Managers.BLaura Sides was a psychology major at the University of Nottingham in 2004. She first noticed signs of her dad’s developing dementia(痴呆) when she moved to Nottingham. She said, “Da d was a doctor, so he knew exactly what had happened to him, but people try to hide it when they are ill. Then, I came home for my 21st birthday and arranged to meet him, but he never showed up as he’d forgotten. That’s when I knew something serious had ha ppened.”So, aged 21, she decided to leave university and look after him herself. She lived close by, popping in every day to make surehe was eating, and that the house was tidy, before heading off to her work.Besides challenging moments, there was a time when looking after her dad was a pure joy. “We’d wake up, I’d ask what he wanted to do that day, and however ridiculous the adventure is, off we’d go.”Sadly, in 2009, 5 years later, Laura lost her father. Before he died, Laura went to a hospital appointment with him, where doctors mentioned that his form of Alzheimer’s disease was genetic meaning there was a fifty-fifty chance that she had inherited it. For several years Laura agonised over whether to be tested, finally finding out in August 2017 that she has the APP gene, meaning that, like him, she will develop the condition within a decade. At first, she struggled, feeling as if her life lacked purpose. Then, during a sleepless night in the summer of 2018, she decided at around 2 a.m. to enter the 2019 London Marathon sponsored by the charities Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK.100%Satisfaction GuaranteeYour purchase of National Geographic Kids is backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you (or your recipient) are not completely satisfied with your magazine, let us know and we will do whatever it takes to make it right—even a 100%cash refund(退款) if you choose. She hoped to start the conversation around early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and to encourage people to talk about it more ope nly. “I remember when Dad was ill, people wouldn’t know how to react, but I want to be honest and open,” she added. “The more information we can get, the less of a taboo(忌讳) we will feel. That said, the support I’ve received so far after going public has been amazing—that’s what is carrying me through.”24. Laura started the open talk in the hope of .A. getting people to talk about Alzheimer’s disease openlyB. earning some money to help treat her Alzheimer’s diseaseC. making herself stronger to fight against Alzheimer’s diseaseD. raising funds for charities Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s disease Research UK27. Which words can best describe Laura?A. Caring and positive.B. Careful and honest.C. Patient and cautious.D. Devoted and modest.CAccording to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, 33 percent of coral reefs(珊瑚礁) are in danger. One of thevictims is the Great Barr ier Reef in Australia, the world’s largest coral reef system.A team of British and Australian scientists banded and came up with a solution to revive one of the world’s seven natural wonders. They used underwater loudspeakers to attract fishes to the dead coral reefs to help them restore. The groundbreaking process is known as “acoustic(声音的) enrichment”.Loudspeakers are placed on patches of dead corals in the Great Barrier Reef. After careful observation, researchers discovered a favorable result—nearly twice as many fish arrived—and stayed, as compared to parts where there was no sound from speakers.“Healthy coral reefs are remarkably noisy places—the crackle of snapping shrimp and the whoop of fish combine to form a biological soundscape. Young fish home in on these sounds when they’re looking for a place to settle.” said Professor Steve Simpson at the University of Exeter.Reefs become quiet when they are decarded(退化), as the shrimps and fish disappear. “By using loudspeakers to restore this lost sounds cape, we can attract young fish back again,” Simpson added. “Fish are crucial for coral reefs to function as healthy ecosystems…Boosting fish populations in this way could help kick-start natural recovery processes, counteracting(抵消) the damage we’re seeing on many coral reefs around the world.” he said.Despite this groundbreaking discovery, we still have our work cut out for the preservation of coral reefs. The average water temperatures are rising, and problems such as overfishing and pollution are still among the pressing issues at hand. Also, further research is still needed to understand how loudspeakersinfluence the behavior of aquatic(水中) creatures fully.Nevertheless, hope is still visible for the degraded coral reefs. The authors of the acoustic enrichment study remain to be optimistic in the power of music and sound to restore the reef’s abundant marine population.28. How does “acoustic enrichment” function according to the text?A. By scaring the enemy of fishes.B. By making degraded reefs noisier.C. By appealing to young fishes.D. By making fishes multiply faster.29. What does Prof Simpson think of bringing fish back?A. It can help rebuild the coral reefs’ ecosystem.B. It can benefit the other lives in the ocean.C. It can make the ocean noisier and cleaner.D. It can improve the food chains of the ocean.30. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?A. The research has achieved a complete success.B. It is tough to restore the damaged coral reefs.C. Global winning is the biggest reason for reef victims.D. Music and sound benefit endangered animals.31. What is the text mainly about?A. The threats coral reefs face nowadaysB. The world’s biggest coral reef systemC. Various reasons why corals are threatenedD. A novel approach to degraded coral reefsDClaude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Leonardo da Vinci ... the art world has never lacked talent. And now,a new painter is ready to join the list, although this one isn’teven human.Next month, auction house(拍卖行) Christie’s Prints and Multiples will make history by offering the first piece of art created by artificial intelligence for sale. The painting is a portrait of a man called Edmond De Belamy, and is expected to be sold for up to $10,000 (69,000 yuan). The work, which features a man with a mysterious look on his face, was created by software developed by the French art group Obvious. Laugero-Lasserre, an art collector from France, called the work “ridiculous and amazing at the same time”. This isn’t the first example of AI-produced artwork, as AI has already been used to write poems and compose songs. However, many people doubt whether it should be called art at all.According to Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, art is about creating emotion. It’s “a means of … joining people together in the same feelings”, he once said. So, if the emotion behind art is what makes the art, the ability to create and use tools is what makes human beings different from other species. And as a tool itself, the AI technology used to create the portrait is the result of a lot of effort made by several designers. Together, they “fed” the AI a huge collection of paintings from the 14th to the 18th centuries, until it was able to work out how to make similar paintings of its own.The introduction of AI art could be the beginning of a new artistic movement. However, not everyone is ready to welcome these high-tech artists just yet.32. Why are Monet, Picasso and da Vinci mentioned at the beginning of the passage?A. To list world famous talented artists.B. To introduce a new painter as great as them.C. To show the prosperity of the art world.D. To highlight the inhuman painter by contrast.33. Why does the painting mentioned in Paragraph 2 gain special concern?A. It’s the first AI-produced artwork for sale.B. It’ll be auctioned in a famous auction house.C. It’s the portrait of a man with mysterious look.D. Its auction price is expected to be the highest.34. Which of the following statement may Leo Tolstoy agree with?A. AI technology is a tool for artistic creation.B. AI is taught to express human emotions in art.C. AI copied paintings of the14th-18th centuries.D. AI art joins people together in the same feelings.35. What might be the future of the new artistic movement?A. Popular.B. Unclear.C. Predictable.D. Unacceptable.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AHomestay provides English language students with the opportunity to speak English outside the classroom and the experience of being part of a British home. What to ExpectThe host will provide accommodation and meals. Rooms will be cleaned and bedcovers changed at least once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help and advice as well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health.Accommodation ZonesHomestays are located in London mainly in Zones 2, 3 and of the transport system. Most hosts do not live in the town centre as much of central London is commercial and not residential (居住的). Zones 3 and 4 often offer larger accommodation in a less crowded area. It is very convenient to travel in London by Underground.Meal Plans Available◆Continental Breakfast◆Breakfast and Dinner◆Breakfast, Packed Lunch and DinnerIt’s important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked breakfast. Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal (谷物类食品), bread and tea or coffee. Cheese, fruit and cold meat are not normally part of a Continental Breakfast in England. Dinnersusually consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by desert, fruit and coffee.FriendsIf you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host’s permission. You have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their privacy.Self-Catering Accommodation in Private HomesAccommodation on a room-only basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and often a main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an independent lifestyle and is more suitable for the long-stay student. However, it does not provide the same family atmosphere as an ordinary homestay and may not benefit those who need to practise English at home quite as much.1. The passage is probably written for ________.A. host willing to receive foreign studentsB. foreigners hoping to build British cultureC. travelers planning to visit families in LondonD. English learners applying to live in English homes2. Which of the following will the host provide?A. Room cleaning.B. Medical care.C. Free transport.D. Physical training.3. According to the passage, what does Continental Breakfast include?A. Dessert and coffee.B. Fruit and vegetables.C. Bread and fruit juice.D. Centre and cold meat.BI recently heard a story from Stephen Glenn about a famous research scientist who had made several very important medical breakthroughs. He was being interviewed by a newspaper reporter who asked him why he thought he was able to be so much more creative than the average person. What set him so far apart from others? He responded that, in his opinion, it all came from an experience with his mother that occurred when he was about two years old. He had been trying to remove a bottle of milk from the refrigerator when he lost his grip (紧握) on the slippery bottle and it fell, spilling its contents all over the kitchen floor — a real sea of milk! When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of yelling at him, giving him a lecture or punishing him, she said, “Robert, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! I have rarely seen such a huge puddle of milk.Well, the damage has already been done. Would you like to get down and play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?”Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, “You know, Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, eventually you have to clean it up and restore everything to its proper order. So, how would you like to do that? We could use a sponge (海绵), a towel or a mop. Which do you prefer?” He chose the sponge and together they cleaned up the spilled milk. His mother then said, “You know, what we have here is a failed experiment in how to effectively carry a big milk bottle with two t iny hands. Let’s go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it.” The little boy learned that if he grasped the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson! This famous scientist then remarked that it was at that moment that he knew he didn’t need to be afraid to make mistakes. Instead, he learned that mistakes were just opportunities for learning something new, which is, after all, what scientific experiments are all about. Even if the experiment “doesn’t work,” we usually learn something valuable from it.4. The passage is intended to _________.A. introduce the life story of a famous scientistB. compare the different ways of family educationC. reveal the secret of the scientist’s successD. inspire the parents to improve their teaching methods5. From the passage, we can know that Robert _________.A. was very naughty when he was twoB. was so working hard as to succeedC. owes a lot to his education from his motherD. has made some great contributions to physics research6. On seeing the spoiled milk, what did the mother do firstly?A. She comforted his son.B. She cleaned the floor.C. She taught how to grasp the bottle.D. She gave the boy a lecture.7. What can we learn from the short passage?A. Children should persuade their parents to treat them well.B. We needn’t be scared of making mistakes in life.C. Good education is necessary for children.D. We should learn something from life.CThe Success PersonalityIs there a “success personality” — some winning combination of qualities that leads almost inevitably (必然地) to achievement? If so, exactly what is that secret success formula, and can anyone develop it?At the Gallop Organization we recently focused in depth on success, probing (探查) the attitudes of 1500 prominent (杰出的) people selected at random from Who’s Who in America. Our research finds out a number of qualities that occur regularly among top achievers. Here is one of the most important, that is common sense.Common sense is the most general quality possessed by our respondents (受访者). Seventy-nine percent award themselves a top score in this quality. And 61 percent say that common sense was very important in contributing to their success. To most, common sense means the ability to present sound, practical judgments on everyday affairs. To do this, one has to sweep aside extra ideas and get right to the core of what matters. A Texas oil and gas businessman puts it this way: “The key ability for success is simplifying. In conducting of meeting and dealing with industry, reducing a complex problem to the simplest term is highly important.”Is common sense a quality a person is born wi th, or can you do something to increase it? The oil man’s answer is that common sense can definitely be developed. He attributes his to learning how to debate in school. Another way to increase your store of common sense is to observe it in others, learning from their — and your own — mistakes.Besides common sense, there are many other factors that influence success: knowing your field, self-reliance, intelligence, the ability to get things done, leadership, creativity, relationships with others, and of course, luck. But common sense stands out. If you develop these qualities, you’ll succeed. And you might even find yourself listed in Who’s Who someday.8. It can be known from the passage that W ho’s Who _________.A. is a very useful book telling us how to succeedB. is a book providing us with information about the family life of some famous peopleC. is a book providing us with names and brief biographies of the top successful peopleD. is a book from which we can find out the names of different peoples in the world9. According to the author, common sense _________.A. is something that enables one to form correct opinionsB. is a popular quality a person is born withC. is something that common people like bestD. is a quality that is possessed by common people10. It can be inferred from the passage that a successful businessman _________.A. tries to get experience through practiceB. pays attention to the essence of a problem when he tries to solve itC. keeps on learning in order to be successfulD. has strong willpower, extensive interest and intelligence11. The passage is mainly concerned with _________.A. organizational ability and good work habitsB. the way to obtain big profits and achieve fame and successC. knowledge and interest which are primary to successD. what successful people have in commonDBeauty has always been regarded as something admirable. Almost everyone thinks that attractive people are happier and healthier; they have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal consultants give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive persons. But in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability. While attractiveness is a positive thing for a man’s rise, it is harmful to a woman’s. H andsome male executives were considered as having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to be the reasons for their success. Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was attributed not to ability but to factors such as luck. All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is thought to be more feminine (有女人味的) and an attractive man more masculine (男子气概的) than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally masculine position appear s to lack the “masculine” qualities required. This is true even in politics. Anne Bowman recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them. The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the woman who had been ranked most attractive always received the fewest votes.12. In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness _________.A. strengthens the feminine qualities requiredB. makes women look more honest and capableC. is of great importance to womenD. often enables women to succeed quickly13. Bowman’s experiment shows that when it comes to politics, attractiveness _________.A. turns out to be an obstacle to menB. affects men and women alikeC. has as little effect on men as on womenD. is more of an obstacle than a benefit to women14. Attractiveness is a positive thing for a man’s promotion because _________.A. handsome men are born with the ability to succeedB. handsome men are thought to be more diligent, capable and honestC. handsome men’s success is as a result of good luckD. handsome men are often thought to be more positive and optimistic15. The author writes this passage to _________.A. discuss the negative aspects of being attractiveB. give advice to job-seekers who are attractiveC. demand equal rights for womenD. emphasize the importance of appearance第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分30分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AChinese media and Internet users on Monday condemned lack of morals in society after a little girl was struck twice—by two different vans—and left bleeding on the road as more than a dozen bystanders did nothing to help the seriously injured girl. The incident, captured by a surveillance camera and broadcast by Southern Television Guangdong(TVS),showed the two-year-old girl was knocked down and run over by a white van on a narrow market street on the afternoon of Oct.13,in Foshan City of Guangdong Province. The driver fled the scene of the accident, leaving the girl to bleed on the sidewalk.Over the next six minutes, more than a dozen people walked by the girl, yet not one individual did anything to help her.The girl was then hit a second time by another van before an elderly trash collector came to her aid and brought the attention of the girl's mother, according to the video and eyewitnesses.Doctors said that the girl, who was put on a life-support machine after being hospitalized, remains in a deep coma. The girl's parents, who are migrants living in the city, are now with her.The police said the drivers of both vehicles have been arrested. However, the apathy of the bystanders shown in the video has shocked the public,as Internet forums have seethed with anger, and people are questioning the morality of society.High moral standards were once triumphed as national pride in China where individuals known for selflessly helping others were adored by the public. But in recent years, the perception(观念)of a decline of morals has become a hot topic as profit and materialism are perceived to be affecting society's values. On Sept.2 an 88-year-old man in central China collapsed, his face striking the pavement.Yet,no one came to his aid,and he ended up choking to death on the blood from his nose. Some have linked the absence of good Samaritans(模范人物)to a previous case in which a man trying to help an elderly woman who fell was accused of harming her.A strong chorus of opinion on the Internet says laws should exempt(免除)Samaritans from liabilty(责任),yet laws themselves cannot solve society's morality dilemma.Cao Lin,a China Youth Daily commentator, said in a signed article published on Monday that the worry of liability should not be an excuse for not helping, and this case exposes the decline of humanity in Chinese society.1.Which of the following is TRUE about this passage?A.Nobody helped the girl who was struck twice by two different vans.B.The toddler died immediately after she was hit a second time.C.High moral standards were once regarded as national pride in China.D.Journalists from TVS captured the incident by u sing a camera.2.In recent years, society's values are believed to be affected by ________.A.profit and materialism B.people's perceptionsC.the apathy of bystanders D.the morals of society3.According to Cao Lin,what is the fundamental reason for not helping the girl?A.The worry of liability.B.Lack of laws that exempt Samaritans from liability.C.The decline of humanity in society.D.The fear of being accused of harming her.4.Where is the article most probably taken from?A.A fashion magazine. I didn’t want to go to the center. But I went anyway, and when I walked in everyone was smiling widely. I went immediately back to her cage; and there she was, standing on her own, a big beautiful eagle. I was just about in tears. We knew she could never fly, so the director asked me to use the glove to train her. I got her be used to the glove, and we started doing education programs for schools. Miracle Pets even did a show about us.In the spring of 2016, I was diagnosed with cancer. I had been in stage 3, which was not good. When I felt good enough, I would take Jessica out for walks. Jessica would also come to me in my dreams and help me fight the cancer time and time again.Fast forward to November 2016, I went in for my last checkup. I was told that if the cancer was not all gone, my last choice was a stem cell transplant. That is an old expression, but one worth knowing. A recent look at diets around the world shows that people who eat healthy food—and not too much of it—live longer. But which areas of the world have the best diets? Researchers found that foods in some of the healthiest diets—Mediterranean diet, New Nordic diet, Japanese diet and French diet—may be very different, but they are all heavy on local and seasonal foods, which include more vegetables and seafood and less red meat.Mediterranean diet contains lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and olive oil. The diet has proper amounts of fish and poultry(家禽肉). Red meat and foods high in sugar and salt are not big parts of this diet.New Nordic diet has whole grains like oats and rye, vegetables such as carrots, broccoli and eggs, seafood, fruits, oil, lowfat milk and cheese. Sugary desserts are not common in this diet.Japanese people are some of the longest living people on the planet, with women up to 87 years old and men up to 80. The Japanese diet is the reason for such lengths of life. The diet hasmany foods that are low in calories and high in nutrients. Japanese people eat a lot of seaweed, tofu, rice, vegetables and fish. The tradition there is to stop eating when your stomach feels 80 percent full. However, French people eat fatty foods but do not get fat. And they live a long time. This phenomenon is called the “French Paradox”. The reason why the French eat fatty foods without getting fat may be simple. They eat less. Serving sizes in French restaurants and of products sold in stores are smaller than those in most countries. And generally speaking, most French people do not snack. This means they do not eat food between meals.8.What do we know about the healthiest diets around the world?A.They contain abundant calories.B.They tend to be expensive.C.They share certain similarities.D.They reflect popular tastes.9.What is considered as a harmful eating habit in Japanese tradition?A.Going low in calories.B.Eating to the fullest.C.Having much seafood.D.Picking many foods.10.How does the author develop the central idea in the last 4 paragraphs?A.By building connections.B.By exploring reasons.C.By listing examples.D.By analyzing figures.11.Which can be the most suitable title for the text?A.What Is the Healthiest Diet on Earth?B.How Does the Old Expression Serve?C.Why Is a Healthy Diet So Important?D.Where Can We Feed Ourselves Well?DWe’ve been covering standing desks for a long time now because experts agree that sitting all day is killing us. We want to be productive while also keeping our bodies healthy. Over the years, there have been several solutions to this from fixed standing desks to adjustable ones, portable desks to ones that change into shelves. However, the most hightech and elegant solution has to be this new smart desk called the Stir Kinetic Desk. The desk learns your daily behavior and moves between a sitting and standing height regularly throughout the day to keep you moving without interrupting your work flow. You can program specific sitting and standing intervals or let the desk set the schedule. If you tend to sit while returning emails in the morning, but always want to stand during that afternoon conference call, the desk will learn those regular habits and adjust the schedule to fit them. Of course, the desk can always be manually lowered or raised by using the touchscreen on the lower left corner of the desk. When switching positions, the desk gently dips and rises to let you know that a change is coming up. If you’re not ready to switch positions at that time, you can tap the touchscreen to stay sitting or standing for a while longer. The built-in touchscreen also keeps track of your daily sitting and standing times and tells you how many calories you’ve burned. You can even set goals for how long or how often you want to stand. The desk also works with fitness devices like the Fitbit to track your movements. All of that smart technology doesn’t come cheap though. The M1 desk, which is theeveryday model, runs a steep $2, 990, while the more executive model with added features, the F1, goes for $4, 190.While expensive, it’s worth that thinking of how much time we spend at our desks. Much like a good mattress(床垫), a good desk that works with you is worth the investment. Hopefully in a few years these smart, integrated desks will be more common and less expensive.12.The Stir Kinetic Desk has been designed to ________.A.help users with their workB.keep users moving all the timeC.get users to exercise while workingD.remind users of their working schedule13.Which is the feature of the touchscreen of the desk?A.It can tell users when to change positions.B.It can track users’changes of positions.C.It can keep users in a fixed position.D.It can detect users’health condition.14.Which of the following can best describe the desk?A.Productive but challenging.B.Convenient but unaffordable.C.Complex and impractical.D.Multifunctional and intelligent.15.What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?A.To spend money on such a desk is rewarding.B.We should get such a desk as soon as possible.C.It won’t be long before the desk is widely used.D.Desks play a very important role in our daily life.

作者为了使文章的脉络清晰,一般会使用一些逻辑关联词(或短语),如on the contrary, all in all, in short, generally, surely, obviously等。
