Unit 3Fairness for allListening■ This is an opportunity for students to find out a little more about what happened if you were a black man in America and how it felt. Tom Robinson is accused of a crime he has not committed, but the prejudice against black men is so strong that helping and kissing white women is considered guilty when before the trials begins. Only Atticus ,Scouf s father, is prepared to defend him and prove that he did not commit this crime ・■ Who attacked Mayella Ewell?Narrators:■ I had come to court to see my father, Atticus (A), defend a black, Tom Robinson. Tom had been accused of attacking and kissing a poor white girl, Mayella (M). First, Atticus questioned Mr Ewell, Mayella 6s father(F), who discovered the attack.■ A: Now what do you say happed^MrEwell?■ F: well, the night of November 211 was coming in from the woods with a load of wood and just as I got to the fence I heard my daughter, Mayella ^creaming inside the house…,So, I dropped the wood and ranas fast as I could to the window・ I saw thatblack Negro attacking my mayella・■A: what did you do?■F: I ran for the law as fast as I could past that area where the Negroes live. They^re dangerous and their houses are dirty and…■A: Did you run for the doctor?■F: Didn^t need to. I saw what happened.■A: but weren^t you concerned about Mayella? ■F: I certainly was .But I saw who done it.■A: No, I mean her injuries. Didift they need medical attention?■F: I ain't never call a doctor in my life.■A: where were the injuries ?■F: They were round her neck and to her right eye and right side of her face.■A: So we9re looking for a left-handed man. Can you write, Mr. Ewell?■F: I sure can.■A: Would you write your name for us? Thank you ・ I can see you're lefthanded ・■F: I am indeed・■A: Thank you.■N: Then Atticus began to ask Mayella some questions.■A: Now Mayella,Is your father good to you?■M: He is ok except when he9s been drinking ・■A: Does he beat you ?■M: He,s never tQiifh身0 a hair of my head■A: Does he help you in the house?■M: No, but I ask Tom to help sometimes・He helped me that day.■A: Now, you said Tom was behind you. ■M: Yes■A: You said he got you round the neck. ■M: Sure did.■A: Do you remember him beating aroundthe face with his left hand?■M: No, I don't ......... y es J do ・■A: Mayella, you said that the man hit you, grabbed you round the neck and tried to kiss you ・ I want to be sure you have the right man. Will you point at the man who attacked you ?■M: I will ・ him right over there.■A: Tom, stand up. Let Mayella have a good look at you. Is this the man・■N: Tom rose to his feet. He looked odd but it wasn^t the way he was standing. His left arm was twelve inches shorter than his right. It ended in a small hand and I could see it was no use to him・■A: Is this the man who attacked you?■M: He sure did.■A: How ?Note■ The case is that a left-handed man hitMayella putting his hands around herneck and giving her a black eye. As Tom5s left hand is very short and therefore weak, he could not have committed this crime・The only other person who could havedone it is the father.Answer key for exercise 1■ Tom■Is a black man■Accused of the attack■Mr. Ewell■Is Mayella^s father ■Who saw the attack ■Mayella■Is a young girl■Who was attacked and beaten ■Atticus■Is a lawyer■Who is trying to find out the truth of the attackAnswers to exercise 2 ■ 1.something he did not doCall for a doctor■ Something he believes■2.Mayella was hurt round her neck and to her right eye and right side of her face・■3.Tom is innocent because his left hand is weak and the crime was committed by a left-handed man・■ 4. The only other person who could have attacked Mayella is her father・ He is left-handed and may have hit her when hastoo much to drink.■ 5. He thinks all whites are better than all blacks.
