Your greatest problem is that you lack self-confidence. The first thing you must do is to smile at your classmates. One smile speaks louder about your wish to make friends than any words. Your smile will show that you are friendly to them. Next, try talking with a student who is as shy as yourself or who shares the same interest as you. You can discuss your studies with a classmate, and you can also talk about your hobbies as well. If anyone is in trouble in life or study, you should be ready to help him or her. Once you have confidence, you can makeas many friends as possible. However, their textbooks are still in good condition. If we just ignore them, it is a great waste of money. Some people suggest that we should recycle the text-books and I quite agree with them, For one thing, there are millions of students studying in university, middle school and primary school in China. Itneeds a lot of paper made from wood to print new textbooks. If thegraduates leave their old textbooks for the new comers, a great many trees can avoid being cutting down. For another thing, making paper can cause huge pollution. Therefore, saving paper is an effective way to protect the environment. In addition, there are still many people in China living in poverty. The cost for new textbooks is a heavy burden for these poor students. Last but not least, some foreign countries, such as Australia has set a good example for us.In a word, we should pay more attention to protect our environment. And we can try our best to take part in the campaign.。

At the same time, many families have possessed their new cars. Besides, our country hosted the 29th Olympic Games successively in 2008. Another inspiring event was that the astronaut Zhai Zhigang in Shenzhou VII skillfully and smoothly carried out the world-famous space walk, which shows the great achievement of our scientific research. As in shown in the picture,we plant trees and we will enjoy the shade ourselves as well as our grandchildren. Everybody knows nature is to us what water is to fish.Yet we don’t realize it until it is too late. With the development of modern technology, there are more and more people on the earth and fewer and fewer resources left. What’s worse, pollution is getting more and more serious and the climate is becoming warmer and warmer. Therefore we should take measures to build a harmonious relationship between man and nature. On the one hand, in our daily life we can recycle water and turn off lights when necessary; while on the other hand, we can choose to use public transport rather than use private cars to reduce carbonemission. Speaking of consumption, we had better choose energy-saving goods and eat less processed food. Undoubtedly , there are still more for us to do to make a positive difference.IV. ALast weekend,Emma Zeiger,10, rode her bike ten miles in the pouring rain at the first annual Newton Needham Pan Massachusetts Challenge(PMC)Kids Ride. Nothing, not even bad weather, could stop her from making a difference. This June, Emma and thousands of other kids across the Northeast participated in nearly 30 PMC Kids Rides. PMC Kids Rides raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. Created ten years ago by Ryan Wilkinson, 17 , and his sister Hattie, 15, the rides are a more kid friendly version of the annual Pan Massachusetts Challenge. The Wilkinson family first got the idea to create a PMC Kids Ride in 1998 when Ryan, then 7, wanted to ride in the Pan Massachusetts Challenge.Ryan and Hattie’s grandmother had been diagnosed with a br ain tumor(肿瘤). “We were experiencing cancer for the first time,” Ryan said, “So that was on my mind when I said I wanted to ride.” Unfortunately, PMC participants have to be at least 15 years old to ride. Ryan was only seven. So, the Wilkinson family decid ed to start a children’s version of the PMC.In just a couple of weeks, the Wilkinsons organized the Wildwood Challenge, the very first Pan Massachusetts Challenge Kids Ride. Thirteen kids rode around a neighborhood block 25 times. They raised $1,600 for cancer research. On June 21, Ryan and Hattie will celebrate the eleventh annual Wildwood PMC Kids Ride.Since 1998, PMC Kids Rides have grown significantly. Every year, more and more kids participate. To raise money, kids do extra chores, babysit, host car washes, and send out letters asking for donations. “Every penny counts,” Hattie Wilkinson explains. “All of the money goes to a good cause. It’s really great to be able to ride for people with cancer and to represent them and raise money for them.” Since 1998, the Pan Massachusetts Kids Rides have raised more than $1 million for cancer research and treatment.1. For example, most of us remember our parents’ telling us to eat more of certain foods or not to do certain things. Is there any truth in these teachings? Some of them agree with present medical thinking, but others have not passed the test of time.Did your mother ever tell you to eat your carrots because they are good for your eyes? Scientists now report that eating carrots can help prevent a serious eye disease called macular degeneration. Eating just one carrot a day can reduce the possibility of getting this disease by 40%. Garlic(蒜)is good for you, too. It can kill the type of virus that causes colds.Unfortunately, not all of Mom’s advice passed the test of medic al studies. For example, generations of children have been told not to go swimming within an hour after eating. But research suggests that there is no danger in doing so. Do sweets cause tooth problems?Well, yes and no. Sticky sweets made with grains tend to cause more problems than sweets made with simple sugars.Even though science can tell us that some of our traditional beliefs don’t hold water, there is still a lot of truth in the old wives’ tales. The two of them worked as one----each needing the other to function in this fast-changing world. That little example of true strength that day changed my whole personal perception of life. The little games men and women play with each other while conversing would be lost. The question everyone asks himself or herself after talking with someone of the opposite sex,“I wonder if there’s something there?” would no longer exist.24.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to?A.The differences between men’s and women’s languages.B.The different speed of men’s and women’s spe ech.C.The ability of men’s and women’s spoken language.D.The nonverbal vocabulary of men and women.25.In what way do men and women differ according to the third paragraph? B.Favorable.C.Ambiguous. D.Skeptical.27.What is the best title for the text?A.Women,Born Excellent TalkersB.Men’s and Women’s Social RolesC.Vocabulary and CommunicationD.Opposite Gender,Different LanguageCRecently I and other Red Cross volunteers met a group of victims from Hurricane Katrina. We were there, as mental health professionals, to offer "psychological first aid" and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence. As we walked in the gate to the shelter, we were greeted with a burst of gratitude (感激) from the first person we met. I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadn’t really done anything yet.I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friend’s mother passed away unexpectedly. I had received a call saying she had just passed away. I wanted to rush down there immediat ely, but didn’t want to intrude (打扰) on this very personal period of sadness. I was torn about what to do. Another friend with me then said, "Just go. Just be there." I did, and I will never regret it.Since then, I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others. Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS — related dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware of others’ presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive. In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. In it, none of us are truly alone. It is not only something we give to others but also changes me for the better.28.Why were the hurricane victims grateful to the author?A. He built shelters for them.B. He gave immediate first aid to them.C. He came to stay with them.D. He brought mental health professionals.29.What did the author do when his friend’s mother pas sed away?A. He hesitated over whether to go.B. He went to his friends’ at once.C. Relaxing and delightful.D. Very serious and unhappy.31.What has the author learned from his experience?A. A friend in need is a friend indeed.B. Being present can make a big difference.C. The family harmony is the happiest thing in life.D. Being a volunteer can make one’s life more significant.DIf you're out for a walk and a bird in a tree says to you “Hello there!”,don't worry, you're not going mad.Naturalists have reported a growing phenomenon of pet parrots that have been taught to repeat phrases by their owners before escaping from their cages and then passing on the technique to the wild flocks they join. “Hello there!”“Hello darling!” and “What's happening?” are among the chorus of comments tha t flocks of wild birds have been repeating after picking up words and sentences from other birds that were once household pets.Naturalist Martyn Robinson said: “We've had people calling us thinking they've had something put into their drink because they've gone out to look at the flock of birds in their back yard and all the birds have been saying something like ‘Who's a pretty boy, then?’”Mr. Robinson, who is based at the Australian Museum in Sydney, said the usual sequence of events saw a caged parrot of some kind which had been taught phrases but had then made its escape. It would then join a wild flock and chatter away in the trees, its words being learned by younger birds in the flock. The older ones would be unlikely to start learning. When chicks are born, they hear the words being spoken by the older birds and grow up repeating the phrases. And so it continues, generation after generation.Mr. Robinson said that because of a drought in the western regions of New South Wales, flocks of wild bird “speakers” among them have been flying to Sydney, wheremore food is available, and have been hanging around suburban gardens. From the tree tops in gardens, from chimney pots and lamp posts, the flocks have been talking away, leaving many people wondering if their minds were playing tricks on them.“These birds are very smart and very social, meaning that communication and contact is important between them,” said Mr. Robinson. “I just hope a pet bird that's been taught dirty words doesn't join a flock because we don't want to hear that kind of thing going around the back gardens.”32.When people heard a flock of birds say “Hello there!”, they felt ________.A.there was something wrong with their mindsB.they had drunk some wineC.they were in a world of parrotsD.they heard people speaking33.Flocks of wild bird “speakers” have been flying to Sydney because ________.A.they are following some escaped pet parrotsB.it is easy for them to find food in SydneyC.there are fewer birds left in New South WalesD.they are on their way of migration34.We can learn from the passage that ________.A.parrots like to learn to speak human languageB.younger birds are most likely to learn the language from the escaped parrots C.parrots can learn to speak from each other, whether old or youngD.parrots flock together because they speak the same language35.What Mr. Robinson said in the last paragraph suggests that ________.A.a flock of parrots can only pick up some simple sentencesB.parrots cannot learn to say dirty wordsC.parrots can even pick up dirty wordsD.a pet parrot is forbidden to be taught dirty words第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

help the country’s economy. It is important to think about the people of a destination(目的地)country and how tourism affects them.Tourism should help a country keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists.Tourism should also advance the well being(health and happiness)of local inhabitants.Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer. On the other hand,if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs.Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals,first-class roads, and other support facilities(设施)needed by tourist attractions. For example,a major international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel will lose money.Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers(阴沟)to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.11.Which of the following has most probably been discussed in the paragraph that goes before the passage?A.It is extremely important to develop tourism.B.Building B.weaken their economyC.help establish their traditions D.help improve their lifeBI shook hands with my father in the truck, and for a long time he looked straight ahead and didn’t say a word. But I knew he was going to say a little to me.“I can’t tell anything,” he finally said.“I never went to college, and none of your brothers went to college.I can’t say don’t do this and do that, because everything is different and I don’t know what is going to come up.I can’t help much with money either, but I think things will work out.”He gave me a new check-book.“If things get pushing, write a small check. But when you write one, send me a letter and let me know how much. There are some things we can always sell.” In four years all the checks I wrote were less than a thousand dollars. My part-time jobs such as reading to the blind student and sitting with the teachers’ kids filled in the financial_gaps.“You know what you want to be,and they’ll tell you what to take,” my father went on.“When you get a job,be sure it’s honest, and work hard.” I knew that soon I would be alone in the big town, and I would be missing the cool winds and a life where your thinking was done for you. Then my dad reached down beside his seat and brought the old, broken Bible that he had read so often, the one he used when he wanted to look something up in a friendly quarrel with one of the neighbours.I knew he would miss it.I knew, though, that I must take it.He didn’t say I must read this every morning. He just said,“This can help you if you will let it.”Did it help?

AIs It Bad to Cross Your Legs When You Sit?Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it wh en they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won't feel any immediate effects, but if you sit for long periods of time it's important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldn't have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, and it's important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour.Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, it's best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor, but it's not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic bones to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck. You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get tingly or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins andnerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.21.According to para 2, we can infer that___________A.it's no big deal to cross our legs for less than 15 minutes.B.we will feel uncomfortable at the moment we cross the legs.C.we should take a walk every hour after sitting still.D.crossing legs while sitting makes it harder to circulate our blood.22.How many health problems can be caused by crossing legs according to the text?A. 2 B3 C.4 D. 523. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?A. ① B ① C. ① D. ①② ③ ② ③ ② ③ ④ ② ③④ ⑤ ④ ⑤ ⑤ ④ ⑤BColumbus Day has been on American calendars since 1937,when President Franklin D.Roosevelt declared October 12 a federal holiday to honor the Italian explorer who“discovered”the Americas in 1492.However,the holiday has always been controversial. Many people believe that Christopher Columbus should not be given credit for“discovering”the continent, since native Americans had already been living there for generations.Besides, the explorer,s mission was not a scientific“voyage of discovery”,but one intended to conquer the new land.Critics maintain that the Spanish army Columbus brought on his second voyage, caused the deaths of hundreds of thousandsof indigenous(土著的)people. Those that survived the massacre became slaves, working in mines. Many, therefore, believe that the explorer's arrival should not be celebrated. In 1977,a delegation of Native nations at the International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas, proposed renaming the holiday to“Indigenous People’s Day”.The proposal passed with a majority. However, convincing the rest of the country to do the same was not that easy.It took 15 years before the city of Berkeley in California adopted the name in 1992 and then 22 more years before Minneapolis,MN and Seattle,WA did the same in 2014.The following year, eight more cities including Albuquerque,NM and Portland,OR,began celebrating the second Monday of October as“Indigenous People’s Day”. The movement really started to gain momentum in 2016 when 19 cities, including Boulder,CO and Phoenix,AZ,as well as the states of Minnesota and Vermont,a11 decided to rename the day to honor Native Americans. In 2017,21 more cities, including Austin,TX and Los Angeles,CA have made the shih. With the increasingly larger number of cities moving away from Columbus Day each year,it will be interesting to see if“Indigenous People’s Day”gets federal recognition.Meanwhile,it will continue to be the focal point of debates throughout the Americas.24.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A.Indigenous People’s Day Has Got Federal Recognition after Years’Work B.Columbus Day Honoring the Italian Explorer Has Always Been Controversial C.Christopher Columbus Should Not Be Given Credit for Discovering Americas D.More Cities Have Replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day 25.Many people don’t agree that________.A.Indigenous discovered the continentB.Columbus was a remarkable explorerC.Native Americans were abusedD.Columbus Day is a public holiday26.What can we infer from the second paragraph?A.Columbus was well received by indigenous people.B.The indig enous people hated the Columbus’arrival.C.The Spanish army rebelled against Columbus’rule.D.Few soldiers survived the attack by native Americans.27.Which of the following cities is the earliest to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day?A.Portland. B.Phoenix. C.Seattle. D.Los Angeles.CRecently, Google announced that its voice-activated program, Google Assistant, will be offering a new feature called “Tell Me Something Good.” Users can now give that command and receive an earful of po sitive news stories. What’s more, the New York Times has a page online called “Fixes,” which focuses on what people are doing to fight social ills. As media researcher Karen McIntyre of Virginia Commonwealth University explains, these are all parts of a news movement called constructive journalism.Constructive journalism is different from “feel-good news,” like a fireman rescuing a cat. Instead, constructive journalism offers a more complete but appealing version of the news, says McIntyre. In her opinion, besides focusing on solutions, constructive journalism includes reporting on the historical and social setting of specific news incidents, using reliable data to look at longer-term trends, and avoiding interview techniques that create drama without increasing understanding. However, newspapers thrive on eyes on the page, and editors may be less interested in constructive journalism if they aren’t convinced that it’ll attract their readers. While McIntyre acknowledges those concerns, research has shown the opposite to be true. For example, one study found participants who read an online story that focused on approaches to poverty spent more time on the page than those reading a similar story without focusing on solutions. There is much we don’t know yet ab out how this kind of journalism affects behavior. The research is relatively young, though at least one of McIntyre’sstudies showed an interesting result: people who read inspiring news stories were more willing afterwards to sign up for generous actions related to the story, such as donating money to support a cause from the story. Therefore, she argues, there’sa hunger for this type of news.28. Why are Google Assistant and Fixes mentioned in the first paragraph?A. To say how the news movement works.B. To stress the importance of positive news.C. To show what constructive journalism is.D. To lead in the topic of the whole text.29. Constructive journalism encourages stories that__________.A. inform people of big events.B. are solution-focused.C. focus on amazing you.D. are based on interesting facts.30. How should constructive journalism stories be written?A. In a serious way.B. In a humorous way.C. In a usual way.D. In an understandable way.31. What may be the problem with constructive journalism?A. That it isn’t appealing to readers.B. That it isn’t easy to collect and edit.C. That it adds to some editors’ concerns.D. That it is unavailable to some readers.DCold weather during winter months may keep many people from leaving home and running in the open air. However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, researchers say, running in cold weather helps improve one's performance. Many people say running in the winter can be difficult. Two reasons are the low temperatures and bitter winds. Yet many runners might find it easier than running in hot weather. That could be because lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate and the body's dehydration (脱水) levels are lowerthan in warmer conditions. The body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather. This information comes from sports scientists at St. Mary’s University in London. John Brewer is a professor of applied sport science at St. Mary’s.For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room they called an “environmental chamber.” The researchers then recreated summer and winter weather conditions in the room. The test subjects were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions. Brewer says he and his team recorded biological measurements of the runners.“We've got a group of subjects into the environmental chamber, we've changed the conditions to replicate the summer or winter and we've got them to run a 10km under both of those conditions and taken various measurements on each runner while they've been completing their 10km.”Brewer says every movement runners make produces heat. He explains that one way in which we lose heat is by sweating. The body loses heat through droplets of sweat. He says the body also loses heat by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin.32.What can we know about running in winter?A.It increases pressure of the body. B.It improves the function of body. C.It makes your heart rate higher. D.It needs more water than in summer. 33.What can we know about the research according to the text?A.Researchers interviewed the subjects B.Subjects were asked to run in winter and summer.C.Subjects built the “environmental chamber”.D.Biological measurements of the runners were recorded.34.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “replicate” in Paragraph 7?A.Combine. B.Remember. C.Copy. D.Decorate.35.What’s the best title for the passage?A.Environmental Chamber B.The Way of Losing HeatC.Running in Cold Weather Improves Performance D.Biological Measurements of the Runners第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
