We may speak contemptuously of the poor old Romans because they relished the orgies of slaughter that went on in their arenas. We may despise them because they mistook these goings on for entertainment. We may forgive them condescendingly because they lived 2000 years ago and obviously knew no better. But are our feelings of superiority really justified? Are we any less blood-thirsty? Why do boxing matches, for instance, attract such universal interest? Don’t the spectators who attend them hope they will see some violence? Human beings remains as bloodthirsty as ever they were. The only difference between ourselves and the Romans is that while they were honestenough to admit that they enjoyed watching hungey lions tearing people apart and eating them alive, we find all sorts of sophisticated arguments to defend sports which should have been banned long age; sports which are quite as barbarous as, say, public hangings or bearbaiting. It really is incredible that in this day and age we should still allow hunting or bull-fighting, that we should be prepared to sit back and watch two men batter each other to pulp in a boxing ring, that we should be relatively unmoved by the sight of one or a number of racing cars crashing and bursting into flames. Let us not deceive ourselves. Any talk of ‘the sporting spirit’ is sheer hypocrisy. People take part in violent sports because of the high rewards they bring. Spectators are willing to pay vast sums of money to see violence. A world heavyweight championship match, for instance, is front page news. Millions of people are disappointed if a big fight is over in two rounds instead of fifteen. They feel disappointment because they have been deprived of the exquisite pleasure of witnessing prolonged torture and violence. Why should we ban violent sports if people enjoy them so much? You may well ask. The answer is simple: they are uncivilized. For centuries man has been trying to improve himself spiritually and emotionally –admittedly with little success. But at least we no longer tolerate the sight madmen cooped up in cages, or public floggings of any of the countless other barbaric practices which were common in the past. Prisons are no longer the grim forbidding places they used to be. Social welfare systems are in operation in many parts of the world. Big efforts are being made to distribute wealth fairly. These changes have come about not because human beings have suddenly and unaccountably improved, but because positive steps were taken to change the law. The law is the biggest instrument of social change that we have and it may exert great civilizing influence. If we banned dangerous and violent sports, we would be moving one step further to improving mankind. We would recognize that violence is degrading and unworthy of human beings.46. It can be in ferred from the passage that the author’s opinion of nowadays’ human beings isA.not very high.B. high.C. contemptuous.D. critical.47.The main idea of this passage isA.vicious and dangerous sports should be banned by law.B. people are willing to pay vast sums money to see violence.C. to compare two different attitudes towards dangerous sports.D. people are bloodthirsty in sports.48.That the author mentions the old Romans isA. To compare the old Romans with today’s people.B. to give an example.C. to show human beings in the past know nothing better.D. to indicate human beings are used to bloodthirsty.49.How many dangerous sports does the author mention in this passage?A. Three.B. Five.C. Six.D. Seven.50.The purpose of the author in writing this passage isA. that, by banning the violent sports, we human beings can improve our selves.B. that, by banning the dangerous sports, we can improve the law.C. that we must take positive steps to improve social welfare system.D. to show law is the main instrument of social change.BAdvertisers Perform a Useful Service to the CommunityAdvertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they’re always coming in for criticism. Their critics seem to resent them because they have a flair for self-promotion and because they have so much money to throw around. ‘It’s iniquitous,’ they say, ‘that this entirely unproductive industry (if we can call it that) should absorb millions of pounds each year. It only goes to show how much profit the big companies are making. Why don’t they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods? After all, it’s the consumer who pays…’w*w*w*k*s*5*u*c*o*mThe poor old consumer! He’d have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn’tcreate mass markets for products. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important function is to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods derives largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washing machine, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc., from an advertisement.Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws while waiting for a train? Would you like to read only closely printed columns of news in your daily paper? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a drab wall or a newspaper full of the daily ration of calamities. We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies could not subsist without this source of revenue. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programmes is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price!Another thing we mustn’t forget is the ‘small ads.’ which are in virtually every newspaper and magazine. What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns. For instance, you can find a job, buy or sell a house, announce a birth, marriage or death in what used to be called the ‘hatch, match and dispatch’ column but by far the most fascinating section is the personal or ‘agony’ column. No other item in a newspaper provides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep insight into human nature. It’s the best advertisement for advertising there is!51.What is main idea of this passage?A. Advertisement.B. The benefits of advertisement.C. Advertisers perform a useful service to communities.D. The costs of advertisement.52.The attitude of the author toward advertisers isA. appreciative.B. trustworthy.C. critical.D. dissatisfactory.53.Why do the critics criticize advertisers?A. Because advertisers often brag.B. Because critics think advertisement is a “waste of money〞.C. Because customers are encouraged to buy more than necessary.D. Because customers pay more.54.Which of the following is Not True?A. Advertisement makes contribution to our pockets and we may know everything.B. We can buy what we want.C. Good quality products don’t need to be advertised.D. Advertisement makes our life colorful.55.The passage isA. Narration.B. Description.C. Criticism.D. Today, most large public schools and community colleges have ESL〔English as a Second Language〕 programs:American English teachers feel that English students should learn the language the way they will use it.Therefore,ESL programs offer different English lessons to different students. Some programs teach students to communicate in English in public.Other programs teach the kind of English people will need for their jobs.American ESL instructional methods do not lay emphasis on grammar or translation, but on the importance of communication. The goal is to get the English learners to learn by using the language.1.People in the United States .A.are all native speakers of EnglishB.speak English in various waysC.all speak American EnglishD.are immigrants from English-speaking countries2.In the past the non-English immigrants .A.didn’t know how to learn EnglishB.found that English was not importantC.learned English through booksD.paid special attention to teaching English3. is the most widely used language except English in the U.S.A.ESLB.FrenchC.SpanishD.Chinese4.The phrase “pick up〞 in the second paragraph means “〞.A.try to masterB.repeat again and againC.go to school sometimesD.learn without studying or taking lessons5.ESL programs teach the students .A.only grammatical rules and idiomsB.to use English through practiceC.different languagesD.to learn English by translating their own native languages into English【语篇解读】本文是说明文。

He wrote plays and poems during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, which remain very popular today.During earlier times, people would probably have learned several ancient Roman and Greek plays. It was not unusual for writers to produce more current versions of these works. For example, in Shakespeare's play The Comedy of Errors Shakespeare borrowed certain details from the ancient Roman writer Plautus. For his play Macbeth, Shakespeare most likely used a work on Scottish history by Raphael Holinshed for information. Shakespeare might have borrowed from other writers, but the intensity(强度)of his imagination and language made the plays his own. While many plays by other writers of his time have been forgotten, Shakespeare and his art live on.Shakespeare was also influenced by the world around him. He described the sights and sounds of London in his plays. His works include observations about political struggles, the fear of diseases, and the popular language of the city's tradesmen. Shakespeare's knowledge of the English countryside is also clear. His works include descriptions of deep forests, local flowers, and the ancient popular traditions of rural people. It would be impossible to list all of the ways in which Shakespeare's works have influenced the world culture. But the first and greatest example would be his great influence on the English language. During his time, the English language waschanging. Many new words from other languages were being added. Shakespeare used his sharp mind and poetic inventiveness to create hundreds of new words and rework old ones. For example, he created the noun forms of“critic”,“mountaineer”and“eyeball”. Many common expressions in English come from his plays, including“pomp and circumstance(装腔作势)”from Othello,“full circle(绕圈子地)”from King Lear, etc. The list of cultural creations influenced by Shakespeare is almost endless. From paintings to television to music and dance, Shakespeare was well represented. Shakespeare's plays have been translated into every major language in the world.Shakespeare became a wellknown writer during a golden age of theater. His years of hard work paid off.11. What can we infer from the passage?A.Many of Shakespeare's works were influenced by earlier writings.B.Shakespeare was hardworking when he was a student.C.The experience of living in London helped a lot with Shakespeare's works.D.Shakespeare became rich later because of the popularity of his works.12. Shakespeare might have learnt some information from ancient Roman worksin________.A.King LearB.The Comedy of ErrorsC.MacbethD.Othello13. Why could Shakespeare's works survive his time?A.Because there were so few people writing plays in his time.B.Because he produced too many works that nobody else could do.C.Because he was a rich and influential person of his time.D.Because his works were rich in imagination and language.14. Shakespeare's greatest influence should be on________.A.the English languageB.paintingsC.televisionD.music and dance15. The passage is mainly about ________.A.an introduction to Shakespeare's life and his worksB.the main features and styles of Shakespeare's playsC.how ancient culture influenced Shakespeare and he influenced cultureD.Shakespeare's greatest influence on the world cultureBThe number of speakers of English in Shakespeare's time is estimated to have been about five million. Today it is estimated that some 260 million people speak it as a native language, mainly in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the standard varieties of English found in these areas, there are a great many regional and social varieties of the language as well as various levels of usage that are employed both in its spoken and written forms. In fact, it is impossible to estimate the number of people in the world who have acquired an adequate working knowledge of English in addition to their ownlanguages. The purpose for which English is learned and the situations in which such learning takes place are so varied that it is difficult to explain and still more difficult to judge what forms an adequate working knowledge for each situation. The main reason for the widespread demand for English is its presentday importance as a world language. Besides serving the indefinite needs of its native speakers, English is a language in which some of important works in science, technology, and other fields are being produced, and not always by native speakers. It is widely used for such purposes as meteorological and airport communications, international conferences, and the spread of information over the radio and television networks of many nations. It is a language of wider communication for a number of developing countries, especially former British colonies. Many of these countries have multilingual populations and need a language for internal communication in such matters as government, commerce, industry, law and education as well as for international communication and for access to the scientific and technological developments in the West.16.What would be the best title for this passage?A.The difficulties of learning EnglishB.International communicationsC.The standard varieties of EnglishD.English as a world language17.Which of the following statements is NOT true?A.Some 260 million people in the world have an adequate working knowledge of English.B.There are some 260 million native speakers of English in the world.C.It is almost impossible to estimate the number of people with an adequate working knowledge of English.D.People learn English for a variety of reasons.18.According to the passage, what is the main reason for the widespread useof English?A.It was popular during Shakespeare's time.B.It is used in former British colonies.C.It serves the needs of its native speakers.D.It is a world language that is used for international communication.19.What forms an adequate working knowledge of English?A.The ability to read a newspaper.B.It is difficult to judge because it differs for each situation.C.Being multilingual.D.Being a native speaker.20.What type of developing countries would be most likely to use English?A.Those geographically close to the United States.B.Those interested in the culture of the United States.C.Former colonies of Great Britain.D.Countries where international conferences are held.Ⅲ.

此处实际上是对“so much a(n)+名词”的用法的考查。

6.A 下文是举例,故选For example(例如)。

thus因此;however然而;in short简言之。

in other words换句话说;in a similar way用相似的方法;by all means无论如何。

step forward 前进;go on 继续;come out出版;发芽。
