The function of the letter that Mr. Darcy wrote to Elizabeth after hisfailure of proposal[Abstract]: Under the influence of epistolary story, Letters are very important in the writing of Jane Austen’s Pride and prejudice. Among so many letters in the novel, the letter that Mr. Darcy wrote to Elizabeth after his proposal was rejected was a turning point of the plot of the whole story, showing the reader the real characteristics of the main character, promoting the sudden change of the romance between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, exciting the reader further more in the course of reading. [Keywords]: Pride and prejudice, letter, turning point1.IntroductionJane Austen was a famous English novelist whose works focused on women’s marriage and life. Her sensitivity to human emotion, her keen observation to life and her vivid language contribute to her success of writing. Pride and prejudice, one of her masterpieces, is a love story of a country gentleman’s daughter, Elizabeth Bennet, mirroring the reserved life of the Englishmen at the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the nineteenth century.Letter is the only way of communication apart from language communication. According to the existing literature, there are more than thirty letters in the novel [1], which play a significant role in the portrait of the characters, the development of plot and the transformation the point of view [2].The letter that Mr. Darcy wrote to Elizabeth after his failure of proposal is viewed as the most important letters in the novel. There is still little study about this letter, so this paper will explore the function of this letter in terms of portraying the characters and forwarding the plot to confirm the previous study by analyzing the letter in depth.2.Introduction the letterThe letter was given to Elizabeth by Mr. Darcy the following day of the failure his proposal. In the beginning of the letter, Mr. Darcy asked for Elizabeth’s pardon forthe bother brought by the letter. The letter consisted of two parts. The first part was Mr. Darcy’s explanation of his conduct of preventing the connection of Mr. Bingley and Jane, while the second part was Mr. Darcy’s description of the relationship between Mr. Wickham and Darcy’s family.3.The letter indirectly portrayed the characters.Actually, letter is the writing form of words [3], in which the character’s feature is implied. Mr. Darcy’s letter reflected that he was well-educated, arrogant, caring, kind-hearted, frank and intelligent.Well-educated Instead of coming straight to his point, he at first placated the potential alarm and unpleasure of Elizabeth, showing his gentility and courtesy. In the letter, he used formal language including relative clause, preposing structure [3]. E.g. I had, in defiance of various claims, in defiance of honour and humanity, ruined the immediate prosperity, and blasted the prospects of Mr. Wickham. -- Wilfully and wantonly to have thrown off the companion of my youth, the acknowledged favourite of my father, a young man who had scarcely any other dependence than on our patronage, and who had been brought up to expect its exertion…Arrogant From 1800 to 1830, a special type of men appeared in London. They dressed gracefully, behaved courteously, with a little blue facial expression; they were cold and poignant in their words; they had excellent temperament and intelligence; they made light of the bourgeoisie, considering them as ignorant and indelicate [2]. Mr. Darcy was one of them: he was well-born (which he was very proud of) and attached great importance to marrying a woman of his own class. What he could not bear most was the Bennet’s ungracious conduct, especially Elizabeth’s three younger sisters. In his eye, this kind of bourgeois family who were badly- educated, vulgar, passionate and direct (like animals) did not match his class at all. For him, etiquette was the standard of judging a person, even the standard of judging things and reason [2]. That was why he had tried his best to restraint his feeling towards Elizabeth.Caring As a friend of Mr. Bingley, he showed great concern over his love affair and marriage. He know Bingley very well, who he was tend to fall in love with awoman easily. When he found that this time Bingley was really in deep love with Jane and the neighbor were sure that the two would marry in the near future, Mr. Darcy decided to take action to protect Bingley from this kind of misfortunate connection because of Jane’s indifference and the Bennet’s ungraciousness. Then in London, he pointed out to his friend, “the certain evils of such a choice” and concealed from him Jane's being in town. He could not blame himself for having done this because he thought he was actually being a villain for the good of his friend. As the brother of Georgiana, he took good care of his much younger sister as a brother as well as a father, so he was annoyed when she was tempted to elope with the evil Mr. Wickham. He managed to stop the scandal from happening and prevented any public exposure for his sister's credit and feelings. When everything was over, he even did not want to remember this kind of offence to his dear sister.Kind-hearted Although Mr. Wickham was wild, vicious, greedy and unprincipled, even go against his own words, Mr. Darcy was still kind enough to satisfy Mr. Wickham’s will to exchange the reserved position of a clergyman with the freedom to study law and three thousand pounds.Frank Apparently, Mr. Darcy knew what he would present in the letter would more a less offend Elizabeth, he insisted on telling the truth. He co mplained of Jane’s indifference and “no participation of sentiment”, of the Benet’s misfeasance and rudeness, which were equal to speak ill of Elizabeth’s family in the face of her. At the same time he frankly acknowledged his great effort of refrained himself from falling in love with Elizabeth due to the situation of her family. He insisted his involvement in Mr. Bingley’s affair was nothing wrong and was also bold to confess only the conduct of concealing Jane’s being in town made him upset.Intelligent One the one hand, he was so observant that he could know black from white: he felt that this time Bingley’s love toward Jane was serious and sensed Jane’s disposition-though she was beautiful, well-behaved, cheerful, she looked indifferent to Bingley’s af fection, which at the very start annoyed Elizabeth but was actually the long-standing concern of Elizabeth over her sister. On the other hand, he was an expert in explaining. Knowing he was already misunderstood and disgusted byElizabeth, he did not speak in defense of himself directly. Instead, he told what he had done in the affair of Mr. Bingley and the story between his family and Mr. Wickham. Meanwhile, for Mr. Wickham, he pointed out that the truth of everything could withstand the testimony of Colonel Fitzwilliam, his near and intimate relative, one of the executors of his father's will, who was familiar with the truth of the matter.4.The letter forwarded the plot.Mr. Darcy’s arrogance and interference in Jane’s marriage disgusted Elizabeth very mu ch until Darcy’ proposal, however, they finally got married in the end of the story. How could that happened? The letter that Mr. Darcy wrote to Elizabeth after his failure of proposal played an important part in the forwarding of the plot [1]. Before Darc y’s proposal, Elizabeth disgusted him because he had pride in himself, looked down upon others, destroyed Mr. Wickham’s promising future, and most unbearably, he destroyed her dear sister, Jane’s happiness. Under these circumstances, Elizabeth was astonish ed by Mr. Darcy’s unexpected proposal. To her great surprise, he did not feel ashamed of what he had done to Jane and dared to criticize her family in that way. She could not help rereading the letter over and over again. At first, she refused to believe what he had said but she began to regain her rationality, considering there were some truths in his word about her badly-behaved family and she had jumped into the conclusion of Mr. Darcy’s disposition only out of Mr. Wickham’s a one-sided statement. However, the letter pushed her to reflect and explore herself. She gradually sprouted a kind of complicated emotion: compassion for Mr. Darcy’s on his dilemma-getting close to her or staying away her family, appreciation for his affection, respect for his kindness and so on. In the meanwhile, she grew shamed of her own blindness and prejudice and afraid to meet Mr. Darcy again. At the sight of Lady Catherine, she even had such idea that if she had accepted her proposal, then she would be her future niece. When visiting the Pemberley with Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner, she kept imaging how wonderful her life would be, if she were the mistress of the Pemberley. To sum up, the letter not only explained Jane’s and Mr. Wickham’s affair by Mr. Darcy’s own words but also paved t he way for the further development of theirrelationship [4].5.ConclusionJane Austin was clever at using the letter, which came at the right time to make her novel more readable and dramatic. When Mr. Darcy’ proposal was rejected relentlessly, the readers who are looking forward to their romance from the very beginning of the story actually begin to hold their breath and cannot wait to turn over the following pages quickly to fulfill their curiosity about what would happen next. In this case, Jane Austin presented us an explanatory and emotional letter from Mr. Darcy in good time. As the turning point of the novel, the writer explained through Dr. Darcy what was remained vague in the previous chapter and foreshadowed the following plot. From this letter, the readers that misunderstand Mr. Darcy’s real nature start to remove their prejudice again Mr. Darcy, even gradually fall in love with him like Elizabeth.

AbstractPride and prejudice is the most popular novel written by Jane Austen. It expressed the view of love and marriage in a mildly humorous way. In her opinion, these are very important factors that the economic situation, knowledge and decent behavior to determine peoples marriage. From the description of four marriages, Austen has showed her opinion clearly: love and marriage is closely associated with property and society, however, love and marriage can not only be decided by the property and social status. An ideal marriage should be based on mutual affection and respect. She rejects the marriage based on wealth and stresses the element of emotion in a marriage.Key Words:Love; marriage; property; social statusI IntroductionPride and Prejudice, the book about commonplace things and ordinary people, is one of Jane Austen’s famous books, being the representative of realistic literature. In portrays, with special sensitive characteristic of female writers, the life and ideas of middle class who live in countryside. This novel makes an analysis of human nature and then stick up readers to think over social relations. This novel takes young people’s mar riage as the thread and it covers the inheritance of fortune, woma n’s social status, ethics and custom. Being the masterpiece of Jane Austen, it comes to the extensive favor of literary lovers and experts at the same time. This paper makes an analysis of four marriages in Pride and Prejudice and discusses the deep outlook for their love and marriage in the light of social back ground at the time.Jane Austen and her Pride and PrejudiceJane Austen (1775-1817) was born in Hampshire, a country priest family located in Hants, the village of Kingston, Sidemen in north England. She was a beautiful, talented middle class woman with extraordinary temperament and good cultivation. Her six novels-Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, Manshifeierde Manor, Emma, Persuasion all describe more than marriage. However, her marriage is like a blank paper in her 42 years real lifetime. Going through the finest time, but eventually without meeting a comfortable partner, she gives up her love. Going through the sweet and bitter feeling which helps her to write the great work pride and prejudice. In this great book, the author amply demonstrates her point about love and marriage. Therefore, in order to analyze these points of views, we should firstly start from her great work.“At that time, according to the social conditions in Britain, a good marria ge for ayoung woman was critical. This phenomenon was closely associated with theBritish society and the status of women in the society. In the 19th century, women were not well respected compared with the ones in the presentsociety. There was no equality between woman and man. Women wereconsidered to be inferior to men in terms of intelligence and capacity. The centrallife of women was forced to be staying at home; their roles were to deal withthe family affairs, such as taking care of the children and serving for thehusband.”(Zhu Hong 1995:34)People naturally thought that women should be submissive to their husbands. The virtues of women were patient and deferent. They must recognize their inherent inferiority to men, s o they must restrict their abilities without conditions. “Although the status of women was slow, few of them expressed dissatisfaction about their own destiny.”(Li Yinhe, 1997:41) At that time, many middle-class young women had three solutions: getting married, staying at home as old maids or working as the family female teachers. The income of family female teacher was very low, and the status was low as well. It was very difficult for them to change or swap out of this status, no one would like to be a maid forever, therefore, in terms of young women, especially those who don’t have enough properties, to get married was the only way for them to gain respect, stability and social status. Austen fully critiqued some bad phenomenon in her work pride and prejudice, taking some perfect points about marriage and love to demonstrate her own view on love and marriage.Walter Scott thus praised her: “That young lady has a talent for describing the involvement and feelings and characters of ordinary life which is to me the most wonderful I ever met with. The big bow-wow strain I can do myself , like any now going ; but the exquisite touch which renders ordinary commonplace things andcharacters interesting from the truth of the description and the sentiment , is denied to me . What a pity such a gifted creature died so early! ”.II The four marriages and the revealed concept of love and marriage1 .The concept of love and marriage in the society at that timeThe stories show the ordinary lives, feelings of the ordinary people. They were linked up in a harmonious order under the author’s meticulous concepts. The work mainly describes four marriages. Two are the main and assisted by the other two assistant marriages.“Darcy and Elizabeth’s love and marriage is the main theme of this work. Afterundergoing many setbacks, Darcy’s arrogance and Elizabeth’s prejudice eventuallyeliminates, the lovers finally get married. The marriage of Elizabeth’s sister Jane andDarcy’s friend Bingley is a nother clue. They deeply love each other, but they aremulti—blocked, after their departure, Jane misses Bingley very much. The twomarriages reflects the another point of view in positive way that marriage should bebased on true love, which is the ideal marry in the author’s opinion. The storiesseem to be the ordinary lives, feelings and persons linked up in a harmonious orderunder the others meticulous concepts. However, the marriage between Charlotte andCollins is a negative example .With the marriage between Lydia and Wickham, which help to make the plots 2more tortuous and richer.”(Zhu Hong, 1985:12) 2. Four marriages in Pride and Prejudice(1)Mr. Collins and Charlotte’s MarriageThe relationship between Mr. Collins and Charlotte is based on economics rather then on love. After having been refused by Elizabeth, Mr. Collins quickly marries Charlotte, who is absolutely one type of woman that needs to marry a manshe is not in love with simply in order to gain financial security. Collins was a foolish and vulgar man who never possesses his own conception of love; he intends to get marriage merely because it was the particular advice and recommendation of Lady Catherine. The combination of Collins and Charlotte reflect that “Truth universally acknowled ged” is “a woman without property must be in want of a husband with a good fortune”.Century conception of the value of love, at that time, marriage was regarded as a market place to exchange upward class mobility and financial support. In order to achieve the goal of marriage, females are good at transforming themselves into commodities by displaying their appearances and accomplishments to appeal to male gazers. Women were encouraged by the social value of performing manners of femininity to win husbands. It is money influenced their love value orientation. (2) Lydia and Wickham’s MarriageThe second marriage is between Bennett’s third daughter Lydia and Wickham, the son of the housekeeper. Originally he is well-treated by the family and the friends. However, he comes down in the world because of his misbehavior. He gets into debt. So, he wants to get money and become rich and change his social status through marriage, marriage is also a way to approach the talents, he is a man without any responsibility. He does nothing except assailing a woman with obscenities. In his opinion, love is only recreation. For his purpose, he entices Lydia and gets her love easily, because she is young, innocent and vainglorious, and loves to go ease and hates to work hard, and is spoilt by her mother. Getting love and praise of a boy is her dream. So when Wickham wants to reach his aim-getting wealth by love and exalts her beauty hypocritically, she forgets who she is and feels she is the most beautiful and happiest girl in the world. Their love does not get the permission from the parents, and then they elope. When Elizabeth hears the news, she believes that their love is false, Wickham would not marry Lydia, because she is no charming and has nothing to attract him, He does not love her but the wealth of her family. The marriage is admitted on the condition of Darcy’s help. Their marriage is consideredto be a scandal in Bennett’s family. But Mrs. Bennet is not disgraceful to this marriage. When Collins gets the news, of course, he is very angry and reacts to the marriage to revenge his early failure of proposal to her. This marriage is one without love. They don’t the real meaning of marriage, they only want to satisfy their love and responsibility. Such couple only seek having had the experience but not everlasting and unchanging. Of course, such kind of marriage is doomed to be a tragedy.(3) Jane and Mr. Bingley’s MarriageThe third marriage is of the eldest daughter Jane and Mr. Bingley. Bingley is a friend of Darcy. Bingl ey’s sister loves Darcy very much. She wants Bingley to get married with Darcy’s sister Georgiana, because she wants to get love from Darcy by this way, which also reflects the selfishness the sister. The marriage of the able man- Bingley and the beautiful girl-Jane is ideal in most people’s eyes. Of course, the couple meets many setbacks, such as the misunderstanding of Darcy and Bingley’s selfish sister. At last, the lovers get married as the misunderstanding between Elizabeth and Darcy has been solved.(4) Darcy and Elizabeth’s MarriageThe fourth marriage is the main theme of the works. That is Darcy and Elizabeth’s marriage. At the beginning, Elizabeth rejects the pursuer-Darcy, because she does not like him, even looks down upon him though Darcy loves her very much. In Elizabeth’s eyes, he is arrogant and unreasonable because he is rich and has high social status. Realizing that, Darcy begins to get rid of those bad habits quietly to crate her taste and get good impression and love of her. Because of Da rcy’s perfect behavior and good education, Elizabeth gradually eliminates the bias on Darcy. Then they spontaneously fall in love. So when Darcy’s se cond suitor is sent to Elizabeth, Elizabeth readily agree with, and they get married and have happy family lives.III Jane Austen’s View of MarriageJane Austen’s view of marriage: “it’s a mistake that in order to obtain property, money and status to get marriage, but marriage does not take into account the factors mention ed above is also a mistake” (Allen. Walter, 1958:22). So, she has married for money against the also opposed to the marriage as a trifling matter. She stressed the importance of the ideal of marriage, and to the feelings of both men and women as the cornerstone of the conclusion of an ideal marriage. Love and marriage is closely associated with property and society, however, love and marriage can not only be decided by the property and social status. An ideal marriage should be based on mutual affection and respect. She rejects the marriage based on wealth and stresses the element of emotion in a marriage.1 .Character is important than appearanceAusten believes that the person’s character is more important than appearance in the matter of a happy marriage. She indicated such a philosophy of love in a letter which is to her niece Fanny Knight: “His social status, family, friends and the most important is his character ... Every aspect of his character is fully explained whether he was worthy of your love.” we should pay more attention to the characters’ mutual respect and moral recognition, if you only emphasis on beauty and appearance the marriage will soon be degenerated. Austen’s this concept are fully reflected in Pride and Prejudice. Mr. Bennet was greedy for the youth and beauty of Gardiner, but her poor intelligence, narrow-minded, ignorant and incompetent, and temperamental personality made his deep and sincere affection for his wife was soon over after marriage.Pride and Prejudice takes the Gard iner couple’s marriage as a typical example. Mr. Gardiner has a refined taste conversation, while his wife is also quite match withhim. Reflected in the novel is the warmth between them and the true feelings in clear-cut family relations. In the novel, the importance of character has also been fully reflected in the combination of Jane and Bingley. Jane looks beautiful, good-natured, gentle and passionate, elegant and refined. Bingley is a gentle and pleasant man with gentlemanly manners. Bingley falls in love with Jane, because she has a good character match with her appearance. Mr. Bennett summed up the similarity of two characters: “Your character s are very similar; you are all willing to accommodate each other when you meet some unhappy things.”Elizabeth firmly believes: “Jane’s well-being will be able to achieve because of Jane’s good temper, it could not be better any longer. This is the basis for happiness, and both of their characters and interests are also very similar.” The actress Elizabeth and t he actor Darcy in the novel have a lot of common in the character. First of all, both of them are extremely self-love, Darcy’s p ride and Elizabeth’s prejudice is obvious. Darcy’s pride is on the basis of his indomitable character, as he hurt Elizabeth verbally, causing her prejudice because of Elizabeth’s self-love. Then she shows prejudice to Darcy. In his first marriage proposal to Elizabeth, there is still existing inner contradiction in his mind: “Aren’t you expect me to be rejoicing for your humble relatives? Do you think if I climb on the social status of those far less of my relatives, but we feel fortunate to do?” These sentences provoked Elizabeth’s anger and refused Mr. Darcy’s marriage propose. Secondly, both Elizabeth and Darcy have two characters--independent personality and the ability of judgment. Elizabeth’s independent personality and the ability of judgment can be reflected that she dares to ignore her mother’s pressure to refuse to marry Collins. From Darcy’s initial arrogance, to overcome its own shortcomings, as well as their consistent behavior of the reflection and the second marriage proposal, Darcy’s independent personality and the ability of judgment can not be neglected. In addition, both of them match with each other in intelligence. Their clever and witty dialogues in the Netherfield and Rosing Manor only can enjoy and interpreted by themselves. Darcy’s words summed up the similarity: “Both of us are reluctant to perform in front of strangers.”They have common in character and mutual appreciation, it is the most solid foundation that they can go into the marriage hall and toward a rational happiness. 2. Money is dear, love is dearerIn the Victorian novel, money is the almighty. Austen’s novel is no exception. To some extent, Austen and the actress lead in choosing their husband, give much attention to money. Because there was no right to inherit property for woman, in order to obtain financial security, it's only through marriage and the ways to achieve this goal. Thus, at the time the marriage market, money has its importance. Such as: to capture in a mystery novel begins with “it is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” The implication is those married women are not property of the husband-bit propertied. However, Austen's own marriage stick to it and she believes that love is the most basic conditions for marriage.3. Love is the base of marriageAustin’s love and marriage view can be seen everywhere in pride and prejudice. Collins believes that he has a good house, an objective of income and the relationship between the De Bourg, Elizabeth is no reason to refuse his proposal. Elizabeth’s reason for the categorically rejected is no feeling. Elizabeth and Darcy’s harmonious union is a microcosm of a perfect marriage for Austin. Darcy well-born and chic, there are 10,000 pounds per year of income; his presence attracted the attention of women. But Darcy is arrogant, selfish and looked down on Elizabeth’s family and relatives, he tried every means can not be to win her heart “you were the last man in the world I could ever marry.”That is to say that her first fancy was emotional not money. As this time it categorically rejected, Darcy has a fundamental change in attitude. When Elizabeth and Darcy meet again in Pemberley, Darcy is different from previous. Elizabeth was heard from the housekeeper that Darcy’s good humor and elegant manners. This makes her very surprised and moved.Elizabeth then realized that Darcy has been in his mind, she also recognized that only they two have most appeals in the thoughts, feelings and interests. She told Jane the mind of “He still love me, we have good discussions. Maybe I used love him but I did not realized.” The combination of Darcy and Elizabeth went through a long and tortuous process, they have mutual understanding and mutual respect, there is love between them, and all this constitutes the most solid of their marriage.IV Practical significanceAusten has a bit of modern spirit. Her perspective for love and marriage surpasses the limit of her time, so what she wanted to deliver is familiar with us living today.“Her works have own high criticism in the 20th century and her readers areincreasing as time goes by. The authoress depicted the daily life in the serene andpicturesque English country, which indicates the realistic content in the romanticbackground. More significantly, her point wisely that reason and emotion areequally essential to happiness. ”(Sampson George) A perfect balance is what we are tried to seek. And this view is not only realistic but also idealistic, because pure romance is unlikely to last in the real world as much as a perfect balance so hard to meet. Hence, such a combination in the autocross’s mind leaves much we can dwell on, which may be the reason why so many people are enchanted with the masterpiece during two hundred years or so.“Austen’s era has passed, but people seeking a better marriage requirement have notchanged and more intense, the view of marriage in Pride and Prejudice is notcompletely divorced from our actual and brings some enlightenment to the modernman. At the beginning of 2005, British BBC4 in the reader's survey also provedthis point: in British society, the greatest impact in women literature and the firstone is Pride and Prejudice.”(Monaghan, David) By description and discussion of the four marriages in the novel, we can see that Austen fully expresses her views on love and marriage: “marriage and property and social status are interconnected. But marriage could not only depend on the property and the social status. The happy marriage should be based on the mutual respect, mutual admiration.”She objects the marriage for money and opposes the thoughtless marriage, but stresses the importance of emotional factors. Austen’s views onmarriage and love are also suitable for our real social. We youth should make right marriage and love views to orient our lives.V ConclusionBy description and discussion of the four marriages in the novel, we can see that Austen gives her own matrimonial value: when people consider marriage, they should not ignore the effect of love and sentiment, although the effect of economic status is very important. Only when two persons love each other and maintain lofty morals, can they get a happy marriage. The marriage based on social position and money can’t bring happy life. Aimless marriage and love are impracticable. Austen’s views on marriage and love are also suitable for our real social. Money cannot buy true love, morality is very important when people are considering love and marriage! We youth should make right marriage and love views to orient our lives.Works citedAllen. Walter. 介绍文学作品英语作文英文回答:My favorite piece of literature is "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen. It is a classic novel that tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet, a strong-willed and intelligent young woman, and her relationship with Mr. Darcy, a wealthy and arrogant landowner. The novel is full of wit, humor, and social commentary, and it explores themes such as love, marriage, and the importance of self-respect.One of the things I love most about "Pride and Prejudice" is its characters. Elizabeth is a complex and relatable heroine. She is intelligent, independent, and outspoken, but she is also flawed and makes mistakes. Mr. Darcy is a proud and arrogant man, but he is also capable of great kindness and compassion. The relationship between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy is one of the most iconic in literature, and it is full of both passion and humor.Another thing I love about "Pride and Prejudice" is its setting. The novel is set in the English countryside during the Regency period. Austen's descriptions of the landscape and the social customs of the time are vivid and detailed, and they help to create a rich and immersive experience for the reader.Overall, "Pride and Prejudice" is a masterpiece of literature that I highly recommend. It is a witty, charming, and thought-provoking novel that explores timeless themes such as love, marriage, and the importance of self-respect.中文回答:我最喜欢的文学作品是简·奥斯汀的《傲慢与偏见》。

Recently, I read a book called "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen. This classic novel tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet, a strong-willed young woman, and her tumultuous relationship with the enigmatic Mr. Darcy. The novel explores themes of love, class, and societal expectations in 19th century England.

One of the aspects of the book that I found most captivating was the character development. Elizabeth Bennet is a complex and multi-dimensional character who undergoes significant growth throughout the novel. She starts off as a prejudiced and judgmental young woman but gradually learns to see beyond surface appearances.我觉得这本书最迷人的一点是人物塑造。

傲慢与偏见读后感1000字左右大学英文全文共10篇示例,供读者参考篇1After reading "Pride and Prejudice", I feel like a grown-up because I learned so much about love, relationships, and society. This book has taught me that first impressions can be wrong and that it's important to not judge people based on their appearance or social status. One of the things I loved about the book is the character of Elizabeth Bennet. She is smart, independent, and doesn't care about what other people think of her. I think she is a great role model for girls because she shows that you can be strong and independent while still being kind and caring.I also learned a lot about love from reading this book. The relationship between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy is complicated, but it shows that love can overcome obstacles like pride and prejudice. It also teaches us that it's important to be true to yourself and not settle for someone who doesn't respect or love you.Another important lesson from the book is about the role of women in society. Elizabeth and her sisters are strong and independent, but they still have to deal with the limitations placed on them by society. This made me appreciate the freedoms and opportunities I have as a modern girl.Overall, "Pride and Prejudice" is a timeless classic that teaches important lessons about love, relationships, and society. It has made me think about how I treat others and the importance of being true to myself. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about life and love.篇2After reading "Pride and Prejudice," I feel like it's a super cool book that's all about love and relationships. It's set inold-timey England, with fancy dresses and big houses and stuff. The main character, Elizabeth Bennet, is a sassy and independent girl who don't need no man to make her happy. She meets Mr. Darcy, who's like, super rich and handsome, but also kinda snooty at first. At first, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy don't like each other at all. Darcy thinks Elizabeth is beneath him, and Elizabeth thinks Darcy is a stuck-up jerk. But then, as they get to know each other better, they realize they were totally wrong about each other. Darcy isn't so bad after all, and Elizabeth is actually really cool. The book taught me that you shouldn't judge people based on first impressions. Just because someone seems snobby or rude, doesn't mean they're a bad person. Everyone has their own story and reasons for acting the way they do. It's important to give people a chance and get to know them before making assumptions.I also learned a lot about love and relationships from the book. Elizabeth and Darcy's relationship is all about overcoming obstacles and learning to accept each other for who they are. They have to deal with misunderstandings and gossip, but in the end, their love conquers all.Overall, "Pride and Prejudice" is a really awesome book that teaches important lessons about love, relationships, and not judging a book by its cover. I think everyone should read it, even if it's a little old-fashioned. Love is timeless, after all.篇3After reading "Pride and Prejudice," I feel like a realgrown-up now. The book is about love and manners, and ittaught me a lot about how important it is to be kind and respectful to others. The story is about a girl named Elizabeth Bennet and a boy named Mr. Darcy. At first, they don't like each other because of their pride and prejudices. But as they get to know each other better, they both realize that they were wrong about each other. They learn to look past their differences and see the good in each other.I think the book teaches us that it's important to not judge people based on appearances or social status. We should give everyone a chance to show who they really are, just like Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy did. And we should always try to be kind and respectful to everyone, no matter who they are.I also learned a lot about manners from the book. The characters in "Pride and Prejudice" talk very politely and behave with good manners. It made me realize how important it is to be polite and well-mannered in all situations.Overall, "Pride and Prejudice" is a really great book that taught me a lot about love, manners, and treating others with respect. I think it's a book that everyone should read, even if it does have some big words in it.篇4After I finished reading "Pride and Prejudice," I felt like I had just been on a rollercoaster ride. It was such a cool book with lots of ups and downs! The story is about this really awesome girl named Elizabeth Bennet and this super rich guy named Mr. Darcy. At first, they totally didn't like each other because of their pride and prejudice. But as they got to know each other better, they started to see that they were actually perfect for each other! One thing I learned from the book is that you shouldn't judge people too quickly. Just because someone seems stuck up or rude, it doesn't mean they're a bad person. Sometimes you have to give them a chance to show their true selves. Like Mr. Darcy, he seemed like such a mean guy at first, but he was actually really kind and caring deep down.Another thing I liked about the book was how it showed the importance of staying true to yourself. Elizabeth didn't care about marrying a rich guy or following society's rules. She just wanted to be happy and find someone who loved her for who she was. I think that's a really cool lesson for all of us, no matter how old we are.Overall, "Pride and Prejudice" was a super fun book to read. It had romance, drama, and lots of funny moments. I think I'll definitely read it again someday. It's one of those books that never gets old, no matter how many times you read it. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good love story with a happy ending!篇5After reading "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen, I feel like it's such a cool book! It's about this girl named Elizabeth Bennet and her family, and how they're all trying to find love and happiness in old-timey England. The characters are so funny and interesting, especially Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley. Mr. Darcy is super rich and kind of grumpy, but he's also really smart and nice deep down. Mr. Bingley is more cheerful and friendly, and he falls in love with Elizabeth's sister Jane. It's fun to see how these guys try to win over the Bennet sisters! But the best part is definitely Elizabeth. She's so feisty and independent, and she doesn't care about marrying someone just for money or status. She stands up for herself and her family, even when people are mean to her. I think she's a great role model for girls like me!I also love the way Jane Austen writes. Her language is so fancy and old-fashioned, but it's also really funny and clever. She pokes fun at all the silly rules and customs of high society, and she shows that true love can conquer all, no matter what your station in life.Overall, "Pride and Prejudice" is a really fun and exciting book that teaches us to be true to ourselves and to follow our hearts. I can't wait to read more of Jane Austen's books and learn more about life in olden times!篇6After I finished reading "Pride and Prejudice", I feel like I've learned a lot! This book is all about manners and society in olden times, and it's super interesting to see how people used to act back then. The main characters, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, have a super complicated relationship but in the end, they figure things out and end up together.I think one of the biggest lessons in this book is not to judge people too quickly. At first, Elizabeth thinks Mr. Darcy is super rude and stuck up, but as she gets to know him better, sherealizes he's actually a pretty great guy. It's like you can't judge a book by its cover, you know?Another thing I learned is that it's important to be true to yourself. Elizabeth doesn't want to marry just anyone for money or status, she wants to marry someone she actually loves. And in the end, she sticks to her beliefs and ends up with Mr. Darcy because of it.Overall, "Pride and Prejudice" is a super cool book that teaches you a lot about love, manners, and sticking to your beliefs. I'm definitely going to try to be more like Elizabeth and not judge people too quickly. It's a classic for a reason!篇7After finishing the book Pride and Prejudice, I feel like it's so cool! It's about this girl named Elizabeth and this guy named Darcy who don't like each other at first but then they fall in love. It's like a really big romantic story with fancy parties and stuff.I also learned a lot of fancy words from the book, like "prejudice" and "arrogant". Prejudice is when you judge someone without knowing them, and arrogant is when you think you're better than everyone else. I think it's important to not beprejudiced and arrogant, and to treat everyone with kindness and respect.I really like Elizabeth because she's smart and brave, and she stands up for herself. She doesn't let people push her around and she stays true to herself. I think we can all learn from her and be more like her.I also like how the book talks about society and class differences. It shows that even though people might be rich or poor, they're all just people and they should treat each other with respect. It's important to not look down on people just because they're different from us.Overall, I really enjoyed reading Pride and Prejudice. It's a great book with lots of important lessons about love, friendship, and treating others with kindness. I think everyone should read it and learn from it.篇8"Wow, I just finished reading Pride and Prejudice for my university English class and it was totally awesome! At first, I was like, why do we have to read this old book from a long time ago? But once I got into it, I couldn't put it down!I loved how the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, was so strong and independent. She didn't just sit around waiting for a man to come save her, she stood up for herself and knew what she wanted. And Mr. Darcy, he was so mysterious and handsome, I couldn't stop thinking about him!The whole story was so full of drama and romance, I felt like I was right there in 19th century England with all the fancy balls and parties. But there were also lots of funny moments, like when Mr. Collins proposed to Elizabeth or when Mrs. Bennet was always trying to marry off her daughters. But the best part of the book was how it showed that people can change and grow. At first, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy didn't like each other at all, but as they got to know each other better, they realized they were actually perfect for each other. It was like a big lesson in not judging people too quickly and giving them a chance.Overall, Pride and Prejudice was a super cool book and I'm so glad I read it. It made me think about love and relationships in a whole new way. I can't wait to read more books by Jane Austen and see what other adventures are waiting for me in her stories!"篇9After reading the book "Pride and Prejudice," I feel like Elizabeth Bennet is super cool and Mr. Darcy is not too bad either. They are total opposites but somehow they end up falling in love, which is kind of surprising but also cute.I love how Elizabeth is so independent and smart. She doesn't let anyone boss her around and she stands up for herself. She knows what she wants and she goes after it. I wish I could be more like her and not care so much about what other people think.Mr. Darcy, on the other hand, is kind of stuck up at first. He thinks he's better than everyone else because he's rich and handsome. But as the story goes on, we see that he's actually a really nice guy deep down. He just needed someone like Elizabeth to show him that he can't judge people based on their social status. The book also talks a lot about society and how people are always trying to one-up each other. I think that's still true today, even though it's been like a million years since this book was written. People are always trying to show off how rich or smart or fancy they are, instead of just being themselves.Overall, I really enjoyed "Pride and Prejudice." It was a fun read and I think it taught me a lot about not judging people tooquickly and being true to myself. I hope I can be as cool as Elizabeth Bennet someday!篇10After I finished reading "Pride and Prejudice," I felt like I was transported back in time to the world of Jane Austen's characters. The story is all about love, social class, and family relationships. It's like a soap opera from the 19th century but way more classy! The main characters, Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, are such a funny pair. At first, they hate each other because of their pride and prejudice. Mr. Darcy is all rich and snobbish, while Elizabeth is just a simple, smart girl. But as the story goes on, they fall in love and learn to look beyond their differences. It's like a fairytale, but with more drama and witty dialogue.I also love how the book talks about society and marriage in old England. It's so different from our modern world, where we can choose who we want to marry. Back then, it was all about money, status, and family connections. I can't imagine living in a world like that!Overall, "Pride and Prejudice" is a funny, heartwarming, and sometimes frustrating story. It made me laugh, cry, and even roll my eyes at some of the characters. But in the end, it taught methat love can conquer all, even pride and prejudice. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance with a touch of comedy.。

傲慢与偏见 读后感英文

傲慢与偏见 读后感英文

傲慢与偏见读后感英文After reading "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen, I am left with a deep sense of admiration for the author's ability to capture the complexities of human nature and society in such a compelling and timeless manner. The novel is a masterpiece of wit, social commentary, and romance, and it has left a lasting impression on me.One of the most striking aspects of the novel is Austen's keen insight into the social dynamics of her time. Through the interactions of the characters and theportrayal of their various social circles, she skillfully exposes the prejudices and injustices that were prevalent in 19th century England. The rigid class structure and the emphasis on wealth and status are shown to be significant barriers to true happiness and fulfillment. This theme is particularly relevant today, as we continue to grapple with issues of inequality and social mobility. The character of Elizabeth Bennet is a particularlycompelling embodiment of Austen's critique of social norms and expectations. Elizabeth's intelligence, independence, and refusal to conform to the expectations of her society make her a truly revolutionary figure. Her refusal to marry for convenience or social advancement, and her insistenceon marrying for love, is a powerful statement about the importance of personal agency and individual choice. Elizabeth's journey of self-discovery and growth is both inspiring and relatable, and her eventual union with Mr. Darcy is a satisfying and uplifting conclusion to the novel. In addition to its social commentary, "Pride and Prejudice" is also a deeply romantic and entertaining story. The relationship between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy is one of the most iconic and enduring in literature, and their journey from initial animosity to mutual understanding and love is a joy to witness. Austen's wit and humor are onfull display in the novel, and her sharp observations of human behavior and the absurdities of society are both amusing and thought-provoking.Overall, "Pride and Prejudice" is a timeless classicthat continues to resonate with readers of all ages. Austen's insightful portrayal of human nature and society, her memorable characters, and her engaging storytelling make this novel a true treasure of literature. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to experience the world of "Pride and Prejudice," and I look forward to revisiting it in the future.。

Mr Darcy and Elizabeth are the two main characters in Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice. Pride and Prejudice, two words that bring the good as well as the bad to a personality. With pride comes a sense of exemplary worth, a sense of great accomplishment with oneself. With prejudice, preconceived ideas and intolerance towards the party in which the prejudice is upon. In this novel ,Elizabeth Bennett recognized Mr Darcy 's pride and this led to her prejudice toward him. Their relationship changed mostly related to their pride and prejudice . This paper mainly talks about what the relationship between Mr Darcy and Elizabeth is and how they develop such relationship. The relationship between Mr Darcy and Elizabeth has changed all though the novel. The two persons are like two lines and the relationship between them is like the distance between the two lines. The proess of their relationship development can mainly be devided into three period . In the first period ,at the very beginning, the two lines were parallel. But because of one person ,Mr Bingley ,they had chance to meet and from then on ,one line, Mr Darcy, moved slowly to the other ,Elizabeth. But Elizabeth remained on the original place. Therefor the distence between them didn't change too much and their relationship could only be defined as acquaintances. In the second period,Mr Darcy was fascinated to Elizabeth so he moved more and more quicly to Elizabeth while Elizabeth's prejudice on Mr Darcy grew deeper and deeper so she wanted to get away from him.At the end of this period , Mr Darcy got the highest point of admiring Elizabeth and proposed to her while Elizabeth got the highest point of hating Mr Darcy and refused his propose. They were both hurt. And their path toward to or away from each other stopped. Though at last Mr Darcy wrote a letter to Elizabeth to explian the truth ,the distance between them was no shorter than they first met.It is hard to define what their relationship exactly is in this period. Mr Darcy loved Elizabeth while Elizabeth hated Mr Darcy but finally found that she had misunderstood him so much that she said a lot offensive words to him. In the thrid period , things finally began to get a litter smoother. Both of them were willing to move toward each other and the distance between them get closer and closer and finally the two line became one. In the end of this period we can be sure that therelationship between them is man and wife. What a happy ending!Their families ,friends, and most importantly their own pride and prejudice are all the elements that make their relationship change.Period IBefore Mr Darcy came to Longbourn,he and Elizabeth were totally strangers. Mr Darcy was the son of a wealthy, well-established family and the master of the great estate of Pemberley while Elizabeth was one of the five daughters in a decant family in Meryton. Their relationship was like two parallel lines. If it was not for Mr Bingley ,they might never meet each other . When they first met at the ball , the line began to move. Let 's see what their first impressions of each other were. When Mr. Bingley asked Mr Darcy to dance with Elizabeth, Mr Darcy coldly said, ``She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me." Their conversation happened to be heard by Elizabeth who remained with no very cordial feelings towards Mr Darcy. It's the first time that Elizabeth knew Mr Darcy's pride and began to has prejudice on him.Since their first impressions of each other were no more than good. Their relationship didn't turn to positive side. Fortunately, Mr Darcy's friend Mr. Bingley admired Elizabeth's sister ,the eldest Miss Bennet, they two had chances to further their relationship. They met again in Mr. Bingley's house when Elizabeth came to see her sick sister. During this time they were allowed to know more about each other and Mr Darcy's opnions towards Elizabeth began to change "He had at first scarcely allowed her to be pretty; he had looked at her without admiration at the ball; and when they next met, he looked at her only to criticise. But no sooner had he made it clear to himself and his friends that she had hardly a good feature in her face, than he began to find it was rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark eyes. To this discovery succeeded some others equally mortifying. Though he had detected with a critical eye more than one failure of perfect symmetry in her form, he was forced to acknowledge her figure to be light and pleasing; and in spite of his asserting that her manners were not those of the fashionable world, he was caught by their easy playfulness. But of this Elizabeth was perfectly unaware; -- to her he was only the manwho made himself agreeable no where, and who had not thought her handsome enough to dance with. "Then another ball was given and the two met again. This time was Elizabeth who refused to dance with Mr Darcy. "But her resistance had not injured her with the gentleman, and he was thinking of her with some complacency." He even said to Miss Bingley "My mind was more agreeably engaged. I have been meditating on the very great pleasure which a pair of fine eyes in the face of a pretty woman can bestow.'" As to Elizabeth ,she had little interest in Mr Darcy though she could not help observing, " how frequently Mr. Darcy's eyes were fixed on her. She hardly knew how to suppose that she could be an object of admiration to so great man; and yet that he should look at her because he disliked her was still more strange. She could only imagine however, at last, that she drew his notice because there was a something about her more wrong and reprehensible, according to his ideas of right, than in any other person present. The supposition did not pain her. She liked him too little to care for his approbation."In this period, Mr Darcy was attracted by Elizabeth, but he also began to feel the danger of paying Elizabeth too much attention. "He wisely resolved to be particularly careful that no sign of admiration should now escape him, nothing that could elevate her with the hope of influencing his felicity." While Elizabeth still remained with no very cordial feelings towards Mr Darcy. But at least the line of Mr Darcy had moved a little to the line of Elizabeth ,so they were no longer parallel lines that by no means of having any intersection point.Period IIIn the first period the line of Elizabeth remained on the original place. She showed no interest in Mr Darcy at all. Then Mr. Wickham emerged. He gave Elizabeth the impression that he had become a helpless, poor soldier because of Mr. Darcy, making Elizabeth sickened at the thought of Darcy's cruelty. "I had not thought Mr. Darcy so bad as this- though I have never liked him, I had not thought so very ill of him- I had supposed him to be despising his fellow-creatures in general, but did not suspect himof descending to such malicious revenge, such injustice, such inhumanity as this!" . Wickham is also able to make Elizabeth believe that Darcy was to be married. "Miss de Bourgh, will have a very large fortune, and it is believed that she and her cousin will unite the two estates" . By making Elizabeth dislike Darcy even more than she already does, and by making her believe he is going to be married to Miss de Bourgh, Wickham is able to push Elizabeth even further away from Darcy, and make her less likely to fall in love with him. Therefor the line of Elizabeth began to move away from Mr Darcy. Then they met again. This time Mr Darcy talked to Elizabeth voluntarily . But the storm was on its way. When Elizabeth knew that it was Mr Darcy who retaining Mr. Bingley for his sister. Her prejudice toward Mr Darcy reached the highest point. Poor Mr Darcy didn't know it at all and he chose this worst time to propose to her.``In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.'' That is the words from Mr Darcy and this is his reply:``From the very beginning, from the first moment I may almost say, of my acquaintance with you, your manners, impressing me with the fullest belief of your arrogance, your conceit, and your selfish disdain of the feelings of others, were such as to form that ground-work of disapprobation, on which succeeding events have built so immoveable a dislike; and I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed on to marry.''Well , after this failed propose, their raletionship droped into the lowest point.Mr Darcy was deeply hurt when he found out that his characters were so intolerable in Elizabeth heart. Elizabeth regreted her unjust accusations of Darcy when she knew the truth but she still resented his manner of proposing, and doesn't regret having turned him down and had the slightest inclination ever to see him again.Period IIIAt the end of last period , Mr Darcy and Elizabeth's raletionship droped into the lowest point. Their path towards or away from each other stopped. Then came theunexpected meeting which was the tunning point. Elizabeth and her uncle and aunt was visiting Mr Darcy house which the owner was not supposed to be back soon.Darcy's housekeeper's praise of him threw an unexpected light on his character, and Elizabeth softened a little in her feelings toward him. Then Mr Darcy suddenly came back. He was still in love with Elizabeth and he did everything to make her happy. And for Elizabeth what she saw andwhat she heard proved that Mr Darcy was a man of favorable characters. Her prejudice on Mr Darcy died away. When She knew that it was Mr Darcy that helped her eloped sister get married in order to redeem her family's reputation she was convinced that Mr Darcy was the one that deserved her love. Finally they became man and wife.A man and a woman get marraid , they don't just marry the person but marry everything the person has and around he or she. That's why the relationship between Mr Darcy and Elizabeth changed several times before they finally get marriad. Compared to Mr Darcy, Elizabeth family background is much inferior and her condition in life is so decidedly beneath his. Mr Darcy is the son of a wealthy, well-established family and the master of the great estate of Pemberley . He has over ten thousand pounds income a year . His relatives are all wealthy and noble people . Elizabeth is one of the five daughters in a decent family in Meryton. She dosen't have any income and after her father dies she won't have much money and may be drived out off their house . Her relatives are all ordinary people without much wealth. Here is her own opinions "In her own past behaviour, there was a constant source of vexation and regret; and in the unhappy defects of her family a subject of yet heavier chagrin. They were hopeless of remedy. Her father, contented with laughing at them, would never exert himself to restrain the wild giddiness of his youngest daughters; and her mother, with manners so far from right herself, was entirely insensible of the evil. Elizabeth had frequently united with Jane in an endeavour to check the imprudence of Catherine and Lydia; but while they were supported by their mother's indulgence, what chance could there be of improvement? Catherine, weak-spirited, irritable, and completely under Lydia's guidance, had been always affronted by their advice; andLydia, self-willed and careless, would scarcely give them a hearing. They were ignorant, idle, and vain. While there was an officer in Meryton, they would flirt with him; and while Meryton was within a walk of Longbourn, they would be going there for ever. "Except for their family background, their own characters are the most important reasons that lead to the changes of their relationship. For Elizabeth her honesty, virtue, and lively wit enable her to rise above the nonsense and bad behavior that pervade her class-bound and often spiteful society .Nevertheless, her sharp tongue and tendency to make hasty judgments often lead her astray. Elizabeth must not only cope with a hopeless mother, a distant father, two badly behaved younger siblings, and several snobbish, antagonizing females, she must also overcome her own mistaken impressions of Darcy, which initially lead her to reject his proposals of marriage. Her charms are sufficient to keep him interested, fortunately, while she navigates familial and social turmoil. As she gradually come s to recognize the nobility of Darcy’s character, she realizes the error of her initial prejudice against him. Mr Darcy is intelligent and forthright, he too has a tendency to judge too hastily and harshly, and his high birth and wealth make him overly proud and overly conscious of his social status. Indeed, his haughtiness makes him initially bungle his courtship. When he proposes to her, for instance, he dwells more on how unsuitable a match she is than on her charms, beauty, or anything else complimentary. Her rejection of his advances builds a kind of humility in him. Darcy demonstrates his continued devotion to Elizabeth, in spite of his distaste for her low connections, when he rescues Lydia and the entire Bennet family from disgrace, and when he goes against the wishes of his haughty aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, by continuing to pursue Elizabeth. Darcy proves himself worthy of Elizabeth, and she ends up repenting her earlier, overly harsh judgment of him.ReferencesPride and Prejudice published by Central Compilation & Translation Press (2008-9-1)。
