笔者十来岁的时候,每到夏季,常常拉一条破苇席,抱一条补丁摞补丁的烂床单,与村里的小伙伴一起,睡到打麦场上听老三爷拍瞎话(讲故事)。老三爷是我的本族老爷,排行老三,村里人都叫 他“三爷”。我在村里辈分最晚,得叫他“老三爷”。老三爷官号郑有,当时已经七十五六岁。他比本篇的主人公柴云升仅小不到二十岁。老三爷一辈子走南闯北,去过“西傍”(旧社会栾川人对陕西 的别称),干过队伍(过去对当兵的称呼),到范里担过棉花,去武汉看过当兵的儿子……他的故事最多。而且,老三爷很有讲故事的天才,我敢说,如果有文化,他比单田芳不会差多少!他讲的故事 绘声绘色,学人物说话也是惟妙惟肖,像说评书似的。所以在那没有电视,连收音机也被视为奢饰品的年代,老三爷的故事最能吸引我们这些心田干涸的年轻人。我脑海中的柴老八,就是老三爷在那时 候给我印上去的。
当时,虽然老三爷讲得眉色飞舞,我们听得津津有味,但大多是在听热闹。故事中的人物除了“柴老八”这个名提到的最多,因而我们记得比较牢之外,对于其他的人物我们也实在记不住几个。 还是后来读了几本书后,才知道老三爷口里的柴老八原来就是威震豫西的柴云升!与史书、志书上记述的人物一联系,才又回忆起来老三爷讲的人物和故事来。于是,我把老三爷讲的故事与书上记的柴 云升的事情串联在一起,就成了下面的几段故事:
