Installing iPhone 4 Home ButtonUse this guide to replace a damaged home button to regain use of your iPhone.Step 1 - Rear PanelBefore disassembling your iPhone, be sureit is powered off.Remove the two 3.6 mm Phillips screws next to thedock connector.Apple has recently substituted the twoPhillips screws with 5-Point "Pentalobe"screws. If your iPhone 4 has 5-Point "Pentalobe" screws instead of Phillips,please refer to the second picture.Remove the two 3.6 mm Pentalobe screws next to thedock connector.During reassembly, we recommend youreplace the 5-point screws with equivalentPhillips screws. Our Liberation Kit providesthe tools and screws needed to replace the Pentalobe screws with Phillips screws.The 5-Point Screwdriver should only beused once, as it has the potential to strip thescrews.Step 2Push the rear panel toward the top edge of the iPhone.The panel will move about 2 mm.Lift the rear panel away from the iPhone.Step 4 - BatteryRemove the single 2.5 mm Phillips screw securing thebattery connector to the logic board.Use an iPod opening tool to carefully pry the battery connector up from the ends closest to the top andbottom edges of the iPhone.Do not pry against the pressure contact.Remove the pressure contact from the iPhone.Step 6Use the clear plastic pull tab to gently lift the battery outof the iPhone.Be careful when removing the battery with the plastic pull tab. On some units, Apple uses an excessive amount of glue, making it virtually impossible to remove the battery in this fashion (with the tab possibly tearingdue to excessive force).For batteries that "stick", you could use the iPodopening tool to assist (take extra care whilst doing so).Remove the battery.Before reconnecting the battery connector,be sure the pressure contact (shown in red)is properly positioned next to the batteryconnector.Before reassembly, be sure to clean allmetal-to-metal contact points on thepressure contact as well as its contact pointon the rear panel with a de-greaser such aswindex. The oils on your fingers have thepotential to cause wireless interferenceissues.Step 7 - Logic BoardUse a SIM card eject tool or a paperclip to eject theSIM card and its holder.This may require a significant amount offorce.Remove the SIM card and its holder.Step 8Remove the following two screws:One 1.2 mm PhillipsOne 1.6 mm PhillipsRemove the thin steel dock connector cable cover fromthe iPhone.Before reassembly, be sure to clean allmetal-to-metal contact points on the dockconnector cable cover with a de-greasersuch as windex. The oils on your fingershave the potential to cause wirelessinterference issues.Use an iPod opening tool to gently pry the dock cable connector up off the logic board from both short ends ofthe connector.Step 10Carefully peel the dock ribbon cable off the logic board and the lower speaker enclosure.Use an iPod opening tool to pry the lower antennaconnector up off its socket on the logic board.Step 12Remove the 1.9 mm Phillips screw securing the bottomof the logic board to the inner case.Step 13Remove the following five screws securing theconnector cover to to the logic board:One 2.3 mm PhillipsTwo 1.6 mm PhillipsOne 1.4 mm PhillipsOne 4.8 mm PhillipsWhen re-assembling, start off with replacingthe 4.8 mm Philips screw first, then the 2.3mm. This is to ensure there is no mix-up,and avoid rendering the LCD and digitizeruseless.Use an iPod opening tool to slightly lift the top edge ofthe connector cover away from the logic board.Use the tip of a spudger to pull the connector coverretaining clips away from the inner frame.Remove the connector cover from the iPhone.Before reassembly, be sure to clean allmetal-to-metal contact points on theconnector cover with a de-greaser such as Windex. The oils on your fingers have thepotential to cause wireless interferenceissues. Do not clean the connectorsthemselves with Windex.Step 15Use an iPod opening tool to carefully lift the rearcamera connector up off its socket on the logic board. Remove the rear camera.Remove the small circular white sticker (warranty sticker and water indicator) covering the screw near thebattery pull tab.Remove the 2.4 mm Phillips screw that was hiddenunderneath the sticker.Step 17Disconnect the following connectors from the top of thelogic board:Digitizer cableLCD cableHeadphone jack/volume button cableTop Microphone/sleep button cableFront camera cableIt is helpful to use the edge of an iPodopening tool to gently lift the connectors upand out of their sockets on the logic board.Use a small flathead screwdriver to remove the 4.8 mmstandoff near the headphone jack.Step 19Carefully remove the logic board from the iPhone,minding any cables that may get caught.Step 20 - Speaker Enclosure AssemblyRemove the single 2.4 mm Phillips screw securing thespeaker enclosure to the side of the inner frame.Remove the speaker enclosure from the iPhone. Before re-fastening the speaker enclosureto the inner frame, be sure the four smallEMI fingers rest below the lip of the LCDframe.Before reassembly, be sure to clean allmetal-to-metal contact points between theEMI fingers and the internal frame as wellas the brass screw mounting point with a de-greaser such as Windex. The oils on yourfingers have the potential to cause wireless interference issues.Step 22 - Display AssemblyRemove the following two screws securing the vibratorto the inner frame:One 6 mm PhillipsOne 1.4 mm PhillipsRemove the vibrator from the iPhone.Remove the 1.5 mm Phillips screw securing the frontpanel near the headphone jack.Step 24Remove the three large-headed 1.5 mm Phillips screwsalong the volume button side of the iPhone.Keep track of the washers under each of thescrews.Tip: It can be tricky, but it is also possible tojust loosen the large-headed 1.5 mm Phillipsscrews slightly, without having to removeand replace the screw-and-washer set.Step 25Remove the 1.5 mm Phillips screw near the lowermicrophone.Remove the 1.5 mm Phillips screw near the dockconnector ribbon cable.Step 27Remove the three large-headed 1.5 mm Phillips screwsalong the SIM card side of the iPhone.Keep track of the washers under each of thescrews.Tip: It can be tricky, but it is also possible tojust loosen the large-headed 1.5 mm Phillipsscrews slightly, without having to removeand replace the screw-and-washer set.Remove the small-headed 1.5 mm Phillips screw nearthe sleep button.Carefully insert the edge of an iPod opening tool between the rubber bezel around the front glass paneland the steel inner frame.Do not attempt to insert the tool between theglass and the rubber bezel.Carefully pry the upper edge of the front panelassembly away from the steel inner frame.Step 29Slowly and gently lift the top edge of the front panelassembly away from the steel inner frame.Continue to rotate the front panel assembly away from the steel inner frame until it slowly begins to peel off theadhesive applied below the home button area. Carefully pull the lower edge of the front panel assembly away from the steel inner frame.De-route the digitizer and LCD cables through the steelinner frame.Before re-fastening the front panel to thesteel inner frame, be sure both the LCD anddigitizer cables are not folded or pinchedbetween the inner frame and the front panel assembly. This will result in possiblydamaging the cables and not having enoughslack when reconnecting the them to thelogic board.When the front panel has been correctlyinstalled, both the LCD and digitizer cablesshould be immediately next to one another,and the connectors should be just hangingover the steel frame.When replacing the front panel assemblyyou must remember that you might have toreuse the earpiece grille and the clearplastic ring around the front facing camerafrom the old/damaged assembly. This willdepend on where you buy the replacementpart.Step 31 - Home ButtonUse the edge of an iPod opening tool or your fingernailto lift the home button ribbon cable retainer.Be sure you are prying up on the cableretainer, not the socket itself.Step 32Use a pair of tweezers to pull the home button ribboncable out of its socket.Do not excessively strain the home buttonribbon cable, as it is very thin and delicate.Installing iPhone 4 Home ButtonStep 33De-route the home button ribbon cable through theinner case and remove the home button from theiPhone.To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.This document was last generated on Apr 21, 2011.Installing iPhone 4 Home Button。
