Declarative: a sentence which makes an assertion or statement
Imperative:
a sentence which expresses a command or request
Interrogative: a sentence which asks a question?
Compound Sentences: are made up of two or more independent clauses (i.e. a clause is a part of a sentence and has its own verb . Example: there are two clauses in the complex sentence ‘We choose what we want’) which are related to each other and are joined by a linking conjunction (and, but, or, however, therefore, so .. etc) Longer Example: ‘At the accident scene the traffic inspector noted the length of the skid marks, and could see that in fact the driver of the motor vehicle had not been travelling at a high speed’. Complex Sentence: has one main/principal clause, and one or more dependant or subordinate clauses, with in most cases the major idea contained in the main clause, and ideas of lesser importance in the subordinate clauses (Example:. ‘While the little girl cried bitterly, we searched high and low for her lost puppy, but despite our best efforts, it was never found!’ Compound-Complex Sentences: now we are getting really technical(!). Put simply it means we have at least two main clauses and at least one dependent clause mixed up together and are to be found in really long sentences where main clauses are being modified (described/clarified further) by the dependent clauses.
