A

I found the imagination of becoming a grandmother somewhat discouraging. I was younger than I thought a grandmother should be when I got the news that I was going to become one myself. I admitted, it was not a role that I was emotionally ready to accept. I had been a young mother, and had certainly hoped my daughter would not face that same challenge. I remarried when she was a teenager, and then had two more children. On getting the news that she was expecting, I remembered thinking: "What do I know about being a grandmother?—I haven't even finished raising my own kids yet!" I didn't like to be unprepared, so I read a few books about grandparenting. That gave me a little help, but I was still uncertain. I thought about other grandmothers I knew, and got a few ideas I liked and a few more that I didn't. But I couldn't quite figure out what kind of grandmother I wanted to be. Then I thought about my own grandmother, Granny, as she's known by most people, and I knew I had the answer.

I didn't realize it until that moment, but my own grandmother was the example for the kind of grandmother I wanted to be. I am fortunate that I got to spend a lot of time with my grandparents when I was a little kid. Here's what I learned from my Granny.

Grandmothers always have a cookie jar. For my entire life, Granny always had a cookie jar full of cookies. When I was a little tiny girl, just at eye level with the counter, Granny would get the cookie jar down for me. When I was a little older I learned how to pull the chair over so I could reach. As I got taller, if I really stretched, I could reach the cookie jar with my finger tips and move it close enough to get it down off the counter to find out what kind of treat was inside. Always the first thing I did when I went to Granny's house was to check the cookie jar, and there were always cookies in it. Many years later, I'll drive my own children to Granny's house and the first thing is to get us all a cookie.

So grandmothers must have a cookie jar, and on my granddaughter's first Christmas, my daughter bought me my own cookie jar. She said when they came to see me, her daughter would find the treat the way she did and I did.

31. The writer thought it was a little discouraging to be a grandmother because .

C. being a young grandmother

D. being a young mother

33. What kind of grandmother did the writer want to be?

A. One who has a jar filled with many kinds of cookies for children and herself.

B. One who grows up with her grandmother's cookie jar with all kinds of cookies.

C. One who is like her own grandmother with a cookie jar to treat her grandchildren.

D. One who always makes different kinds of cookies to treat her grandchildren.

34. Which of the following can be the best title for this text?

A. Grandmother's Cookie Jar

B. Grandmother's Treat for Children

C. Grandmothers and Grandchildren

D. Happy Memories of Cookies

B

This is the best time and this is the worst time; this is the time of great material richness and this is the time of desert of soul. Everyone seems to be rushing around for something but they have never fulfilled their dreams. Everyone tries to seek happiness but it seems to be nowhere to be found.

When asked "what on earth can make you happy?", most modern men would give similar replies such as becoming extremely wealthy, or getting promoted in work and then becoming very wealthy. When asked "what will you do with your wealth?", they would make a long list of things they have been longing for. However haven't you noticed the multibillionaires are not as happy as we common guys suppose them to be? Haven't you noticed that the multibillionaire celebrities don't even enjoy the fundamental freedom of going shopping with their own families without being followed by annoying paparazzi?

If we hinge our happiness on such big issues, we are bound to be unhappy all through our life, because those big issues might just occur to us once in a blue moon.

As Socrates once put it, "He is the richest who is content with the least, for content is the wealth of nature". But how can we "be content with the least"? If you pay due attention, our life is loaded with little joys, sometime too little to be noticeable. Stop once in a while in your rush to your destination, look around and you will see that there are always little things worth cheering for. You got an "A" in a test. Good! You listened to all inspiring lecture. Great! You offered a helping hand to someone who had a flat tire! Amazing! Your dream girl/boy greeted you with a sweet smile! Fantastic! And so on and so forth! Let's cheer for the little joys in life!

Please keep in mind that never should we wait to be happy!

35. What is the best title of the text?

A. Money Means Happiness

B. Happiness is All Around Us

C. Dreams Make Our Life Rich

D. Satisfaction is Unacceptable

36. According to the text, which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Money doesn't necessarily bring happiness.

B. Desire for wealth makes people unhappy.

C. Great occasions are worth celebrating.

D. We should ignore little joys in our life.

37. What does the underlined phrase in the third paragraph probably mean?

A. Rarely.

B. Regularly.

C. Normally.

D. Frequently.

38. In the fourth paragraph, the author suggests that we should .

A. set up great goals in life

B. make full use of opportunities

C. enjoy every moment in life

D. seek significant issues in life

C

Electric cars are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be dirtier than their gasoline-powered cousins.

People in California love to talk about "zero-emission(零排放) vehicles", but people in California seem to be clueless about where electricity comes from. Power plants most all use fire to make it. Apart from the few people who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get our electricity from generators(发电机). Generators are fueled by something—usually coal, oil, but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal(地热的) plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something.

In other words, those "zero-emission" cars are likely coal-burning cars. Because the coal is burned somewhere else, it looks clean. It is not true. It's as if the California Greens are covering their eyes—"If I can't see it, it's not happening." Gasoline is an incredibly efficient way to power a vehicle;

a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it. But when you take that gas (or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat—at the generator, through the transmission lines, etc.

A gallon of gas may drive your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won't get you nearly as far, so electric cars burn more fuel than gasoline-powered ones. If our electricity came mostly from wind or geothermal, or solar, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons, we don't use much of those energy sources.

In addition, electric cars' batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill. And finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When it's a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot.

39. What's the main idea of the passage?

A. Electric cars aren't actually clean.

B. Electric cars are zero-emission vehicles.

C. Zero-emission vehicles are popular.

D. Gasoline-powered cars are more efficient.

40. Which of the following words can replace "be clueless about" in Paragraph 2?

A. be familiar with

B. be curious about

C. fail to understand

D. show their interest in

41. The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car run .

A. at least 25 miles

B. more than 25 miles

C. as far as 25 miles

D. less than 25 miles

42. In the author's opinion, compared with cars using gas, electric cars are more .

A. environmentally friendly

People born in winter are more likely to suffer mental health disorders, according to a recent study carried out by researchers at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee.

Researchers raised baby mice from birth to weaning(断奶) in either "summer" light cycles of 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark or "winter" cycles of 8 hours of light and 16 hours of dark. A third group experienced 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark a day.

Then half the winter mice stayed in a winter cycle, while half switched to a summer schedule. The summer mice were similarly split. The mice raised in equal periods of light and dark were split into three groups, one of which stayed on the 12-hour schedule, one of which joined the winter group, and one of which joined the summer group.

After 28 days, it turns out the summer-born mice behaved the same whether they stayed on the summer cycle or switched to winter. But among the winter-born mice, those stayed in winter kept their previous schedule, while those that switched to summer stayed active for an extra hour and a half, which indicates that mice born and weaned in a winter light cycle showed dramatic disruptions in their biological clocks.

The finding is the first of its kind in mammals, and it could explain why people born in winter are at higher risk for mental health disorders including bipolar depression, schizophrenia and seasonal affective disorder.

"We know that the biological clock regulates mood in humans," said study researcher McMahon. "If the mechanism (机制) similar to the one that we found in mice operates in humans, then it could not only have an effect on a number of behavioral disorders, but also have a more general effect on personality."

43. How many groups of mice are there finally in all in the experiment?

A. Four.

B. Five.

C. Six.

D. Seven.

44. What's the main idea of the text?

A. The biological clock regulates mood in humans.

B. People born in winter are at a higher risk for physical health disorders.

C. Being born in winter have a negative effect on people's mental health.

D. The length of light will influence the behavior of the mice.

45. Which group of mice have changed their behavior after the experiment?

A. The group born in winter and staying in winter.

B. The group born in winter and switching to summer.

C. The group born in summer and staying in summer.

D. The group born in summer and switching to winter.

46. Who is the appropriate reader of the passage?

A. A job-hunter.

Ask Dr. Jeffers

This month Dr. Jeffers is answering questions about the

human brain and how it works.

Dear Dr. Jeffers,

One of my colleagues, Felix Moeller, told me that scientists

are learning to use computer to "read minds". Is there any truth to

this story?

—Jane Leon,

New York, USA

Dear Ms. Leon,

Well, a lot of research is being conducted in this area, but so

far, the brain scanning equipment and corresponding computer

programs haven't been able to actually read thoughts. In one experiment, test subjects(受试者) were connected to scanning equipment and shown two numbers on a screen. They were then

asked to choose between adding or subtracting(减) the two numbers. Using this method, researchers were able to follow brain processes and make the correct assumptions(假设) 70 percent of

the time. It's not quite mind reading, but it's certainly a first step.

—Dr. J.

Dear Dr. Jeffers,

My three-year-old son loves it when I dig my fingers into his

sides and tickle (胳肢) him until he laughs uncontrollably. The

other day I noticed him trying to tickle himself but he couldn't do it.

Why not?

—Glenn Lewis, Vancouver, Canada

Dear Mr. Lewis,

It's because of how the brain works. The brain is trained to

know what to pay attention to and what to ignore. It causes us to

ignore physical feelings we expect to happen, but it causes a mild

panic reaction when there is an unexpected feeling. For example,

you don't notice how your shoulder feels while you're walking

down the street. But if someone comes up behind you and touches

you lightly on the shoulder, you may jump in fear. It's that

unexpected part that causes the tickle reaction.

—Dr. J.

47. What can we learn from the answer to the first question?

A. Some equipment is able to read human minds.

B. Some progress has been made in mind reading.

C. Test subjects have been used to make decisions.

D. Computer programs can copy brain processes.

48. People laugh when tickled by others because the feeling is .

A. unexpected

B. expected

C. comfortable

D. uncomfortable

49. Who has got a little child according to the text?

A. Ms. Leon.

B. Mr. Lewis.

C. Mr. Moeller.

D. Dr. Jeffers.

50. According to the text, Jeffers is probably .

A. a computer programmer

B. a test subject

C. a human brain expert

D. a medical doctor

In recent years, the volunteering spirit has spread among the Chinese people, especially among youngsters.

Five years ago, several of my classmates and I once served as volunteers for the Beijing Olympic Games. In that period of time, I helped arrange for the sports courts, translate for foreign athletes and visitors, and sometimes guide them to right places. It delighted me a lot that I had made a contribution to the success of the Games and brought happiness to others.

As high school students, we should get actively involved in voluntary activities. In this way, we can learn how to work well in a team, how to improve our interpersonal skills and organizational abilities. Above all, we can benefit others and gain happiness ourselves. So we should take this chance to learn and to grow.

8 Unit 1 A land of diversity-Reading CALIFORNIA California is the third largest state in the USA but has the largest population. It also has the distinction of being the most multicultural state in the USA, having attracted people from all over the world. The customs and languages of the immigrants live on in their new home. This diversity of culture is not surprising when you know the history of California. NATIVE AMERCANS Exactly when the first people arrived in what we now know as California, no one really knows. However, it is likely that Native Americans were living in California at least fifteen thousand years ago. Scientists believe that these settlers crossed the Bering Strait in the Arctic to America by means of a land bridge which existed in prehistoric times. In the 16th century, after the arrival of the Europeans, t he native people suffered greatly. Thousands were killed or forced into slavery. In addition, many died from the diseases b rought by the Europeans. However, some survived these terrible times, and today there are more Native Americans living in California than in any other state. THE SPANISH In the 18th century California was ruled by Spain. Spanish soldiers first arrived in South America in the early 16th century, when they fought against the native people and took their land. Two centuries later, the Spanish had settled in most parts of South America and along the northwest coast of what we now call the United States. Of the first Spanish to go to California, the majority were religious men, whose ministry was to teach the Catholic religion to the natives. In 1821, the people of Mexico gained their independence from Spain. California then became part of Mexico. In 1846 the United States declared war on Mexico, and after the war won by the USA, Mexico had to give California to the USA. However, there is still a strong Spanish influence in the state. That is why today over 40 of Californians speak Spanish as a first or second language. RUSSIANS In the early 1800s, Russian hunters, who had originally gone to Alaska, began settling in California. Today there are about 25,000 Russian-Americans living in and around San Francisco. GOLD MINERS In 1848, not long after the American-Mexican war, gold was discovered in California. The dream of becoming rich quickly attracted people from all over the world. The nearest, and therefore the first to arrive, were South Americans and people from the United States. Then adventurers from Europe and Asia soon followed. In fact, few achieved their dream of becoming rich. Some died or returned home, but most remained in California to make a life for themselves despite great hardship. They settled in the new towns or on farms. By the time California elected to become the thirty-first federal state of the USA in 1850, it was already a multicultural society.
