Could you be more specific?Jake:Most television viewers don't have much patience.They want faster interviews.They want more action - more questions - more answers - more pictures.Chris:Do you think my interview is boring?Jake:I don't think all of it is boring.Chris:Y ou just think half of it is boring.Jake:I think some of it is boring.But I also think some of it is great,really interesting.Chris:Which part do you think is interesting?Jake:What are you doing?Chris:I'm eating my lunch.Jake:It's only 10 o'clock in the morning.Most people eat breakfast now.Chris:Well,I won't eat all of it now.Cheris:Do you want a piece of cake?Jake:No,thanks.Chris:Y ou can have half of my sandwich.I'll eat more lunch later at lunch time.Jake:Thanks,really.I don't want any of it.It's too early in the morning for me to eat.And it's definitely too early for a salami sandwich.Chris:Sorry.I eat when I'm nervous.Please,Jake.I need your help on this.Jake:Don't be nervous.I'm trying to help you.Y ou should have seen my first tape.It was terrible.It was so bad,they couldn't even use it.Chris:Not even part of it?Jake:No.All of it was terrible.Chris:Look,I know that you're busy and you probably don't have time for me,but...Jake:I have to admit,I'm pretty busy.The new owner wants me to get better ratings.I'd like to have more time for so many things.Chris:Please go over my tape with me one more time and tell me how I can make it better? Jake:Sure,but first you have to do one thing.Chris:Anything.Jake:Get rid of that sandwich.I can't stand it when people eat in the editing room.Chris:It's gone.Jake:Explain once more what you were trying to do.Chris:My assignment for school was to interview people about their lives.So I thought it would be interesting to ask people what's missing in their lives.What would make their lives better.And I just asked anyone who walked by.Should I play it now?Jake:Sure.Chris:Hello,this is Chris Bloom.Today is the first day of spring.It's a time when people feelenergetic.They have a new outlook on life.We decided to find out what people want out of their lives this spring.Mike:More time.I definitely want to find more time.Steven:More money and fewer financial problems.Rita:More love in my life.That's what I want.Terry:More friends.Roger:More clothes,more money,and fewer arguments.Detective Modine:Less crime and more parking places.Terry:Less pressure and more time to enjoy life.Chris:But the answer most people gave was time.More people want more time to accomplish their goals and enjoy their lives.I'm Chris Bloom,hoping you have more of everything you want this spring.Jake:It's not bad,but I think it needs more work.The problems that it's not news.We would never use it on the air.Y ou need to find a real news story.Chris:Like what?Jake:Come on,I'll show you.just heard that someone wants to take over part of the Stamford Nature Center and turn it into apartment buildings.Chris:Oh,no.Boy,that's a story! Can I bring my camera?Jake:Sure.Chris:Oh,Right!Lesson 2 Do you like to live dangerously,Rita?Rita:How's my favorite cameraman? Oh,my back.Mike:Those tapes were too heavy for you.Rita:A few years ago,I could carry twenty tapes if I wanted.Mike:We all get older.Rita:Y ou know,Mike,I never thought it would come this fast.I just can't believe it's time for me to retire.How did I get so old so fast?Mike:Most people don't retire at your age.Y ou look great.Rita:I feel great.In fact,I feel marvelous.Mike:So,why are you retiring?Rita:I love my job.I love being a make up artist.But I always promised myself I would start a new life when I reached this age.Mike:I think that's terrific.There are so many things you can do with your life.Y ou're still young enough to enjoy yourself.Rita:Y ou bet I am.And there are a lot of things I can still do pretty well.I can still play tennis beautifully.Mike:I've seen you.Y ou're a wonderful tennis player.Rita:I'm a very good swimmer.I can ski fairly well too.Mike:And you dance gracefully.Rita:Gracefully? That's a word for an old lady,Mike.Mike:Excuse me.Y ou're a hot dancer.Rita:That's more like it.I'm not going to retire and sit around in a rocking chair,I can tell you that.Mike:What are those?Rita:These are videos from all over the world.I can live anywhere I want now.I can do anything I want.Mike:Y ou have a whole new life in front of you.Rita:That's true.I want you to do me a favor.Mike:Sure.Rita:I don't have time to watch all these tapes.I can't even carry all of them.Can you edit these onto a shorter tape?I want to show them to Terry so we can decide where I should go.Mike:Terry?Rita:My new boyfriend.Mike:I want to meet this Terry.Rita:He's a nice person.Y ou'll like him.He's an editor and he's been doing some work on the mystery program".Murder at Midnight".Mike:Any friend of yours is a friend of mine.Rita:Thanks,Mike...Hey,look at all these places I can go..Singapore,Grand Turk Island,the Bahamas,Italy,Mexico..Mike:Rita,these tapes are fabulous.This tape is about Grand Turk Island.This may be the spot where Christopher Columbus reached America.Look at that beautiful beach! Y ou could live comfortably here and never have another worry...A lot of tourists arrive in Grand Turk Island every week...They come here to relax...and have a good time.But the best thing here is the scuba diving...If you like to dive,this is the place for you...Look at her.She's so graceful.Doesn't she swim beautifully?...Do you like to live dangerously,Tita? Well,it can be dangerous under water...Don't touch that.It'll hurt you...The scuba divers love the water here at Grand Turk,but they're also careful about what they touch and where they swim.I've been to Grand Turk,Rita.Y ou'd love it for a year or two.But it might be too quiet for you.There are no nightclubs.No discotheques.Watch this next tape if you want something fun!Lesson 3 We're experiencing technical difficulties.Mike:Grand Turk Island may be too quiet for you,Rita.If you want more excitement,here's Singapore.This is the mysterious Orient(n.东方)...The food is the best in the world...The people are interesting.They come from all over the world...But Singapore is crow ded,and you can't live here cheaply,Rita.Singapore is an is more relaxed...It's center of an has more nightclubs and fewer problems than Singapore...And the man are very romantic,Rita.Y ou could live here nicely.That's all for now.I have to run.Steven:Before I say anything else,Jake,I want to compliment(vt.表扬) you.I think you're doing a fine job.Jake:Thank you.And I think you're doing a great job too.People seem to be very happy here.Y ou're a good producer.By the way,I like your beard.Steven:Thanks.But I have a problem.Peter Case,my boss,the man who owns this station,hoped he could improve the ratings.Instead,our audience is disappearing.Jake:What?I thought we were doing well.Steven:Bad things keep happening,Jake.For example,we showed three movies last month.They were very inexpensive(adj.廉价的) and we found out why.They all had technical problems.Badsound.Bad picture.We won't buy cheap movies anymore.Jake:I guess it's like what Abe Lincoln said:"Y ou can fool some of the peole all of the time;Y ou can fool all of the people some of the time;Y ou can't fool all the people all the time".Steven:There's another problem.Look at these ratings.We lost half of our viewers last night. Jake:How is that possible?Steven:Everything was going beautifully.And then you did your story - and we lost half of our audience.Jake:In the middle of my story?Steven:In the middle of your story!Jake:Something's going on,Steven.People don't just tune out in the middle of a story.Steven:I know.Jake:Maybe it's a technical problem.Steven:I'll check that.Jake:I'll ask my new editor.Have you met him?He's very good.Steven:Who is he?Jake:Roger Ward.I went to college with him.He edited an award - winning show on Iran.He's an excellent editor.He works quickly and professionally.Steven:Can he work well with people? Maybe he can work with that assistant,Chris.Jake:I don't know about Chris,but I'll get something flashy for tonight's news.Steven:Thanks,Jake.I knew I could count on you.Jake:In Washington today,the President made important decisions about the budget.Connie Swift is at the White House with a report on the President's announcement.Mike:Milan has more nightclubs and fewer problems that Singapore...And the men are very romantic,Rita.Y ou could live here nicely.Jake:I'm sorry.We're experiencing technical difficulties.Obviously,that was not Connie Swift at the White House.We'll have that story for you a little later in the show.First,here's Jim Stuart at the mayor's office.Jake:Steven,what happened? How did Rita's tape get on the air?Something's going on here,and I don't like it.Lesson 4 That was one of the strangest mistakes I've ever seenChris:Y ou've been the makeup person here for a long time,Rita.Can you tell me one of your favorite moments at WEFL?Rita:There are so many...This woman was one of the most difficult people I've ever worked with. Chris:Why?Rita:She was too energetic.She wouldn't sit still.Chris:It must have been hard to put on her makeup.Rita:It was one of the worst makeup jobs I've ever done.Chris:It couldn't have been that bad.Rita:It was.She had lipstick on her eyes.Chris:Y ou really love your work,don't you?Rita:Oh,yes.I love WEFL.Chris:So is it going to be hard for you to leave?Rita:Oh,yes and no.Of course after what happened,I'd like to run away forever.Chris:Y ou mean the video tapes?How did that happen?Rita:I don't know.That was one of the strangest mistakes I've ever seen.Chris:It was strange.Rita:It was also one of the most embarrassing moments I've ever had.Chris:So when you leave,Where will you go?What will you do?Rita:There are all kinds of possibilities.Chris:Like what?Rita:I always wanted to be a belly dancer.Chris:Oh,come on.Rita:Well,on my last vacation I went to Florida,to Palm Beach.Chris:I've heard of that place.Rita:It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to.Chris:Really?Rita:And it had some of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen.Chris:So are you moving there?Rita:No.It was me one of the most boring places I've ever gone to...I need excitement,fun,and someone who will make me laugh.Jake:Our next segment is a weekend update on travel.What happens when you take a vacation in Britain?It's easy,right?Everyone there uses exactly the same English words,right?Wrong,as we'll find out from James Morgan.James Morgan:This is James Morgan reporting on travel.The British call it going on holiday.The Americans call it going on vacation.Either way,traveling in Britain can be surprisingly easy and fun.But you'll need to know British English or traveling will be rather difficult.For example,if you ask for the subway in London,you won't find the underground train system at all.We call that the "underground"or the "tube".If you travel by car on the motorway,you'll need an international driving license.Y ou'll also need to drive on the left-hand side of the road,if you don't want to crash into a car or a large lorry.That's the correct "English" name for a truck...We haven't got "gasoline"in England.We've got "petrol".If you don't call it by its proper name,you'll run into problems.If you want to buy "petrol",you'll need to go to a "petrol station".So,travel to Britain.The British will be delighted to see you there,especially if you spend a lot of money.But,please,mind your language.Call things by their proper names.This is James Morgan on travel.Jake:James Morgan will be a regular feature(n.特征，特写，专题) cameraman.His work is excellent.His work is so good that I hardly need to edit it.Roger:Well,then you don't need me.Jake:Of course we need you,Roger.But Mike does such good work that editing is easier.Here,let me show you...This place is so messy that I can never find anything.It was clean yesterday.Ah,here it is.Jake:Look at this.It's the Nature Center.Roger:It's pretty.Jake:It's also important to the whole city...But someone is planning to build apartment buildings here,in these woods.Roger:So what?Jake:Apartment buildings could ruin the Nature Center.It's such an important decision that WEFL is asking some tough questions about it.We don't have very many answers yet.It's all so mysterious.Roger:Hey,what's wrong with the tape?Jake:I don't understand what's going on here.The whole tape is like this.It's damaged.Roger:When you figure it out,let's get to work.Jake:I don't get it.I looked at this last night and it was perfect.Now the tape is so damaged that I can't use it.Roger:Y ou'd better talk to your cameraman.Meanwhile,it's such a beautiful day that I think I'll go for a drive.Jake:What are you doing?Roger:I don't need it.I lost the other one.Oh,well (i)Chris:Hello.Chris:Wow,Roger Ward!He's such a good editor.He did the famous program about Iran.It was one of the best pieces of journalism I've ever seen.I think he won an award.Jake:This is so strange that I can't believe it.This tape was perfect yesterday.Chris,you didn't look at this tape without me,did you?Chris:No.What happened?Jake:It's in such bad condition that I can't even watch it.Chris:Oh,no.How?Jake:I don't know.First it was Rita's silly tape.And now this.I don't know what to think.Chris:I shot some videotape at the Nature Center.Jake:Y ou have a good little camera.I might be able to use it.I'm so upset with this mess that I'll try anything.Chris:OK.I'll go and get the tape.Jake,can I help you with this story?I know people at the Nature Center.I'd love to work with you.Jake:Sure.Chris:All right!Mike:I'm trying to figure out how this vacation tape...got out on the air...This wiring is such a mess that I'll never figure it out...Someone might have left the tape in an editing machine.But how could someone put it on the air by mistake?...I've thought so much about it that I'm dizzy (I)couldn't have given the wrong tape to the tape operator by accident.I'm so sure I didn't give him this tape that I'd bet money on it...And what happened to Jake's tape?The editing seemed OK...There's an answer here somewhere,and I'll find it.Lesson 6 Do you think that someone was spying on us?Chris:Hey.Look at that shot.That's one of the best shots I've ever done.Do you think you can use it?Jake:I'm not sure.Uh,maybe.Let's look at that again.Chris:Y ou went so fast,I think you passed the spot.Jake:None.Listen,I've done this so much that I can feel exactly when it's the right time to stop. Chris:Y ou're amazing.Jake:Yeah.The shot looks OK.Chris:That's such a great compliment,coming from you.Jake:Y ou can see where the apartments will be.It's one of the prettiest places I've seen.And they're going to ruin it.It's such a stupid place to put apartments.Chris:Some of these shots might work,Jake.Jake:The camera's so shaky,I can't see what's happening.Chris:What is that?I don't remember anyone out there.Of course I was holding the camera for such a long time that my arm almost fell off.Jake:The tape's moving so fast that I can't see.Let's slow it down.Chris:Look at that.That's a person.Jake:Wait a minute.I was there.Mike was there.Y ou were there.I don't remember anybody else. Chris:It's such a strange place for someone to be.Behind a tree?Jake:It's so strange that I'm beginning to get a little uncomfortable.Chris:What are you going to do?Jake:I don't know yet.Chris:Do you think that someone was spying on us?Jake:It looks that way.But who?Chris:I hate to say it,but it's probably someone right here at the station.Who knew that we were going out there?Jake:Not many people.Uh,Steven,Roger,you,me,Mike,and...that's it.Chris:And Rita.Jake:Tita?Chris:Y ou know Rita.She's so nice that people tell her everything.I told her about going to the Nature Center with you.Jake:What do you know about Rita's new boyfriend?Chris:He's one of the nicest guys she's ever gone out with.He's such a nice guy that she'd like to marry him.And he's an editor for the mystery program"Murder at Midnight".Jake:What's his name?Chris:I can't remember...Terry something.But wait- I have it here on this tape.I've been interviewing people at the station.I did a long interview with Rita.She told me about Terry. Jake:Can I see it?Chris:Y es,of course.Chris:Y ou work so hard that you don't have much time for anything else.Rita:It's true.I've been so busy that I haven't had much of a social life.In fact,my social life wasn't great until recently.Chris:What's changed?Rita:I met a man.He's one of the most interesting men I've ever known.He's so interesting that I don't even think about my job.Chris:What's his name?Rita:Terry.Terry Smithers.I never thought I'd feel this way toward anybody again,A friend introduced us.We went out to dinner and we had such a good time that we stayed until therestaurant closed.And the food was so bad!It was one of the worst restaurants I've ever been to.It was so bad that it was funny.We laughed so hard,we cried.It was wonderful.We talked about everything.And after that,we went dancing.Chris:No.Rita:Y es.He's such a good dancer.Chris:Y ou are too.Rita:Y ou should have seen us dance.We danced so well together that people stopped to watch.And we've been together ever since.Jake:Rita is such a talker.She knew you were taping her,didn't she?Chris:Y es.I've been taping everyone at the station.Jake:Y ou didn't tape me.Chris:I'm saving the best for last.Jake:People like to talk to you.I'd like to see more of your interviews.Maybe we'll find a clue to what's going on here.Lesson 7 I keep trying to figure out why.Rita:I love the peace and quiet here.I have no desire to go back to work.Terry:I wish I didn't have to go back to work either,but I have so much to do.Rita:Y ou're so mysterious.Y ou haven't even told me what you're working on.Terry:"Murder at Midnight".Rita:I know that.But you've been working on something else.I have so many questions and you avoid answering them.Sometimes I feel that I don't really know you.Terry:Ask me anything.Rita:Why do you need me to ask Mike to let you into that editing room?Terry:Anything but that.Y ou'll find out soon.Rita:I keep trying to figure out why.I think I know the reason,but it just doesn't make sense. Terry:Forget it.Can't you just think about us?I love you,Rita.Rita:About us?Terry:Y es.Rita:But why?Terry:Maybe it's the way you dance.Rita:Maybe we should go dancing more often.Terry:I love the way you make me laugh.Chris:I have to hand in this report tomorrow,and I have to type it up myself.Thank heaven for computers.If I make a mistake,I don't have to type it over.I just cross out the mistake...Oh,I'm such a had typist.It's so hard to pick out he mistakes on this screen...Fortunately,this computer can check spelling.I just hit this button...The computer points out the mistakes and fills in the correct spelling automatically...I just need to print out the pages...and run of some copies,...and we're all set...I forgot to clean up.I have to put away the pencils,...throw away this paper,...and shut off the computer.James Morgan:Hello.This is James Morgan with another report on travel.A good way to visit our country is to stay for a fortnight or longer.Stay for a year.The pace is slower,and your trip will be much less expensive if you plan will...In that case,it will be much cheaper if you take a flat in London.Take a flat.That means "rent an apartment".Y ou'll have your own cooker and fridge so thatyou can make you own meals.Y ou may be lucky enough to have a lift in the building.That means an elevator...Y ou'll need a telephone so that you can ring up our world-famous theaters for tickets to all the shows.That's my favorite pastime in London--the theater...So please come.We'd love to have you.I'm James Morgan on travel.Lesson 8 It's important to listen to people and what they have to ask.Mike:I've been working at WEFL for many years now.I love my job.When I look back on these years,I miss some of the people I used to work with.It can get crazy here sometimes,but I don't pay any attention.I just laugh at people who take themselves too seriously.It's important to listen to people and what they have to say.That's probably why I've been able to stay here so long.I pay attention to the details,and I keep a sense of humor about my job.Jake:That's Mike for you.Chris:Well,how did you like that interview?Jake:In my opinion,it was interesting,Chris:Do you want to look at it again?Jake:No.Did he talk about Rita or Terry?Chris:I asked him what he thought about Rita's new boyfriend.Jake:And?Chris:He didn't know very much about him.Jake:Did he find the technical Problem?Chris:No.He talked about it a little bit.He's looking for a bad wire in the control room.Jake,you don't think that Mike had anything to do with it,do you?Jake:No,I don't.Did you talk to anybody else?Chris:Not yet.I'm going to talk to Terry later today.Jake:Good.Ask him how ofter he goes to the Nature Center.So there's nothing else for me to look at?Chris:Well,yes,there is.Jake:What?Chris:My latest story for school.Will you look at it and tell me what you think about it?Jake:Is there anything special you want me to look for?Chris:Just watch for mistakes.And promise you won't laugh at me.Jake:I never laugh at you.Chris:OK.Here goes.I worked on this for a whole day,so be kind.Jake:I'm waiting for you to turn it on.Chris:OK.Chris:Spring!It's the time for new beginnings.Long walks and romance.Has spring fever come to Stamford?Chris:Jake,what did you think of my story?Jake:Well,I thought it was remarkable.Chris:Y ou promised not to laugh.Jake:I'm not laughing.Chris:Oh,you!Jake:Look out !Y ou'll break something.Jake:Y ou're getting better,Chris.It's still not news,but it's getting better.Chris:I think spring romance is interesting.Look at all the plays and movies about it.Jake:The subject is interesting,but it's not news,Chris.Who cares?Find a real story.Chris:Like what?Jake:OK.Y ou want to work on the Nature Center story?Look at the history of the Nature Center.How did it start?Why can a developer buy land right on the property?...I have a show to do.Lesson 9 Why does this deep happening?Rita:I talked to Bob Todd,the accountant,about my taxes.I don't know why I wait until the last minute every year.Terry:My taxes were done weeks ago.Rita:Well,you're so smart.I'm still filling in this form.What's your advice?Terry:My first advice is hurry up.The deadline is tomorrow.Rita:What do you think about joint tax-return forms?Terry:I don't like them.But I might make an exception.It's important to look at what kind of income your spouse has.Rita:What are you looking at?Terry:A mistake...Y ou didn't add these numbers up correctly.Reta:What do you mean?Terry:Look back at this page.Y ou have to fill in that number up here.Then you have to subtract it from the total.Rita:Why don't you do it?Terry:OK.Y ou fill in your name,your occupation,your Social Security number.Write down your income here.Rita:Is it better to type up the form or handwrite it?Terry:It doesn't really matter.But remember to run off a copy for yourself before you send it in. In other news,there was a fire at Scotto's Restaurant on Main Street.Firefighters were waiting for the smoke to clear before they looked for the cause.And it's that time again.Income taxes are due tomorrow.Time for fill out and send in your tax returns.We have as our guest tonight accountant,Robert Todd.Rita:Gray skies are gonna clear up,put on a happy face.Brush off the clouds and cheer up,put on a happy face.Take off the gloomy mask of tragedy,it's not your style.Y ou'll look so good that you'llbe glad,you decided to smile.Pick out a pleasant outlook,stick out that noble chin.Wipe off that full-of-doubt look,slap on a happy grin.And spread sunshine all over the place.Just put on a happy face....Rita:I'm on the air again.Terry:Oops,wrong tape.What is it?Rita:It's my singing and dancing lesson.How did they get that tape?Why does this keep happening?lesson 10 Raymond modine will be asking a lot of questions tomorrow.Steven:Look it over and tell me what you think.Jake:We're losing viewers.Steven:Our owner,Peter Case,will be broke in a month,Jake.Jake:Is the situation that bad?Steven:It's that bad.Peter Case will have to sell the station.Jake:There must be plenty of people out there who want to buy WEFL.Steven:First of all,if someone else buys it,there's no guarantee that you and I will still have jobs.And second - no one is going to buy it,Jake...not at the price he's asking.Especially if they find out that we're having technical difficulties.Jake:Technical difficulties!These aren't technical difficulties.Someone is deliberately trying to hurt usSteven:I think so too,Jake.I've called up a detective.His name is Raymond Modine and he'll be coming in tomorrow.My secretary will be handing out a letter to everyone at the station,explaining the situation.Jake:Is that a good idea?Steven:Raymond Modine will be asking a lot of questions tomorrow.Y ou'll be here,won't you?
