Self-control is at the root of all the advantages. Let a man give in to his impulses(冲动) and feelings, and from that moment he gives up his moral(道德) freedom.A single angry word has lost many friends. When Socrates found in himself any temper or anger, he would check it by speaking low in order to control himself. If you are conscious of being angry, keep your mouth shut so that you can hold back rising anger. Many a person has dropped dead in great anger. Fits of anger bring fits of disease. “Whom the gods would destroy they first make them mad.” “Keep cool,” says George Herbert, “for f ierceness(狂怒) makes error a fault.”To be angry with a weak man is to prove that you are not strong yourself. “Anger,” says Pythagoras, “brings with folly and ends with regret.” You must measure the strength of a man by the power of the feelings he conquers, not by the power of those which conquer him.Self-control is man‟s last and greatest victory. If a man lacks self-control he seems to lack everything. Without it he can have no patience, no power to govern himself; he can have no self-confidence, for he will always be controlled by his strongest feeling. If he lacks self-control, the very backbone and nerve of character are lacking also.65. What does the reader learn from the first paragraph?A. We need an organization to help beat down the persistent campaigns of grandchildless parents. It‟s time to establish Planned Grandparenthood, which would have many global and local benefits.Part of its mission would be to promote the risks and realities associated with being a grandparent. The staff would include depressed grandparents who would explain how grandkids break lamps, bite, scream and kick. Others would detail how an hour of baby-sitting often turns into a crying marathon. More grandparents would testify (作证) that they had to pay for their grandchild‟s expensive college education.Planned grandparenthood‟s carefully written literature would detail all the joys of grandchild-free life: a calm living room, extra money for luxuries during the golden years, etc. Potential grandparents would be reminded that, without grandchildren around, it‟s possible to have a conversation with your kids, who —— incidentally —— would have more time for their own parents.Meanwhile, most children are vulnerable (易受伤害的) to the enormous influence exerted by grandchildless parents aiming to persuade their kids to produce children. They will take a call from a persistent parent, even if they‟re loaded with works. In addition, some parents make handsome money offers pa yable upon the grandchild‟s birth. Sometimes these gifts not only cover expenses associated with the infant‟s birth, but extras, too, like a vacation. In any case, cash gifts can weaken the resolve of even the noblest person. At Planned Grandparenthood, children targeted by their parents to reproduce could obtain information about the madness of having their own kids. The psychological and economic costs of childbearing would be emphasized. The symptoms of morning sickness would be listed and horrors of childbirth pictured. A monthly newsletter would contain stories about overwhelmed parents and offer guidance on how childless adults can respond to the different methods that would-be grandparents employ. When I think about all the problems of our overpopulated world and look at our boy grabbingat the lamp by the sofa, I wish I could have turned to Planned Grandparenthood when my parents were putting the grandchild squeeze on me.If I could have, I might not be in this parenthood difficult situat ion. But here‟s the crazy irony,I don‟t want my child-free life back.72. Planned Grandparenthood would include depressed grandparents on its staff in order to______.A. show them the joy of life grandparents may have in raising grandchildrenB. draw attention to the troubles and difficulties grandchildren may causeC. share their experience in raising grandchildren in a more scientific wayD. help raise funds to cover the high expense of education for grandchildren73. According to the passage, some couples may eventually choose to have children because______.A. they find it hard to resist the carrot-and-stick approach of their parentsB. they have learned from other parents about the joys of having childrenC. they feel more and more lonely ad they grow olderD. they have found it irrational to remain childless74. By saying “…my parents were putting the grandchild squeeze on me”, the author meansthat ______.A. her parents kept pressuring her to have a childB. her parents liked to have a grandchild in their armsC. her parents asked her to save for the expenses of raising a childD. her parents kept blame her for her child‟s bad behavior75. What does the author really think of the idea of having child?A. It does more harm than good.B. It contributes to overpopulation.C. It is troublesome but rewarding.D. It is a psychological disaster.Section CDirections: Read the following passage and choose the most suitable heading from A—F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.76. ___________There is considerable variety in university classroom in the United States. Because of diverse teaching methods and non-standardized curricula, no two courses are the same. Undergraduate courses are considerably different from graduate courses. The classroom atmosphere in expensive, private universities may differ from that in community colleges which are free and open to everyone.77. ___________Participation in the classroom is not only accepted but also expected of the student in many courses. Some professors base part of the final grade on the student‟s oral participation. Althoughthere are formal lectures during which the student has a passive role (i.e., listening and taking notes), many courses are organized around classroom discussions, student questions, and informal lectures.78. ___________Many teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with the student. If a long reading assignment is given, instructor expects students to be familiar with the information in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or give an examination. (Courses are not designed merely for students to pass exams.) The ideal student is considered to be one who is motivated to learn for the sake of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades.79. ___________Ideally, the teacher-student relationship at universities is characterized by trust. The honor system, put forward by the teacher and the university demands that the student be honest in all areas of school work. Thus , cheating on tests, plagiarizing (抄袭) in written work, presenting others‟ ideas as original, and turning in homework completed by someone else are all prohibited.80. ___________Relationships between students in the classroom can be cooperative or competitive. International students should not hesitate to ask for help if it is needed. There are courses, however, where grades are calculated in relation to other student‟s scores. Therefore, in classes where such a grading curve is used, students may be reluctant to share lecture notes or information for fear that their own grades will suffer.Section DNow custom has not been commonly regarded as a subject of any great importance. The inner workings of our own brains we feel to be uniquely worthy of investigation, but custom, we have a way of thinking, is behavior at its most common. As a matter of fact, it is the other way around. Traditional custom, taken the world over, is a mass of detailed behavior more astonishing than what any one person can ever evolve in individual actions. Yet that is a rather insignificant aspect of the matter. The fact of first-rate importance is the important role that custom plays in experience and in belief and the very great varieties it may show.No man ever looks at the world with pristine (未受外界影响的) eyes. He sees it edited by a definite set of customs and institutions and ways of thinking. Even in his philosophical exploration he cannot go behind these stereotypes (固定的模式); his very concepts of the true and the false will still have reference to his particular traditional customs. John Dewey has said in all seriousness that the part played by custom in shaping the behavior of the individual as over against any way in which he can affect traditional customs, is as the proportion of the total vocabulary of his mother tongue over against those words of his own baby talk that are taken up into the language of his family. When one seriously studies social orders that have had the opportunity to develop independently, the figure (比喻) becomes no more than an exact and matter-of-fact observation. The life history of the individual is first and foremost an adjustment to the patterns and standards traditionally handed down in his community. From the moment of his birth the customs into which he is born shape his experience and behavior. By the time he can talk, he is the little creature of his culture, and by the time he is grown and able to take part in its activities, its habits are his habits, its beliefs his beliefs, its impossibilities his impossibilities.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)81. Custom because people are still not aware of the important role that custom plays in forming our world outlook.82. According to John Dewey one‟s baby talk as a child can his or her mother tongue.83. As one grows, he or she of behavior of community.84. The author‟s purpose in writing the passage is . 第II卷I. Translation: 20%1.

A What is politeness? This sounds like a simple question. In daily life, we often make judgments about what is polite and what is not polite. For example, to offer your seat to the elderly on a bus is considered polite behavior, and to interrupt when someone is talking is considered impolite; to greet someone the first time you meet him in the morning is polite and to stand up to reach for the dish you want at a dinner table is impolite. So politeness can first of all be regarded as a phenomenon, an observable social phenomenon. What I would like to propose is that as an observable social phenomenon, politeness is something superficial, but to account for what is understood at the surface, we should dig into the depth where different cultural values are rooted. When being complimented (赞美), an English-speaking person would readily accept the compliment by saying something like "Thank you" to show his appreciation of the praise, but a Chinese speaker wouldtry to deny the truth of the compliment. They both think they are behaving properly. Yet neither of them would think the other is being polite. The English speaker is being polite to the extent that by accepting and showing appreciation of the compliment, and he avoids hurting the positive face of the person who makes it; the Chinese speaker is showing modesty by denigrating himself, ignoring the fact of the compliment paid to him. As has been mentioned, self-denigration has been at the core of the Chinese understanding of politeness for over two thousand years. The Chinese, in order to show modesty, will go to such lengths as to underrate what he himself has achieved and deny the truth of a complimentary remark. 1. According to the first paragraph, politeness can be briefly described as_____.A. proper social phenomenaB. being modestC. showing appreciationD. an observable social phenomenon 2. In the author's opinion, the nature of politeness lies in ________.A. something superficialB. what is understood at the surfaceC. different cultural valuesD. the root of different thoughts 3. The underlined word "denigrate" in the passage means ________.A. appreciateB. denyC. ignoreD. compliment 4. Which of the following is TRUE? A. Chinese speakers dislike being complimented. B. English-speaking people are reluctant to accept compliment. C. Chinese tend to show politeness and modesty by denying the truth of praise. D. Chinese people think highly of British politeness while English people think poorly of Chinese politeness. 5. What’s the author’s attitude towards Chinese politeness?A. Approving.B. Objective.C. Optimistic.D. Critical BSAN FRANCISCO — In the western U.S., Hawaii and elsewhere across the globe, moon watchers were treated Saturday to a rare celestial phenomenon: a total lunar eclipse (月食). For about 50 minutes starting at 6:06 a.m. PST, the moon was completely blocked by the Earth's shadow. With only some indirect sunlight able to reach it after passing through the Earth's atmosphere, the moon took on a reddish glow. Since the atmosphere scatters blue light, only red light strikes the moon, giving it a dark red color. Dally Sam, who runs a public relations firm in Hawaii, said it had been cloudy and rainy, but the weather cleared just in time for the eclipse. Around 3 a.m., he awoke, as he usually does, and remembered to step outside the house in time to catch the eclipse about a half hour later. No one else in the neighborhood was up. "It was turning that dark red color," Sayre, 47, said, "I’d better grab a camera. To be able to seeit just right outside our house was really cool." At the local observatory in Los Angeles, some 300 people, many clutching coffee cups in the cold morning air, sat with blankets and chairs on the observatory's great lawn. "It's really a celestial festival out here," John Peter, 39, told the Los Angeles Times as he set up his camera. Lying on a slope north of downtown near the Hollywood sign, the place offers clear views of the sky. Observatory officials alerted the crowd when the eclipse began and spontaneous applause erupted when the celestial event ended.
从能力的层次来讲,也有3个档次:Identification(辨识能力),Retention(记忆能力),Deduction(推导能力)。
7.目前高考听力测试中短文理解大部分是记叙文或讲话稿,所以听录音时重在听懂每句话的意思和内涵,注意捕捉文中所涉及的人物(who)、事件(what)、时间(when)、地点(where)、原因(why)、方式(how)、程度(how long,how soon,how much)、数字(how many,how much)、选择(which)等,以便检查答案。
Whom was it up to ________the matter?A. decideB. to decideC. decidingD. decided答案B。
这里有“it is up to sb. to do sth.” Whom/was it up to/to decide the matter?
What he did suggested that he ________little education.A. receiveB. receivedC. should receiveD. receives题干中的suggest若作“建议”讲,则A、C两个选项均为正确答案,所以这个假设不能成立。
如:—Would you like some tea?—________.A. Of course notB. No, thanksC. It doesn't matterD.
And there on a well-made bed sat Amy, my new ______, dressed neatly.A. roommateB. classmateC. neighborD. companion题解:选A. roommate指“同住宿舍一室的人”。
Angela had to________out whether the students would like to do that.A. callB. findC. carryD. point【答案】B题解:call out“出动”,carry out“执行”,point out“指出”,都与句意不符,find out “打听,弄清楚”,“Angela必须要弄清楚学生们是否喜欢这样做”符合句意。
She had never thought she was good enough at anything to ________much attention.A. avoidB. focusC. payD. attract【答案】D根据上句She had never thought she was good enough at anything...
Being alone in outer space can be frightening. That is one reason why astronauts on solo(单独的)space flight were given plenty of work to keep them ________.A.tiredB.asleepC.consciousD.busy【答案】D上句说一个人在太空中是可怕的,因此为了不让他们感到孤独就得让他们始终忙着做事。
如:if, because, though, as, which, it, and, but, however, therefore, so, for, example, I'm afraid, so that, so...that等词语。
