AN22 - 1High Frequency DC-DC Conversion using High Current Bipolar TransistorsNeil Chadderton Dino RosaldiIntroductionDC-DC conversion is o ne o f the fundamental circuit functions within the electronics industry and addresses a wi de f iel d of market secto rs,applications and supply requirements. A general trend, (to pursue cost, size and reliability advantages) has been to reduce the size of the DC-DC converter systems, and as the inductive elements of such a system are quite often the bulkiest components, increases in switching frequency provide one met ho d to al lo w this. Switch ing frequencies therefore have increased from tens of kHz to hundreds of kHz,which has forced a revision of the enabling switching devices.It is an often assumed maxim that bipolar transistors are useful for DC-DC conversion functions up to perhaps 50kHz, and for service beyond this frequency, that MOSFETs provide the only solution. The purpose of this application note is to demonstrate that bipolar transistors possessing superior geometrys - thereby providing a higher current capability per die area, can and are o p era te d to re aso n ab ly h igh switching frequencies with minimal loss. This often allows a more compactdesign (due to the higher silicon efficiency of bipolar technology) and lower cost.BackgroundTo obtain the most efficient performance fro m b ipo la r trans is to rs at h igh switching frequencies, an appreciation of the basic switching mechanisms and base charge analysis is useful. Appendix A provides an introduction to bipolar transistor switching behaviour, and appendix B provides references for mathematical treatments.Th ere are various methods for increasing the maximum switching speed of bipolar transistors. Some of these rely on preventing saturation of the device, thus vastly reducing the stored charge, while other methods remove the charge at turn-off. Figures 1,2 and 5 show a number of common speed-up networks. Figures 1a through 1d show various options for preventing saturation, and effectively reduce/limit base drive when the collector terminal has fallen to a specific level. (Figure 1a is often termed a Schottky transistor, and is often used for IC transistors, and400kHz Operation with Optimised Geometry DevicesFigures 1c and 1d are variants of the so called Baker clamp circuit).These methods (the Baker clamp being preferred for high power applications) of course do not allow the transistor’s collector-emitter voltage to saturate to a very low level, and so the resultant on-state loss may be high and therefore prohibit the use of smaller packaged, though adequately current capable devices. Figures 2 and 5 show two methods that allow true saturation by permitting sufficient forward base drive, while removing charge quickly at turn-off. Design of such networks is non-critical, and by suitable choice of components allow high levels of base overdrive with no penalty to turn-off time duration.Figure 2 shows a method of speeding up PNP devices to enable replacement of large P-Channel MOSFETs - this particular circuit being designed for fast charging of battery packs by Benchmarq Microelectronics. Figures 3 and 4 show the relevant waveforms, for a standard passive turn-off method (base-emitter pull-up resistor) and the speed-up circuit of Figure 2 - the combined storage and fall times being reduced from 1.2µs to 80ns. Importantly, the major switching loss contributor - the fall time, has been significantly reduced to 40ns, which is comparable to, or better than P-Channel MOSFET performance. Figure 6 is for a small signal device, while Figure 7 is for the ZTX1048A - a transistor utilising the Zetex Matrix geometry, and a Super-βemitter process to produce a 4A DC rated part in the TO92 style E-Line package.Figure 8 summarises a set of suchmeasurements for the ZTX1048A - for example, at a collector current of 1A and a forced gain of 200, a turn-off charge of 900pC is required to neutralise stored charge and eliminate storage time effects.[Note 1: Appendix A also includes some ancillary material on the minimum amount of trigger charge necessary for pulse circuits].Power Conversion CircuitsTo demonstrate the performance advantages possible when the bipolar transistor’s turn-off charge is addressed,th is se ction co nsiders such modifications to a basic step-down DC-DC converter. The circuit shown in Figure 9 was used to provide a means of evaluation, and is of fairly standard implementation, apart from the choice of the FMMT718 SuperSOT SOT23 PNP transistor. This circuit, with minimal design optimisation, can produce the eff ici en cy a ga in s t load curren t characteristic shown in Figure 10. This c ha rt als o s ho w s h o w the bias conditions for the pass device can be mod if ied to increase the curren t capability of the circuit, albeit with some compromise to conversion efficiency at lower load currents. Curves 1, 2 and 3illustrate this effect for base currents of 9.4mA, 43mA and 170mA respectively.Figure 11 shows how the efficiency varies with input voltage for the I B =43mA option. To ensure optimum performance, defrost differential pressure regulating valves must be selected and applied correctly. These subjects are covered thoroughly in Bulletin 90-50 and should be reviewed prior to instal-lation. Proper installation procedures are equally important and are covered in the following paragraphs.VAL VE LOCATION - The (O)LDR , XTM and XTO valves are installed in the liquid line between the receiver and the liquid header. The DDR-20is installed in the discharge line before the condenser. Figure 1 is a piping schematic only to illustrate the general location of the (O)LDR, XTM, XTO and DDR-20 valves in the system. The two types of defrost differential valves (liquid line and discharge line) are not to be applied on the same system.Sporlan recommends that recognized piping references be consulted for assistance in piping procedures. Sporlan is not responsible for system design,any damage arising from faulty system design, or for misapplication of its products. If these valves are applied in any manner other than as described in this bulletin or other Sporlan literature, the Sporlan warranty is void.The Defrost Differential Pressure Regulating Valves can be installed in either horizontal or vertical lines; choose the line that best suits the applica-tion and permits easy accessibility of the valves. Consideration should be given in valve location so that valves do not act as oil traps or allow solder to flow into the internal parts during brazing. Care should also be taken to install the valves with the refrigerant flow in the proper direction.IMPORTANT :There are two pilot lines from the DDR-20that must be installed in the field in order for the valve to operate properly. The 1/4" SAE fitting on the pilot differential valve must be connected to the receiver. The second 1/4" SAE fitting, located below the solenoid coil (Fitting C), must be connected to the suction line. The pilot line to suction is not a constant high to low side bleed. It only bleeds the small amount of refrigerant from the top of the valve's main piston to open the valve when the solenoid coil is ener-gized. Once the valve is open, and at all other times, there is no high to low side bleed. Alwaysdirect the flame away from the valve body to avoiddamaging the paint.TEST PRESSURES and DEHYDRATION TEMPERA-TURES– Excessive leak testing or operating pres-sures may damage these valves and reduce the life ofthe operating members. The maximum allowable testpressure is 400 psig. If greater pressure is to be used,some method must be used to isolate the valve fromthese high pressures.For better leak detection, an inert dry gas such asnitrogen or CO2may be added to an idle system tosupplement the refrigerant pressure.CAUTION:Inert gases must be added to the system carefully through a pressure regulator.Unregulated gas pressure can seriously damage the system and endanger human life.Never use oxygen or explosive gases.VAL VE SETTING and ADJUSTMENT – (O)LDR,XTM, XTO AND DDR-20:All defrost differential valves are set by turning the adjusting stem located under the cap on the pilot differential valve. The adjustment range is 5 to 50 psig. The (O)LDR, XTM and XTO have a factory setting of 18 psid and the DDR-20 has a factory setting of 30 psid. Turning the stem clock-wise increases the setting, counterclockwise decreases the setting. Adjustments must be made with the valve in its differential mode and no refrig-erated cases in defrost,so that the head pressure is normal. Artificially low head pressure at the initia-tion of defrost can prevent a differential from occur-ring thereby making it impossible to set the valve. Therefore, always set the defrost differential pressure regulating valve when no cases are in defrost. Once the valve is set it will control to maintain this differential setting during defrost. However, there are several system conditions that can cause the differ-ential to change beyond the valve’s control:1. When a defrost is initiated, the head pressurewill fall. It can take several minutes for thedifferential to be created.2. If there is a very low requirement for refriger-ation, and therefore a low demand for liquidrefrigerant (i.e. if evaporators condense moreliquid than can be used by other systems orbranches not in defrost), the differential maynever build up enough to reach the valvesetting.3. As a gas defrost cycle progresses, condensingoccurs in the evaporators in defrost at a slowerrate. Therefore, there is more gas present in theevaporators, which results in a higher naturalpressure drop.IMPORTANT– To verify valve operation, if no differ-ential is occurring between the liquid header and the receiver during defrost, first take all systems or branches out of defrost. Then put the valve in its differential mode and check the valve setting. If the valve maintains set-point with normal head pres-sures and no cases in defrost, then the valve is oper-ating correctly and some other system condition (such as outlined above) may be causing the problem.The (O)LDR, XTM, XTO and DDR-20 can be easily disassembled for inspection and cleaning or for replacement of parts. Be certain to isolate the valve from all sources of pressure prior to disassembling. Exploded views of the valves are provided on Pages 5 and 6 for your reference.(O)LDR,XTM AND XTOPilot Differential Valve Replacement Instructions1.Disconnect the pilot tube from the pilot differ-ential valve. Remove the pilot differential valvefrom the flange.2.Inspect and clean the strainer if necessary.Replace strainer and install a new pilot differ-ential valve in the flange. Reconnect the pilottube from the valve body.Internal Parts Replacement1.Disconnect the pilot tube(s) from the pilotvalve.2.Remove the enclosing tube locknut and the capscrews and replace the enclosing tube,enclosing tube gasket, plunger assembly,closing spring, piston assembly, O-Ring (ifrequired), and the tetraseal or gasket. Graphical representations are an obvious means to describe di erent aspects of systems. Modeling distributed and concurrent systems graphs are often used to describe the topological structure of the system. The graphical structure shows then which parts are involved and what are the ways of communication. Graph transformations can be used conveniently to model dynamic changes of the system structure. For example, the distribution of some local parts is rearranged or communication channels are created or deleted. Local states are typically coded in some speci cation or programming text or not considered. This idea is followed, for example, in (DM87), by -grammars in (KLG91), in (Sch92) and by actor graph grammars in (JR91; Kor94). Graphs can be used also to model complex object relations inside of local parts of a system as they arise, for example, in software process modeling (like project ow graphs in (KH95) or development graphs in (PW94)). Graph transformations are useful then on these lower levels to specify changes of object relations. Existing graph transformation models for distributed systems mostly concentrate on the topological aspects of a distributed system, e.g. (DM87; JR91; KLG91). In contrast, the algebraic approach to distributed graph transformation (EBHL88; EL93) describes mostly local actions by graph transformation related to others by interface graphs. The operations \split" and \join" switching between global and local states of a system are introduced to change network structures. The categorical approach (Sch93) uses graph transformation on the network level and the local level. Distributed graph transformation as presented in this article combines structured graph transformation on two levels introduced in the categorical approach with the synchronization possibilities via interface graphs of the algebraic approach. 1 Introduction
The generalization of graph transformations, namely high-level replacement (HLR) systems can successfully be employed in other areas, as Petri nets, to obtain results that are relevant for software engineering. In this paper we apply an extension of high-level replacement systems to Petri nets in order to achieve an integration of transformations, and hence all its advantages, with the preservation of (safety) properties. In contrast to the graph transformation approach, where rules and transformations describe dynamic behavior, in the area of Petri nets we use rules and transformations to represent stepwise modi cation of nets. This is considered to be a vertical structuring technique in software engineering and is known as rule-based modi cation. But note, rule-based modi cation does not allow preserving system properties, and thus cannot be considered a re nement technique. The combination of transformations with the preservation of safety properties is very relevant in software engineering as the veri cation of large and complex systems is often necessary, but very complicated (if possible at all) and thus expensive. Thus, it is desirable to state and prove (safety) properties at an early state. The idea of developing a system while preserving safety properties is illustrated in section 2, in which we introduce a small example. We give a place/transition net that models a very simple elevator and satis es safety properties concerning the opening and closing of the doors to the elevator shaft. Then we stepwise introduce exclusive requests for opening the doors using rules and transformations that preserve safety properties. Thus we gain a model of the elevator with request, that satis es the safety properties concerning the doors without proving these properties again for this new model. High-level replacement systems have been introduced in EHKP91] as a categorical generalization of the double pushout approach to graph transformations, there the rst application to place/transition nets has been given as well. The application of high-level replacement systems to a special domain as place/transition nets, algebraic speci cation etc. requires a suitable category and the satisfaction of the HLR-conditions. In the case of place/transition nets with an initial marking this follows as a direct consequence of the results presented in RP94]. In Pad96] high-level replacement systems have been extended in order to allow di erent kinds of morphisms within the transformation step. This enables the expression of re nement using a morphism, called Q-morphism, directly from the left hand side of the rule to the right hand side. Based on this extension we can integrate net transformations with place preserving morphisms Peu97], that preserve safety properties in terms of speci c temporal logic formulas. The main result of this paper is the integration of the place preserving morphisms with the rules and transformations. This is achieved by proving three nontrivial conditions, called Q-conditions, see fact 4.6, fact 4.7 and fact 4.8. These proofs require detailed information about the involved categories, morphisms

and constructions, and are { due to space limitations { omitted in this paper. These technical result yield the important outcome for software engineering, stated in thm. 4.12 (Q-Transformations Preserve Safety Properties), that the concept of rules together with place preserving morphisms and transformations, allows the preservation of safety properties in the sense of MP92] given as a temporal logic formula. The paper is organize 2 illustrates the main ideas in terms of a small example. Then we review high-level replacement systems in section 3. Subsequently we give place/transition nets together with morphisms in section 4 and then we show that place/transition nets together with place preserving morphisms satisfy the Q-conditions, leading to the main theorem. As a conclusion we discuss future work in section 5.
