And usually I would try and persist anyway, because I had already devoted so much time and energy and sometimes money into this field. But eventually this sense of boredom, this feeling of, like, yeah, I got this, this isn'tchallenging anymore -- it would get to be too much. And I would have to let it go.01:49 But then I would become interested in something else, something totally unrelated, and I would dive into that, and become all-consumed, and I'd be like, 'Yes! I found my thing,' and then I would hit this point again where I'd start to get bored. And eventually, I would let it go. But then I would discover something new and totally different, and I would dive into that.02:14 This pattern caused me a lot of anxiety, for two reasons. The first was that I wasn't sure how I was going to turn any of this into a career. I thought that I would eventually have to pick one thing, deny all of my other passions, and just resign myself to being bored. The other reason it caused me so much anxiety was a little bit more personal. I worried that there was something wrong with this, and something wrong with me for being unable to stick with anything. I worried that I was afraid of commitment, or that I was scattered, or that I was self-sabotaging, afraid of my own success.02:56 If you can relate to my story and to these feelings, I'd like you to ask yourself a question that I wish I had askedmyself back then. Ask yourself where you learned to assign the meaning of wrong or abnormal to doing many things.I'll tell you where you learned it: you learned it from the culture.03:21 We are first asked the question 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' when we're about five years old. And the truth is that no one really cares what you say when you're that age.03:30 (Laughter)03:31It's considered an innocuous question, posed to little kids to elicit cute replies, like, 'I want to be an astronaut,' or 'I want to be a ballerina,' or 'I want to be a pirate.' And at some point, 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' goes from being the cute exercise it once was to the thing that keeps us up at night. Why?04:08 See, while this question inspires kids to dream about what they could be, it does not inspire them to dream aboutall that they could be. In fact, it does just the opposite, because when someone asks you what you want to be, you can't reply with 20 different things, though well-meaning adults will likely chuckle and be like, 'Oh, how cute, but you can't be a violin maker and a psychologist. And this is Amy Ng, a magazine editor turned illustrator, entrepreneur, teacher and creative director. But most kids don't hear about people like this. All they hear is that they're going to have to choose. But it's more than that. The notion of the narrowly focused life is highly romanticized in our culture. It's this idea of destiny or the one true calling, the idea that we each have one great thing we are meant to do during our time on this earth, and you need to figure out what that thing is and devote your life to it.05:22 But what if you're someone who isn't wired this way? What if there are a lot of different subjects that you're curious about, and many different things you want to do? Well, there is no room for someone like you in thisframework. And so you might feel alone. You might feel like you don't have a purpose. And you might feel like there's something wrong with you. There's nothing wrong with you. What you are is a multipotentialite.05:51 (Laughter)05:53 (Applause)06:01 A multipotentialite is someone with many interests and creative pursuits. It's a mouthful to say. It might help if you break it up into three parts: multi, potential, and ite. You can also use one of the other terms that connote the same idea, such as polymath, the Renaissance person. Actually, during the Renaissance period, it was considered the ideal to be well-versed in multiple disciplines. Barbara Sher refers to us as 'scanners.' Use whichever term you like, or invent your own. I have to say I find it sort of fitting that as a community, we cannot agree on a single identity.06:40 (Laughter)06:44 It's easy to see your multipotentiality as a limitation or an affliction that you need to overcome. But what I've learned through speaking with people and writing about these ideas on my website, is that there are some tremendous strengths to being this way. Here are threemultipotentialite super powers.07:06 One: idea synthesis. That is, combining two or more fields and creating something new at the intersection. Sha Hwang and Rachel Binx drew from their shared interests in cartography, data visualization, travel, mathematics and design, when they founded Meshu. Meshu is a company that creates custom geographically-inspired jewelry. Sha and Rachel came up with this unique idea not despite, but because of their eclectic mix of skills and experiences. Innovation happens at the intersections. That's where the new ideas come from. And multipotentialites, with all of their backgrounds, are able to access a lot of these points of intersection.07:58 The second multipotentialite superpower is rapid learning. When multipotentialites become interested in something, we go hard. We observe everything we can get our hands on. We're also used to being beginners, because we've been beginners so many times in the past, and this means that we're less afraid of trying new things and stepping out of our comfort zones. As a society, we have a vested interest in encouraging multipotentialites to be themselves. To me, that sounds like the ideal career!篇5My Dream Job and Why My Parents Don't UnderstandEver since I was a little kid, I've known exactly what I want to be when I grow up - a professional wrestler! I watch wrestling all the time on TV and I'm just amazed by how strong and athletic those wrestlers are. I practice my moves on my bed, jumping off and body slamming my pillows. Sometimes I even put on a mask and cape and run around the house shouting my wrestling name "The Masked Marvel!"My parents just don't get it though. They keep telling me I need to think about getting a "real job" when I'm older. Something stable and respectable like being a doctor, lawyer, or business person. Whenever I tell them I'm going to be a wrestler, they just laugh and say "Sure kiddo, whatever you want." Like they don't believe me at all!But I'm totally serious. Being a wrestler is my biggest dream in the whole world. I can't imagine doing anything else with my life. I try to explain it to my parents, but they never really listen."Wrestling is so dangerous though," my mom always says with a worried look. "You could get seriously hurt out there in the ring." As if I don't already know wrestling can be rough! Of course I'll get a few bumps and bruises here and there. But those wrestlers are just so tough, nothing can keep them down for long.Then my dad chimes in with "Son, there's no real money in being a wrestler. How will you support a family some day?" Well for one, I've seen how much those wrestlers make - it's a ton! And I don't even care about money that much anyway. As long as I get to wrestle, I'll be happy.I keep trying to tell them how passionate I am about wrestling, but they just think it's a little kid's phase that I'll grow out of eventually. They want me to aim for something "more realistic." But wrestling is my reality! It's what I think about from morning until night.In my mind, I can see myself so clearly stepping through the curtain and into the bright lights of a massive arena. The crowd goes wild, cheering my name as I make my way to the ring. Maybe I'll even get to wear a championship belt some day! How awesome would that be?My parents envision me becoming a stuffy office worker in a suit and tie. But I want to be the one wearing colorful sparkly tights, a cool mask, and a long cape blowing behind me. I'll be the biggest superstar the wrestling world has ever seen! Just wait, I'll show them.For now though, I just have to be patient. I'm only 9 years old, so I've got a long way to go before I can actually become a professional wrestler. But I'm going to keep working on perfecting my moves and dreaming of my big wrestling future every single day. Wrestling IS my future, I just know it.Maybe when I'm older and my parents see how dedicated I still am, they'll finally start to understand this isn't just a littlekid's fantasy for me. It's my real passion in life that I want to achieve more than anything. If they could see how serious I am and how much I've thought it all through, I think they'd accept it. At least I hope so.Because no matter what they say or think, nothing is going to stop me from chasing my dream of being a wrestler. Their doubts and worries won't make me give up. I refuse to let them push me into some boring job I don't care about at all. Wrestling is what gets me excited to wake up each morning! It's my calling.I really wish my parents would be more supportive and encouraging of my aspirations instead of automatically shutting them down. Because this wrestling thing isn't just a silly phase for me. It's a huge part of who I am and who I want to become. I'm destined for those bright showbiz lights and wrestling glory!I hope that some day, maybe after I've achieved some success in the wrestling world, my parents will finally understand why I was so passionate and determined to become a wrestler all along. And hopefully then, they'll be cheering me on proudly from the crowd instead of trying to discourage my dreams.篇6When I Grow Up, I Want to Be...Ever since I was a little kid, I've known exactly what I want to be when I grow up – a professional soccer player! I love everything about soccer. The feeling of kicking that ball across the field, dribbling past defenders, and scoring an amazing goal is just the best. My heart races with excitement every time I'm on the pitch.My parents though, they have different ideas for my future career. Dad really wants me to become a doctor like him. He's always telling me how important and respected doctors are inour community. How they help people every single day and make a great living doing it. Mom agrees and thinks I'd make an excellent pediatrician since I'm so good with little kids.But every time they bring up me becoming a doctor, I get this sinking feeling in my stomach. Don't get me wrong, doctors are awesome and I'm really glad we have them. It's just that the thought of being stuck in some doctor's office or hospital all day doesn't appeal to me at all. I want to be outside, running around, playing the sport I love more than anything!Gran understands though. She always says I should follow my heart and my passion. She reminds me how she wanted to be a famous singer when she was young, but her parents made her become a teacher instead. Gran says she was a good teacher, but she wonders what could have been if she'd pursued her dream career in music. I don't want to have those same regrets when I'm a gran myself.I try to explain to Mom and Dad that soccer is my biggest passion and playing professionally is my biggest dream. But they just shake their heads and insist that a career as an athlete is too risky and unstable. They want me to have a secure, respectable job that will provide a good life. A pro soccer career just doesn't fit into their picture of that.It's really tough when your parents' idea of your future is so different from your own goals. Sometimes I wish they could just be more supportive and trust that I know what will make me happiest. Other times, a part of me wonders if they might be right and I should look at other career options that are less "risky."I go back and forth on it a lot. One day, I'm 100% convinced that I'll be a huge soccer star scoring game-winning goals to the roars of thousands of fans. Then the next day, doubts start creeping in about whether I'm really good enough to make it as a pro. What if I'm not? What if my parents are right and soccer isn't a dependable job? I'll be so disappointed and lost if that happens.For now though, I'm still holding onto my dream of a pro soccer career with both hands. My coaches say I have amazing talent and potential. I've already started getting letters from elite sports academies interested in recruiting me once I get to high school. Gran keeps encouraging me to ignore the doubters and naysayers.I really hope that someday, even if it takes me actually making it as a pro, my parents will accept and get behind my career choice. Having them in my cheering section would meaneverything. But either way, this is the path I've chosen because it's what I love and am passionate about. I have to bet on myself and go for it with my whole heart.Maybe I'll prove my parents right and become aworld-famous pediatrician after all. Or maybe they'll be going to soccer games to cheer on their daughter, living out her dream as a pro athlete. Only time will tell which way my path leads. But I'm going to walk it with my head held high, following my passion every step of the way. That's what I want for my life and career when I grow up.。
