The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men's hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age.The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women's longevity may be linked to the fact that theirhearts do not lose their pumping power with age. "We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20--25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,”said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK."Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70,one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,”said Goldspink. "This is part of the ageing process."What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old woman's heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one's." This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men,” said Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80,focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart, said Goldspink. The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age.1. The underlined word “longevity" in the second paragraph probably refers to ______.A. healthB. long lifeC. ageingD. effect2. The text mainly talks about ______.A. men's heart cellsB. women's ageing process、C. the gender differenceD. hearts and long life3. If you want to live longer, you should __________.A. enable your heart to beat much fasterB. find out the reason for ageingC. exercise regularly to keep your heart healthyD. prevent your cells from being lost(B)Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about tea. People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like , mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake but many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwiches.Tea remained scarce and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century. During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea. Until then tea had been drunk withoutmilk in it, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk. Because she was such a great lady that her friends thought they must copy everything she did, they also drank their tea with milk in it. Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.At first, tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening. No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess (公爵夫⼈)found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o’clock stopped her getting “a sinking feeling”as she called it. She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so, tea-time was born .5.This passage mainly discusses __________. .A. the history of tea drinking in BritainB. how tea became a popular drink in BritainC. how the Britons got the habit of drinking teaD. how tea-time was born6.Tea became a popular drink in Britain ___________. .A. in the eighteenth centuryB. in the sixteenth centuryC. in the seventeenth centuryD. in the late seventeenth century7.People in Europe began to drink tea with milk because _________.A. it tasted like milkB. it tasted more pleasantC. it became a popular drinkD. The ones who look up every new word do not read fast. Therefore they do not have time to read much. Those who use small two-language dictionaries have the worst problems. Their dictionaries often give only one or two words as translations of English. But one English word often has many translations in a foreign language and one foreign word has many translations in English. The most successful students are those who use large college edition dictionaries with about 100,000 words but do not use them too often. When they are reading, these students first try to get the general idea and understand new words from the context. Then they reread and use the dictionary to look up only key words that they still do not understand. They use dictionaries more for writing. If they are not sure how to spell a word, or divide it into syllables (⾳节), they always use a dictionary. Also, if they think a noun might have an unusual plural form, they check these in a dictionary.13. Home is where we can remember pain, love, and some other experiences:We parted here; My parents met here;I won three championships here.If I close my eyes, I can still have a clear picture in mind of my first home. I can jump on it anytime—waking up my parents if I am scared or if I have an important announcement that cannot wait until the morning.I'm lucky because I know my first home still exists. It exists in my mind and heart, on a physical property(住宅)on West 64th street on the western edge of Los Angeles. It is proof I lived, I grew, and I learned.Sometimes when I feel lost,I lie down and shut my eyes, and I go home. I know it's where I'll find my family,my dogs, and my belongings. For example, trained observes obtain a very large amount of information about a star (e.g. distance, mass, size, rate of movement etc.) mainly from the accurate analysis of the simple lines that appear in a spectrum (光谱).He is skeptical (怀疑的) and he does not accept statements which are not based on the most complete evidence available –and therefore rejects authority as the sole basis for truth. Scientists always check statements and make experiments carefully and objectively to prove them.Furthermore, he is not only critical of the work of others, but also of his own, since he knows that man is the least reliable of scientific instruments and that a number of factors tend to disturb objective investigation.Lastly, he is highly imaginative since he often has to look for relationships in data which are not only complex but also frequently incomplete. Furthermore, he needs imagination if he wants to make hypotheses(假设)of how processes work and how events take place. These seem to be some of the ways in which a successful scientist thinks and acts.21. His father, supporting the decision, found a place for him in a supermarket. “You’re lucky, Ron, “he said. “ For every boy with a job these days, there’s a dozen with-out.” So Ron joined the working world at twenty pounds a week. For a year he spent his days filling shelves with tins of food. By the end of that time he was looking back on his school days as a time of great variety and satisfaction. He searched for an interest in his work, with little success. One fine day instead of going to work Ron got a lift on a lorry going south. With nine pounds in his pocket, a full heart and a great longing for the sea, he set out to make a better way for himself. That evening, in Bournemouth, he had a sandwich and a drink in a café run by an elderly man and his wife. Before he had finished the sandwich, the woman had taken him on for the rest of the summer, at twenty pounds a week, a room upstairs and three meals a day. The ease and speed of it rather took Ron’s breath away. At quiet times, Ron had to check the old man’s arithmetic in the records of the business. At the end of the season, he stayed on the coast. The building of the Bastille had been started in 1370 under Charles V. By the seventeenth century it had stopped to be important for defense. Cardinal Richelieu turned it into a prison. It was not an ordinary prison to punish common crimes. Its huge doors closed only on enemies of the King. The Bastille’s workings were secret. Prisoners were taken to it in closed vehicles. Soldiers on guard duty had to stand with their faces to the wall. No talking was allowed. Worst of all, a prisoner never knew if he would be there a day, a week, a year, or forever. Only the King’s letter could set him free.Over the years the number of arrests by King’s letter had become fewer. By the time of its fall, most of the prisoners were writers who had written against the corruptions (贪污腐败) of the government. Voltaire, the famous French writer, spent a year there in 1717-1718, and another 12 days in 1726.For those who believed in free speech and free thinking, the Bastille stood for everything evil. A fault is a fracture in the crust(地壳) of the earth along which rocks on one side have moved relative to those on the other side. Stresses in the earth’s outer layer push the side of the fault together, build up and the rocks slips suddenly, releasing energy in waves that travel though the rock to cause to cause the shaking that we feel during an earthquake.Earthquakes tend to be concentrated in narrow zones. There are 7 major crustal plates on earth, about 80 km thick, all in constant motion relative to one another. They move at between 10 and 130 mm per year.It is estimated that there are several million earthquakes in the world each year. Many of these earthquakes go undetected because they occur in the remote areas or have very small magnitudes(震级). The USGS Earthquake Information Center locates 12, 000 to 14,000 earthquakes each year (about 35 per day ). On average, about 60 earthquakes per year are classified as significant, with 19 classified as major. Families might use the time for a real family hour. Without the distraction of TV, they might sit around together after dinner and actually talk to one another. It is well known that many of our problems—everything, in fact, from the generation gap to the high divorce rate to some forms of mental illness--- are caused at least in part by failure to communicate. We do not tell each other what is disturbing us. The result is emotional difficulty of one kind or another. By using the quiet family hour to1discuss our problems, we might get to know each other better, and to like each other better.六(Reading comprehension(20ˊ)AFor some minutes, all was quiet in the street. Then from across the street someone came walking. It looked like a man of middle height, dressed in a big raincoat, a soft hat and rubber-soled boots or shoes, and making little sound whilewalking. No one was in sight. It was a street with two rows of aboutfifty small houses and there were three lamps on either side. The lamp nearest to the child’s house could be seen clearly, but the others were almost hidden by the smoky air. A car passed the end of the street and its lights showed faintly, but clearly enough to show the s mooth skin of a woman’s face. The car disappeared as the woman, wrapped up in her coat, reached the doorway of the child’s house. She put a key in the lock quickly, pushed the door open and stepped inside, then closed the door without looking round. She began to breathe hard. She leaned against the door for a moment, then straightened up as if with an effort, and walked towards the door of the front room, the passage leading to the kitchen, and the narrow staircase. She hesitated outside the door, then went up the stairs quickly but with hardly a sound. There was enough light from the narrow hall to show the four doors leading off a small landing(楼梯平台). Shepushed each door open in turn and shone a torch inside, and thelight fell upon beds, walls, furniture, a bathroom hand-basin, a mirror which flashed brightness back; but this was not what the woman was looking for. She turned away and went downstairs, and hesitated again at the foot of the stairs, then turned towards the kitchen. Clearly there was nothing there, or in the small washroom that she wanted. Two rooms remained; the front room and a smaller one next to it. She opened the front room door. After a moment, she saw the child’s bed and the child.1. Ten inches of rain may be enough for many plants to survive (存活)if the rain is spread throughout the year, If it falls, within one or two months and the rest of the yearis dry, those plants may die and a desert may form.Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller as wind and weather wear them down. Sand dunes (沙丘) are formed as winds move the sandacross the desert. Bit by bit, the dunes grow over the years, always moving with the winds and changing the shape. Most of them are only a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet high. There is, however, much more to a desert than sand. In the desertsof thesouthwestern United States, cliffs (悬崖) and deep valleys were formed fromthick mud that once lay beneath a sea more than millions of years ago. Over the centuries, the water dried up. Wind, sand , rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining rocks. The faces of the desert mountains are always changing —very, very slowly —as these forces of nature continue to work on the rock. Most deserts have a surprising variety of life. There are plants, animals and insects that :have adapted to life in the desert. During the heat of the day, a visitor may see very few signs of living things, but as the air begins to cool in the evening, the desert comes to life. As the sun begins to rise again in the sky, the desert once again becomes quiet and lonely.9. Many plants may survive in deserts when___________.A. the rain is spread out in a yearB. the rain falls only in a few weeksC. there is little rain in a yearD. it is dry all the year round 10. Sand dunes are formed when___________.A. sand piles up graduallyB. there is plenty of rain in a yearC. the sea has dried up over the yearsD. pieces of rock get smaller411. The underlined sentence in the third paragraph probably meansthat in a desert there is____________.A. too much sandB. more sand than beforeC. nothing except sandD. something else besides sand 12 It can be learned from the text that in a desert____________.A. there is no rainfall throughout the yearB. life exists in rough conditionsC. all sand dunes are a few feet highD. rocks are worn away only by wind and heatDLetter to Editor of TV WeeklyDear Sir/Madam,I read Alison Burnham’s review of When we were 12, and I do not agree withher. I thought the programme was wonderful — I found the old news picturesreally interesting — they helped to bring to life the stories the people were telling. The programme reminds me of many things from my own childhood. For example, one day when I was about five, I was going to school on the bus by myself (this was the late 1960s). My mother had given me exactly the right money for a return ticket. I held out my hand with the money init — one bigcoin on top of one little coin. The bus conductor took the big top coin only and she gave me a ticket, but it was a pink one for a single journey. I needed a white one for a return journey, but I was too frightened to say anything. When school finished for the day, Icouldn’t catch the bus home — I had to walk. As agrown-up, whenever I’ve been in a situation where I need to say something or take some action, this early memory of my bus ride comes back to me, and I’mable to take control of the situation.I would like to say to the director, Bret Chrysler, carry on making this kind of programme. Too much TV these days is quiz shows and so called “realityprogrammes”.I appreciate the human story that can make me laugh and cry.Yours faithfully,Chris Daniels13. What is Chris Daniels’ purpose of writing this letter?A. To persuade Bret Chrysler to turn away from quiz shows.B. To entertain other readers with old news pictures.C. To express his appreciation of the programme.D. To have his story told on the programme.14. Chris Daniels tells the story about the bus ticket to .A. describe how painful his early experience was5B. draw a direct response from Alison BurnhamC. show how the programme made him thinkD. teach the readers of TV Weekly a lesson15. According to the passage, Chris Daniels had to walk home because .A. he hadn’t got a return ticketB. he had lost his bus ticketC. he didn’t like big crowdsD. he missed the bus home16. What does Chris Daniels now think about his experience on the bus?A. He should have told the conductor then.B. He should have been well treated.C. He regrets going to school alone.D. He wishes it hadn’t happened.ET-shirts out; uniforms inSchool uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U.S.A. That’s no surprise, because they offer many benefits. They immediate ly end the powerful social sorting and labeling (标记) that come from clothing. If allstudents are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the “wrong” clothes. Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule — wanting to look just liketheir friends. The difference is that the clothing students choosefor themselves creates social barriers; school uniforms tear those barriers down.As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposesand duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform,he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol (象征) of law and order. The uniform means tothe wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets. People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education. Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children’s “creativity.” First, as noted above, the clothes studentschoose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality (个性). They justcopy their classmates. Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they’re in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and maths; this should take up all the creativity they have. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.17. In Paragraph 1, the word “benefits” probably means .6A. tasksB. messagesC. differencesD. advantages18. From the passage we learn that uniforms in general .A. prevent the wearers from being laughed atB. help the wearers keep their duties in mindC. are seen as a symbol of powerD. help to create social barriers19. Some people are against school uniforms because .A. they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniformsB. they believe that uniforms will make students less creativeC. they don’t agree that uniforms can remove social barriersD. they think that school uniforms are too popular20. The author would probably agree that .A. it makes no difference whether to wear school uniforms or notB. students’ individuality may not come from school educationC. students’ creativity is related to the clothes they chooseD. school uniforms help to create equality among students七、Cloze(10ˊ)On May 27, 1995, our life was suddenly changed. We do not tell each other what is disturbing us. The result is emotional difficulty of one kind or another. Reading ComprehensionNow let us look at how we read. When we read a printed text, our eyes move across a page in short, jerky movement. We recognize words usually when our eyes are still when they fixate. Each time they fixate, we see a group of words. This is known as the recognition span or the visual span. The length of time for which the eyes stop ---the duration of the fixation ----varies considerably from person to person. It also varies within any one person according to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text. Furthermore, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness. Unfortunately, in the past, many reading improvement courses have concentrated too much on how our eyes move across the printed page. As a result of this misleading emphasis on the purely visual aspects of reading, numerous exercises have been devised to train the eyes to see more words at one fixation. For instance, in some exercises, words are flashed on to a screen for, say, a tenth or a twentieth of a second. One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes on some central point, taking in the words on either side. Such word patterns are often constructed in the shape of rather steep pyramids so the reader takes in more and more words at each successive fixation. All these exercises are very clever, but it’s one thing to improve a person’s ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his abili ty to read a text efficiently. Reading requires the ability to understand the relationship between words. Consequently, for these reasons, many experts have now begun to question the usefulness of eye training, especially since any approach which trains a person to read isolated words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him in reading a continuous text.1. The time of the recognition span can be affected by the following facts except ________ .A. one’s familiarity with the textB. one’s purpose i n readingC. the length of a group of wordsD. lighting and tiredness2. Which of the following is NOT true?A. The visual span is a word or a group of words we see each time.B. Many experts began to question the efficiency of eye training.C. In countries where status is important, it is not advisable to invite people of different statuses to the same dinner party. Americans will often invite people to their homes. However in some societies the home is considered too private, unworthy, or too small to serve as a proper place for business entertaining. In some countries there is a “help yourself” method of entertaining done in the home. This method does not work well when entertaining people whose culture teaches them to wait to be asked three times before accepting an offer of food. In one instance, a Chinese guest went hungry all the evening without eating though he was quite hungry because he was too shy to take food after only being asked to do so once. In another case, an American woman executive(负责人)was being entertained in London. After having the tea served, the American woman helped herself to cream and sugar rather than waiting to be served. The English hostess was upset by the thought that she was not serving quickly enough. As a general rule, a small gift from your home country is OK.A gift that is tied to the particular interest of the person is especially good. Gifts for children are also well received. Be careful that the “hometown” gift you are bringing to Singapore was not made in Hong Kong. Because many gifts carry symbolic meanings, it is always best to seek the advice of a cultural information before selecting gifts. The giving of largegifts, or payments for special service, should only be carried out after talking with legal department in the home and host culture.1. It is no good inviting people of different social positions to the same party in the country where______.A. people don’t pay any attention to your positionsB. people care much about their statusesC. entertainment is importantD. entertainment is not advisable2. The Chinese guest is taken for an example to show ______.A. that offering food should not be made too earlyB. a “help yourself” method does work well in this caseC. that accepting an offer of food should be made laterD. a “help yourself” method does not work well in some cases3. The passage infers that American women like ______.A. a “help yourself” methodB. waiting to be servedC. a slow serviceD. cream and sugarBIf you have been joining in chat room conversations, or trading email with web pals (网友),you have become one of the millions who write in a peculiarly short form of English. And you’ve got a sense of humor about short forms like SOHF (= sense of humor failure)to describe Internet newcomers who don’t understand you.Across the globe, every night teenagers and their elders are talking online, many of them all talking at the same time. It’s fast: try talking to six people at once. It’s brief: three or four wo rds per exchange. It takes wit, concentration, and quick fingers. And it requires tremendous linguistic economy. There’s neither time nor spacefor explanations. Why consume precious key-strokes telling six friends you have to leave for a moment to take care of your little brother when BRB(= be right back)will do?Want to enter a conversation? Just type PMFJI (= pardon me for jumping in).Interested in whom you are talking to? Type A/S/L, the nearly universal request to know your pal’s age, sex and location. You may get 15/M/NY as a response from your pal.If something makes you laugh, say you are OTF (= on the floor),or LOL (= laughing out loud),or combing the two into ROTFL (= rolling on the floor laughing). And when it is time to get back to work or go to bed, you type GTG (= got to go)or TTYL (=talk to you later).People want to write as fast as possible, and they want to get their ideas across as quickly as they can. Capital letters are left in the dust, except when expressing emotion, as it takes, more time to hold down the “shift”key and capitals. Punctuation (标点)is going, too.4.
