Because of British politeness rules, a ccording to which conflict should be avoided, people either jus t do not complain, or sometimes bottle it up and then outpour i t in another way in other umimportant situations. In fact, thereis a TV programme which show the British in typical situations where they would be perfectly reasonable in complaining, but they don’t. In one scene, a woman reads a newspaper over p eople’s shoulders and the people say nothing or look embarra ssed. The British are also well-known for putting up with bad service everywhere from restau rants to airports and railway stations because the standard rul es of behaviour say that it is bad to draw attention to yourself. This is why, when you travel on the tube in London and there i s yet another delay, the passengers will look at each other, si gh, smile wearily and raise their eyes to heaven. They might e ven say, “Huh!Typical!” in a resigned(顺从的)tone of voice that says that there’s nothing that can be don e about it. When complaints are made, they are made in an a pologetic or a humorous tone of voice. In France ,on the other hand, angry passengers might riot(闹事)and burn down the subway station if they had to put up wit h the poor service that the London underground provides. Americans and other Europeans, who are much more direct a nd in-your-face than the British, often wonder why British people always say “sorry” or “excuse me” when they complain. “It’s like they’re apologizing for something that isn’t their fault, they say. The y are missing the point. British people are not really sorry ---it is because the word ‘sorry’ actually works as a distancing sk ill. This is important in terms of negative politeness and not dr awing attention to yourself. If you do not say ‘sorry’ or use oth er distancing words like ‘could’,‘would’,‘might’,‘possibly’ and so on, you will be seen as rude.”28. What does the underlined part “bottle it up” in Paragraph 1 mean?A. Put something into bottlesB. Not do anything d angerousC. Cause problems by hesitatingD. Not allow emoti ons to be seen29. The French tend to _______.A. tolerate bad serviceB. enjoy taking the subw ayC. make a complaint humorouslyD. express their di ssatisfaction directly30. When the British say “sorry”, they actually want to _______ .A. try not to be rudeB. apologize sincerelyC. show their feelings directlyD. draw attention to themselves31. Which can be the best title for the text?A. How to complainB. Complaining politelyC. Poor service in BritainD. Politeness rules acr oss the worldDWhether in the home or the workplace, social robots are goi ng to become a lot more common in the next few years. Socia l robots are about to bring technology to the everyday world in a more humanized way, said Cynthia Breazeal, chief scientist at the robot company Jibo. While household robots today do the normal housework, soci al robots will be much more like companions than mere tools. For example, these robots will be able to distinguish when so meone is happy or sad. This allows them to respond more ap propriately to the user. The Jibo robot, arranged to ship later this year, is designed to be a personalized assistant. You can talk to the robot, ask it q uestions, and make requests for it to perform different tasks. The robot doesn’t just deliver general answers to questions; it responds based on what it learns about each individual in the household. It can do things such as reminding an elderly family member to take medicine or taking family photos.Social robots are not just finding their way into the home. The y have potential applications in everything from education to h ealth care and are already finding their way into some of thes e spaces.Fellow Robots is one company bringing social robots to the m arket. The company’s“Oshbot” robot is built to assist custome rs in a store, which can help the customers find items and hel p guide them to the product’s location in the store. It can also speak different languages and make recommendations for diff erent items based on what the customer is shopping for.The more interaction the robot has with humans, the more it l earns. But Oshbot, like other social robots, is not intended to r eplace workers, but to work alongside other employees.“We h ave technologies to train social robots to do things not for us, but with us,” said Breazeal.32. They learn languages, history, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything from school. A teacher,no matter how much he knows, cannot teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves. It is always more important to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula(公式). It is actually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in maths. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a maths problem. Great scientists, such as Einstein, Newton and Galileo didn’t get everything from school. But they were allso successful. They invented so many things for mankind. The reason for their success isthat they worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. AIn 1854, Louis Pasteur assumed the duties of a professor at a university in France. Meanwhile, he conducted studies to find out what caused milk and other drinks containing alcohol to become sour. His breakthrough came when he discovered that the souring was caused by bacteria in the liquid. He then developed a process through which the bacteria could be removed by boiling the liquid and then cooling it. This method, called pasteurization in his honor, became widespread. At that time, silk producers were suffering because the eggs of the worms that made the silk were dying from an unknown disease. Pasteur discovered the bacteria that were killing the eggs and developed a method to kill the germs.Pasteur next turned his attention to rabies, a deadly disease that animals transferred to humans. Many people thought Pasteur was wasting his time, but Pasteur ignored their doubts and continued his efforts to find a cure for rabies. One of his patients was a sick boy, whose mother had turned to Pasteur for help. Pasteur told the mother that he had invented a vaccine that was strong enough to kill the invisible enemy. He said that he would use a needle to inject the vaccine into the boy. The vaccine would then fight the germs, just like a soldier fights in a war. That boy was the first person to receive the vaccine, and the treatment was a success. After that, no one had to be afraid of rabies anymore. People who had laughed at him before, now respected him. Pasteur had believed in himself and had not given up. He had won the battle with the enemy.21. Pasteur helped the ________ industry with the method named after him.A. constructionB. energyC. beerD. service22. Why does Pasteur compare his rabies treatment with soldiers?A. To encourage people to pity the man.B. To imply that the vaccine was strong.C. To express his feelings about wars.D. To show that the germs could be useful.23. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. The teaching techniques that Pasteur employed.B. Pasteur’s interest in a key manufacturing process.C. Pasteur’s psychological issues and their treatment.D. The advances that Pasteur achieved in his field.BIf you ever imagined walking on a footbridge which is hanging high up in the sky and taking in the views of mountains and the sea below, you can actually realize that dream in Langkawi. The bridge, part of the master plan of Mount Mat Cincang Geo Park, has been designed and constructed to give you an experience which would otherwise be impossible to attain. It is a suspended (悬挂的) bridge made of steel and supported by a single pylon (桥塔) in the middle, which is a tall tower and keeps the bridge suspended in an open space.。
