online dating research report

IntroductionOnline dating is the practice of searching for a romantic or potential partner on the Internet, typically via a dedicated website. With the development of communicational technology, online dating has had an increasingly significant effect on the ways in which people find love. The convenience of being able to siftamong hundreds of profiles instead ofgoing out is the most important benefit of online dating. One tenth of Americans, especially for those who are single and actively finding long-term partners have used online dating sites or mobile app (Smith & Duggan, 2013). Furthermore, people have had more positive attitudes toward online dating (Smith & Duggan, 2013). To some extent, online dating could break the limitation of social circle, especially for overseas student who live in new country and cultural environment. The currently research explored the attitudes and habits of overseas students toward online dating.Several studies have been conducted on habits and attitudes of online dating. The study of Smith and Duggon (2013) about online dating and relationship showed that meeting people who share similar interests or habits was the main reason for online dating among active online daters. It also indicated that meeting people who just want to have fun without being in a serious relationship was the least common major reason for online dating. Similar result that had been found in the study of Romano (2013) was that “online dating is a great way to meet people with high level of compatibility and real marriage potential”. However, Smith and Duggon‟s research showed that 82% American had negative online dating experience when use online dating site. The study of Anderson (2012) showed that the majority of respondents chatted online at least two weeks before meeting a date. The results might be outdated in some of the research about online dating. Madden and Lenhart conducted their survey in 2006. But from 2006 to now, there was a significantdevelopment in communicational technology area. The surveyby Smith and Duggon was only conducted in America and it did not include overseas students. So what are the attitudes and habits of overseas students regarding online dating? None of previous research has considered the special group of online daters. This study aims to analyze the online dating attitudes and habits among overseas students in Australia. The hypothesis of this research is that there are difference in online dating habits and attitudes between American and overseas students in Australia. The finding of this research should be helpful to psychologists and companies which run online dating business, such as online dating websites. By analyzing online daters‟ attitudes and habits, they could improve online dating service, even extend off-line dating service.MethodologyOn November 15th 2013, a survey was conducted that was aimed at findingonline dating attitudes and habits of overseas students in Australia. The survey was conducted at English institute Navitas in Sydney. The sample included 50 international students (34 males and 16 females). The majority of respondents were Asian. The research was carried out by means of a questionnaire that contained 10 questions. Nine questions were close-ended and only the question about nationality was open-ended.The questionnaire consisted of three sections. The first section recorded demographic information, including gender, age and nationality. The second section was related to overseas students‟attitude about online-dating. The third section focused on online dating habits of overseas student. The results were collated and converted to percentages. The data were represented in graphs and tables and the analyzed.ResultsGraph 1 illustrates the main reason for using online dating sites of overseas students in Australia.Overall, the largest proportion of international students in Australia used online dating sites in order to meet people who share similar interest or hobbits.According to the graph, about two thirds of overseas students used online dating sites with the main purpose of meeting people who share similar interest or hobbits (63%). However, the two least common reasons of overseas students using online dating sites were having a schedule that makes it hard to meet interesting people in other ways (6%) and meeting people who just want to have fun without being in serious relationship (6%). There was the same percentage of respondents who chose finding someone for a long-term relationship or marriage (13%) and meeting people who share your beliefs or values (13%) as the main reasons.Graph 2 shows the number of online dater who had bad experience when use online dating site among overseas students in Australia.Overall, the number of online daters who had bad experience when use online dating site are more than online daters who never had bad experience. As can be seen from the pie chart, 56% of respondents had bad experience when use online dating site. The percentage of overseas students who never had bad experience was slightly lower than that of online dater who had bad experience (44%).Graph 3 indicates the time of online chat before online daters meeting in person among international students in Australia. In general, the majority of respondents had online chat at least 3 weeks beforemeeting online daters. There were still more one tenth of students using online dating only to meet people online.According to the graph, a quarter of students had online chat for more than one month before meeting, which was less common than chatting online for 3-4 weeks before meeting(31%). Furthermore, the number of overseas student who had online chat for less than one week before meeting in person was as about twice as them who took 1-2 weeks to chat online with their online daters (19% and 12% respectively).DiscussionThe aim of this research was to analyze attitudes and habits of online dating among international students in Australia. The hypothesis of this study was that overseas students in Australia had different attitudes and habits in online dating with Americans. It seems that the finding of this survey partially supported the hypothesis, as the majority of students indicated that meeting people who share similar interests or habits was the major reason for online dating. However, over a half of respondents had bad experience when use online dating site. The last finding was that students often spent at least 4 weeks on online chat before meeting date. These results should be analyzed. It is evident that overseas students in Australia used online dating site in order to meet people who share similar interests or habits. Similarly, the study of Smith and Duggon (2013) named online dating and relationship showed that meeting people who share similar interests or habits was the main reason for online dating among active online daters. The study of Romano (2013) also indicated that “online dating is a great way tomeet people with high level of compatibility and real marriage potential”. One possible reason of this similarity between overseas students and Americans could be that online dating is the easiest way to find people who share similar interests. Search techniques and filtered function of online dating sites allow online daters to find a potential date with high efficiency. Furthermore, online daters might be more relaxed and confident when communicating online or via email, than participating in face-to-face interaction, especially for those people who have communication barriers. In addition, overseas students likely do not have a strong desire to find long- term partners because of their condition of heavy study burden. They might just want to broaden their social circle by using online dating site when they live in new surroundings. The study found that the number of online daters who had bad experiences when use online dating siteswas more than online daters who never had bad experiences. One possible reason could be bad service of online dating sites. Many online dating sites require payment if online dater want to get information or background about potential daters. But sometimes the information is useless or untrustworthy. Another likely reason might be the risk of privacy leaks. Personal information such as home address and phone number is put in internet so that a wide range of online users can contact you. The research result is supported by Smith and Duggon (2013), which showed that a majority (54%) of online daters have felt that someone seriously misrepresented themselves in their profile. And over a quarter of online daters have been contacted through an online dating site in a way that made them feel harassed or uncomfortable. The last finding worth analyzing is that the majority overseas students in Australia spent at least 4 weeks beforemeeting online daters. However, the study of Anderson (2012) showed that the majority of Americans chatted online only 2 weeks before meeting a dater. There are two likely reasons why overseas students would be willing to spend more time on online chat before meeting. Firstly, overseas students might need more to build strong connection by online chatting. Compared with American who had open dating tradition overseas students in Australia would be more concerned about dating safety. Another one reason could be sufficient time to arrange meeting. Students who are not familiar with the new environment and culture need more time to prepare for meeting. One limitation of this research is that the questionnaire was only conducted at one English institution. The vast majority of samples were Asian. Similar custom and culture limit the diversity of the results. Another one limitation is that results were not compared by gender. Thirdly, the close-ended questions provide limited options to choose. The future survey in this area could investigate more international students from different colleges and universities covered the whole Australia. The results could be selected and compared by different races, so that different habits and attitudes about online dating can be found. More open- ended questions will be needed in future survey which enable respondents fully express opinions. The managers or designers of online dating website may find this study useful to analyze overseas students‟ attitudes and habits regarding online dating. The onl ine dating companies could provide special service for overseas students. The results of in this research also could help online dating companies extend off-line dating service for these online daters. Furthermore, this survey is also helpful for psychologists who want to analyz e online daters‟ attitudes and habits.Reference ListAppendixONLINE DATING1. Gender□ Male□ Female2. It may seem like a fairy tale coming true-- until it happens to you or someone you know. I am one of the f ew who met their “life mates” through the Internet and that’s just how we also felt when it happened to us.We met in a chat room on the subject of computers and the Internet. I was in the USA and he was in England. We chatted on the Internet and by phone for almost a year before we finally met. We were both going through the end of our marriages and just enjoyed having each other to talk to and discovered we had a lot in common. In no time at all, it felt as if we’d known each other for years. He sometimes called me at work, and oh, such lovely email greetings we’d sent each other. It truly was a “worldly romance” in bloom!!On my birthday-- much to the awe and delight of my friends-- he sent flowers to my job site. Since my co-workers relieved me for breaks, he had spoken to them many times when he would call for me-- this made him become “real” and very well known. As time went by, even they were soon to admit a true relationship was developing. Our feelings steadily blossomed into a beautiful love. As we prepared for our first meeting, we both were amazed at how everything seemed to just work itself out for us! It was as if it were a “sign” encouraging us every step of the way! When my plane landed in England and we held each other for the first time, there was such a sense of love and endearment that it felt as though we had always been together. From the start of our first meeting we both felt so comfortable and secure with each other. Since we had talked for so long on the Internet, we felt a natural connection to each other. It was amazing how we perfectly matched as we knew about each other in every way. Anyone who had seen us together could see how much in love we were. Through the events of his meeting my family in Texas at Christmas and ourmarrying on the 18th, it made December 2000 a month to remember. We now live in England where we are making the plans we had once only chatted about through a computer-- a reality of a beautiful life together.Real World Listening1.
