1.When I was a boy, there was but one permanent ambition among my comrades in our village

on the west bank of the Mississippi River. That was to be a steamboatman. We had transient ambition of other sorts, but they were only transient. When a circus came and went, it left us all burning to become clowns; the first negro minstrel show that came to our section left us all suffering to try that kind of life; now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates. These ambitions faded out, each in its turn; but the ambition to be a steamboatman always remained.

5. This creature’s career could produce but one result, and it speedily followed.Boy after boy managed to get on the river. The minister’s son became an engineer. The doctor’s and the post-maste r’s sons became ‘mud clerks’s; the wholesale liquor dealer’s son became a barkeeper on a boat;four sons of the chief merchant ,and two sons of the country judge, became pilots. Pilot was from a hundred and fifty to two hundred and fifty dollars a month ,and no board to pay.Two months of his wages would pay a preacher’s salary for a year. Now some of us were left disconsolate,We could not get on the river-at least our parents would not left us.

11.Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness and indulgence towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters, others are severe over times of coming home at night,; punctuality for meals or personal cleanliness. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child’s own happiness and well-being.

12.As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation fo r morality. Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are hypocritic al and do not practice what they preach, their children may grow confused and emotionally insecur e when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent d eceived. A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ethics and their morals an be a dangerous disillision.

2.One answer may be found within the college or university curriculum, through the simple but

extremely powerful pedagogical tool known as ‘service learning’.The basic idea behind service learning is to use a community or public service experience to enhance the meaning and impact of traditional course content . Connecting service directly with academic course makes it quite different from’volunteer’work that is performed in the community,Service learning also involves more than simply sending a class of students into communities for additional course credit.Properly designed service learning courses relate the community service experience to the course material and require that students reflect on their experiences through writings, discussions,or class presentations.Service learnng not only enriches traditional course content by giving the student an opportunity to ‘test’or ‘demonstrate’ abstract theory in the real world,it also improves the quality of the service being performed by giving it an intellectual underpinning

He is acknowledged as one of the architects of the modern public university — and, in particular, the American research university. In an era of unprecedented growth in American higher education, he recognized the distinct roles of community colleges, state universities and the ‘flagship’ research universities, and he coined the term “multiversity” in an attempt to capture the reality of large universities that had evolved to be a “whole series of communities and activities held together by a common name, a common governing board and related purposes,” reflecting the wisdom and thoughtfulness of one of America’s preeminent higher education specialists.

An old friend from California called from the airport to tell me that he had arrived.

Lesson 1 II. Translation Put the following passages into Chinese. 1. For English is a killer. It is English that has killed off Cumbric, Cornish, Norn and Manx. There are still parts of these islands where sizeable communities speak languages that were there before English. Yet English is everywhere in everyday use and understood by all or virtually all, constituting such a threat to the three remaining Celtic languages, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, and Welsh... that their long-term future must be considered... very greatly at risk. 2. He also associated such policies with a prejudice which he calls linguisticism (a condition parallel to racism and sexism). As Phillipson sees it, leading institutions and individuals within the predominantly "white" English-speaking world, have (by design or default) encouraged or at least tolerated—and certainly have not opposed—the hegemonic spread of English, a spread which began some three centuries ago as economic and colonial expansion. 3.By and large, we now view them as more or less benign, and often talk with admiration and appreciation about the cultures associated with them and what they have given to the world. And it is fairly safe to do this, because none of them now poses much of a threat. 4. Yet many people see English as a blessing. Let me leave aside here the obvious advantages possessed by any world language, such as a large communicative network, a strong literary and media complex, and a powerful cultural and educational apparatus. 5. English-speaking South Africans of British descent were not particularly strong in opposing the apartheid regime, and the black opposition, whose members had many languages, was at first weak and disorganized. 6. Such symbolism suggests that the users of the world's lingua franca should seek to benefit as fully as possible from the blessing and as far as possible avoid invoking the curse.
