He is a tall, thin, grey-haired man whose thoughts are always on learning and nothing else. He is quiet, gentle and absent-minded and with about as much sense as a child where money is concerned. Well, he applied for a post in Camford University. It was a very good post and there were hundreds of candidates who applied for it, and about fifteen, including Theo, were asked to go to be interviewed.Camford is a very small town with only one hotel in it. It was so full that they had to put many of the candidates two in a room. Theo was one of these, and the man who shared the room with him was a clever and self-confident fellow called Adams, about twenty years younger than Theo, with a loud voice, and a laugh that you could hear all over the hotel. Well, the Dean, that’s the head of the department of the University, and the committee interviewed all the candidates; and, as a result of this interview, the number was reduced to two, Uncle Theo and Adam. The committee decided to make their final choice after each candidate had given a public lecture in the college lecture-hall. The subject they had to speak on was “The Civilization of the Ancient Sumerians”; and the lecture had to be given in three days’ time.Well, for three days Uncle Theo never left his room. He worked day and night at that lecture, writing it out and memorizing it, almost without eating or sleeping. Adams did n’t seem to do any preparation at all. You could hear his voice in the bar where he had a crowd of people round him. He came to his room late at night, asked Uncle Theo how he was getting on with his lecture, and then told him how he had spent the evening playing bridge, or at the music-hall. He ate like a horse and slept like a log; and Uncle Theo sat up working at his lecture. The day of the lecture arrived. They all went into the lecture-room and Theo and Adams took their seats on the platform. And then, Theo discovered, to his horror, that the typewritten copy of his speech had disappeared! The Dean said they would call on the candidates in alphabetical order, Adams first; and, with despair in his heart,Theo watched Adams calmly take the stolen speech out of his pocket and read it to the professors who were gathered to hear it. And how well he read it! Even Theo had to admit that he couldn’t have read it nearly so eloquently himself, and when Adams finished there was a great burst of applause. Adams bowed and smiled, and sat down. Now it was Theo’s turn. But what could he do? He had put everything he knew into that lecture. His mind was too much upset to put the same thoughts in another way. With a burning face he could only repeat, word for word, in a low dull voice, the lecture that Adams had spoken so eloquently. There was hardly any applause when he sat down. The Dean and the committee went out to decide who the successful candidate was, but everyone was sure what their decision would be. Adams leaned across to Theo and patted him on the back and said, smilingly, “Hard luck, old fellow, but, after all, only one of us could win.”Then the Dean and the committee came back, “Gentlemen,” the Dean said, “the candidate we have chosen is Mr. Hobdell.” Uncle Theo had won! The audience were completely taken by surprise, and the Dean continued, “I think I ought to tell you how we arrived at that decision. We were all filled with admiration at the eloquence of Mr. Adams. But I didn’t think he had it in him. You will remember, Mr. Adams read his lecture to us. When Mr. Hobdell’s turn came, he repeated that speech, word by word from memory, though, of course, he couldn’t have seen a line of it before. Now a fine memory is absolutely necessary for this post; and what a memory Mr. Hobdell must have! That is why we decided that Mr. Hobdell was exactly the man we wanted.”As they walked out of the room, the Dean came up to Uncle Theo and said, “Congratulations, Mr. Hobdell! But, my dear fellow, when you are on our staff, you must be more careful and not leave valuable papers lying about!”Read the following statements and decide whether they are true(T) or false(F) according to the text.51. 第三学期_大学英语3_Unit_1

UNIT 1TEXTA young man finds that strolling along the streets without an obvious purpose can lead to trouble with the law. One misunderstanding leads to another until eventually he must appear in court for trial.A Brush with the LawI have only once been in trouble with the law. The whole process of being arrested and taken to court was a rather unpleasant experience at the time, but it makes a good story now. What makes it rather disturbing was the arbitrary circumstances both of my arrest and my subsequent fate in court. It happened in February about twelve years ago. I had left school a couple of months before that and was not due to go to university until the following October. I was still living at home at the time.Once morning I was in Richmond, a suburb of London near where I lived. I was looking for a temporary job so that I could save up some money to go traveling. As it was a fine day and I was in no hurry, I was taking my time, looking in shop windows, strolling in the park, and sometimes just stopping and looking around me. It must have been this obvious aimlessness that led to my downfall. It was about half past eleven when it happened. I was just walking out of the local library, having unsuccessfully sought employment there, when I saw a man walking across the road with the obvious intention of talking to me. I thought he was going to ask me the time. Instead, he said he was a police officer and he was arresting me. At first I thought it was some kind of joke. But them another policeman appeared, this time in uniform, and I was left in no doubt.'But what for?' I asked.'Wandering with intent to commit an arrestable offence,' he said.'What offence?' I asked.'Theft,' he said.'Theft of what?' I asked.'Milk bottles,' he said, and with a perfectly straight face too!'Oh,' I said.It turned out there had been a lot of petty thefts in the area, particularly that of stealing milk bottles from doorsteps. Then I made my big mistake. At the time I was nineteen, had long untidy hair, and regarded myself as part of the sixties' 'youth counterculture'. As a result, I wanted to appear cool and unconcerned with the incident, so I said, 'How long have you been following me?' in the most casual and conversational tone I could manage. I thus appeared to them to be quite familiar with this sort of situation, and it confirmed them in their belief that I was a thoroughly disreputable character.A few minutes later a police car arrived.'Get in the back,' they said. 'Put your hands on the back of the front seat and don't move them.'They got in on either side of me. It wasn't funny any more.At the police station they questioned me for several hours. I continued to try to look worldly and au fait with the situation. When they asked me what I had been doing, I told them I'd been looking for a job. 'Aha,' I could see them thinking, 'unemployed.' Eventually, I was officially charged and told to report to Richmond Magistrates' Court the following Monday. Then they let me go.I wanted to conduct my own defence in court, but as soon as my father found out what had happened, he hired a very good solicitor. We went along that Monday armed with all kinds of witnesses, including my English teacher from school as a character witness. But he was never called on to give evidence. My 'trial' didn't get that far. The magistrate dismissed the case after fifteen minutes. I was free. The poor police had never stood a chance. The solicitor even succeeded in getting costs awarded against the police. And so I do not have a criminal record. But what was most shocking at the time was the things my release from the charge so clearly depended on. I had the 'right' accent, respectable middle-class parents in court, reliable witnesses, and I could obviously afford a very good solicitor. Given the obscure nature of the charge, I feel sure that it I had come from a different background, and had really been unemployed, there is every chance that I would have been found guilty. While asking for costs to be awarded, my solicitor's case quite obviously revolved around the fact that I had a 'brilliant academic record'. Meanwhile, just outside the courtroom, one of the policemen who had arrested me was gloomily complaining to my mother that another youngster had been turned against the police. 'You could have been a bit more helpful when we arrested you,' he said to me reproachfully. What did he mean? Presumably that I should have looked outraged and said something like, 'Look here, do you know who you're talking to? I am a highly successful student with a brilliant academic record. How dare you arrest me!' Then they, presumably, would have apologized, perhaps even taken off their caps, and let me on my way.

Wax printing appeared in China about 2,000 years ago. Wax printing has long been a widespread technique used in the history of Chinese fashion. During the dyeing process, beeswax is applied to prevent some parts of the cloth form being dyed. When the beeswax dries, it develops cracks, thus forming the beautiful natural lines resembling ice flowers. These naturally formed lines represent the beauty and soul of wax printing.
According to the Chinese thought of yin, yang and the five elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth), all things in the universe consist of the five elements; there is a phenomenon of mutual promotion and restraint among the five elements. The white stands for metal, the green for wood, the black for water, the red for fire and the yellow for earth. Since the Han Dynasty in Chinese history, the yellow had been accepted by all people and regarded as the most distinguished color. After the Tang Dynasty, the clothing system stipulated that all the people were prohibited from wearing yellow clothes except the royal family.
New Year Painting, a kind of Chinese painting, originated from ancient door god painting. In the period of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, it was formally known as New Year Painting. In the Northern Song Dynasty, it was a trend to paste new year paintings on New Year festivals and other holidays. The wood panel new year painting has a long history. It can be called a pearl of the treasures of folk art in China. The wood panel new year paintings, as its name implies, are painted with wood panels. They not only have very high artistic value, but also are highly ornamental.
In English, china has the same meaning as porcelain. This proves that Europeans have long known of China’s relation to porcelain. Porcelain found its way to Europe in the 15th century, occupying an important position in the exchanges between China and other countries. Throughout history, China, along with other Asian countries, and Europe maintained a busy and vast trade in porcelain.

China should further develop the nuclear energy, for nuclear power only accounts for 2% of the gross electrical power output, which makes China the least, the 30th, in the list of countries which own nuclear power. After the Japan’s accidents in March 2011, the exploration/development of nuclear power was suspended, including stopping examining and approving new nuclear power stations. Meantime, safety inspection of all the nuclear stations was carried out. The approval didn’t recover until October, 2012.With the improvement of technology and safety arrangement, the possibilities of nuclear accidents could be reduced to a minimum degree. That is to say, nuclear power could be developed and utilized without accidents.
