The author often gives irony and surprising ending. He let the theme sublimate. O’Henry was good at using psychological description of the human characters which reflected social background. A Brief Introduction to O’ HenryWilliam Sydney Porter (September 11, 1862-June 5, 1910), was known by his pen name O’ Henry. As a master of short stories, O’ Henry was called the American Guy De Maupassant. O’Henry’s short stories are known for their smart, wordplay, and clever twist ending. It roots in his rich experience of life.Throughout his life he wrote more than 300 short stories.His stories are great number of warm characterization and most of them are root in the real life. He shows us an style of the original and typical American democratic. He factually narrates a real America where the lower class lives in. All his stories make up constitute a true complete picture of American life.In order to learn more about O. Henry’s articles, we should pay some particular attention to what happened in his life and why he wrote stories such as The Cop and the Anthem. O. Henry, whose given name is William Sydney Porter, was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. When William was three, his mother died, and he was raised by his paternal grandmother and aunt. William was an avid reader, but at the age of fifteen he left school, and then worked in a drug store. He moved to Houston, where he had a number of jobs, including one as a bank clerk. In 1884 he started a humorous weekly publication called The Rolling Stone. When the paper failed, he joined the Houston Post as a reporter and columnist. In 1897 he was convicted of embezzling money, although there has been much debate over his actual guilt. In 1898 he entered a penitentiary at Columbus, Ohio.While in prison O. Henry started to write short stories to earn money to support his daughter Margaret. His first work, Whistling Dick's Christmas Stocking (1899), appeared in McClure's Magazine.2 After serving three years of his five year sentence, Porter emerged from the prison in 1901 and changed his name to O. Henry. He movedto New York City in 1902 and from December 1903 to January 1906 he wrote a story a week for the New York World, while also publishing in other magazines.Having dropped out of school, dealing with the loss of his wife, and being subjected to prison life, O. Henry was totally aware of the cruelty of being a “small potato” in society. His experience shows the majority people he met in daily life were those from the lower class of the society such as clerks, policemen, and waitresses. This helped him to get involved with the majority of the working class who are the real people who are face various kinds of stress every day. However, surprisingly, this is also where true love appears.In His most famous story, The Gift of the Magi3 he spins the tale of a young couple who are short of money but desperately want to buy each other Christmas gifts. The husband sells his only favorite watch to buy a set of combs for his wife, while she uses the money from selling her beautiful hair to buy him a pocket chain. The author arranges the entire plot just to make readers anticipate the excitement of the outcome. From the beginning, the readers keep guessing what the couple will buy for each other, and the irony of their gifts is the greatest suspense the author puts into this story. Finally the author gives the answer to the readers question in the ending: Mr. Henry found his love in the lower class of society which kept me wondering, “Where can we find the true love in our life?” Perhaps love is just like a story with a twisted ending; it might seem normal or even a bit sad from the outside, but to the people who are in the story, and those who are aware of the true meaning of love, happiness will remain in their heart for a long time.Even though O. Henry made some mistakes during his life, most people will still remember him as a prolific and prominent American short-story writer; a master of surprise endings. We are not allowed to judge a person only by his experiences; moreover, readers can always tell an author’s pers onality through his words. O. Smile with tears and laugh with touched heart--what mo re can we ask from life’s stories?B. A Brief Introduction to The Last Leaf1. The Main ContentThe last leaf is one of the O’Henry’s short story. In this paper, author strive to praise the great personality and character of the little people, and show them yearn for the good wishes of human world. Sue and Johnsy are good friend who have the same interests and hobbies. They shared a studio. However, Johnsy has got pneumonia that is slight of figure. Her lie weakly on the bed. Doctor told her friend Sue that her illness can heal only one percent of hope. And it’s up to her if she really wants to live. She always thinks about that she will never recover. Sue is so sad. She pretends to be a pleasure appearance of the spirit and begin to draw in the room. At first, she thought that Johnsy was sleep, until she heard her voice count. In the first place, she quickly fall the leaves in a few tree. Sue asked she why did that. Johnsy said that I would die when the last leaf falled down. Sue felt Johnsy’s idea was negative but can’t convince her. Sue turned to seek help and hope from Behrman. Behrman is a sixty-year-old man who lives on the ground floor under Johnsy and Sue. Although he has not managed to paint his masterpiece so far, he still insists on his painting work. The old man does care about Johnsy’s condition, and he does his bit to help her. Since that day, he begins to spend the rest of the day to paint his masterpiece on the brick wall. As time goes by, Johnsy realizes that the last leaf is still there and she is still alive. She is cheered up by the scene she sees. However, on that stormy night, Behrman catches pneumonia while he is painting his masterpiece, the old man, the unknown painter dies from a severe cold as his shoes and clothes are wet through.Last leaf, last love Yesterday I heard a heart-stirring story written by O Henry. It said in an autumn, a sad girl lied on the bed. She has a bad serious illness. And she would die soon. She looked attentively at a leaf outside the window, and told to an old painter who cared for her that she would die when the last leaf fell. The old painter didn’t want the young girl to die; he wanted to give her a wish to live. He knew that there would be a rainstorm soon; the leaf will be blown off. For continuing th e girl’s life, the old painter drew a green leaf on the wall when it rained heavily.2. The ThemeThroughout the whole story, we could known that a great number of emotion with each other. Johnsy and Sue were best friend who has the same hobbies, and they help each other. Although they live in poverty, they still in order to dream hard. Sue always care about Johnsy when she knew her friend got pneumonia. During cure Johnsy, Sue had been taking care of her and worry about her. In the same time, there has a vital person who is their neighbor Behrman. He was a good man. He always concerned about the girls, even paid through the nose for save Johnsy ’s life.From this short story, we can be summed up the three points.Firstly, showing the human indifference cruel in the realistic society. They are a group of struggle for the dream of artist. They live in the gutter. No one takes care about them when they suffer the pneumonia.Secondly, there are high praise of beauty and kindness for human nature. It is the life of the improvised instead of the accidental referring to the last leaf about the three painters. They would be great painters. Being in the low class of the society, they extremely long for success, and they make their best effort to create a masterpiece. They encourage each other, and be willing to make a sacrifice at any moment without hesitation. They will not fade next to the upper class because of poverty. The other way around, they are remarkable because of their fraternal love. And the priceless friendship is just like the ivy leaf which constitutes their noble spirit.The last, pursuit of the value of life. It is not only for the natural life to cherish, but also pursue for art life. Johnsy would know the life sense when she realized that Behrman saved her life. The poor own the spirit of unselfishness and sacrifice. Readers are glad and delighted to see the cheering up of Johnsy after losing Behrman.3. The Characters PersonalitySue is Johnsy’s roommate and an intimate friend who is described suc h an smart, optimistic, kind and friendly artist. She takes care of Johnsy and imagines her in her fight against the illness during this time.Johnsy is an excellent girl, but has a frail body. In fact, she is expecting to live ahappy and romantic life. She got pneumonia, life seems hopeless, however, she never loses hope for life and fight to stay alive even live longer. She counts the leaves, for she thinks about that she is going to die relative to the last leaf falling.At the very start, reader’s impression of Behrman is a man who is full of self- conceit. He has always wanted to finish his masterpiece, but finally nothing can be done. However, it is a complete surprise to all of us that the last leaf he painted brings back Johnsy’s life. In other words, he is a man who is warmhearted and emotional. Besides, he reflects humanity.Johnsy is a young woman from California who has come to New York to be an artist. Physically, all we really know about her is that she is small -- she is described as a "mite of a little woman."Emotionally, people would say that Johnsy is a little immature. A person who would convince herself that the span of her life is controlled by a leaf on a vine is not someone who thinks clearly.You might say she's mentally strong because she can convince herself to live or die. But it's a bit of a negative quality.Behrman is a person who wants others to be happy. Although when for the first time sue told him about Jhonsy's fantasies about the leaf, he reacted very badly and gave Jhonsy moral support which can be provided to her by preventing the last leaf from falling. He risked his life and painted a picture of the last leaf on the opposite wall in the terrible cold weather. he is a down to earth person and a gem in millions.The doctor, in fact, is so selfish. The Writing Features in The Last LeafO’ Henry is one of the leading short story writers, and the meaning he usually expresses has great originality of sample language. The language he uses is on the basis of the development of the plots, which is characterized with humorous words, vivid characters and strong regional features. He is also adept at creating figurative languages.The informal language that he uses always makes readers easily accept his views and easily understand what he wants to express. O’ Henry uses the informal language, hence readers will be easy to understand what he wants to express. Another characteristic of his language is significant. He can indirectly express the meaning of humor. Readers can still recall after reading. O’ Henry uses a great number of rhetoric in his short story, such as simile, metaphor and irony . Function of the Twist EndingIn his stories, O’ Henry tried to provide a true pictur e of American life. He could not ignore the indispensable part of reality. That was what the ordinary people believe the American dream. It is a national ethos of the United States. The American people believe that American was a big stage, it could make everybody gain success and wealth so long as he had enough courage and capacity. O’ Henry’s novel touch the broadest range of the society including the politic, economic and different culture. And from a different point of the world and society, he reflect the shinning side of theordinary people. These are all because of his experiences. He had gone through many failures and frustrations that he used to be a bookkeeper, a drugstore clerk, a Texas Ranger, an accountant, a draftsman, a bank teller and a newspaper columnist. Life was hardship that he was even thrown into prison. His experience let him understand the life was not easy and difficult world clearly. He usually felt sympathy for the lower- class people. So for O’ Henry, satire and praise were two ordinary themes in his works. And from the twist ending, the totally changed ending made the theme more obvious. So when we read O’ Henry’s short stories, we would have an ambivalent feeling that sometimes the plot is relaxing, and sometimes the plot was rushed. As for relaxing, just because O’ Henry’s w orks were referred to the ordinary people’s life; and as for rushed, root in the contrast between the beginning and the ending made the readers eagerly want to know the truth. That was the charm of twist ending.C. The Inversion Ending of The Last LeafIn this novel, he refused remorselessly and ruthlessly neighbor’s request who wanted to draw a picture of a classic works. He seemed listless who didn’t care when the patient counts the fallen leave to waiting death. After the stormy night, the last leaf still stands there. The last leaf lets her restore hope in life, and she began to recover. We believe that it just a common medical miracle. However, the heroine’s words made the plot reversal occurred. The dead leaf which was saved the life was drawing by rebarbative artist in stormy night. However, the old man got the pneumonia and died. The old man warms everyone. The last leaf not only gave the girl’s courage for a better life, but also moved every reader to tears. It was a beautiful and moving story.O’H enry’s story plots develop fast. At the end of the story, suddenly people’s psychology changes unexpectedly but reasonably, in unanimous with the reality of life. Although the affecting ending gives us the unprepared sorrow, we can only read and guess until find a gleam of hope. Those human virtues told us that life isparamount and thus promotes the theme. The end of the story suddenly reversed but reasonably as O’ Henry’s other stories. The author did not positively narrate Behrman’s painting the ivy leaf, at the end with Sue’s words told the truth.“I have something to tell you, white mouse,” she said. “Mr. Behrman died of pneumonia to-day in the hospital. He was ill only two days. The janitor found him the morning of the first day in his room downstairs helpless with pain. His shoes and clothing were wet through and icy cold. They couldn’t imagine where he had been on such a dreadful night. And then they found a lantern, still lighted, and a ladder that had been dragged from its place, and some scattered brushes, and a palette with green and yellow colors mixed on it, and —look out the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn’t you wonder why it never fluttered or moved when the wind blew? Ah, darling, it’s Behrman’s masterpiece —he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell.” (O’ Henry, 2010, p.252)The story suddenly stopped here. A mystery was revealed and the story reached its climax, which impacted on the ending. The author always went in lightly, without ups and downs, and then told a story to readers slowly and quietly. Nevertheless the end exposed some hints, which made readers suddenly comprehend. Because before it we could not see any clues that old painter painted leaf. We could not help thinking if the last leaf fell down, whe ther Johnsy’s life would end. But it was surprising! What was the leaf? What was the strength that made it miraculously never fall? He saved a life and created a miracle. The twist ending revealed the miracle of art. The final piece of ivy leaf was fully reflected this twist ending. That also resulted in a unique artistic charm. Aftertaste we could see Behrman was the real protagonist and the spirit of the story throughout.IV. ConclusionAs a great productive writer, O’ Henry enjoys a good reputation fo r his unique writing style, his work owns humorous words, unexpected ending parts which make him one of the three greatest short story masters in the world.The leading roles in O’ Henry’s short stories, such as The Gift of Magi, The Cop And The Anthem, A Service of Love, are ordinary people for the most part. His work describes their life and experiences and shows their lofty mind. He is concerned about the weakness of the poor, and says highly the good qualities of human being. The virtues of the characte rs are the things O’ Henry wants to convey through the stories which will stimulate the new generations to do the right things, which means a lot.Each story of O’ Henry is cleverly constructed, but what makes his work known as mentioned is the twist ending part. It is easy for the readers to go through a story, but it is a challenge to know the ending. Sometimes, the story ends just with the coming of the highlight, then leave the readers overwhelming. Reaction to an Article——Short Stories of O.Henry O.Henry is a nice master of short story at the twentieth century in America.His unique sense of humor is full of depression and sad emotions.Due to full of love.The story The Last Leaf described a young couple of good friends Sue and Joanna,who“found their tastes in art,chicory salad and bishop sleeves so congenial that they joint studio resulted”.Unfortunately,an unseen stranger,whom the doctors called Pneumonia,spread in the in that city and Joanna got it seriously.One day afternoon,Joanna was desperately looking out of the window Unknown to Jim, Della sells her most valuable possession, her beautiful hair, in order to buy platinum as the chain for Jim's watch; unknown to Della, Jim sells his most valuable possession, his watch, to buy jeweled combs for Della's hair. In the end ,both gifts became useless——short-haired Della got a comb andJim got a chain for an already-sold watch. What a surprising coincidence! However, when we look back, we can find that O.Henry had already given us some suggestions.”Now, there were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair.” This description is related to how they got the money for gifts and what they bought for each other. The author used a casual and vague tone deliberately so that few people would think over its meaning before seeing the ending. So the ending turns out to be unexpected but reasonable.This coincidence is filled with complex emotions. People feel touched by the long lasting true love between the young couple and at the same time ,pity for them for their “unwise” gifts and their cruel bitter life.Though confronted with cruel reality and dull daily routine, Della and Jim can never change their eagerness toward love. To them the most valuable material possession is so slight and insignificant ,when compared with the spiritual possession of love romance.Perhaps the gifts were "unwise" as the author says, but, as he further writes, "let it be said that of all who give gifts, these two were the wisest.”In Th e Gift of the Magi , we feel so pity that Della has her precious long hair cut. But to our surprise ,Jim has sold the watch to buy the jeweled tortoise-shell combs for her wife’s hair. O.Henry does not end on the note of irony and surprise but gives to what he calls his uneventful coincidence of two foolish children the appearance of a little parable with a significant meaning. The magi , he reminds the reader ,were wise men who brought gifts to the Christ child. As for Jim and Della, the are the magi.
