高中英语Unit1ArtSectionIReadingandThinking测试新人教版选择性

Section ⅠReading and Thinking (1)阅读理解。
AWhat is great art? On the one hand, we can all see that great art is old art which is considered great. But how do we know which art of our own times is great, and which will be forgotten? And who decides? These are important questions, for the great art of the past often was not considered great during its own time. When Shakespeare and Charles Dickens were writing, for example, most critics considered them mediocre (平庸的) writers with little or no literary ability.Similarly, Van Gogh and many of the other Impressionist painters of the late nineteenth century were not allowed to participate in events involving what were thought to be the “real” painters of the time, and often they were very poor. Yet today their paintings often sell for millions of dollars, while those so-called “real” painters are now barely remembered. So what makes great art? Can, for example, rock music be great art? Music videos? Cartoons and comics? Those who called themselves critics of the fine arts often were the last to recognise great art in the past, and we can probably expect this to be the situation today.Critics often don’t see great art for what it is because they tend to be prejudiced against what is popular, as Shakespeare and Dickens were in their day. Popular works, whether novels, movies, or comics, are usually considered to be produced for the sake of money only, and not for the sake of art.But popularity, it seems to me, is one of three signs that a present-day work of art may come to be thought of as great. The other two are that it is groundbreaking, and that it is inherently(内在地) beautiful. Many works have one or even two of these qualities of being popular, unusual, or beautiful. Having all three often will mean that a work of art will someday be seen to be great, though it may take a good spoonful of time, such as a century or two, to know for sure.1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?A. To lead to the following, and arouse the readers’ curiosity.B. To introduce some real painters.C. To introduce how to appreciate great works.D. To explain what kind of art becomes popular.解析:推理判断题。

The fact that it is broadcast on a provincial satellite station instead of the large CCTV network has not prevented the program’s appeal from growing in the past three months. But now the weekly show has become an important part of people’s life. Tang is a loyal supporter of Li Yuchun, 21, who led the opinion poll (民意调查) in the previous rounds, and she has spent thousands of yuan as a fan of the show Super Girl. The top two leaders in the poll are Li and Zhou Bichang, 20, a Guangzhou -based college student. On the other hand, Zhang Liangying, acknowledged as the best singer of the competition, is trailing (落后) in the third position in the poll.“The magic is the accessibility of the show,” says Hong Bing, a researcher at Fudan University. “The digital era is certainly propelling (推动) the success of Super Girl. They may find that everything is different from the way things were at school. It is also possible that they will feel uncomfortable in both professional and social situations. Eventually, they realize that university classes can’t be the only preparation for all of the different situations that arise in the working world.Perhaps the best way to learn how to behave in the working world is to identify a worker you admire and observe his behavior. In doing so, you will be able to see what it is that you admire in this person. For example, you will observe how he acts in a crisis (紧要关头). Perhaps even more important, you will be able to see what is his approach to day-to-day situations. While you are observing your workmates, you should be asking yourself whether his behavior is like yours and how you can learn from his responses to a variety of situations. By watching and learning from a model, you will probably begin to identify and adopt good working habits.40. In the opinion of the author, the young people who have just graduated from school ________.A. will do better than their workmatesB. may not behave well in the working worldC. should be ready to help othersD. will find it easy to get along with their workmates41. From the passage we know that ________.A. young people are not well educated in universityB. the world should treat the young betterC. what young people have learned in university is not always fit for their new lifeD. young people don’t work hard at school43. Which is the best title of the passage?A. One is Never Too Old to LearnB. Learn and TeachC. Learn ForeverD. Learn from a ModelCReading is the key to success and, like any other skill, it takes practice.A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. A great athlete practices until he can play quickly, accurately, without thinking. Tennis players call that “being in the zone”. Educators call it “automaticity (自动性)”.A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and decoding (破解) the words. With practice, he stumbles (结巴) less and less, reading by the phrase. With automaticity, he doesn’t have to think about decoding the words, so he can concentrate on the meaning of the text. It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found automatic readers in the first grade were reading almost three times as fast as the other children, scoring twice as high on comprehension tests. At fifth grade, the automatic readers were reading twice as fast as the others, all still outscoring them oncomprehension and vocabulary.“It’s not IQ, but the amount of time as a child spends in reading that is the key to automaticity.” according to Rossman. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will reach automaticity. At home, where the average child spends 25 hours a week watching television, it can happen by turning off the TV set just one night in favor of reading. You can test your child by giving him a paragraph or two to read aloud - something unfamiliar but appropriate to his age. If he reads aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of sentences, he probably is an automatic reader. If he reads haltingly (犹豫地), one word at a time, without expression or meaning, he needs more practice.64. Which is the main idea of the first paragraph?A. What automaticity is.B. How a child learns to walk.C. How an athlete is trained.D. How accuracy is gained.45. The Illinois study shows that the automatic readers high speed ________.A. leads to their future successB. costs them a lot of workC. affects their comprehensionD.doesn’t affect their comprehen sion46. The underlined word “outscoring” in the second paragraph means ________.A. scoring higher thanB. scoring as low asC. scoring lower thanD. scoring as high as47. We judge whether a child is an automatic reader by seeing ________.A. whether he likes reading a paragraph which is appropriate to his ageB. how he reads a paragraph which is appropriate to his ageC. how long he spends watching TVD. whether he has a high IQDAlthough it doesn’t breathe fire, this dragon can fly. And what a be auty it is. By far the scariest thing about the dragonfly is its name. This double-winged, fast-flying insect is totally harmless. It has large, deep eyes that can detect the smallest movements. Its body may be bright blue and red or green. Dragonflies in flight look like dancing spots of color in the light of a midsummer’s day.The dragonfly has a long and respectable history. It is one of the first flying insects on the earth. Dragonflies live near the water. In fact, they lay their eggs right in the water.A dragonfly goes through several big changes before it becomes a flying insect. From the egg, a tiny creature called a nymph(幼虫) is hatched(孵化). It lives in the water, eating other small creatures that live in the pond. As the nymph grow, it becomes too big for its skin. Then it sheds (lose naturally)the skin that is too small for it. Soon it grows a new one. This molting happens several times, until the insect is fully grown. At this time it crawls up the stem of a water plant, out into the air. It squeezes its way out of its last skin as a full-fledged(成熟的) dragonfly. After going through all the changes, the dragonfly only lives for about a month. But for this short time it surprises the hot summer air with its bright beauty.48. The passage mainly tells us ________.A. dragonflies add to the beauty of hot summersB. insects that live near water are harmless and interestingC. dragonflies are harmless, beautiful insects with an interesting life cycleD. insects go through several changes before they can fly49. From the third paragraph we know that _______.A. young dragonfly nymphs eat their own skinB. young dragonfly nymphs eat their own eggsC. young dragonfly nymphs eat water plant stemsD. young dragonfly nymphs eat other pond creatures50. The underlined word “molting” in paragraph 3 means ________.A. hatching eggsB. shedding skinC. laying eggsD. producing nymphs第四节:阅读表达(阅读短文,回答以下五个问题,每小题3分,满分15分)Many sports are connected with specific countries. Baseball is considered America’s pastime, and Scotland is known as the “home of golf”.Many theories exist about how baseball came into Latin America from the north in the nineteenth century. Some believe the marines took it to Nicaragua; others say that oil workers went to Mexico, or sailors brought it to Cuba. However it happened, the region developed a great interest in the game and exported it further to neighboring countries such as Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and Panama.Golf came from Scotland. As early as the 1400s, small stones were knocked into rabbit holes using a stick or club. In 1744, the first set of golfing rules and regulations was created in Edinburgh. In the nearby town of St.Andrews, the Society of St. Andrews Golfers was formed. Later it became known as the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. Today, St. Andrews Links is one of the most famous courses in the world. In 1895, the United States Golf Association was formed, and by 1901 there were more than 1,000 golf courses in the U.S. Around this time, golfers from Scotland and England were invited to the U.S. to teach the sport to Americans. Since then, the U.S. has produced some of the world’s leading golfers, and the sport has fans worldwide.Skiing became popular worldwide in the early twentieth century. Although the oldest known ski was found in Sweden, it is believed that the people of Norway developed skiing into a sport in the early 1700s. After ski lifts were invented in the 1930s, skiing spread to other countries in Europe and became a popular winter pastime. Not all countries have been as triumphant at exporting their national pastimes, however. Japan, for example, has never managed to attract as much interest from the rest of the world in sumo wrestling(相扑).51. Give a title of this passage. (In English)52. How many kinds of sports are mentioned in the passage? Please write them down. (In English)53. What does the underlined word “triumphant” mean in the passage? (In Chinese)54. 把第三段的划线部分改成一个含有定语从句的句子。

Often my best matchmaking ideas come while I’m in the bath. Sometimes I have a really good idea about who might be with whom. Before I did matchmaking, I was a social worker, but I knew I wanted to do something without bosses telling me what to do and that I am good at dealing with people. Also I had seen too many broken marriages and too many people go downhill because they were so lonely. So I gave up my job, did a bit of research and started the matchmaking business in 1970.Over the last few years we’ve been doing introductions throughout Europe as well as here in Britain. Europeans want to meet British people. For every 100 people who come to us, about 65 will settle down. We keep going until clients (委托人) find someone that they get on very well with. Of course there are impossible people, those who will never settle.Sometimes I end up giving advice to clients. A few months ago, we had a highly paid scientist with a very nice face, but every woman refused to meet him a second time. It soon became clear that he did not like changing his shirts. So I had to be very honest and direct and told him, “But a woman can’t start to love you if your shirt smells.” The job is most satisfying when I get a call from a couple telling me they have fallen in love.1. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?A. On Being a MatchmakerB. Dealing with PeopleC. Matchmakers and ClientsD. The Most Satisfying Job2. What does the author mean by saying “I’m very organized”?A. She is especially capable of organizing things.B. She has a fixed plan for her everyday activities.C. She likes to remember things she has to do.D. She always finishes what she does on time.3. What was the personal factor that made the author change her job?A. She was warm and kind-hearted.B. She could understand people better than others.C. She liked to make her own decisions.D. She was interested in social problems.4. From the author’s experience given in the last paragraph, we can conclude that to be a good matchmaker, sometimes it is better for one to be ____.A. directB. kindC. hard workingD. organized7,We have saved as a final set of emotions the two most important emotions (情感) towards other people: love and its opposite, hate. Love can be seen everywhere. Yet surprisingly, love has been the subject of less scientific research than other emotions, such as anger and fear. The reason for this may be twofold. First, love is a very complex (复杂的) emotion, difficult to describe and measure. Secondly, unlike many extreme emotions, extreme love is generally not a problem; thus less medical attention has been paid to it.What is love? This is a complex question and requires a complex answer. Love is a lasting, strong, positive attraction and feeling for another person or thing. But it is more than this. It also includes feelings of caring, protection and excitement. When two people are in love, they feel drawn to one another; they greatly enjoy each other’s company; and they may be sexually attracted to one another.Sometimes it is easier to think in terms of different kinds of love: “puppy”love, romantic love, brotherly love, and so forth.Though they differ in some respects, they share one important characteristic: a strong positive feeling toward another. Our feelings toward other people are often complex. We may love someone and, at the same time, be angry with him. Or we may love someone, even though we envy him. We might even love someone and, at the same time, hate him for some specific reason. Hate is a strong negative emotion toward someone, and is due to anger, or some other factor. Like love, hate can be a very strong emotion. It can also be very dangerous. The question is often asked, “Is it bad to hate?” The best answer is probably “sometimes yes and sometimes no.” Usually hate does not help us; it makes us feel unhappy and makes us do things that may hurt others. However, sometimes it may be necessary to hate and hurt someone in order to protect loved ones.1.In the parts previous to the passage you’ve just read, the author has probably been discussing ____.A. the two most important human emotions---love and hateB. some emotions that are only produced by animalsC. some other sets of human emotions than of love and hateD. none of the above2. According to the passage, the emotion of love has been medically paid less attention to because ____.A. it is too common to be talked aboutB. compared with other kinds of emotions, love is not so importantC. the study of love needs great effort and advanced scientific researchD. love is harmless and too complex for description3.From the passage, we can conclude that when two people are in love, they ____.A. will never be angry with or hate each otherB. are strongly attracted to each otherC. will not envy each otherD. tend to do all of the above4.Which of the following might best be used as the title for the passage?A. Two Most Important Emotions Towards Others.B. Love More and Hate Less.C. The Great Benefits of Love and the Serious Harm of Hate.D. Some Advice to Those Who Are In Love.8,Every pet owner loves his pet. There is no argument here. But when we asked our readers whether they would clone their beloved animals, the responses were split almost down the middle. Of the 228 readers who answered it, 108 would clone, 111 would not and nine weighed each side without offering an opinion.Clearly, from readers’response, this is an issue that reaches deeply into both the joy and eventual sadness of owning a pet. It speaks, as well, to people’s widely differing expectations over the developing scientific procedure. Most of the respondents who favored the idea strongly believed it would produce at least a close copy of the original; many felt the process would actually return an exact copy. Those on the otherside, however, held little hope a clone could never truly recreate a pet, many simply didn’t wish to go against the natural law of life and death. Both sides expressed equal love for their animals. More than a few respondents owned “the best dog/cat in the world”. They thought of their pets as their “best friend”, “a member of the family,”“the light of my life.”They told moving stories of pets’heroism, intelligence and selfless devotion.Little wonders the loss is so disturbing---and the cloning so attractive. “People become very close to their animals, and the loss can be just as hard to bear as when a friend or family member dies,” says Gary Kowalski, author of Goodbye, Friend: Healing Wisdom for Anyone Who Has Ever Lost a Pet. “For me, cloning feels like an attempt to turn death away…It’s understandable. Death is always painful. It’s difficult to deal with. It’s hard to accept.”But would cloning reduce the blow? This question seemed to be at the heart of this problem.1.So far as the cloning of pets is concerned, a recent survey shows that, of all pet owners, ____.A. a lot more of them are for itB. a lot more of them are against itC. very few of them are willing to tell their opinionsD. about half of them are for it and the other half against it2.While talking about the respondents from the readers, the expression “eventual sadness of owning a pet” refers to ____.A. the death of one’s petB. the high cost of owning a petC. the troubles one has to deal with in keeping a petD. the dangers involved in the cloning of a pet3.In spite of their differences on the problem of cloning, it seems that ____.A. all pet owners love their pets very muchB. all pet owners try to go against the natural law of life and deathC. people who support cloning love their pets moreD. people who dislike cloning love their pets more4.From what Gary Kowalski says, we can know that he ____.A. has never thought about the problem of cloningB. is going to write another book on petsC. is in favor of the idea of cloning petsD. is all against the cloning of pets5.What is the key question at the heart of the problem of cloning pets?A. Can cloning make the pain one suffers less when a pet dies?B. Can pet owners afford the cost of cloning?C. Does cloning go against the law of nature?D. How reliably does cloning produce an exact copy of one’s pet?9,How can you find out what is going on inside a person’s body without opening the patient up? Regular X-ray can show a lot. CAT scans (扫描) can show even more. They can give a three-dimensional (三维的) view of body organs (器官).What is CAT scan? CAT stands for Computerized Axial Topography (层面X线照相术). It is a special X-ray machine that obtains a 360 degree picture of a small area of a patient’s body.Doctors use X-rays to study and diagnose (discover the nature of) diseases and injuries within the body. X-rays can learn the position of foreign objects inside the body or take pictures of some inside organs---if special liquids are added to the organs to be X-rayed.A CAT scanner, however, uses a light of X-rays to give a cross-sectional (横断面的) view of a specific part of the body.A fine light of X-rays is scanned across the body and turned around the patient from many different positions. A computer collects the information from each position and produces a clearcross-sectional image on a screen. This image is then photographed for later use. Several cross-sections, taken one after another, can give clear “photo” of the entire body organs. The newest CAT scanners can even give clear pictures of active, moving organs, just as a fast action camera can “stop the action”, giving clear pictures of what appears unclear to the eye. And because of the 360-degree pictures, CAT scans show 3 dimensional views of organs in a manner that was only made known during an operation or an examination a dead patient.Too much X-ray can cause skin burns, cancer or other damage to the body. Yet CAT scans actually don’t expose (使暴露) the patient to more radiation (辐射) than regular X-rays do. CAT scans can also be done without injecting liquids into the patient so they are less risky than regular X-ray procedures.CAT scans provide accurate, detailed information. They can find such a thing as bleeding inside the brain. They are helping to save lives.1. What is NOT true of a CAT scan?A. It makes use of computer techniques.B. It gives clear images of active, moving body parts.C. It can stop the action of an organ for some time.D. It is safer than regular X-ray procedures.2. What is special about the latest CAT scanners?A. It won’t cause serious skin burns, cancer or other damage to the body.D. It can take 3-dimensional pictures of inside organs.3. It is implied but not directly stated in the passage that ____.A. CAT scanners can take photos of either the whole body or one part of itB. CAT scanners do not need the injection of liquidsC. CAT scanners are more expensive than regular X-ray proceduresD. the patient can be exposed to a slight amount of radiation safely4. The best title for the passage might be ____.A.
