阅读单选Of all the animals on Earth, none are more willing to explore than humans. Other animalswill go in search of food or water. But humans are searching for possibilities of discovery(发现). So what caused us to explore across the world?Maybe it’s in our DNA.In 1999, Dr. Chuansheng Chen carried out a study of a gene (基因) known as DRD4-7R. This gene is found in about 20% of all humans. This kind of people are mostly interested in taking risk, exploring, and getting new ideas. Dr. Chen found that DRD4-7R is more common in people who move around a lot than those who don’t. For example, studies in Africa show that the gene is much more common in nomadic tribes (游牧的部落) than in tribes that like to stay in one place better. Several other researchers have studied this topic and found out more to support Dr. Chen’s research. But can one gene be a drive (驱动) for the need to explore? Dr. Kidd doesn’t think so. He thinks DRD4-7R might make people get more curious (好奇的), but other important sets genes also give us great minds and skilled hands. He believes that not just one gene, but groups of genes work together to create behaviors like exploration. The environment we live in also makes much difference to our need to explore. For example, during the European Age of Exploration, explorers became rich and famous for their discoveries. This made others try to make themselves become rich through exploration too. Therefore, their exploration was more likely encouraged by money than by genes.Maybe the need to explore comes from something inside us, such as the DRD4-7R gene. Or maybe it has more to do with what’s happening in the world around us. Maybe it’s both. Whatever the reason, it seems we (or at least some of us) will keep exploring the mountains, the sea, the stars, and so on because that’s just what humans do.1.What did Dr. Chen find about the DRD4-7R gene?A.It has more influence (影响) on people in Africa.B.It could be found in most of the humans.C.It prevents the people in Africa from moving around.D.It may be more common in people who like taking risk.2.What does Dr. Kidd think of the DRD4-7R gene?A.It isn’t the only gene to encourage people to explore.B.It can encourage people to have strange behaviors.C.It is more important than all of other genes.D.It cannot be found in animals or humans.3.What did the example of the European Age of Exploration show?A.The purpose of exploring.B.The importance of the environment. C.The advantage (优势) of exploring.D.The big changes of the environment. 4.What is the structure (结构) of this passage?(P= paragraph)A.B.C.D.5.Which of the following is the best title of the text?A.Genes’ influence on humans B.Humans’ need to exploreC.What causes humans to explore D.How do humans exploreWhen I was seven years old, my family made me an ant farm (蚂蚁窝). First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box. Then we waited for the ants to arrive. After the ants were in the glass farm, they started to make tunnels. I was amazed that each one knew well what to do. Each had its own job.On the fifth day something terrible happened. I put my face so close to the glass farm that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Although the ants kept alive after their earthquake, one by one they began to die. I was frightened as I watched them give up building their tunnels to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm.My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness. They simply could not stand (忍受) thattheir tunnels were gone.Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm. Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.Over the years, I came to realize the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were able to make an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be admired (钦佩) for their hard work. But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity (逆境) is a natural part of life and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we cannot give up when we are sad. For many Chinese people, nothing is more common than drinking hot water every day. However, the simple habit is like a mystery (谜) to people from other countries. For many Westerners, the idea of drinking hot water is very strange. However, most Chinese people think the Americans’ habit of drinking ice water is also strange and even unhealthy. Some old people would carry a tea kettle (茶壶) when they travel. Chinese doctors are encouraging more people to take on the habit of drinking hot water, especially for women. But in Western countries, drinking hot water isn’t common. Westerners often have drinks with ice, not just on hot days but on almost every day. There is a story online about a British man, who has been in Beijing for over five years. He visited a local café when going back to England. He asked for a glass of hot water in a British accent (口音). But this request surprised the waitress. “To... to... to drink?” she doubted. Finally, the man received the hot water, but felt cold stares from every corner of the cafe.Westerners wonder why Chinese people drink hot water as Chinese are wondering why Westerners drink cold water. How could this happen? People used to think that hard work is the only way to success, but now they have understood that smart work can make them succeed, too.Hard workers don't mind working for long hours, while smart workers always think of several different answers to these questions, "Why should I suffer( 遭受…苦) ) this?” ” Isn't there a better way to do this?" There was no need to spend a lot of money repairing the machine for such a small problem. The engineer soon worked out a solution, he put a huge X-ray machine and two large computers to find out the empty soapboxes. After teaching the workers how to use it, he sat down in his seat, exhausted."Sir, we could have solved the problems in a much simpler and cheaper way," a worker said."Really? But in the following years, I found the pressure came to primary school children, then those of pre-school age, and finally newborn babies and pre-born children. In order to succeed, one or two years before entering kindergarten(幼稚园)they must study English, drawing, singing, and dancing, and the three years of kindergarten are mostly spent to build up an early lead in primary school performance. What if parents let their 3 or 4 years old child enjoy free time onSaturday and Sunday, after five days in nursery? They would be thought to bewasting their kid’s early life. As others do, so must they do.Yet children have not only the right, but the need to play. Kindergartensshould not be a school. There should be no classroom, no lesson, no homework, and especially no exams. Instead, playing should be the first thing for children. They need to play with others and also to play on their own,as playing is good for learning in a lively way. Children can discover numbers while playing games and the alphabet(字母表) through songs. Some Chinese characters can become familiar to them by being used in games, but the problem with kindergartens is very serious. Chinese parents think studying is more important. GoDuring the 1800s, African Americans worked long days in the fields of the American South. They sang songs that they had brought from Africa while working. One person sang a line. Then a group of workers repeated it. The song’s words told of the hardships(艰苦) that people suffered. They clapped their hands and stomped(跺) their feet to the music. In the 1860s, the music changed greatly. African American music took new forms. It was also influenced by dance music, which had great rhythm(节奏). Banjos(班卓琴) became popular. A blues singer usually sang a line and then played the banjo in reply. By the early 1900s, the guitar had taken the place of the banjo in theblues music. The blues music has many obvious characteristics. One of them is that the musical notesare often “bent”. That is, they are changed slightly to give a song more strength.Lyrics are the words of a song. Blues lyrics describe everyday life. The lyrics are oftenabout the relationships between men and women. They tell about sadness and overwork. Theytell about finding and losing love, having money or being poor, being happy or sad and lonely. They almost always use the rhythms of everyday speech. A group of blues lyrics usually has three lines. The second line repeats the first line. The third line has different words.By the 1940s, large numbers of African Americans moved to Chicago.

Buy Nothing DayFor many people, the last weekend of November kicks off the holiday shopping season. But a growing number of people are celebrating a different kind of holiday. It’s called Buy Nothing Day. On this day, people are encouraged not to spend any money at all. The movement was started in 1995 by a group who cared about the environmental effects of shopping. “If we buy something, we think we are helping the economy. But we’re killing the planet, and wasting our resources,” said one organizer. “For one thing, just think about all the paper and plastic we’re wasting on shopping bags.”There are Buy Nothing Festivals in most major cities. Participants go to big shopping centers and malls and hand out leaflets about the bad effects of shopping. Other participants cut up their credit cards in public. Some organizers are unhappy this year because major TV networks will not give them air time to advertise Buy Nothing Day.
