Wuthering Heights which has long been one of the most popular and highly regarded novels in English literature, it has a secure position in the canon of world literature. As a shattering presentation of the doomed love between the passionate Catherine and Heathcliff, it remains one of the most haunting love stories in all of literature.In Wuthering Heights,Nature is represented by the Earnshaw family and especially Catherine and Heathcliff. These characters are governed by their emotions, not by reflection or ideals of civility. Wuthering Heights symbolized a similar wildness. On the other hand, Thrushcross Grange and the Linton family represent culture, refinement, convention, and cultivation. Wuthering heights, through a love tragedy, presented a picture of deformity of the social life and Outlines a kind of humanity twisted by society and all kinds of terrible events.The story ended with Heathcliff’s suicide. He died for love and his death shows his love to Katherine. He gave up the revenge to the younger generation after he knew that young Catherine and Harleton had fallen in love with each other shows that he was kind in nature. It was the cruel reality that twisted his humanity and made him become brutal and heartless. This kind of recovery of humanity was sublimation in spirit and it glared a kind of humanitarian ideal of the author and endows the terrible love tragedy some hope. Catherine and Heathcliff’s love is based on their shared perception that they are identical. As Catherine declares, “I am Heathcliff,” while Heathcliff, upon Catherine’s death, said that he cannot live without his “soul,” meaning Catherine.Catherine’s betrayal and her bitter destiny was the turning point of the whole story. It made Heathcliff change his love to hate. After Catherine died, the hate became the motivation of his revenge. He successfully attained his objective. WutheringHeights(呼啸山庄)1970经典电影英文影评Wuthering Heights(呼啸山庄)1970Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon take on the roles of Emily Bronte's star-crossed lovers in this 1930s adaptation of the classic novelSamuel Goldwyn said that this was his favourite of all the films he produced. It received no fewer than eight Oscar nominations back in the days when that really meant something and critics have often said that it's the greatest romantic film ever made. Unfortunately, for modern audiences at least, it doesn't live up to these grand expectations.The "vagabond gypsy boy" Heathcliff (played as a child by Rex Downing) arrives at Wuthering Heights and is taken in by the kind owner, Earnshaw (Kellaway). Heathcliff and the young Cathy Earnshaw (Sarah Wooton as the child) quickly become inseparable, though Heathcliff is loathed by the brattish Hindley (Scott) who spends most of his time horse-whipping him and throwing fake looking stones at his head. This is the weakest section of the film - the children slip in and out of American accents and Yorkshire burrs, the whiney, highly strung score is intrusive and the composition of the scenes is clumsy right down to the lighting (candles give off impossible light, shadows fall in the wrong direction). Fans of the book may have trouble accepting the camp, hammy Olivier as the dark and brooding Heathcliff and his performance lacks the power and bleakness necessary for a man consistently likened to "the devil himself". Furthermore, the landscape doesn't really look like Yorkshire and the screenplay is at first clunky and crude. Ben Hecht's and Charles MacArthur's episodic narrative jumps through the yearsat an alarming rate with clumsy interjections from a storytelling servant Ellen Dean (Robson) to keep slower audience members -and her entirely superfluous interlocutor Mr Lockwood (Mander) -abreast of what's going on. Fortunately matters improve as time moves on and the action intensifies. Heathcliff disappears and Cathy (now played by Merle Oberon) breaks both their hearts by marrying the moneyed Edgar Linton (David Niven). There are some genuinely intense scenes and Oberon is consistently impressive as the wild yet vulnerable Cathy, while Olivier musters some tenderness for the tragic and impressive final scenes. VerdictA torrid half an hour of passion at the end of this picture doesn't quite make up for the hour of drudgery that goes before it. And Laurence Oiivier's Heathcliff is nothing like as impressive as Timothy Dalton's from 1971.1。

The repetition of the characters’ names
The names of the second generation are the repetitions of the first one, such as Catherine and Linton.
Actually the story happens in a closed society, and the author hardly mentions anything about the outside world. But we can see the whole England from the closed society. It’s not only the love between Heathcliff and Catherine.
