Unit 2 Poems
Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic reasons —why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed? In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(破坏) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative(保守的) and do not like change.Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.【解题导语】本文是一篇议论文,讨论了现代建筑是否应该和古老的历史建筑建在一起。

Some years ago, writing in my diary used to be a usual activity. I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day's events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary. I did not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on pape匚After all, isn't accumulating memories a way of preserving the past? When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, well equipped with pens, a diary, and a camera・ During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across. I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifiilly preserving for future generations a detailed description of my trave ls. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand• The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows・ I automatically took out my pen...At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had set down in my diary・Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling. I still love to record ideas and quotations that strike me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful. I take pictures, but not very often only of objects I find really beautiful. Fm no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old. I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future・I don't want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes・ Maybe I won't have as many exact representations of people and places; maybe Fll forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me. I don^ live to make memories-I just live, and the memories form themselves.1.____________________________________________________________ Before the age of thirteen, the author regarded keeping a diary as a way of ______________________________ ・A.observing her school routineB.expressing her satisfactionC.impressing her classmatesD.preserving her history2.What caused a change in the author's understanding of keeping a diary?A.A dull night on the journey.B.The beauty of the great valley・C.A striking quotation from a book.D.Her concerns for future generations・3.What does the author put in her diary now?A.Notes and beautiful pictures.B.Special thoughts and feelings.C.Detailed accounts of daily activities.D.Descriptions of unforgettable events.4.The author comes to realize that to live a meaningful life is _______ ・A.to experience itB.to live the present in the futureC.to make memoriesD.to give accurate representations of it【文章大意】作者曾经把写日记看作保留过去的一种方式,一次山谷旅行的经历让作者对日记的理解发生了变化,现在作者认识到过有意义的生活就是体验生活,而不是记录生活。

We talk about people being “colourblind” but very few of us are.Even those who describe themselves as colourblind are normally just colour deficient.A strongly colourblind person will still be able to tell 20 different colours, compared to the 100 or so that normalsighted people see.Pingelap,a tiny island in the Pacific,is a beautiful spot but one that has a genetic trouble. It is known as Colourblind Island because so many people who live on this remote island can only see in black and white. Not being able to see in colour is bad enough. But one islander,Herrol, who's a fisherman, also struggles in full sunlight because all he sees is a painful burntout image.“I find it difficult to go outside in the sun,” he says,“because when it's sunny I cannot see to do my work.”But if being truly colourblind is rare, why is it that around 10% of the population of Pingelap live in a totally black and white world?Well,we know that in 1780 the population of Pingelap was all but wiped out by a tsunami(海啸).As few as 20 people survived, one of whom was the king. It's believed he had a genetic fault that causes colourblindness and he passed this fault on to his many generations. There is one advantage.Herrol can see well, really well,in the dark.So when it gets dark,Herrol and his friends get in their boats and hunt flying fish. They hang up flaming torches and the flying fish are attracted to the flames.“This type of fishing is fun,” Herrol says,“especially if we catch plenty. So even though it's hard work we enjoy it.”1.What is Pingelap famous as?A.A tiny island.B.A beautiful island.C.A mentally troubled island.D.A colourblind island.2.What can we infer about Herrol?A.He may stay at home when it's sunny.B.He is intereste d in burntout images.C.He likes taking photos very much.D.He doesn't live in Pingelap any more.3.Why are about onetenth of people in Pingelap colourblind?A.Because Pingelap often suffers from tsunamis.B.Because the king had an unlucky marriage.C.Because the king's genetic fault played a role.D.Because the king made a serious mistake.4.What would be the best title for the text?A.The island of colourblindness.B.The disadvantage of Herrol.C.The history of Pingelap.D.The advantage of colourblin dness.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了色盲岛——Pingelap岛,以及该岛上居民色盲的原因、情况等。

What is happiness to you李仕才一、阅读理解。
According to a historian, uniforms were introduced into the United States around 1979 to deal with the problems of violence among students.Statistical reports state that only 15% of primary schools and around 10% of secondary schools in the United States have strictly carried out the uniform policy. In recent times it has become the most debated topic among parents and educators, with many critics stating the fact that wearing uniforms has no effect on the thought process of a student nor does it considerably reduce inequality among the masses.Students are instructed to follow certain rules:for boys, pants, shirts with turtlenecks, sweaters and jackets are acceptable, while in some schools, shorts are strictly forbidden;similarly, for girls, long skirts, blouses, pants andflat.heeled shoes are acceptable.School uniforms in other countries such as Thailand,Indonesia,India and Pakistan were introduced during the British colonial period. In these countries, girls in senior schools usually wear broad trousers and boys wear pants and shirts。

About a year ago, Aliprandi and the parents who raised him accepted an offer from the Plasters to move to their farm, where they built a home.(最后一段第一句)分析:本句是复合句。
根据第二段第一句“The chain of events started with Dimas...he grew up with.”
根据最后一段第一句中的“About a year ago,Aliprandi and the parents who raised him accepted an off er from the Plasters to move to their farm”并结合下一句可知,Dimas Aliprandi和他的父母现在同Plaster一家住在一起;再联系倒数第二段第一句中的“where Plaster lived with his parents,Nilza and Adelson,in the town of Santa Maria de Jetiba”可知,Plaster一家住在Santa Maria de Jetiba;由此可知,Dimas Aliprandi和父母现在住在Santa Maria de Jetiba。
根据第三段最后一句“They at first refused to believe theresults, but eventually decided to help him look for his biological parents.”
根据倒数第二段第二句“After tests, the Plasters discovered that Elton was the biological son of the man and woman that Dimas had been calling Mom and Dad for 24 years.”
故选A。
