Unit 3 Celebration李仕才一、阅读理解AWinston Churchill is probably the most popular British prime minister ever. Having served as a soldier and politician, he is often considered among the greatest of Britons. While his heroic stand against the Nazis is well know, there are still a few facts about the popular politician that might surprise you.His CigarsThe classic image of Winston Churchill includes a giant cigar stuck between his lips. Churchill developed his love of cigars as a young man, when he traveled to Cuba. For the rest of his life, he smoked eight or nine cigars every day. However, he almost never took a puff(吸,抽), preferring to chew on the end until it went out, then relight it and start again. To prevent the cigar becoming soggy (湿软的), Churchill invented the "bellybando", a strip of brown paper which could be glued around the end.At any given time, Churchill had 3,000 to 4,000 cigars in his house, mostly his favorite Romeo & Juliet brand. On one occasion, the president of Cuba presented Churchill with 2,400 top-quality cigars, although his security team insisted one cigar from each box be sent off and tested for poison. Perhaps the story that best shows his love of cigars occurred during World War II, when he had a special oxygen mask designed so that he could still smoke his cigar on a high-altitude flight. His Black DogThroughout his life, Churchill probably suffered from depression, which he called his "black dog". At times, his depression was so severe that he didn’t like standing close to a passing train or looking at the ocean from a ship because he feared that he would commit suicide. When he was depressed, Churchill would almost spend a great deal of time in bed and lose his ability to concentrate. However, when not depressed, Churchill was full of energy, usually working and talking until the early hours of the morning. He often described how "all the colors come back into the picture".1. Why did Churchill’s security team insist on checking the cigars?A. To test if they were safe for Churchill.B. To see if they were of the best quality.C. To make sure they were Churchill’s favorite.D. To guarantee they were not out of date.2. Which of the following best shows Churchill’s love of cigars?A. He fell in love with cigars at a young age.B. He smoked many cigars every day.C. He invented the "bellybando".D. He had an oxygen mask specially designed for smoking.3. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?A. Churchill became energetic again.B. 选修6 Unit 3 A healthy life李仕才一、阅读理解In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition of each new skill-the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child: This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.Patents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child’s own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality. Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practice what they teach, their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.1.Eagerly watching the child’s acquisition of new skills ______.A. should be avoidedB.is universal among parentsC. sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD. will make him lose interest in learning new things2.In the process of children’s learning new skills, parents ______.A. should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB. should not expect too much of themC. should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD. should create as many learning opportunities as possible3.The second paragraph mainly tells us that ______.A. parents should be strict with their childrenB. parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the communityC. parental restrictions vary, and are not always intended for the benefit of the children aloneD. parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation4.In moral matters, parents should _______.A. observe the rules themselvesB.be aware of the marked difference between adults and childrenC. forbid things which have no foundation in moralityD. consistently ensure the security of their children【文章大意】在孩子的成长过程中,父母的教育与期望值要有一个“度”,不能揠苗助长;同时,父母也要以身作则,为孩子树立一个榜样。

Dear Mr.Shyamalan,According to the box office, congratulations are in order. It seems your new movie,Split,is doing gangbusters. That means millions of people all over the world have seen or will soon see your story about a man who is suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder(DID).As much as I'm rooting for you as an artist,Mr.Shyamalan, personally,I think you climbed to success on the overburdened backs of the mentally ill.As a person who suffers from multiple(多面的)personalities,as well as a psychologist with professional knowledge and skills in the subject,I feel it is my duty to school you in a few facts:People who suffer from DID are not, generally speaking, scary or cheating. We are normal people who silently suffer from a painful condition in which our sense of who we are feels divided into broken parts. Our condition is often caused by a history of severe and repeated child abuse. In truth,we are victims of unimaginable violence. With the release of your movie, you have become my bully(恃强凌弱者).I am personally harmed by the absurd fixed image you use in Split.Your description of Kevin Crumb as one more gender confused, crossdressing multiple with a liking for violence has the same effect as shouting across the playground,“People with DID are dangerous nut jobs!”I have lived for years with the shame created by movies such as yours.Despite being a successful doctor who runs a charity for adult survivors of child abuse,I live with constant anxiety that people will learn of my diagnosis(诊断).For no matter how long I've known someone or how highly they think of me,once they know I'm a multiple, the reaction is imaginable. In the future,I'd appreciate it if you stopped using our pain and suffering as materials for your entertainment.Michelle Stevens1.What does the author think of Shyamalan's success?A.His efforts paid off.B.He deserved it.C.He was very fortunate.D.He got it in an immoral way.2.What's the probable cause of DID?A.Alcohol abuse of parents.B.Ill treatment in childhood.C.Tense relations among people.D.Extreme anxiety from life.3.Who is Kevin Crumb according to the text?A.A friend of Mr.Shyamalan's.B.A character in Split.C.A patient of Michelle Stevens'.D.A psychologist with multiple personalities.4.What's the author's purpose in writing the text?A.To give the movie Split a review.B.To show respect for people with DID.C.To state that the movie Split hurt people with DID.D.To argue that people with DID can also make a difference.【解题导语】本文是一封书信。

Unit 3 A taste of English humour李仕才一、阅读理解With autumn on the horizon, the season’s first Oscar competitors are here. Already, the Hollywood Reporter has predicted that the often-snubbed(冷落的) Leonardo DiCaprio could win. Although before we get swept up in predictions, it’s nice to remember that little gold men are not the reason we love the movies. They shouldn’t be the primary reason for acting in them either.Bill Murray knows this first hand. Murray was positioned to win his first-ever Oscar Academy Award for 2004’s “Lost in Translation”, but he lost it to Sean Penn. Years later, Murray explained how he took the defeat in stride(从容应对), and his words should act as a blueprint for anyone who has failed:“I went through it once before and it’s nice to get n ominated and win some prizes. You get to go to dinners and tell little stories and so forth. Then you get to get dressed up. And then you get to be on TV, which is sweet. And you can either win or lose. Well you’re not supposed to say ‘lose’ when you talk about the Oscar. You are supposed to say ‘not chosen’. But I later realized that I had gotten a little caught up in the possibility of winning. So, shame on myself for getting caught in it. But I won a lot of the prizes for Lost in Translation. So I though t it didn’t seem unnatural to expect that I would be rewarded just one more time. So when it didn’t happen, I thought, ‘Well, that’s kind of funny.’ But to get prizes is not why you work.”Murray isn’t alone in those feelings. No mention of actors without Oscars would be complete without recognition of Leonardo DiCaprio, who said, “I don’t think I ever expected anything like an Oscar ever, to tell you the truth. That is not my motivation when I do these roles. I really am motivated by being able to work with great people and create a body of work that I can look back and be proud of.”Perhaps neither Murray nor DiCaprio will ever be introduced as an Academy Award-winning actor, but winning an Oscar for acting shouldn’t be the point. Here are some other amazing actors who never won an Oscar, even if you think they did:Julianne Moore, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Will Smith. And they have proved that countless times before.1.We can learn about Bill Murray from the passage that_________.A. he felt ashamed that he didn’t win the Oscar.B. he never expected himself to win the Oscar.C. he had already won many other awards before he failed in Oscar.D. he is the first actor who had been predicted to win the Oscar but failed.2.Leonard DiCaprio is motivated to act different roles because _________A. he wants to win the Oscar.B. he can cooperate with great people.C. he wants others to take pride in him.D. he is not the only actor who hasn’t won the Oscar.3.The underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refers to “_________”.A. Neither Murray nor DiCaprio will won an Oscar.B. Winning an Oscar for acting shouldn’t be the point.C. Some amazing actors have never won an Oscar.D. You think that some actors should have won an Oscar.4.What i s the writer’s attitude to Leonardo’s idea on winning an Oscar?A. Approving.B. CriticalC. Indifferent.D. If a city wants to hold the Olympics,it must submit a proposal to the IOC.After all proposals have been submitted, the IOC votes. If no city with the fewest votes is eliminated(淘汰),the voting continues, until a majority winner is determined.Typically, the Games are awarded several years in advance, allowing the winning city time to prepare for the Games. In selecting the site of the Olympic Games, the IOC considers a number of factors, and chiefly among them is which organizing committee seems most likely to stage the Games effectively. The IOC also considers which parts of the world have not yet hosted the Games. For instance,Tokyo, the host of the 1964 Summer Games, and Beijing, that of the 2008 Games, were chosen in part to popularize the Olympic movement in Asia.Because of the growing importance of television worldwide, the IOC in recent years has also taken into account the host city's time zone.Whenever the Games take place in the USA or Canada, for example,American television networks are willing to pay specially higher amounts for television rights because they can broadcast popular events live in the best viewing hours.Once the Games have been awarded,it is the duty of the local organizing committee—not the IOC or the NOC of the host city's country to provide them with money. This is often done with a part of the Olympic television revenues(收入),and corporate sponsorships, tickets sales, and other smaller revenue sources. In many cases there is also direct government support.Although many cities have gained amounts of money by hosting the Games, the Olympics can be financially risky. If the financial gains from the Games are less than expected, the city will be left with large debts.1.________ will be determined to host the Olympic Games by the IOC.A.A city that submits a proposalB.A majority winner in votingC.A city that has perfect time zoneD.One that hasn't hosted the Games2.If the Games take place in Canada,American television networks ________.A.will not pay for the Canadian television networksB.will be forbidden to broadcast live sporting eventsC.can't broadcast popular events live in the best viewing hoursD.are willing to pay much higher amounts for television rights3.According to the last paragraph, which following statement is true?A.The host city must be left with large debts.B.There is no financial risk in hosting the Olympic Games.C.The city may gain a lot of money.D.It is impossible that the host city couldn't make money.4.Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?A.Winner or loserB.Applying for host for the OlympicsC.How to host the Olympic GamesD.The Olympic Games【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了申办奥运会的流程。

Unit 3 The Million Pound Bank Note李仕才***阅读理解。

You’re in your office when you learn there’s someone with a gun wandering outside. You can hear gunshots and screams. What do you do?That’s the challenge for users of a new virtual (虚拟)reality program called SurviVR, designed to train employees how to deal with an active shooter situation in the workplace. The program works with HTC Vive, the virtual reality headset released earlier this year.An active shooter situation is when an armed person or people actively shoot in a small, populated area with the intention to kill. There were 20 such situations in the United States last year and 20 the year before, according to FBI statistics, resulting in a total of 231 deaths. This year saw the deadliest active shooter situation in US history, with 49 people killed in a nightclub in Orlando. In the training situation, users have four choices. They can lock themselves in the office. They can hide, perhaps in the office closet. They can run for an exit. Or they can use something in the office—a computer or a cup a pair of scissors-as a weapon to fight the shooter. This is an improvement on standard active shooter training. Gallo says, which typically teachers people to lock themselves in place and hide. The "lock down" method is often ineffective, he says, and has resulted in many deaths in recent years. In the training’s basic level, no one gets killed. But as the trainings become more advanced, players who make a wrong choice be shot. There’s no blood; the screen s imply turns black slowly. If this sounds terrifying, that’s the point, says Gallo. There are plenty of training programs to teach employees how to deal with workplace violence, sometimes involving role play with toy guns. But these trainings are basically games. Gallo says, with employees relaxed and even enjoying themselves. To teach people what they really need to know for an active shooter situation, they need to be scared."SurviVR will take the fear and turn it into confidence." Gallo says.1. 必修5 Unit 3 Life in the future李仕才一、阅读理解"I see you’ve got a bit of water on your coat,’’ said the man at the petrol station. ‘‘Is it raining out there?’’ ‘‘No. it’s pretty nice," I replied, checking my sleeve. "Oh, right. A pony(马驹) bit me earlier."As it happened, the bite was virtually painless: more the kind of small bite you might get from a naughty child. The pony responsible was queuing up for some ice cream in the car park near Haytor, and perhaps thought I’d jumped in ahead of him.The reason why the ponies here are naughty is that Haytor is a tourist — heavy area and tourists are constantly feeding the ponies foods, despite signs asking them not to. By feeding the ponies, tourists increase the risk of them getting hit by a car, and make t hem harder to gather during the area’s annual pony drift(迁移). The purpose of a pony drift is to gather them up so their health can be checked, the baby ones can be stopped from feeding on their mothers’ milk, and those who’ve gone beyond their limited area can be returned to their correct area. Some of them are also later sold, in order to limit the number of ponies according to the rules set by Natural England.Three weeks ago, I witnessed a small near—disaster a few miles west of here. While walking, I noticed a pony roll over on his back. "Hello!" I said to him, assuming he was just rolling for fun, but he was very still and, as I got closer, I saw him kicking his legs in the air and breathing heavily. I began to properly worry. about him. Fortuna tely, I managed to get in touch with a Dartmoor’s Livestock Protection officer and send her a photo. The officer immediately sent a local farmer out to check on the pony. The pony had actually been trapped between two rocks. The farmer freed him, and he began to run happily around again.Dartmoor has 1,000 or so ponies, who play a critical role in creating the diversity of species in this area. Many people are working hard to preserve these ponies, and trying to come up with plans to find a sustainable(可持续的) future for one of Dartmoor’s most financially—troubled elements.1.Why are tourists asked not to feed the ponies?A. To protect the tourists from being bitten.B. To keep the ponies off the petrol station.C. To avoid putting the ponies in danger.D. To prevent the ponies from fighting.2.One of the purposes of the annual pony drift is _________.A. to feed baby ponies on milkB. to control the number of poniesC. to expand the habitat for poniesD. to sell the ponies at a good price3.What was the author’s first reaction when he saw a pony roll on its back?A. If you want to slow aging, you might want to eat less. This finding is good news---if you were a mouse. The researchers studied mice, not people.John Price and other researchers studied two groups of mice. One group was able to eat as much as it wanted. The researchers limited what the mice in the other group ate. Their diet had 35 percent fewer calories than the first group of mice.Price says the mice with the diet restrictions were “more energetic and suffered fewer dis ease.” They were not just living longer but seemed to stay younger for a longer period of time. The researchers found that fewer calories slow down a natural mechanism in cells called ribosomes. Price explains that ribosomes are responsible for making important proteins in the cells. But with fewer calories, they slow down. This gives the cells more time to repair themselves. The researchers say ribosomes use from 10 to 20 percent of the cell’s energy to make those proteins. Price wrote that “because of thi s, it is impractical to destroy an entire ribosome” when it starts to break down. However, “repairing individual parts of the ribosome on a regular basis enables ribosomes to continue producing high quality proteins for longer than they would otherwise. This top quality production, in turn, keeps cells and the entire body functioning well.”Price said, “ribosome is a very complex machine, like a car.” They need “maintenance to replace the parts that wear out the fastest. When tires wear out,” he explained, “you don’t throw the whole car away and buy a new one. It costs less to replace the old tires.”“Food,” he said, “isn’t just material to be burned---it’s a signal that tells our body and cells how to respond.” Price said the findings help to explain how ex actly our bodies age. And this may “help us make more educated decisions about what we eat.”1.What can we know about the mice with limited calories from the study?A. They can keep healthy easilyB. They need more energy to be activeC. They can look younger than they areD. They will live a longer life like humans2.What will happen to ribosomes if there are fewer calories?A. They will completely break downB. They make proteins in the cells slowlyC. They will produce high quality proteins moreD. They may need more time to repair themselves3.Price explained the ribosomes’ role of repairing themselves by _________.A. telling a storyB. listing basic dataC. making comparisonsD. experimenting on mice4.What does the text mainly deal with?A.
