doubled wit h the introduction of a new method of agriculture. It brought abou t new types of grain li k e wheat and corn, and the wi d e use of c h e m ical fertilizers and farm machinery.Th e se factors were the cau s e of the early, great success of this“revol u tion”.However, the Gre e n Revolution methods no longer appear to be so succ e s s ful.T h ough the population continues to grow, food production has failed
to keep up wit h it.
The r e are a numb e r of reasons for this. One reason lies in the cost of the new farming methods. T he new kinds of se e d produc e mu c h mor e than traditional(传统的)seed, but on l y under certain c ond i tions. In order to produce as mu c h as possible, farme r s mu s t use large amounts of expensive c hemical fertilizers. They also ne e d to use expensive insecticides(杀虫剂)since the n e w grains are m ore easily damaged by i n se c ts.Expensive watering sys t ems are also necessary for t h ses grains,espe- cially in drier areas. Many farmers cannot afford to buy all the chemicals and e q ui p me n t.
Another reason for lower produ c tion is that farmers must use more and more chemicals to ke e p pr o-

T hese chemicals have other effects(影响)that are expensive in the long run.Th e y flow into the g round water, causing poll u tion and health prob l ems.As people learn abou t these problems,t h ey try
t o limit the use of chemicals. Finally, the Green Revolution has brought about social prob l ems that
h ave effe c ts on food produ c tion.Th e difficulty lies in the cost of the new agricultural methods.Only
t he larger landowne r s can afford the h i gh costs.With the mon e y they make,the la r ge la n down e rs then
b uy land from the smalle r farmers. This way,the la r ge la n down e rs become eve r richer and the numb e r
o f landless poo r people increases.Social prob l ems naturally increase in th i s situation.
Clearly,it is t i me to question the methods of the Green R e vol u https://www.360docs.net/doc/093851463.html,e r nmen t s and farmers n eed to look at the lon g-term effects.Th e y need to find new methods that will better me e t the needs of
