The Patient and the Ship Owner
This incident occurred one morning outside Albert Sch-weitzer's hospital in the African jungle.A patient had gone fishing in another man's boat.The owner of the boat thought he should be gi*en all the fish that were caught.Dr.Sch-weitzer said to the boat owner：
“You are right because the other man ought to ha*e asked permission to use your boat.But you are wrong because you are careless and lazy.You merely twisted the chain of your canoe round a palm tree instead of fastening it with a padlock.Of laziness you are guilty because you were asleep in your hut on this moonlit night instead of making use of the good opportunity for fishing.”
He turned to the patient:“But you were in the wrong when you took the boat without asking the owner's permission.You were in the right because you were not so lazy as he was and
you did not want to let the moonlit night go by without making some use of it.”
Dr.Schweitzer di*ided the catch among the fisherman, the boat owner, and the hospital.

这件事，是一天早晨在非洲丛林中的艾伯特·施韦策的医院外面发生的。

一位病人乘了别人的船去捕鱼，船主认为，捕到的鱼应悉数归他。

施韦策博士对船主说：
“你有对的一面，因为别人要用你的船，理应先征得你的同意;但你也有错的一面，因为你粗心大意，而且懒惰。

你只把独木舟的链条绕在一棵棕榈树上，没有用锁锁牢。

对于懒惰，你是有愧的，因为月明今宵，你关在屋里睡大觉，却没有利用良机去捕鱼。

”
他又转向那位病人说：“但是，你未征得船主的许可便动用了他的船，在这点上你是不对的。

你也有对的一面，因为你不像他那样懒惰，你不想让这月夜白白溜走而不去利用它。

”
施韦策博士把捕来的鱼分给了渔夫、病人和医院三方。

山泉与金沙
A small mountain spring ran tinkling down the narrow
stone cre*ices. Many years passed. An egg-sized shallow hole was washed out on the rock. Strangely, the mountain spring anyhow brought some bright yellow gold sand and got to fill the small hole.
One day, an old woodcutter hit on this secret. To his amazement, he cupped the gold sand carefully.
Since then, the old man furti*ely fetched the gold sand once e*ery half a month or so, so he became rich soon.
When disco*ering his father's secret, his son ad*ised:If they widened the stone cre*ice for more mountian spring, more gold sand could be washed here. The old man thought it o*er and felt it ad*isable. So the father and son chiseled the narrow stone cre*ise so widely that the mountain spring was se*eral times than e*er. But unexpectedly, the gold sand didn't increase but disappeared e*er since.
They felt puzzled: Where had the gold sand gone?
一股细细的山泉沿着窄窄的石缝叮叮咚咚往下流淌，也不知道过了多少年，竟然在岩石上冲刷出一个鸡蛋大小的浅坑。

奇异的是，山泉不知从哪里冲来黄澄澄的金砂，渐渐的填满了小坑。

有一天，一位砍柴的老汉偶然发现了这个秘密，惊喜之下，他小心翼翼的捧走了金砂。

从此，老汉过个十天半月就偷偷来取一次金砂，日子很快富裕起
来。

老汉的儿子发现了父亲的秘密，他建议：拓宽石缝，扩大山泉，不是能冲来更多的金砂吗?老汉想了想，觉得有理，父子俩把窄窄的石缝拓宽了，山泉比原来大了几倍，谁知金砂不但没有增多，反而从此消失的无影无踪。

父子俩百思不得其解：金砂到哪里去了呢?

一颗小苹果树
A man walking in the night slipped from a rock. Afraid that he would fall down thousands of feet, because he knew that place was a *ery deep *alley, he took hold of a branch that was hanging o*er the rock. In the night all he couls see was a bottomless abyss. He shouted, his own shout reflected back--there was nobody to hear.
You can imagine that man and his whole night of scare. E*ery moment there was death, his hands were becoming cold, he was losing his grip...... and as the sun came out he looked down and he laughed. There was no abyss. Just six inches down there was a rock. He could ha*e rested the whole
night, slept well---the rock was big enough---but the whole night was anightmare.
Fear is only six inches deep. Now it is up to you whether you want to go on cling to the branch and turn your life into a nightmare, or whether you would lo*e to lea*e the branch and stand on your feet.
There is nothing to fear.
一个人在赶夜路时，突然从岩石上跌了下去，吓得他赶紧抓住了岩石上的树枝，因为他知道这一带有个深谷，一不小心就会跌入上千英尺的深渊。

一晚上，他能看到的就是深不见底的峡谷。

岩石那么大，他本可以在那儿休息一个晚上，美美的睡上一觉，但昨晚他却在梦魇中度过。

恐惧只是六英尺的距离而已。

接下来，到了你做决定的时候了：你是想要继续抓着树枝过梦魇一般的生活，还是更喜欢把手从树枝上松开，双脚着地?
真的没有什么好害怕的。
