Bus Tour are divided in four categories from the “Zero-decibel(分贝)Sleeping Cabin“ to the ”VIP Cabin.” Prices range from about $17 USD to S115 USD per person. For more information on this unique experience, head to the Ulu travel company website.33.What does the survey show?A.Hongkongers desire to live alone.B.Hongkongers can afford paid tours.C.Hongkongers are under extreme stress.D.Most Hongkongers have troublesleeping.34.Why was the Sleeping Bus Tour launched?A.To improve the sleeping habits.B.To make more profits.C.To reduce the stress from extra work.D.To help adult passengers rest properly. 35.What can a passenger get from the Sleeping Bus Tour?A.A ride in a high-tech bus.B.A guided sight-seeing tour.C.A bag with sleep aid products.D.A blanket and a pair of slippers. 36.What is the purpose of the text?A.To introduce a bus tour.B.To inform readers of a new survey.C.To advertise a travel company.D.To raise concerns over sleep problems.Young children are significantly more likely than adults to have their opinions influenced by robots, according to a new research. The study, conducted at the University of Plymouth, compared how adults and children respond to an identical task when in the presence of both their peers (同龄人) and robots. It showed that while adults regularly have their opinions influenced by peers, something also demonstrated in previous studies, they are largely able to resist(抵制) being persuaded by robots. However, children aged between seven and nine were more likely to give the same responses as the robots, even if they were obviously incorrect. The study asks people to look at a screen showing four lines and say which two match in length. When alone, people almost never make a mistake but when doing the experiment with others, they tend to follow what others are saying. When children were alone in the room in this research, they scored 87% on the test, but when the robots join in their score drops to 75%. And of the wrong answers, 74% matched those of the robot.Professor Belpaeme said, “People often follow the opinions of others and we’ve known for a long time that it is hard to resist taking over views and opinions of people around us. But as robots will soon be found in the home and the workplace, we were wondering if people would follow robots.”“What our results show is that adults do not follow what the robots are saying. However, if you fail to plan before starting one on your own, you may end up with a fewSun ConditionsPlants need an ample amount of sunlight for them to grow properly. 42 Before starting an indoor garden, make sure you’ve conducted a few weeks’ worth of observations about how sunlight behaves inside your home at different times of the day. This will give you an idea as to where your indoor garden is.Space AvailabilityObviously, the sun conditions would be useless if you don’t have enough space for the garden. That said, consider where the sunlight lands. You must also determine whether you can place a garden there. 43 Do it in such a way that you get to accommodate (考虑到) your plants ‘sunlight needs while also maximizing the space of your home for other things.BudgetYou will spend a few dollars if you want to start an indoor garden. That’s a fact. This shouldn’t bother you, though. 44 The money you spent on gardening essentials will return in the form of not having to buy certain things in the market because you have one at home. Before starting an indoor garden, consider the budget you want for the garden. This will determine the containers and types of plants you can cultivate. The world will always present us with many problems that can affect us physically, mentally, and emotionally. One great method for achieving a healthy lifestyle is by growing a garden. 45 Thanks to indoor gardening, you can have a slice of paradise in the city.A.If not, you can try rearranging your home.B.To avoid that, you need to consider a few things.C.That means you should consider the availability of sunlight.D.Without enough sunlight, all living things wouldn’t survive.E.Besides, you must consider how to shelter your garden in the sun.F.That’s because, in the long run, indoor gardens are actually money-savers.G.Living in the city is not a problem for people with green fingers anymore.四、完形填空My daughter had talent for acting. The impression of The Full Monty
It is the big problem not only for Chinese worker to be laid off, what should we do after we lost our job? British people give us a lesson by their humor. One day, the steel worker who was be laid off just now and Dave met a person who wanted to commit suicide. And the two people saved him immediately. After that they began to struggle for their life. Finally, they came up with a crazy idea.
They found a man who worked at the ballroom as a actor. As a result, the first local strip group was set up by men. Then the black person and a guy was coming to join the group. The first performance had achieved successfully. Although the police investigated their performance, more and more people paid attention to them. And many people out of curiosity to watch the performance. After they got the understanding of the family , the group began their ultimate performance.
The British humor is a strong feeling of culture and majority is self-mockery. It seems to be lovely and funny. And the little things made them miserable , so they wanted to draw out the drama. It is not only express the sarcasm and protest to the government and society in reality but also make their relax and happy. The film is a microcosm of life. They have their special stress and annoyance. They be educated to have responsibility to everything so they need to clean their sadness and stress. Like the five men in the film, one indulges himself in the white lies, one is unable to be responsible for raise the children, one lives in loneliness, one losts himself in his marriage , one lives in his own world and one can not do anything. They need to release themselves. And they want to show their value to the society.。
