Welcome to Toronto
The world in one city.
Ask anyone who’s spent any significant amount of time in Toronto to describe their city and they will likely conjure up images of many disparate entities, linked as a whole. Indeed, Toronto’s status as a world-class city derives in part from its great diversity, and nowhere is this more evident than in its extraordinary variation in neighborhoods. From the sparkling glass of the downtown financial core to the time-weathered brick of the Distillery district; from Parkdale’s transformative urban spaces, Toronto is brimming with potential to Annex
The Annex is one of Toronto's oldest neighbourhoods, characterized by its distinctive tall narrow houses, and lively community along Bloor Street. Because the Annex is so close to the University of Toronto, it is lively with students, libraries restaurants, pubs, and clubs.
Chinatown
Chinatown is an ethnic enclave in Downtown Toronto, with a high concentration of ethnic Chinese residents and businesses extending along Dundas Street West and Spadina Avenue west of the centre of the city. A second area known as East Chinatown, extends along both streets from the intersection of Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street. First developed in the late 19th century, the main Chinatown is now one of the largest Chinatowns in North America and one of several major Chinese-Canadian communities in the Greater Toronto Area.
The Distillery District
A neighborhood as old as Toronto itself, the Distillery district is home to some of the bestpreserved Victorian architecture in North America and boasts a recent revitalization into the present. Pedestrian friendly, and poised on the outer edge of the downtown core, the Distillery is home to artisans, theatres, restaurants, cafes and boutique retailers.
Church & Wellesley Village
Church Wellesley Village, home to Toronto's original LGBToriented community. The stretch of Church from Carlton to Bloor also goes by more colloquial names like the Village, the Gay Village, the Gay Ghetto or Gaybourhood, but either way you slice it it's still home to a thriving mix of restaurants, cafes and clothing stores. It's also ground zero for the annual Pride Week, one of Toronto's biggest summer festivals and one of the largest Prides in the world.
Where to Go.
Bloordale Village The Annex Kensington Market Chinatown Bloor Street & Danforth Avenue Church & Wellesley Village Financial District Distillery District Queen Street Toronto Islands
Bloor Street & Danforth Avenue
Bloor street is a long street which runs through Toronto from the far west to east. When Bloor street hits the downtown center at Yonge street it turns into Danforth Avenue. Along Bloor in the downtown core you’ll see the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) which houses a variety of exhibitions including a massive dinosaure exhibit. You can also find all the designer shops such as LV, Prada, and Holt Renfew. When you go along the Danforth, you’ll find Greektown where every year a massive food festival happens called ‘Taste of Danforth’.
Bloordale Village
Once a dead-zone between Ossington and Bloor West Village (further west), Bloordale has recently undergone a major community rejuvenation project, making it one of Toronto’s up-and-coming neighborhoods for shopping, dining and living.
Financial District
The Financial District is a business district in Toronto, within the downtown core. It is the main financial district in Toronto, and is the financial heart of Canada. It is the most densely built-up area of Toronto, home to numerous banking companies, corporate headquarters, high-powered legal and accounting firms, insurance companies and stockbrokers. In turn, the presence of so many decision-makers has brought in advertising agencies and marketing companies. The banks have built large office towers, much of whose space is leased to these companies. The bank towers, and much else in Toronto's core, are connected by a system of underground walkways, known as PATH, which is lined with retail establishments making the area one of the most important shopping districts in Toronto. The vast majority of these stores are only open during weekdays during the business day when the financial district is populated. During the evenings and weekends, the walkways remain open but the area is almost deserted and most of the stores are closed.
