1 Sentence Correction (10%)Instructions: Rewrite the following sentences without changing the intended meaning:l. I found the cat sleeping on the stove the dog was eating the morning meal.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________3. After three hours of practice, a large mug of beer was what the thirsty dancers wanted._________________________________________________________________4. An important thing for the student to remember is that when writing a paper, you should not plagiarize._________________________________________________________________5. To get ready for the trip, all the things she needed were put into a suitcase._________________________________________________________________Instructions: Read the following passages and tick the most appropriate choices:Passage AIt is evident that there is a close connection between the capacity to use language and the capacities covered by th e verb “to think”. Indeed, some writers have identified thinking with using words: Plato coined the saying, “In thinking the soul is talking to itsel f”; J. B. Watson reduced thinking to inhibited speech located in the minute movements or tensions of the physiological mechanisms involved in speaking; and although Ryle is careful to point out that there are many senses in which a person is said to think in which words are not in evidence, he has also said that saying something in a specific frame of mind is thinking a thought.experiments of the Wurzburg psychologists reported in Chapter Eight who showed that intelligent adaptive responses can occur in problem-solving situations without the use of either words or images of any kind. “Set” and“determining tendencies” operate without the actual use of language in helping us to think purposefully and intelligently.Again the study of speech disorders due to brain injury or disease suggests that patients can think without having adequate control over their language. Some patients, for example, fail to find the names of objects presented to them and are unable to describe simple events which they witness; they even find it difficult to interpret long written notices. But they succeed in playing games of chess or draughts. They can use the concepts needed for chess playing or draughts playing but are unable to use many of the concepts in ordinary language. How they manage to do this we do not know. Yet animals such as Kohler’s chimpanzees can solve problems by working out strategies such as the invention of implements or climbing aids when such animals have no language beyond a few warning cries. Intelligent or “insightful” behavior is not dependent in the case of monkeys on language skills: presumably human beings have various capacities for thinking situations which are likewise independent of language.1. According to the theory of “thought” devised by J. B. Watson, thinking is(A) talking to the soul. (B) suppressed speech.(C) speaking nonverbally. (D) nonlinguistic behavior.2. Why are patents with speech disorders able to think without having adequate control over language?(A) They use different concepts.(B) They do not think linguistically.(C) It still remains an unsolved problem.(D) Thinking is independent of language.5. An appropriate title for the essay would be(A) Speech Disorders And Thought(B) Linguistic Abilities And Thinking(C) Language And Thought(E) Language And IntelligencePassage BNor is the process purely Hegelian, a mistaken turn may cause one to lose ground; and besides, what critics are trying to illuminate may once, like Hamlet, have been clearer than it will ever be again. This is why you are never though with literature. Something is always being discovered that was never known, or was only half-known, or misinterpreted, or simply forgotten. And yet there is always available, in varying degrees of clarity, a great body of literature which has proven itself to sensitive readers.(B) to read and interpret literature.(D) All of the above.7. According to the author, in interpreting literature one should begin with(A) a tentative question.(B) a statement of purpose.(C) a tested hypothesis.(D) an emphatic assertion.8. According to the author, some literature does not lend itself to criticism because it(A) has been written in a foreign language.(B) is not truly literature.(C) may be clearer in itself than any analysis of it.(D) was written too long ago.III.

SECTION 1: READING COMPREHENSION (45 points)Directions: In this section, you will find two passages, each of which is followed by some questions. Read the passages carefully and then answer the questions in your own words on your Answer Sheet. Please note that each response should be limited to less than ten words in order to be valid.Questions 1 ~ 51. What is Bacon’s tripartite division of studies?2. What does the word “affectation” (Line 4) mean?3. What is B acon’s criterion for dividing books into three categories?4. What does the author think about Bacon’s ascribing certain virtues to individual fields of study?5. What characterizes Bacon’s “Of Studies”?Questions 6 ~ 15For me, scientific knowledge is divided into mathematical sciences, natural sciences or sciences dealing with the natural world (physical and biological sciences), and sciences dealing with mankind (psychology, sociology, all the sciences of cultural achievements, every kind of historical knowledge). Apart from these sciences is philosophy, about which we will talk later. In the first place, all this is pure or theoretical knowledge, sought only for the purpose of understanding, in order to fulfill the need to understand what is intrinsic and consubstantial to man. What distinguishes man from animal is that he knows and needs to know. If man did not know that the world existed, and the world was of a certain kind, that he was in the world and that he himself was of a certain kind, he wouldn’t be man. The technical aspects of applications of knowledge are equally necessary for man and are of the greatest importance, because they also contribute to defining him as man and permit him to pursue a life increasingly more truly human. But even while enjoying the results of technical progress, he must defend the primacy and autonomy of pure knowledge. Knowledge sought directly for its practical applications will have immediate and foreseeable success, but not the kind of important result whose revolutionary scope is in large part unforeseen, except by the imagination of the Utopians. Let me recall a well-known example. If the Greek mathematicians had not applied themselves to the investigation of conic section, zealously and without the least suspicion that it might someday be useful, it would not have been possible centuries later to navigate far from shore. The first men to study the nature of electricity could not imagine that their experiments, carried on because of mere intellectual curiosity, would eventually lead to modern electrical technology, without which we can scarcely conceive of contemporary life. Pure knowledge is valuable for its own sake, because the human spirit cannot resign itself to ignorance. But, in addition, it is the foundation for practical results that would not have been reached if this knowledge had not been sought disinterestedly.6. What does scientific knowledge consist of?8. Does the author include the study of literature among the sciences?9. What may we expect the author to discuss in the paragraph that follows this passage?10. What distinguishes man from animal?11. What does man seek pure or theoretical knowledge for?12. Were the Greeks who studied conic sections aware of the value of their studies?13. What is the best title for this passage?14. Does the practical scientist know the value of what he will discover?15. What does the word “disinterestedly” (Last line of this passage) probably mean?SECTION 2: CLOZE (25 points)Directions: In this section, you will find a passage with 25 words missing. Read the passage carefully and then fill in each of the blanks with ONE suitable word. Remember to write your responses on your Answer Sheet.I like the idea __(1)__ “the English (language) is like an English park, which is __(2)__ out Seemingly without any definite plan, and in __(3)__ you are allowed to walk everywhere __(4)__ to your fancy __(5)__ having to fear a stern keeper enforcing rigorous regulations.” Consider that th e same cultural soil, the Celtic-Roman-Saxon-Danish-Norman almalgam, which __(6)__ the English language also nourished the great principles of freedom and rights of __(7)__ in the modern world. In his famous Gettysburg address Abraham Lincoln described the conflict in terms of epic simplicity:Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers set forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether this nation, or any other nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. In the event, the war showed that the nation could endure-but only in a permanently changed and, in some respects, a deeply scarred form.Part B: Chinese-English TranslationDirections: Translate the following passage into English and write your version on yourAnswer Sheet.

Two skillful thieves one night entered the house of a wealthy knight, no less wise than worshipped in the community. The gentleman, hearing the noise of their feet in the house, awakened and suspected that they were thieves. They were upon the point of opening the door of the chamber where he lay, when he jogged her wife, awakened her, and whispered, “I hear the noise of thieves who have come to rob us. I would have you, therefore, asked me straight, and with great insistence, when and by what means I came by all I own. Ask me loudly and earnestly, and, as I shall appear reluctant, you must plead and wheedle until, at length, I shall yield and tell you.” The Lady, his wife, being wise, began in this mariner to question her husband - “O, dear sir. Grant me one thing this night that I have for so long desired to “know. Tell me how you have come by all these goods you now possess.” He,speaking at random and carelessly, scarce answered. Finally, after she kept pleading, he said, “I can but wonder, Madam, at what moves you to know my secrets. Be contented, then, to live well, to dress richly, and to be waited upon and served. I have heard that all things have ears, and that many things are spoken which are later repented. Therefore, I pray you, hold your peace.”2. In these strange old times, when fantastic dreams and madmen’s reveries were realized among the actual circumstances of life, two persons met together at an appointed hour and place. One was a lady, graceful in form and fair of features, though pale and troubled, and smitten with an untimely blight in what should have been the fullest bloom of her years; the other was an ancient and meanly dressed woman, of ill-favored aspect and so withered, shrunken and decrepit, that even the space since she began to decay must have exceeded the ordinary term of human existence. In the spot where they encountered, no mortal could observe them. Three little hills stood by each other, and down in the midst of them sunk a hollow basin, almost mathematicallycircular, two or three hundred feet in breadth, and of such depth that a stately cedar might but just be visible above the sides.Reverie: pleasant thoughts and dreams while awake.Decrepit: in bad conditions.III.

Today’s miners also have an instinctive intuition about beauty. But their wives don’t. Miners instinctively have a kind of vitality which hides deep inside their bodies. But on daytime, they seem downhearted and show no talent. As a matter of fact, they would rather see life from an instinctive and intuitive angle than facing rational life. They even don’t care about payments. Of course, it’s women who kept complaining about that. When I was a kid, miners spent at most a few hours under the sun everyday. In winter they couldn’t even see a thread of sunshine. When a husband went down the mine, the whole day belonged to his wife. There’re huge differences between a miner and his wife.2.

Indeed horror has its reason to appear. Now we’re in a changing era and we deeply feel the necessity of changing. We’re changing and we have to change. We couldn’t stop the change, as leaves turn yellow and fall off the trees in autumn and tubes can’t wait breaking through the soil to sprout new buds. We are changing and we are right in the throe of changes. This will be a great change. Instinct and intuition make us sense and realize the change. They are scared of changes as changes bring along pains. Meanwhile, nothing is predictable in critical transitional period and things alive are most vulnerable.。
