However, their structures are almost the same. They are mainly composed of shell, frame, deck, holds and tanks, and the superstructure.2. Ship TypesThere are many types of ships that transport cargoes at sea. According to their use, the cargo ships can be divided into dry cargo ships and tankers.Dry Cargo ShipAccording to the loaded cargo, structure and components, dry cargo ships can be divided into such as follows:①General cargo shipGeneral cargo ships refer to the ships that run termly in the busy cargo transporting shipping lines and mainly transport grocery. The speed of these ships is fast.②Bulk cargo shipBulk cargo ships refer to the ships that transport bulk cargoes without packaging. According to the types of transported cargoes, bulk cargo ships can be divided into grain ships, colliers and ore ships.③Refrigerated shipRefrigerated ships refer to the special ships for transporting refrigerant cargoes that are perishable. There are refrigeration systems in the ships, and the temperature in the ship can be set to meet the requirements of cargoes in each floor.④Container shipContainer ships can be divided into partial container ships, complete or full container ships and variable or convertible container ships.⑤Roll on/roll off shipRolling loading ships are mainly for transporting cars and containers. Loading devices are not necessary for these ships. Usually, uncorked slope is installed on the side or in either end of the ship to join the ship to the dock. While loading and unloading cargoes, cars or trail cars can directly drive into or out of the ship cabins.Tanker①Oil Tanker is a cargo ship designed to carry crude oil in bulk②Liquefied natural gas carrier is a cargo ship designed specially to carry liquefied natural gas.3. Ship TonnageShip tonnage is the unit for calculating ship size, which can be divided into two classes: weight tonnage and dimension tonnage.Weight TonnageShip weight tonnage is the unit for calculating ship weight. 1,000 kilograms is used as 1metric ton, 2,240 pounds as 1 long ton, or 2,000 pounds as 1 short ton. Presently, the metric system is usually applied as the calculating unit. Ship weight tonnage can also be divided into two classes: displacement tonnage and dead weight tonnage.①Displacement tonnageDisplacement tonnage is the number of tons of water weight that a ship in the water displaces, which are also the tons of the ship weight.②Dead weight tonnage-D.W.T.D.W.T. sometimes termed deadweight carrying capacity, refers to the carrying capacity of a ship in transportation. It comprises the cargo, stores, ballast, fresh water, fuel oil, passengers, crew and their effects. It can be divided into two classes: gross D.W.T. and net D.W.T.Gross Dead Weight Tonnage:It refers to the maximum loaded weight that is restricted with the loaded line. It is the total of the weight of loaded cargoes, necessary fuel, freshwater and other spare material.Net Dead Weight Tonnage or Dead Weight Cargo Tonnage—D.W.C.T.:It refers to the maximum weight of loaded cargoes that a ship is capable of transporting. It is also called loaded cargo tonnage. It is the margin of the amount of necessary storage of fuel, freshwater and other spare material subtracted from the total of shipload.Registered TonnageRegistered tonnage is the unit used in ship registration in marine countries, which takes ton as the computing unit. One registered ton is equal to 100 cubic feet or 2.83 cubic meters. Ships’ dimension tonnage can also be divided into gross and net registered tonnage.①Gross registered tonnage (GRT)Also called gross dimension tonnage, it refers to the total inner space or volume of all closed sites in the spaces on board.②Net registered tonnage (NRT)Also called net dimension tonnage, it refers to the difference between the gross tonnage minus the amount of space that is not used for shipping cargoes. It is the equivalent cargo tonnage that the ship can be loaded.Lead-in1. ListeningPassage 11.A2.C3.BTape Script:In shipping goods abroad, the exporter has various alternative methods. These include ship, truck, rail, air and parcel post. The choice will depend on the nature of the product (light or heavy, fragile or sturdy, perishable or durable, high or low in value per cubic meter, etc), the distance to be shipped, available means of transportation, and relative freight costs. For goods having high weight or cubic capacity or value ratio, the usual method of shipping overseas is by ocean cargo vessel. However, when speed is essential, air cargo may be preferred, although more expensive. For example, ski jackets are shipped from Germany to Japan by sea but towards the end of the ski season, air cargo is used.Passage 21. C2. ATape Script:There are many factors that buyers shall take into consideration, they are:Quick. Because foreign buyers, in making a decision to purchase, will be taking into account the exporter’s delivery time. Fast delivery is obviously an important “competitive edge” for an exporter. Of course, the actual delivery date will depend on stock, production as well as shipping time.Carefully. Because the foreign buyer all wants to receive the goods intact. In this way, the exporter gains customer satisfaction and avoids trouble and expenses of filling insurance claims and reshapping all or part of the order.Economically. Because the freight cost can be a substantial part of the final export price. The lower the freight cost, the more competitive the export price quotation.2. Spot DictationPart 11. F2. T3. I took many adventurous expeditions to some of the most amazing destinations in the world. Four years ago I boarded a train and made a trip to Canada. When we arrived there, the best snow for skiing fell but unfortunately I caught a cold. I soon developed a cough, a sore throat and a runny nose. There were frightening moments in my travel. Once a friend disappeared over the cliff and everyone let out an ear-splitting scream. Another time after a twelve-hour car ride to the capital I was so exhausted. I checked in to the hotel and relaxed for about an hour before I set out to explore the place, I'm determined to go and see the world until my health begins to be failing. Here is some advice for anyone going on a trip. Make sure to bring your AC power supply! I forgot to bring mine on a trip to Hong Kong this year. So I had to hunt around for a compatible power supply. And don't be embarrassed by your tight budget. Chances are that there is always someone trying to do it for less. Don’t allow yourself to be talked into “extras “ that you don’t need.Listening Task IFirst Listening /Answers1. Diarrhea.2. Kids took delight in his stomach condition.5. His stomach condition became a topic at a wedding.6. The diagnosis turned to be not as serious as he had expected.Third ListeningScriptI was spending my summer in a remote village in Ghana. I got afflicted with "the runny stomach", as the family I lived with called it. After 5 days of the runny stomach, we left the village and took a 12-hour car ride to the capital city. Needless to say, 12-hour car rides and runny stomachs aren't compatible. Once we had to stop in a village, greet the 20 or so people that were there, give a detailed explanation of my condition, and then I was allowed to use a brand-new porcelain toilet. I was very embarrassed because they had someone clean the toilet and stand outside while I did my noisy business. Through a crack in the bathroom wall I could hear some kids washing the dishes. I was splendid entertainment for the kids. Each time I let out some gas, I heard squeals of delight and hysterical laughter. They also muttered about "runny stomach". But the highlight of my sickness had to be the wedding we attended in the capital. There I was greeted by countless guests. They asked about the details of my stomach condition. On my 8th day of sickness, we went to a private hospital and for the next two weeks I took lots of prescribed antibiotics and drank bottles of oral rehydration salts. My condition began improving in about two days. Much to my disappointment, the stool and blood samples came back negative, so my condition was a result of a change of diet. Needless to say, I learned not to be shy about stomach conditions.Listening Task 2First Listening/Answers1. wear a vest with many pockets2. His money was nearly stolen.3. Another time he carried everything he needed with the vest but neglected that a knife couldn't be taken on board a plane. Again he fell into trouble.ScriptWhen he realized that his short-term memory was failing, my husband decided to wear a multi-pocketed vest. The vest, with its 17 pockets each serving a purpose, did work for a while. Things were going so well that he started to relax a little and one day he turned back to his traditional pants-pocket wallet.Just seconds after boarding the crowded Rome subway4 a pickpocket was attracted by the familiar bulge. My husband stared at him for a moment. Finally the would-be thief withdrew and joined the crowd. My partner became more careful, and the next time he was better organized, all the essentials in their assigned pockets. We had checked in for our flight to Athens. Before boarding I casually asked where his Swiss army knife was. His hand immediately went to the pocket designated forthe knife, and found it safe there. Then his face fell: safe, that is, for anything but air travel.Realizing that his precious knife would be taken away at security, he returned to the check-in counter. Fortunately, the frowning attendant agreed to pack his knife in a little box and check it separately.By the time we got to Athens at midnight we were both exhausted. Our luggage emerged and all the other passengers were gone. My husband was still watching the carousel going round and round and round. Finally, he went to find a baggage handler and a half hour later reappeared triumphantly with his knife.Real W orld ListeningGet the Main IdeasAnswersF T F F T F ? ?ScriptKim: Hey travelers! What is a good time to visit Costa Rica? Would June be a bad month? First, Costa Rica has microclimates, and it canbe raining in the mountains but not on the coast, along the Caribbean but not the Pacific.Second, even on a rainy day it tends to rain late in the day or the evening and you're stilllikely to get 5 or more hours of sunshine.Anne: I'm in the process of planning our delayed honeymoon this summer, most likely to Europe. For many people, stress is so commonplace that it has become a way of life. Stress isn’t always bad. In small doses, it can help you perform under pressure and motivate you to do your best. But when you’re constantly running in emergency mode, your mind and body pay the price.Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. When you sense danger--- whether i t’s real or ima gined--- the body’s defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process knownas the “fight-or-flight” reaction, or the stress response. The stress response is the body’s way of protecting you. When working properly, it helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert. In emergency situations, stress can save your life – giving you extra strength to defend yourself, for example, or spurring you to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident. The stress response also helps you rise to meet challenges. Stress is what keeps you on your toes during a presentation at work, sharpens your concentration when you’re attempting the game-winning free throw, or drives you to study for an exam when you’d rather be watching TV.But beyond a certain point, stress stops being helpful and starts causing major damage to your health, your mood, your productivity, your relationships, and your quality of life.Effects of chronic stressThe body doesn’t distinguish between physical and psychological threats. When you’re stressed over a busy schedule, an argument with a friend, a traffic jam, or a mountain of bills, your body reacts just as strongly as if you were facing a life-or-death situation. If you have a lot of responsibilities and worries, your emergency stress response ma y be “on” most of the time. The more your body’s stresssystem is activated, the easier it is to trip and the harder it is to shut off.Long-term exposure to stress can lead to serious health problems. Chronic stress disrupts nearly every system in your body. It can raise blood pressure, suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, contribute to infertility, and speed up the aging process. Long-term stress can even rewire the brain, leaving you more vulnerable to anxiety and depression. Many health problems are caused or exacerbated by stress, including:●Pain of any kind●Heart disease●Digestive problems●Sleep problems●Depression●Obesity●Autoimmune diseases●Skin conditions, such as eczemaTopic Preview1. You are expected to do it after class and check the answers on your own. It’s common sense that if you are extremely unhappy in your job, and you come home and dump on your spouse about it every day, it could start to wear on the relationship. So is the opposite true, then? 1) If you’re happy in your job,can your marriage actually improve? According to long-term research conducted by The Love Doctor Terri Orbuch, the answer is “yes”.Orbuch, who is author of “5 Simple Steps to Take Your Marriage from Good to Great,” has been following and observing hundreds of married couples for nearly a quarter century inorder to find out what makes marriages happy, strong and long lasting. She has found that there is a definite positive spillover 2) from work to marriage. Here are her four suggestions on putting this into practice: Suggestion 1: 3) Seek support and help from your spouse. If you’re having a problem at work, solicit advice from your spouse. Research shows that the need for assistance is one of the three basic needs of all people in relationships (intimacy and reassurance of one’s value are the other two). Seeking solutions to work-related problems together strengthens the ma rital bond and feeling that “we’re in this together.” Moreover, because your spouse knows you so well, he or she is likely to come up with valuable insights and feedback.Suggestion 2: 4) “Grow” in your job. A recent large-scale study in Harvard Business Review found that the No. 1 factor 5)that keeps employees happy and motivated in their jobs is “making progress.” Workers who are fulfilled and stimulated during the workday tend to be happier individuals, and much of that happiness gets transferred to their spouse at the end of the day.Suggestion 3: 6) Practice behaviors that relieve stress. Numerous studies have documented a link between workplacestress and poor health. The two most common workplace stressors are 7) feeling as if you haven’t been heard or supported, and 8) negative interpersonal work relationships. Find ways to express your needs, ask for assistance and manage conflicts at your job. Good health is sexy and attractive to a spouse, and so is an upbeat attitude.Suggestion 4: 9) Share your work life. Orbuch’s study found that the happiest marriages are ones in which partners feel their spouse regularly discloses information about his or her life, even details from work that might be deemed “boring.” The bonus: 10) Work life becomes interwoven with home life, promoting a satisfying feeling of work-life balance, which makes you happier overall.SourceAppendix A Supplementary Reading Unit 6 Psychological Health Useful Expressions。

Unit 6 risks Part 2A (新编大学英语综合教程4)

Part Two: In-Class Reading >> Detailed Reading
For example, larger cars are generally safer than small ones in collisions. But how much safer? 7 The answer is that you are roughly twice as likely to die in a serious crash in a small car than in a large one. Yet larger cars generally cost more than small ones (and also use more gas, thus increasing the environmental risks!), so how do we decide when the reduced risks are worth the added costs? The ultimate risk avoider might, for instance, buy a tank or an armored car, thus minimizing the risk of death or injury in a collision. But is the added cost and inconvenience worth the difference in price, even supposing you could afford it? We cannot begin to answer such questions until we have a feel for the level of risks in question. So how do we measure the level of a risk? Some people seem to think that the answer is a simple number. We know, for instance, that about 25,000 people per year die in automobile accidents.
