Descriptions of unicorns have been found dating from ancient times. The great philosopher Aristotle theorized(推理) that there were two types of unicorns—the socalled Indian Ass and the Oryx, a kind of antelope. Unicorns are often used in the logo of a noble family, town council or university as their special sign. Even Scotland is represented by a unicorn.According to the legend, anyone attempting to catch a unicorn had to be extremely cautious as it has a reputation for being very fierce. A clever trick suggested by unicorntrappers, in order to catch this magnificent beast without being hurt by its horn, was for the hunter tostand in front of a tree and then to move quickly behind it as the unicorn charged. Hopefully, the creature could then be captured when its horn was stuck in the tree. When hollowed out and used as a drinkingcup, the unicorn’s horn was said to have the power to offer protection against person. It was believed that nobody could be harmed by drinking the contents of a unicorn’s horn. Right up until the French Revolution in 1789, the French court was said to have used cups made of “unicorn” hor n in order to protect the king. In addition, the horn was said to have medicinal value, so much so that it could be sold for more than ten times the price of the same weight of gold. What, then, was “unicorn” horn? We know at times the rhino(犀牛) was co nfused with this legendary creature. A drinkingcup supposedly made of “unicorn” horn was discovered to be made of the horn of a rhino.31.Which of the following is TRUE of the unicorn?A.It was not historically recorded.B.Its horn was first used in France.C.It was similar to the Indian Ass and the Oryx.D.It could be the symbol of a university.32.To catch a unicorn, the unicorntrappers had to try all of the following EXCEPT________.A.tempting the unicorn to attackB.making use of the tree as a protectionC.hiding quickly behind the unicornD.having the unicorn horn stuck in the tree33.The last paragraph is mainly about________.A.the value of the unicorn hornB.the users of the unicorn hornC.the price of the unicorn hornD.the comparison between the unicorn horn and the rhino horn34.In the last paragraph, the word “unicorn” is in quotation marks(引号) because________.A.the cup is designed only for a royal familyB.the unicorn does not exist in realityC.the unicorn is the rarest animal in the worldD.the medicinal value of the horn is appreciatedBAlthough there are many ways in which people communicate through speech, public speaking has probably received more study and attracted more attention than any other. Politicians winning an election, salespeople presenting products and etc.—all depend upon this form of public communication. Even people who do not make speaking a part of their daily work are often asked to make public speeches: students at graduation, for instance, or members of churches, clubs or other organizations. Nearly everyone speaks in public at some time or other, and those who perform the task well often become leaders. There are many reasons for speaking in public. A public speaker may hope to teach an audience about new ideas, or provide information about some topic. Creating a good feeling or entertaining an audience may be another purpose. Public speakers, however, most often seek to persuade an audience to accept new opinions, to take certain actions, or to see the world in a new way.Public speakers usually know well in advance when they are scheduled to make a speech. Consequently, they are able to prepare their message before they deliver it. Sometimes, though, speakers must deliver the message unprepared, or off the cuff, such as when they are asked to speak at a wedding reception or to participate in an interview. When they do not have to speak unprepared, most speakers write their own speeches. Politicians and business managers sometimes employ professional writers who prepare their speeches for them. These professional writers may work alone or in small teams. Although the speaker may have some ideas into the contents of the speech, the writers sometimes have a great influence over the opinions expressed by their employers. Regardless of how a speech is prepared, the person who delivers it is given credit for its effect upon its hearers.35.Public speaking is well known to average people because________.A.most of them have been trained as public speakersB.most of them have been audience of such activitiesC.most of them have to do it when they study at collegeD.the passage does not mention the reason36.Which of the following is rarely the purpose of public speaking? A.To influence people’s ideas and behaviours.B.To persuade the audience to accept an idea.C.To enjoy the satisfaction from one’s own speech.D.To develop public interest.37.No matter who writes a speech, the audience________.A.do not believe what the speaker saysB.know very well whom the speaker isC.know whose idea the speech really expressesD.believe it expresses the speaker’s idea。

考点规范练17(Module 5)Ⅰ.阅读理解(2015兰州实战考试)Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind ashopping cart. They will in a lifetime, push the chrome-plated contraptions manymiles. But few will know—or even think to ask—who it was that invented them.Sylvan N.Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937.At that time he was in the supermarket business.Every day he would see shoppers lugging groceries around in baskets they had to carry. One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business. On June 4,1937,Goldman’s first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers b egan arriving. He couldn’t wait to see them using his invention. But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try. After a while,Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren’t using hiscarts.“Don’t you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?” one shopper replied. But Goldman wasn’t beaten yet.He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try.To this end,Goldman hired a group ofpeople to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping!Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony (假的) customers. As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come—those who came bought more. With larger,easier-to-handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.Today’s shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman’s originalmodel.Perhaps that’s one reason why Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937—the coming of the shopping cart. 【语篇导读】本文主要介绍了Goldman发明购物车的原因、经过和结果。

Module 5Ⅰ.阅读理解A导学号 02280410 Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.Born in September, 1897, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sévigné in Paris.Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using Xray facilities (设备) to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developing Xray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognised in the form of a Military Medal by the French government. In 1918 ,Irene became her mother's assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926.Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, also like her mother, she developed leukemia because of her work with radioactivity(辐射能) .Irene JoliotCurie died from leukemia on March 17,1956.语篇解读:本文为记叙文。

B导学号 02280411A sunflower is a sunflower. A mobile phone is a mobile phone. But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment? As early as next year it may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to bury it in the garden or a plant pot and wait for it to flower. A biodegradable (生物可降解的) mobile phone was, this month, introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will encourage consumers to recycle.Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and able to change shape. Overtimeit can also break down into the soil without giving out any toxic (有毒的) chemicals. British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed. When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms nitrates (硝酸盐). These feed the seed and help the flower grow.Engineers have designed a small transparent (透明的)window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is thrown away.“We've only put sunflower seeds into the covers so far. But we are working with plant experts to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time,” said one scientist. As phone technology is developing so quickly people are constantly (经常地) throwing their mobiles away. This means manufacturers are under pressure to find ways of recycling them. Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be thrown away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can offer some relief for nature, according to the scientists.“The seed is released and the flower grows in t he pot so you don't have to concern yourself with the phone when you have finished using it,” said Kerry Kirwan. She leads the research team, which is based at the University of Warwick in Britain.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。
