I got a taste of that dream in 2001,when my husband arranged for me to ride in a hot air balloon for my birthday. But the experience turned out to be very dull. Around that time ,I told my husband that I wanted to skydive. So when our retirement community(社区)announced that they were having an essay competition and the topic was an experience of a lifetime that you wanted to have, I decided to write about my dream. In the essay, I wrote about my desire to skydive, stating George Brush Sr. did it at age 80. Why not me? I was just 84 and in pretty good health. A year went by and I heard nothing. But then at a community party in late April 2009, they announced that I was one of the winners. I just couldn’t believe it. Inspired by this, I decided to realize my dream, even thou gh some of my family members and my doctor were against it.One June 11, 2009, nearly 40 of my family and friends gathered in the area close to where I would land while I headed up in the airplane. My instructor, Jay, guided me through the experience. The plane was the noisiest one I had ever been in, but I wasn’t frightened—I was really just looking forward to the experience. When we reached 13,000 feet, Jay instructed me to throw myself out of the plane. When we first hit the air, the wind was so strong that I could hardly breathe. For a second I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?” But then everything got calmer. We were in a free fall for about a minute before Jay opened the parachute(降落伞), then we just floated downward for about five minutes. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever felt—much better than the hot air balloon. I was just enjoying it.Skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of my life. I hope other people will look at me and rea lize that you don’t stop living just because you are 84 years old. If there’s something you want to experience, look into it. If it’s something that is possible, make it happen.11.What happened to the author in 2001? _____.A.She flew an airplaneB.She entered a competitionC.She went on a hot air balloon rideD.She moved into a retirement community12.The author mentioned George Bush Sr. in her essay to_____.A.build up her own reputation B.show her admiration for himC.compare their health condition D.make her argument persuasive 13.How did the author feel immediately after she jumped out of the plane? _____.A.Excited B.ScaredC.Nervous D.Regretful14.What did the author enjoy most when she was skydiving? _____.A.The beautiful clouds B.The wonderful viewC.The company of Jay D.The one-minute free fall15.What did I do on my birthday of 2011? _____.A.Ride in a hot air balloon B.Have a wonderful viewC.Have a party D.The one-hour free fallBeyond the Factory: Child Labor in the CitiesAt the beginning of the nineteenth century, factory owners faced few restrictions on the way they employed their children workers, who were between the age of 7 and 12. Gradually laws came into being. The first child-labor laws were passed at the state level in America and usually focused on both required education and a minimum age for employment. And added rules limited the length of the workday for children. Pennsylvania, for example, limited the workday to 10 hours for children under 12. However, government officials cared little whether businesses followed the law. In fact one group of children was left entirely unprotected by labor laws —the children of immigrant families.By the beginning of the twentieth century, piecework appeared, for which people were paid by the piece. Significant numbers of women sewed baby dresses or men's neckties and made the artificial flowers used to decorate hats. Piecework turned homes into factories that were free from the law, and countless children worked long hours alongside their mothers and old sisters.Manufactures exploited the system shamelessly and paid the lowest wages they could. Embroidering (刺绣) a silk dress, which was a 10-day job, might generate a five-dollar payment. In the case of "willowing", workers needed to add more strands to ostrich feathers used on hats to make them longer and more graceful. The first willowers were paid 15 cents per inch, but a few months later, the pay was reduced to 13 cents. Within three years, willowers were earning only three cents per inch.In order to survive under these circumstances, pieceworkers had even their youngest children help them. In one Italian neighborhood, a three-year-old girl helped her mother sew clothes. In another case, a child of eight who had lived in New Y ork for three years had never been to school at all and could speak almost no English. Slowly child labor laws brought these abuses to an end. 16.The first child-labor laws required _____.A.workplace safety and conditions B.minimum payment and ageC.education and working time D.minimum payment and schooling 17.Manufactures who hired women to do piecework _____.A.were kind and concerned employersB.were sometimes called "willowers"C.usually paid the lowest salaryD.forced children to turn home into factories18."Willowing" was a kind of _____.A.handwork activity B.workplaceC.payment requirement D.workers19.By raising the example of the three-year-old girl's experience in the last paragraph, the author intended to _____.A.show how poor the situations were for children workersB.blame those adult pieceworkers for allowing children to workC.attract attention to protect young childrenD.emphasize the importance of educating young children20.Which of the following sentences best summarizes the passage? _____A.The first child-labor laws were limited due to working at the state level.B.Early child-labor laws offered no protection to children who worked at home.C.Some immigrant children did not learn English because of their piecework.D.Child-labor laws should have come into being before children became workers.Part III. It makes you feel better to know you will get some medicine. But the doctor knows that medicine is not always needed. Sometimes all a sick person needs is some reassurance that all will be well. In such cases the doctor may prescribe a placebo(安慰剂). A placebo is a sugar pill, a harmless shot, or an empty capsule. Even though they have no medicine in them, these things seem to make people well. The patient thinks it is medicine and begins to get better. How does this happen?.Part IV. When German soldiers occupied his hometown ,the thriving city of Tarow, Poland, he refused to obey them and eventually joined the Soviet army to fight for his country’s freedom . “Stand straight, stand tall,” he told himself. After the war, in 1947, he boarded a boat for Manhattan. He was hungry and suffering from seasickness. All alone in a new country, he was frightened about his future .Still, he marched head-on into the hustle and bustle of the streets of New York . Soon he met other European immigrants, each of them trying to find his or her own way .If they could do it, why couldn’t he? “Stand straight, stand tall,” he would remind himself. Thanks to the help of a loyal and trusting friend, my grandfather gained a jewelry booth on Canal Street, New York City .He once told me how nervous he was on that first day of work. He was not only trying to learn this tough new business, but also a new language. To his surprise, the men in neighboring booths—who could have taken advantage ofhim—offered their help and advice. Within months, my grandfather was commanding his spot behind the counter, selling diamonds and cultured pearls as if he’d been doing it his whole life.Stand straight and stand tall.In later years, my grandfather would take both my mother and her sister down the aisle at their weddings. As he stood with each of them, he thought about their new beginnings, and of the adventures and journeys they would experience together .He also thought about the children who would one day carry on his family name.I am so proud to be one of those children. Listening to my grandfather’s remarkable experiences has changed the way I view my own life.1.Which is the correct order of the things that happened in the passage?a. My grandfather took both my mother and her sister down the aisle at their weddings.b. World War II broke out in Europe.c. My grandfather went to America.d. If you give and give without making time to fill your own needs, then it’s likely you will burn out , or feel upset .When you take and take without giving anything back ,you never feel fulfilled, so you are always searching for ways to fill the void in your life. The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving is to know and then live by your values .I break values up into two groups which I call being and having values. Your being values are the character traits of the ideal person you would like to be. I suggest to my clients that they choose three being values that they are willing to make a commitment to live by. An example of some being values are: kind, loving, generous, inspirational, peaceful, wise and even powerful. By acting on these values you give to others through your actions and you inspire others by being a positive role model. Mastering being these character traits becomes your life purpose.Your having values are the feelings you need to create in order to be happy. These could be companionship, achievement, support, being valued or financial security. This is what you receive. You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelings and conditions in your life. When you make a commitment to live by your being values, it becomes easier to make conscious choices rather than reactionary ones. If your usual pattern is to talk about your problems, you could choose to think and act like a calm person . A calm person might go for a walk ,meditate, or set a time limit before responding. If your usual pattern is to worry, you could choose to act like a responsible or wise person. In other words, you would act like the person you choose to be—this is the key to personal power. When you choose to act on your values , you not only feel good about yourself, you reinforce your chosen beliefs. Over time acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turn the way other people think of you.5.The main purpose of this passage is to .A.persuade the readers to make a commitmentB.explain to the readers what personal values areC.inform the readers how to be truly happyD.instruct the readers how to make wise choices6.According to the text ,living by your being values ,you would .A.gain a lot of power B.form positive personalityC.seek all human virtues D.fill your own needs7.The underlined word “void” in Paragraph 1 means .A.a feeling of emptiness B.an absence of one’s mindC.a break of continuity D.a state of confusion8.What can be inferred from the text?A.Having values are better than being values.B.A calm person does not choose to complain.C.The way other people think of you decides who you are.D.A responsible person does not care about financial security.Passage 3The words “timetable” and “schedule” make most final year students want to eat their own vomit. Unfortunately, the harsh reality is that final year students must develop a timetable. If you don’t have a schedule or plan for studying, you will have no way of allocating your valuable time when the unexpected arises. A well-thought-out timetable can be a lifesaver. It is up to you to learn how to develop a schedule that meets your needs .Change it if necessary, but most important ,follow it . All timetables should be made with the idea that they can be changed. A good one will keep you from wandering off course.A good timetable should make every hour count—every class ,social event and other activity you engage in .You must focus on the other “free time” available and how you will use it .Make a weekly schedule and divided each day into one-hour increments .Indicate times for classes ,socializing ,and work time. Also block off a period for sleeping every day. In the precious hours left over, plan time for study .This gives you a rough road map of the time available. Of course, you can change your schedule as circumstances need. The timetable you develop should guide you in how to distribute the available time in the most productive manner .Sticking to your schedule can be tough ,but don’t dribble away valuable time. Avoiding study is the easiest thing in the world .It is up to you to follow the schedule you’ve prepared .A good deal of your success in high school and with any future study depends on this simple truth.Remember, there is a learning curve. You learn the most in the first 30 minutes of study; after that ,it progressively deteriorates. After four or five hours of studying the same material in the same way, you are learning virtually nothing. The solution is to keep switching subjects and study styles.9.What is the best title of the passage?A.Advantages of starting a timetable B.Keep to it ,and you will succeedC.Make a schedule ,and follow it D.Learn to love your timetable10.What does Paragraph 2 talk about?A.Tips for making a schedule. B.Significance of a scientific timetable.C.Requirements for making a timetable. D.Importance of following one’s schedule. 11.The following are characteristics of a good timetable EXCEPT that .A.it can be changed B.it is flexibleC.it is of many periods D.it can save our time12.From this passage, we can learn if we wish to achieve high learning efficiency, we’d better __________.A.shift subjects and use different methods regularlyB.devote to the same material continuouslyC.turn to teachers for help if necessaryD.have a break every thirty minutesPassage 4The decision to enter F1 and compete at the highest level of motorsport was an intended move by Toyota, the world’s third largest auto manufacturer, to further challenge its own capabilities. By going head-to-head with the industry’s top performers on the world’s premier racing stage, the Japanese giant was setting itself a huge task. A sport with an enormous international following, the risks of entering the F1 arena are high—but there are rich rewards for those who succeed .Besides being a showcase for state-of-the-art technology, the intense competition in this most demanding of racing disciplines leaves no room for self-satisfaction. More importantly, it fosters the kind of forward-thinking team spirit that Toyota is seeking. While F1 benefited greatly from the added prestige of having such a distinguished newcomer among its competitors ,the demands placed on Panasonic Toyota Racing last year revealed the shortcomings of not having enough experience as a team .Mistakes were made and valuable lessons were learned ,among which was the fundamental truth: “To stand still in F1 is to go backwards.”With the past in mind, preparations for the 2003 season included sweeping changes on both the technical and personnel sides. The management at Toyota Motorsport GmbH was restructured, with John Howett moving from Toyota Motor Marketing Europe to become President, thus enabling the company founder, Oven Andersson ,more time to concentrate on the operation of the race team at the track. Andersson’s value as an inspirational leader was one of the team’s biggestassets in 2002.13.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?A.To go backwards,Toyota has to stand still.B.If Toyota doesn’t make improvements, they will fall behind.C.Keeping calm will help go forward.D.In order to keep up with other teams,Toyota has to stand still.14.We can learn from the passage that .A.Toyota entered F1 to enlarge its market.B.Entering F1 is low risk but rich rewarding.C.Toyota team has always been experienced.D.Toyota made good preparations for the 2003 season.15.What will the next paragraph talk about if the passage goes on?A.Preparations for the 2003 season.B.The value of Ove Andersson.C.How to improve the European market.D.Changes on technical side.Passage 5The oldest forms of medicine are enjoying a comeback .Modern holistic medicine is an approach that treats the whole patient ,not just the disease .It is a way to maintain good health rather than cure illness .The most important influences on today’s holistic medicine are ancient Chinese medicine and Indian Ayurvedic medicine, both of which promoted whole body health.Holistic medicine usually combines diet ,physical exercise and meditation, together with other alternative techniques such as massage and acupuncture .Herbal treatment ,a practice of treating illness by using plants, is influenced by the writings of Culpeper as well as Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Homeopathy is one of the forms of holistic medicine which is widely practiced in Europe and the USA .Homeopathy began in Germany in the early 1800s, when Samuel Hahnemann bescribed how very tiny doses of a drug had an effect on his patients .According to Hahnemann, the more the drug was diluted ,the stronger its effects .The substance selected would produce similar effects to the disease itself if given in large doses. In the UK homeopathy is regarded as a non-traditional but just about acceptable treatment.Meditation and contemplation have an important role in holistic medicine. They were brought to Europe by Indian teachers who combined Indian Ayurvedic medicine with Western beliefs. Transcendental meditation is one of the best known of these techniques .People repeat words inside their head to reach a state of deep relaxation. The holistic movement has made many doctors look at the whole patient, not just the disease .Life-style,emotional problems and diet are just some of the factors that can affect a person’s health . Holistic medicine emphasizes good diet, exercise and fresh air, all of which contribute to health .Some clinics now offer holistic medicine along with traditional treatments ,so that their patients can choose a combination of treatments that suits them. One problem with holistic medicine is that it is difficult for people to be sure a doctor is reliable. To solve this, many countries want alternative doctors to form professional bodies.16.Modern holistic medicine centers upon .A.curing a disease B.herbal treatmentC.continuous development D.keeping patients healthy 17.Which of the following does NOT belong to holistic medicine?A.massage B.meditationC.a balanced diet D.a knee operation18.The principle of homeopathy is that .A.the large doses of medicine that will not be harmful will take better effectB.the disease will be cured sooner by taking larger doses of medicineC.a small thinner dose of medicine will be more effectiveD.the doses of medicine depend on how serious the illness is19.Which of the following titles best sums up the passage?A.Holistic Medicine B.Traditional Medicine ReturnsC.History of Medicine D.Combination of Treatments Works 20.What can we infer from the passage?A.Relaxation is the key of holistic treatment.B.Holistic medicine needs to become more trustworthy.C.Holistic treatment is more beneficial than traditional treatments.D.Holistic medicine will become the most welcome treatment soon.Key:Part I.Unit 11.discourage dropping out2.I’m grateful that they did.3.threaten to drop out of high school4.offer you the best chance to learn broadly5.learn a huge range of subjectsnguage or other subjects7.claim that you never finished high school 8.math, history, various sciences9.
