Your next step will be to organize what you are going to say about it in your report. Writing the basic elements down in an outline format will help you to organize your thoughts.What will you include in the outline? Follow whatever instructions your teacher has given you. If you are on your own, however, the following guidelines should help.Let's assume for the moment that you've chosen a work of fiction. We'll start with a description of the book. The description should include such elements as:1.The setting—where does the story take place? Is it a real place or animaginary one? If the author does not tell you exactly where the storyis set, what can you tell about it from the way it is described?2.The time period—is the story set in the present day or in an earlier timeperiod? Perhaps it is even set in the future! Let your reader know.3.The main character(s)—who is the story mostly about? Give a briefdescription. And therefore do we really need this kind of a dream? Gatsby’s life is actually going on in the past, though he lives in the present because everything he does is done to change it. Fitzgerald reveals to the reader that happiness is not a thing, which you can buy with money or handpick with power. His fulfillment of the requirements oh the “Dream” has come to such a point that between the lines the reader sees how desperate he is. So what is the American Dream that is criticized in the definition of Scott Fitzgerald? It is successful life and work through which people obtain the material acknowledgement of their success and become happy when they do. The problem is that having the person you “love” also start being a “material acknowledgement”, too.The essence of the book is that when the moral principles are low, people choose any means for achieving success and people are interested only in the result. The real understanding of the “American dream” is lost by the characters in this book and by this Fitzerald shows that there is no need for a dream like this. It is a dream with the same name, but with a different content. Having money is not a guarantee of true happiness. "Her voice is full of money [Fitzerald 102]," says Gatsby, “I can buy her,” means Fitzgerald. We want to conclude using the scene when Daisy does confess that she was the one driving the car and by this she signs Gatsby’s death penalty. She uses Gatsby and he is ready to put her guilt over his shoulders. This little scene shows how much is love and devotion valued and how responsible can these “American dream seekers” be.Conclusion:Success “against all odds” may not bring happiness but in the contrary it may bring even a greater pain and disappointment. What Fitzgerald believes is that the American dream has been corrupted by materialism, by the effort to substitute the true meaning of the dream with its fake understanding of people who lack morality. We support Scott Fitzgerald in his opinion. This dream will be not achievable as long as people do not stop garbling it. The book report of Emma written by Jane Austen
Emma is a novel written by jane austen, which is the one of the most prominent English novelists in the twentieth century. In retrospect, jane austen experienced a bitter love story and she was unmarried throughout lifetime. But in spite of her own staggering experience, she always gave the characters happy endings. She was specialized in satirizing contemporary social prejudice of women, which is powerless, obedient and should only be an appendant of man. So the heroins in her books are either recalcitrant or powerful, showing no fear of challenge socalled common views.
Emma woodhouse, unlike jane austen’s other heroin who cames from families bellow middle class, was an upper class of large possession. She was astute, humorous and a little bit spoiled by her father. Aftering matching her tutor and a man by accident, she considered herself very talented in matchmaking and began matchmaking for Harriet Smith based on her own wishful thinking. She suggested Harriet turning down the proposal from mr.martin, a poor farmer and at the same time, tried to bring harriet and mr.elton, a clergy, together. while mr.elton was proving obtaining much higher opinion of himself. He refused harriet by showing his love towards emma. However,george knightly, emma’s friend,criticized emma that she should not interfere other’s marriage based on vanity and prejudice. They had a fight then. Later, harriet told emma she fell in love with mr. knightly, which confused emma by making her so struggling. Finally, emma woke up in jealous that she loved mr.knight all the time.
I enjoy the beautiful scenery of England countryside and the hospitality of local people in the book. However, I am more impressed by emma, the main character. Although she is arrogant somehow, I like her buoyant and determined disposition. And she is so different from women at that time. When she asked harriet to refuse mr.martin, she provided people at that time an idea that it is not only a man could choose wife, but a woman could choose her happiness, too. Emma, compared with Elizabeth, another heroin from pride and prejudice, was much more powerful and rich. As a rich lady, it seems very reasonable for her to decline a clergy. by contrast, the public considered Elizabet h’s refusal to a clergy is too arrogant and it is even a subversion of common views. Thus, jane austen showed us her dissatisfaction to feudalism by making contrast. It also makes me think about recent situation. Nowadays, people bring too much material consideration into choosing mates. Love, somehow, become a less important factor. Love or bread, different people has different choices. But, when it comes to me, without love, bread will be no longer tasteful and will only become as dry as sawdust.。
