If the Elvis hair cut was the big secret, then that’s what I was going to get.A11 the way to town I told everybody, including the matron(女管家)from the orphanage who was taking us to town, that I was going to look just like Elvis Presley and that I would learn to move around just like he did and that I would be rich and famous one day, just like him. When I got my new Buster Brown shoes, I could hardly wait for my new hair cut and now that I had my new Busier Brown shoes I would be very happy to go back to the orphanage and practice being like Elvis. We finally arrived at the big barber shop, where they cut our hair for free because we were orphans(孤儿).I looked at the barber and said,―I want an Elvis hair cut. Can you make my hair like Elvis?‖I asked him, with a big smile on my face.―Let's just see what we c an do for you, little man,‖he said.I was so happy when he started to cut my hair.Just as he started to cut my hair, the matron signed for him to come over to where she was standing. She whispered something into his ear and then he shook his head, like he was telling her ―No‖.Then he told me they were not allowed to give us Elvis hair cuts. Then I saw my hair falling onto the floor.21.In the author’s eyes,Elvis Presley was_________.A.disgusting B.admirable C.ambitious D.dynamic22.From the passage,we can know that______________.1A.Buster Brown was more appealing than Elvis PresleyB.An Elvis hair cut cost the orphans a lot of moneyC.The matron did not want the boy to have an Elvis hair cutD.The barber was unwilling to give the boy an Elvis hair cut23.We can learn from the underlined sentence that the boy was______.A.excited to have an Elvis hair cutB.worried to think about the secretC.anxious to remove the ton of bricksD.careful to seize the chance24.How would the boy probably feel when he walked out of the barber shop?A.Delighted.B.Guilty.C.Self-satisfied.D.Depressed.BIt is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. And at first sight, it looks like the easiest. Competitors have to do two things. The first is to stand still. The second is to place their hands anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there. This is where things start getting difficult. Lots of people are doing the same thing. And the winner of the ―handathon‖ contest is the person who ca n carry on doing it for the longest time. That person gets to own the car.It still seems to be an easy thing to do. At the beginning it is. Anyone can stand still. But when the contest has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world. And keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act ofserious attention. After a few days, the hand seems to belong to someone else—someone who wants to go home and get some sleep.2Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is necessary. No one is allowed to lean on the car for support. Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. They also need to be able to develop special skills.Maybe the popularity of the handathon is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter. Entrants in the Longview handathon certainly don’t seem to do much preparation. Most say they will prepare by ―getting lots of sleep‖. Others say they will―eat healthy food‖ or ―pray for success‖. The whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something in the end.Handathons are competitions, but there is little rivalry(敌对)between competitors. They help each other out and keep each other’s spirits up. People who drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement.25. The reason why the sport is called ―handathon‖ is that competitors.A. cover a long distanceB. keep one hand in place for longC. wave hands as long as possibleD. do the same thing as in a marathon26. What ability is likely to be needed most in a handathon?A. Standing without any support.B. Not leaning on the car.C. Eating and drinking in five minutes.D. Having strong powers of attention.27. Why is handathon popular?A. Someone can win with special training.B. It doesn’t need to make any preparation.3C. Anyone who is interested can join in it.D. People get along well with each other in it.28. Which of the following about handathon is NOT right?A. The person who takes part in it should stand still.B. The person who takes part in it has to place his hands anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there.C. The person who takes part in it can have a break during the course of the competition.D. Handathons are competitions, so competitors don’t encourage each other.CFilm director James Cameron first became interested in sea exploration when he was a little boy. A person could get some fresh air, listen to some music, or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things.Remember that our fearful thoughts are made to seem worse and can make the problem worse. 38 When unexpectedly having thoughts that make you fearful or anxious, challenge these thoughts by asking yourself positive questions that will maintain objectivity and common sense.Be smart in how you deal with fears and anxieties. Do not try to deal with everything all at once. When facing a current or upcoming task that makes you anxious, break the task into small ones. 39Remember that all the worrying in the world will not change anything. Most of what you worry about never comes true. 40 Then you should leave7everything else in the hands of God.It is not easy to deal with all the fears and worries. When your fears and anxieties have the best of you, try to calm down and then get the facts of the situation. The key is to take it slow. All you can do is doing your best each day, hope for the best, and when something does happen, take it easy. Take it one step at a time and things will work out well at last.A. When feeling anxious, stop what you are doing and try to do something relaxing.B. This will give you the confidence to manage your anxiety.C. Instead of worrying about something that probably won’t happen, concentrate on what you are able to do.D. The next time you fell depressed, review your list and think about the good things that you have in your life.E. A good way to manage your worry is to challenge your negative thinking with positive statements and realistic thinking.F. In addition, our worries can change our understanding of what is reality and what is not.G. 2016届高三上学期期中考试英语试题

2015-2016学年度上学期考试第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)AWho’s in control of your life? Who is pulling your string? For the majority of us, it’s other people—society, colleagues, friends, family or our religious community. We learned this way of operating when we were very young, of course. We were brainwashed. We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us. As Oscar Wilde puts it, “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry(模仿), their passions a quotation.”So when people tell us how wonderful we are, it makes us feel good. We long for this good feeling like a drug. Therefore, we are so eager for the approval of others that we live unhappy and limited lives, failing to do the things we really want to. Just as drug addicts and alcoholics live worsened lives to keep getting their fix (一剂毒品). We worsen our own existence to get our own constant fix of approval. But, just as with any drug, there is a price to pay. The price of the approval drug is freedom—the freedom to be ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think. People have their own agenda, and they come with their own baggage and, in the end, they're more interested in themselves than in you. Furthermore, if we try to live by the opinions of others, we will build our life on sinking sand. Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions allthe time. The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting exhausted and probably pleasing no one in the process. So how can we take back control? I think there’s only one way—make a conscious decision to stop caring what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values---not values imposed(强加)from the outside by others, but innate values which come from within. If we are driven by these values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others, we will live a more authentic, effective, purposeful and happy life.21.What Oscar Wilde says implies that _____________.A. most people’s thoughts are controlled by othersB. most people have a variety of thoughtsC. we have thoughts similar to those of othersD. other people’s thoughts are more important22.What does the author try to argue in the third paragraph ?A. Although the drivers also complained about the withdrawal of the fuel subsidy by the government, their main complaint was the loss of business because of the rising number of Internet-based car services companies. On Wednesday, news reports came that Beijing transport authorities will take measures to stop the illegal “taxi business” of private cars through the newly rising Internet apps, following the footsteps of Shenyang and Nanjing. It is not yet clear how the Shenyang city government will handle the issue and whether it will declare the services offered by market leaders such as Didi Dache, a taxi-hiring app provider backed by Tencent Holdings, and Kuaidi Dache illegal. But Shanghai transport regulators have set a rule, by banning Didi Zhuanche, or car services offered by Didi Dache in December.Such regulations will cause a setback to the car-hiring companies and investors that are waiting to cash in on the potentially booming business. Just last month, Didi Dache got $700 million in funding from global investors, including Singapore state investment company Temasek Holdings, Russian investment company DST Global and Tencent. Besides, the market is uncertain that Kuaidi Dache is about to finalize its latest round of funding after getting $800 million from global investors.Regulatory uncertainties, however, could cast a shadow on the future of theInternet-based car-hiring services, which have become popular in most of China’s big cities. To be fair, these companies’ business model is anything but bad. For example, Didi Zhuanche works side by side with established car rental companies to provide high-end car service mainly for businesspeople through the Internet and mobile phone apps.Every link in this business model chain has legal companies and services. Hence, it is hard to define it as illegal and ban it.28.Why did taxi drivers in Shenyang block the streets with their vehicles?A. Because they wanted the authority to increase their driving allowances.B. Because they wanted to be taught how to use the taxi-hiring apps.C. Because they wanted to make their main complaints known to the authority.D. Because they wanted to appeal to passengers not to hire the private cars.29.The author’s attitude to banning internet car-hiring service is______.A. positiveB. negativeC. neutralD. unclear30.Which of the following statements is false according to the passage?A. The problem referred to in the passage exists in all citiesB. App-based car rental is functional to some degreeC. The government should regulate the app-based car rental marketD. Didi Dache is a China-foreign joint company31.we can learn from the passage that _____.A. Shenyang forbade apps-based car rental companiesB. Shanghai is the second city banning Didi ZhuancheC. some international investment companies have strong faith in the future of apps-basedcar rental companiesD. it is not difficult to picture the apps-based car rental companies illegalDGenerally speaking, government regulations normally ban anything from smoking in public places to parking in certain zones. But officials in the Brazilian town of Biritiba Mirim, 70km (45miles) east of Sao Paulo, have gone far beyond that. They plan to prohibit residents from dying early because the local cemetery(墓地) has reached full capacity. There’s no more room to bury the dead, they can’t be cremated(火化) and laws forbid a new cemetery. So the mayor has proposed a strange solution: outlaw death. Mayor Roberto Pereira says the bill is meant as a protest against federal regulations that prohibit new or expanded cemeteries in preservation areas. “They have not taken local demands into consideration”, he claims.A 2003 decree(法令) by Brazil’s National Environment Council forbids burial grounds in protected areas. Mr. Pereira wants to build a new cemetery, but the project has been stoppedbecause 98% of Biritiba Mirim is considered as a preservation area.Biritiba Mirim, a town of 28,000 inhabitants, not only wants to prohibit residents from passing away. The bill also calls on people to take care of their health in order to avoid death. “I haven’t got a job, nor am I healthy. And now they say I can’t die. That’s ridiculous,” Amarido do Prado, an unemployed resident said. The city council is expected to vote on the regulation next week. “Of course the bill is laughable, illegal, and will never be approved,” said Gilson Soares de Campos, an assistant of the mayor. “But can you think of a better r esolution to persuade the government to change the environmental decree that is prohibiting us from building a new cemetery?” The bill states that “offenders will be held responsible for their acts.” However, it does not say what the punishment will be.32.What is the bill to be proposed by the officials in Biritiba Mirim?A. Ban on building a new cemetery.B. Ban on parking in certain zones.C. Forbidding buried grounds in preservation.D. Prohibiting residents from dying early.33.What can we infer from t he phrase “have gone far beyond that” in the first paragraph?A. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have made these regulations.B. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have been to many places around the world.C. The bill to be proposed by officials in Biritiba Mirim is much too unexpected.D. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have built too many cemeteries in their town. 34.What’s the attitude of the mayor of Biritiba Mirim towards the federal regulations?A. He remains silent about them.B. He gives strong backing to them.C. He objects to them.D. He asks the residents for advice on them.35.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?A. The mayor of the town wants to build a new cemetery against federal regulation.B. The residents of the town sing high praise for the bill.C. No better resolution of the problems has been thought out.D. The government is going to change the environmental decree.第二节七选五 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分l0分)A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. AChina’s economy grows, salaries rise;and more city residents feel the need to hit the roadin what has become a symbol of individuality and freedom—a car.China has a growing love affair with the car. This is clear at the Beijing Asian Games Village Automobile Exchange, where more and more people come to look and, increasingly,to buy.The Asian Games Village Automobile Exchange is the biggest car dealership in Beijing.General manager Guo Yong says the business sells more than 2,000 cars each week.Guo says it is much easier for Chinese consumers to buy a car now. Also, the emergence of less expensive domestic brands like Chery and BYD means more Chinese can afford cars. For decades, most Chinese city residents have got about by bicycle or public buses and trains. Now,in many areas, the number of new cars is growing faster than the road system, leaving city streets jammed with traffic.Guo Liang has wanted to buy a car for a decade, and he will be the first in his family to own one.He is not prevented by Beijing’s traffic jams.Guo says if the traffic is too bad,he will use the ear for leisure or holidays with his family.World Bank transportation specialist Shomik Mendhiratta says a car is something people in any society would be eager to own.“Getting a car makes people feel like they have arrived in the middle class.”Mendhiratta said.“It has got a huge status associated with it.It’s a fantastic thing to have,if you have never had a car.A car gives you a mobility that’s unbelievable.”21.Which of the following doesn’t a car represent, according to the passage?
