亚哈担起了进击自然的使命，它赢得了所有勇敢的人的尊敬和爱戴，他招致在自然面前缩首缩脚的懦弱的人的恐慌甚至憎恨。
于是，人类自身的矛盾产生了，并且一步步加剧，仅次于人与自然的矛盾。
人类在征服自然的过程中，必须解决好内部的矛盾，必须克服自身的种种弱点，只有这样，才能在与自然的较量中获得成功。
亚哈船长剿灭白鲸的过程包括了以上种种的因素。
“裴廓德号”是人类社会本身的一个高度概括，是那个年代人类状态的一个缩影。

莫比·迪克是一种自然力量的象征，是同样强大的自然的一种具体体现。
自然由强大的莫比·迪克和无数个平庸的其他组成，正像人类由强大的亚哈和无数个平庸的斯达巴克、斯塔布和弗拉斯克组成一样。
自然是丰厚和大度的，它是人类的依靠，是人类赖以生存的宝库，是人类的衣食父母，失去了它，人类将不复存在。
