该板块以“通过历史了解一个国家（的概况）”（Learn about a country through history）为活动主题，引导学生通过阅读英国历史的简单发展进程，了解英国地理、社会及文化概况深入思考历史与社会文化之间的关系。了解文化对英语学习能起到促进作用。语篇的主题是“What’s in a Name?”，从人们对英国为何有很多不同的名称这个困惑入手，用浅显的语言描述了“大不列颠及北爱尔兰联合王国”漫长而复杂的形成过程，引导学生关注并思考英国社会文化的各方面情况，拓展文化视野，培养学生的批判性思维和创造性思维。

1. 单元设计指导思想及设计思路
基于主题意义，使学生在知识建构中逐步形成对单元话题的深层认知，提升英语学科核心素养。具体而言，有如下五个步骤：
(1) 研读单元各语篇内容，分析主题意义；
(2) 将各语篇按主题意义分类，确定单元教学目标；
(3) 基于单元教学目标，整合提炼单元主题；
(4) 基于单元主题意义重新梳理各语篇，提炼为单元主题意义服务的小单元；

time when the old must give way to the new, and it is not possible to preserve
everything from our past as we move towards the future. Finding and keeping the
right balance between progress and the protection of cultural sites can be a big
challenge.
