It is unprofitable to sell a product below the manufacturer’s pro duction costs and unfeasible to sell it at a price higher than that at which comparable merchandise is being offered. Other variables also affect pricing. Company policy may require a minimum profit on new product lines or a specified return on investment, or discounts may be offered on purchases in quantity.Attempts to maintain resale prices were facilitated for many years in the United States under federal and state fair trade laws. Since 1975, however, these laws have been nullified, thereby prohibiting manufacturers from controlling the prices set by wholesalers and retailers. Such control can still be maintained if the manufacturers wish to market directly through their own outlets, but this is seldom feasible except for the largest manufacturers.Attempts have also been made, generally at government insistence, to maintain product price competition in order to minimize the danger of injuring small businesses. Therefore, the legal department of a marketing organization reviews pricing decisions.21.The two basic components that affect product pricing are ______.A. the cost of manufacture and that of competition in sellingB. the costs of manufacture and those of competition in sellingC. the costs of manufacture and the status of competition in sellingD. the manufacturer’s production costs and those of the buyers22.It is ______ to sell a product at a price higher than that at which comparable merchandise is being offered.A. profitableB.uncertainC. unfeasibleD.feasible23.Which of the following statements is NOT right?A. BuyerswsC.MarketsD.Customers25.The legal department of a marketing organization reviews pricing decisions. The underlined word in this sentence means ______.A. restudiesB.remakesC.learnsD.inspectsQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:Of all the forces affecting modern marketing, perhaps none is more important than globalization. Since the 1980s,technological advances such as global telephone and computer networks have reduced geographic and even cultural distance. As a result, companies can now buy supplies and produce and sell goods in countries far from their home offices. Products conceived in one country are now being manufactured and then sold in many others. For example, Sony (Japan),Nestle (Switzerland), Bic (France), and V olkswagen (Germany) have become household words around the world.Although being able to market goods far from home presents corporations with many new opportunities, it also means they face new competition. Local companies that never even considered international competition now find foreign competitors stocked on shelves right alongside their own products. Some economists argue that local companies should be protected from such competition through legislation that regulates the flow of goods through trade barriers and other measures. Others oppose such regulation, arguing that it only raises prices for consumers.Globalization, however, is only one force changing the way companies market their products or services. Another involves changes in the very interests and desires of consumers themselves. Consumers today are more sophisticated than those of past generations. They attend school for a much longer period of time; they are exposed to newspapers, magazines, motion pictures, radio, television, and travel; and they have much greater interaction with other people. Their demands are more exacting, and their taste becomes more volatile. Markets tend to be segmented as each group calls for products suited to its particular tastes. “Positioning” the product—that is, determining the exact segment of the population that is likely to buy a product, and then developing a marketing campaign to enh ance the product’s image to fit that particular segment—requires great care and planning. This type of campaign is known as target marketing. Competition also has sharply intensified, as the number of firms engaged in producing similar products has increased. Each firm tries to differentiate its products from those of its competitors. Profit margins, meaning the profit percentages made by a business per dollar of sales, are constantly being lessened. Although costs continue to rise, competition tends to keep prices down. The result is a narrowing spread between costs and selling prices. An increase in a business’s salesvolume is necessary to maintain or raise profit.Another force affecting modern marketing is the influence of the consumer rights or consumer protection movement. This movement insists on safe, reputable, and reliable products and services. Both consumer groups and government agencies have intensified their scrutiny of products, chanllenging such diverse elements as product design, length and legitimacy of warranty, and promotional tactics. Warranty and guarantee practices, in particular, have been closely examined. New legislation has generally defined and extended the manufacturer’s responsibility for porduct performance.Environmental concerns have also affected product design and marketing, especially as the expense of product modification has increased the retail cost. Such forces, which have added to the friction between producer and consumer, must be understood by the marketer and integrated into a sound marketing program.Even the way a firm handles itself in public life—that is, how it reacts to social and political issues—has become significant. No longer may a corporation cloak its internal dec isions as private affairs. The public’s di ssatisfaction with the actions and attitudes of a firm has sometimes led to a reduction in sales; conversely, consumer enthusiasm, generated by a firm’s intentional establishment of a good public image or public relations, has led to increased sales.26.Of all the facotrs affecting modern marketing, the most important may be ______.A. computer networksB.global telephoneC. globalizationD.geographic differences27.People find that foreign competitors stocked their product on shelves right alongside their own products. This situation means ______.A. they face a new competition with the foreigners in the local marketB. local companies should ignore the international competitionC. economists should try to protect the local marketD. people should not buy the foreign products28.Positively speaking, globalization means ______.A. an important element to change the marketing ways of local products and servicesB. one way to make people attend school for a longer timeC. a force to protect the local marketD. an important factor to make people change their life style29.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A. Because the number of companies producing similar products has increased, competition has sharply intensified.B. The prices of products become higher because of competition.C. Each company tries to make different products to face the competition.D. Competition tends to keep prices down in spite of the high cost.30.All forces mentioned above, which have added to the friction between producer and consumer, must be understood by the marketer and integrated into a sound marketing program. Asia grew because it was the cheapest source for the low⁃tech consumer goods that the West craves. Hong Kong and Korea didn’t invent new or more efficient manufacturing techniques, they simply bought market share with low wages. But now Asia is beginning to cost too much.If you still thinkAsia is cheap or even a bargain, compare office rents in Shanghai with those in Chicago and Paris. Or try to hold a qualified manager in China against the almost weekly job offers he receives due to the shortage of Chinese professionals. No wonder companies are voting with their feet in response to Asia’s rising cost.Germany’s Siemens is dumping Singapore in favor of lower cost locations in the region. The way things are going,Siemens may have to move again before too long. The competition facing Asia is not going to let up,either Local council representatives from Britain are running all over the world advertising tax cuts, giving away state land and slashing bureaucracy in an effort to attract industry.Technological innovations and cost reduction in communications and transport mean that location isn’t as important as it once was.Only Singapore seems to understand that keeping up isn’t good enough and that being competitive means forging ahead. The Lion City made a concerted effort to open market, cut government regulations and create transparency. But most Asian government just don’t seem to understand the relationship between high costs and low competitiveness.Otherwise why would tariffs on agricultural imports be crippling the Korean and Japanese food processing industries? The oligarchical nature of trucking in Malaysia guarantees that high transport costs will drive business away.n economic growth was primarily based on cheap exports rather than high technology.22.Siemens is satisfied with Singapore’s low cost and will stay there all the time.23.High rents and shortage of professionals became China’s disadvantage in Business.24.The importance of location is weakened by technology and communication innovations.25.Most Asian government learned from Singapore to open markets and cut tariffs. 经常项目四㊁将下列英语单词或词组译成中文:本大题共10小题,每小题1分,共10分㊂36.market forces37.countertrademercial hub39.intellectual property right40.brain trust41.austerity programmes42.the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade43.discount rate44.countervailing duty45.dumping五㊁简答题:本大题共6小题,每小题3分,共18分㊂Passage1 Once, when Japan faced pressure from abroad,it would either give in reluctantly or keep quiet and hope that the fuss would die down.No longer it seems.America wants Japan to meet import targets for some American goods, but far from capitulating to the thrust of American trade policy, Japan is taking a stand that could lead to a trans-Pacific confrontation. The annual white paper on trade development published by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry will reject the argument that Japan needs special trade sanctions. It is Japan’s persistent surplus, more than anything, that has provoked anger in Washington. This year the surplus has been growing fast. With the economy still barely growing, despite two fiscal packages in the past nine months,Japan’s critics say that the country is once more exporting its way out of recession.46.Which word can give in”be replaced by?47.Explain the fuss would die down”.48.Paraphrase exporting its way out of recession”.Passage2 The price of tin on the European spot market rose to4,400pounds per ton, reflecting widespread production cuts in the world tin industry,at a two-day meeting in Indonesia, theassociation of tin-producing countries, whose members represent70percent of world tin output, decided to strengthen their co-operation in a bid to stabilize tin prices and to call on the United States to limit sales of tin from its strategic stockpile.Platinum progressed at the outset on concern about strike action in South African mines but quickly fell victim to profit-taking as work resume.49.What is strategic stockpile”?50.What does progress”mean in the context?51.What is profit-taking in business?
