► anniversary [ˌænɪˈvɜːsəri] n 周年纪念日 ► pioneer [ˌpaɪəˈnɪə(r)] n 先驱 ► shine a lamp of hope [输出表达] 点亮希望之灯
In the United Kingdom and around the world, people have risen magnificently to the challenges of the year, and I am so proud and moved by this quiet, indomi-table spirit. To our young people in particular I say thank you for the part you have played.
This year, we celebrated International Nurses’ Day, on the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale. As with other nursing pioneers like Mary Seacole, Florence Nightingale shone a lamp of hope across the world.
Every year we herald the coming of Christmas by turning on the lights. And light does more than create a festive mood — light brings hope. For Christians, Jesus is “the light of the world”, but we can’t celebrate his birth today in quite the usual way. People of all faiths have been unable to gather as they would wish for their festivals, such as Passover, Easter, Eid, and Vaisakhi.

英国女王2017圣诞致辞全文the queen’s christmas speech XXin this past year my family and i have been inspired by the courage and hope we have seen in so many ways in britain, in the commonwealth and around the world. we‟ve seen that it‟s in hardship that we often find strength from our families; it‟s in adversity that new friendships are sometimes formed; and it‟s in a crisis that communities break down barriers and bind together to help one another.families, friends and communities often find a source of courage rising up from within. indeed, sadly, it seems that it is tragedy that often draws out the most and the best from the human spirit.when prince philip and i visited australia this year we saw for ourselves the effects of natural disaster in some of the areas devastated by floods, where in january so many people lost their lives and their livelihoods. we were moved by the way families and local communities held together to support each other.prince william travelled to new zealand and australia in the aftermath of earthquakes, cyclones and floods and saw how communities rose up to rescue the injured, comfort the bereaved and rebuild the cities and towns devastated by nature.the prince of wales also saw first hand the remarkable resilience of the human spirit after tragedy struck in a welsh mining community, and how communities can work together to support their neighbors.this past year has also seen some memorable and historic visits – to ireland and from america.the spirit of friendship so evident in both these nations canfill us all with hope. relationships that years ago were once so strained have through sorrow and forgiveness blossomed into long term friendship. it is through this lens of history that we should view the conflicts of today, and so give us hope for tomorrow.of course, family does not necessarily mean blood relatives but often a description of a community, organization or nation. the commonwealth is a family of 53 nations, all with a common bond, shared beliefs, mutual values and goals.it is this which makes the commonwealth a family of people in the truest sense, at ease with each other, enjoying its shared history and ready and willing to support its members in the direst of circumstances. they have always looked to the future, with a sense of camaraderie, warmth and mutual respect while still maintaining their individualism.the importance of family has, of course, come home to prince philip and me personally this year with the marriages of two of our grandchildren, each in their own way a celebration of the god-given love that binds a family together.for many this christmas will not be easy. with our armed forces deployed around the world, thousands of service families face christmas without their loved ones at home. the bereaved and the lonely will find it especially hard. and, as we all know, the world is going through difficult times. all this will affect our celebration of this great christian festival.finding hope in adversity is one of the themes of christmas. jesus was born into a world full of fear. the angels came to frightened shepherds with hope in their voices: …fear not‟, they urged, …we bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. for unto you is born this day in the city of david a saviourwho is christ the lord.‟although we are capable of great acts of kindness, history teaches us that we sometimes need saving from ourselves – from our recklessness or our greed. god sent into the world a unique person – neither a philosopher nor a general (important though they are) – but a saviour, with the power to forgive.forgiveness lies at the heart of the christian faith. it can heal broken families, it can restore friendships and it can reconcile divided communities. it is in forgiveness that we feel the power of god‟s love.in the last verse of this beautiful carol, o little town of bethlehem, there‟s a prayer:o holy child of bethlehemdescend to us we praycast out our sinand enter inbe born in us todayit is my prayer that on this christmas day we might all find room in our lives for the message of the angels and for the love of god through christ our lord.i wish you all a very happy christmas.

As a child, I never imagined that one day a man would walk on the moon. Yet this year we marked the fiftieth anniversary of the famous Apollo 11 mission.

As those historic pictures were beamed backed to earth, millions of us sat transfixed to our television screens, as we watched Neil Armstrong taking a small step for man and a giant leap for mankind and, indeed, for womankind. It's a reminder for us all that giant leaps often start with small steps.

Sixty years ago today, a young woman spoke about the speed of technological change as she presented the first television broadcast of its kind. She described the moment as a landmark:"Television has made it possible for many of you to see me in your homes on Christmas Day. My own family often gather round to watch television as they are at this moment, and that is how I imagine you now."Six decades on,the presenter has ‘evolved’ somewhat, as has the technology she described. Back then, who could have imagined that people would one day be watching this on laptops and mobile phones –as some of you are today. But I’m also struck by something that hasn’t changed. That, whatever the technology, many of you will be watching this at home.We think of our homes as places of warmth, familiarity and love; of shared stories and memories, which is perhaps why at this time of year so many return to where they grew up. There is a timeless simplicity to the pull of home. For many, the idea o f “home” reaches beyond a physical building – to a home town or city. This Christmas, I think of London and Manchester, whose powerful identities shone through over the past twelve months in the face of appalling attacks. In Manchester, those targeted included children who had gone to see their favourite singer. A few days after the bombing, I had the privilege of meeting some of the young survivors and their parents.I describe that hospital visit as a “privilege” because the patients I met were an example to us all, showing extraordinary bravery and resilience. Indeed, many of those who survived the attack came together just days later for a benefit concert. It was a powerful reclaiming of the ground, and of the city those young people call home.We expect our homes to be a place of safety –“sanctuary” even – which makes it all the more shocking when the comfort they provide is shattered. A few weeks ago, The Prince of Wales visited the Caribbean in the aftermath of hurricanes that destroyed entire communities. And here in London, who can forget the sheer awfulness of the Grenfell Tower fire?I describe that hospital visit as a “privilege” because the patients I met were an example to us all, showing extraordinary bravery and resilience. And here in London, who can forget the sheer awfulness of the Grenfell Tower fire? Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who died and those who lost so much; and we are indebted to members of the emergency services who risked their own lives, this past year, saving others. Many of them, of course, will not be at home today because they are working, to protect us.Reflecting on these events makes me grateful for the blessings of home and family, and in particular for 70 years of marriage. I don’t know that anyone had invented the term “platinum” for a 70 wedding anniversary when I was born. You weren’t expected to be around that long. Even Prince Philip has decided it’s time to slow down a little – having, as he economically put it,“done his bit”. But I know his supp ort and unique sense of humour will remain as strong as ever, as we enjoy spending time this Christmas with our family and look forward to welcoming new members into it next year.In 2018 I will open my home to a different type of family: the leaders of the fifty-two nations of the Commonwealth, as they gather in the UK for a summit. The Commonwealth has an inspiring way of bringing people together, be it through the Commonwealth Games – which begin in a few months’ time on Australia’s Gold Coast – or through bodies like the Commonwealth Youth Orchestra & Choir: a reminder of how truly vibrant this international family is.Today we celebrate Christmas, which itself is sometimes described as a festival of the home. Families travel long distances to be together. Volunteers and charities, as well as many churches, arrange meals for the homeless and those who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day. We remember the birth of Jesus Christ whose only sanctuary was a stable in Bethlehem. He knew rejection, hardship and persecution;and yet it is Jesus Christ’s generous love and example which has inspired me through good times and bad.Whatever your own experiences this year; wherever and however you are watching, I wish you a peaceful and very happy Christmas.(英文来源:每日镜报)。
