【Script】 The Elements of Success
I don’t believe that there is any one recipe for success. Instead, I believe success is the result of a combination of a lot of different factors — and not all of them are needed for success. The more factors you have on your side, the more likely you are to succeed, and positive attitude is just one of those factors. Here are seven additional factors that are also important.

Unit1A common misconception among youngsters attending school is that their teachers were child prodigies. Who else but a bookworm, with none of the normal kid's tendency to play rather than study, would grow up to be a teacher anyway?I've tried desperately to explain to my students that the image they have of me as an enthusiastic devotee of books and homework during my adolescence was a bit out of focus. On the contrary, I hated compulsory education with a passion. I could never quite accept the notion of having to go to school while the fish were biting.
Unit 2Children are entitled to special consideration for two reasons: helplessness and innocence. They have not yet acquired either the faculty of reason or the wisdom of experience. Consequently, they are defenseless (incapable of fending for themselves) and blameless (incapable of real sin). That's why we grant them special protection. In an emergency, it is our duty to save them first because they, helpless, have put their lives in our hands. And in wartime, they are supposed to be protected by special immunity because they can have threatened or offended no one.孩子们之所以有权享受特殊照顾有两个理由:无助和无辜。

A. Back in the Game I will never forget the night in 1946 when disaster(灾难) and difficulty visited our home. My brother,Gorge, came home from football practice and fell ill with temperature of 40C. After an examination, the doctor informed us that it was polio(小儿麻痹症). Polio was well_known in Webster Groves, Missouri, having killed and crippled(使残废)many children there. The doctor felt(义不容辞的)to inform George of the terrible truth. "I hate to tell you this, son" he said, "but the polio is so bad that you will probably never walk again without a limp(跛行), and your left arm will useless." George had always pictured himself as a championship wrestler(摔跤冠军)in his senior year after just missing it as a junior. Barely able to speak, George whispered: "Doctor..." “Yes,” said the doctor leaning(倾斜)over the bed. “What is it, my boy?” "Go to hell(去见鬼吧)"said.George in a voice filled with determination. The doctor seemed shocked, but you see, Mom and Dad taught us that just like you would never like someone else come into with an ax ane break up your furniture, you should let a damaging thought come into your mind and break up your dreams. The next day, the nurse walked into George's room to find him lying flat on his face on the floor. "What's going on here?" asked the shocked nurse. "I'm walking." George calmly replied. Sometimes it would take George 20 minutes just to get out of the chair, but he refuses any offers of help. I remembered seeing him lift a tennis ball with much effort as.a healthy man would need to lift a 100_pound barbell(杠铃) I also remembered seeing him, six months later, step out on the mat as captain of the wrestling team.George's return from the horrible effects of polio was written on the newspapers all over the state of Missouri. No one had ever been known to recover so quickly or so completely from this disease. He had through hell and he came out of it with a soul as strong as steel. 1. When the doctor informed George that he had polio, the doctor believed that _ A. George could never stand up on his feet.again. B. George wouldn't survived the terrible disease. C. George should accept and be prepared for a disabled life. D. The worst result could push George to work even harder. 2. The tennis ball was meant for George to_ A. train himself to hit B. keep himself amused C. allow his left arm to recover faster D. help him to practice wrestling moves 3. Which words best describe George? A. careful and patient B. determined and positive C. close-mined(固执己见的)and rude D. proud and sensitive(敏感的) 4. The ar-tical conveys the message that_ A. We should.believe that miracles(奇迹)can happen B. only through difficulties can we become stronger C. we should not always follow doctor's conclusions D. miracles can.be created with strong determination
B. Never Separated We arrived at the airport just in time for my flight. "Well, here we are, " my sister said with a sigh. As I watched her unload my luggage, I could see the sadness in her eyes. WE had both been dreading this moment for the past week. One last hug and a final good-bye and I would be on my way to a new life abroad. By the time I reached the customs office I was sobbing(抽泣). While boarding the plane I was still crying. I didn't have energy to put my bag on the overhead locker(行李架), so I put it on the empty seat next.to mine. I felt like my best friend had been taken away from me. Growing up, my sister and I would do everything together. One sunny summer day, I was playing outside on the grass when she came up to me and said:"Want to come to the attic?" We both knew that the answer to that question was always "Yes". We were frightened of the attic but also fascinated by its smell and sounds. Whenever one of us needed something, the other one would come along. The plane shook heavily and the bag that I had shoved(推)onto the seat next to me fell on the floor. My aspirin, hairbrush and a copy of the book I planned to read were spread on the floor. I bent over to gather them up when I saw an unfamiliar little book in the middle of my belongings. It was not until I picked it up that I realized that it was a diary. Immediately I recognized my sister's handwriting. "Hi, Sis, what a day it has been today. First you let me know that you are moving abroad and then my boss..." Only then did I realize that my sister had been keeping a diary for the past month and that she was now passing it on to me I was to write in it for the next couple of months and then send it back to her. I spent the rest of the flight reading about my sister's comings and goings. And even though a large ocean separated us, it felt like she was actually there. It was only when I thought that I had lost my best friend that I realized that she was going to be with me forever. 1. When the author and her sister said good-bye to each other at the airport,_
