How dare I ,Mrs read? How dare I ?Because it is the truth . you think I have no feelings ,and that I can do without one bit of love or kinders ,……

3. I'm lovin' it.(McDonald’s)

Every time a good time.(更多选择更多欢笑就在麦当劳)。

In presen ting and establishing heroine‟s character, Charlotte Bronte emphasizes that Jane‟s rebellious spirit stems from her childhood. Her hard struggles to retain her dignity as a human being and her insistence on liberty and equality with man deeply impress the readers. Through analysis of the characters‟dialogues and actions, Jane Eyre‟s strong personality is manifested at every stage of her life. However, as the proverb goes, nobody is perfect. Jane's character has obvious duality. On one hand, she is sincere, kind, beautiful in soul; she is full of strong sense of rebellious spirit, and strong sense of self-respect and bravely in pursuit of independence and equality. On the other hand, she is lack of confidence and always feels inferior. What‟s more, she pursu es love but obeys the conservative traditional marriage. This paper focuses on the heroine, Jane Eyre. It studies the dual personality in the character. It analyses Jane‟s personality from positive and negative aspects to interpret her objectively and comprehensively. Having made a detailed study on her dual character, we would have a better understanding of Jane Eyre.Key Words:Jane Eyre;character;duality;kindness;self—respect;independence ;inferiorityContentsⅠ.Introduction (1)Ⅱ.The Positive Characteristics of Jane Eyre (2)A. It is Charlotte Bronte‟s second novel and is one of her masterpieces. In this work, Charlotte Bronte pictures an amazing female heroine Jane Eyre in British Literature. Although having more than 152 years by now, this work is popular with lots of people because of its heroin Jane Eyre.As an English idiom goes, “Beauty is but skin-deep”. A person‟s great virtue, a noble soul, a beautiful heart can be called as an everlasting beauty. Jane Eyr e has a strong sense of feminist consciousness. She is brave and pursues love loyalty; she is tough when suffers from poverty and unfortunate things; she is in pursuit of freedom and persists in truth. These characteristics make her become the advanced and representative woman image in the history of western literature. Jane Eyre, the traditional women‟s rebel which is a glittering halo, covered on Jane‟s head. Indeed, Jane‟s outstanding character makes different times of the readers excited. But if we take calm and objective attitude to survey her again, she also has another side of negative characters and we will find shadows behind the glittering halo. Jane Eyre is sometimes sadly strayed into a strange circle, that is, she cannot escape the circle of hate. Under the seemingly appearance, Jane Eyre always hides aninferior and fragile soul at the bottom of her heart. Therefore, the positive and negative analysis of Jane‟s dual personality has important significance for us to understand her better.Ⅱ.The Positive Characteristics of Jane EyreEveryone has his or her own standard for what is beauty. Generally, there are two kinds of beauty, physical beauty and inner beauty. Our heroine Jane is an orphan, penniless and plain. It is not deniable that she is not beautiful in appearance. The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode, but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. “For a long time, only a person‟s great virtue, noble soul, beautiful heart can be called as an everlasting beauty, just as William Shakespeare said that beauty lived with kindness.”1Jane belongs to this kind of beauty woman. “You can have no money, can not be beautiful, but you must have character.”2Jane has unique character. Her rebellious spirit makes a lot of people admire her. Her kindness and beauty in soul makes her beauty everlasting. She bravely pursues independence and equality that arouses the feminist consciousness. These are charms of Jane. A. The Rebellious SpiritTo readers, Jane is a heroic figure who dares to struggle for the unfair fate. She is the representative of traditional women. Although Jane Eyre struggles for herself, not for all the poor traditional women, we should knowthat in the early years of the 19th century Victorian Age, it is a male-dominated and “money above all” society. Under such social environment, as a girl, she dares to challenge the unfair society. This requires much courage.Jane is a poor orphan who has no position at Gateshead. Jane belongs to the lower class. The ruling class is destined to oppress the lower class. Jane‟s instinct for self-assertion can only express itself in rebellion. Jane is a ten-year old orphan, much grumbled against by her aunt and ignored and abused by her three cousins. Jane takes refuge in a small breakfast-room where there many books. John Reed, calling Jane “bad animal”, frightens her from her threat. But she is honed by misfortune and suffering and formed the tenacious and stubborn disposition. She looks weak but the heart is strong. People can hardly believe that Jane contains an unyielding and enthusiastic soul under the plain appearance. She is intelligent and hardworking, intellectual and independent. She never indulges herself to do bad things though her status is humble. For her, everyone is equal before the God. She struggles for the equality of status, protects the independence of personality. She dared to revolt against the person who mistreated her when she was a child. For example, she shouted to John. Reed who purposely made difficulties for her, “You are just like a murderer, slave-driver, and Roman tyrant”! 3Moreover, she fights back John with her fists and also condemns Mrs. Reed‟s unequal treatment. After her giving vent to her accumulative resentment, she feels thatshe has got rid of the invisible fetters and finally fulfills the dream of freedom through fighting. Although she will be faced with cruel punishment, she is never afraid of it. She uses her vulnerable life to fight for the unequal society. Physically, she is the weak, a loser, but in spirit, she is the strong, a winner. Her tough spirit and courage to struggle with her life that makes others feel scared who want to bully her.Although Jane is a poor governess, the status is as low as a servant, she never discourages herself and she never feels herself inferior. Mr. Rochester who was born in a noble family is a rich and fashionable gentleman, but Jane only appreciates his tenacity, independence, kindness, and the inner noble character. For his wealth, her behavior is very indifferent. She is in pursuit of freedom and independence; she has found the position that really belongs to her.Jane expresses her rebellious spirit when St. John asks her to marry him. When she has known that he asks her to marry him only to find a companion or an assistant to go to work in India together, she answers angrily, “I despise your views towards love, I despise you dedicate the hypocritical affection, yes, St. John, you dedicate such affection, I despise you.”4Under such a male-dominated and male-respected society, Jane dares to speak out these words to a priest, which really requires great courage. As a rebellious fighter of the traditional women images, Jane should e respected and worshiped. But sometimes she regrettably enters into a strange circle, tries to struggle but cannot get rid of it all the time. And then, Jane has the multiple characters.B. Sincerity, Kindness and Beauty in SoulJane is unfortunate. She is an orphan, so brought up by her uncle. When she is ten years old, her uncle died too. Her life is miserable, and she has fully tasted the world‟s ruthlessness and coldness. Little Jane is left to live with her aunt Mrs. Reed who is cruel, despotic, prejudiced, harsh and unsympathetic. Mrs. Reed lets her son and daughters cluster round her perfectly happily and keeps little Jane at a distance. Mrs. Reed declares that Jane is not as important as a servant in her family. Other peoples do not give any sympathy to Jane because she is not pretty and her parents leave her nothing. Some of the servants have a prejudice against her. Furthermore, Jane is often beaten and insulted by her cousin John. Although these make Jane become melancholic, solitude, and silent but cannot make her become hardhearted and worldly-wise. Her mind is still filled with love. She never stares at anyone with hatred. Just as St. John gives the evaluation of Jane, “She is gentle, industrious, unselfish, loyal, persistent, brave, elegant, and very heroic.”5Jane is gentle but doesn‟t attach herself to an yone. She has her own unique opinions to everything and never drifts with the current. What‟s more, she dares to speak out her own opinions frankly. These would all depend on her passion for reading books. Book enriches her feelings, cultivates her temperament, and makes her considerate, frank, and sincere. When she firstformally meets with Mr. Rochester, she doesn‟t flatter him but answers his questions in truth, although he is her master. When Mr. Rochester asks Jane, “Do you find me handsome?” Sh e doesn‟t politely answer. “No, sir.” She blurts. Jane‟s each answer is actual, true and proper. At the same time, she is frank and has a pure heart. Therefore, Mr. Rochester is well disposed towards Jane and trusts her after talking with Jane. Jane is not only a trustworthy person, but also a special woman who can see through one‟s soul and enlighten others. When she finds Mr. Rochester is a “tired wild beast”, her kind heart perceives and hears the cry for help from him at once. She boldly steps forward and gives him her true love so that his cold and hard exterior face is filled with warmth and friendly smile. Jane uses her pure heart and intense love to make Mr. Rochester‟s indifferent and numb heart come to life gradually. When she expresses her love to him, her heart is pure and frank. She tells him that she is deeply in love with him and her fervent love has not any hypocrisy or disguise. But a great gap is between them. Wealth, status, and custom influenced Jane‟s decision more or less when she expresses her love. We don‟t see her escape her true feelings. This is Jane, genuine and credible.Jane was not born in upper class. She is in low position and her appearance is plain, but she is interested in reading so that she can learn the gist of beauty from books. Her extraordinary comprehension ability, excellent knowledge, and her natural sincerity and kindness make her shine out withsacred and beautiful brilliancy. Lots of people have a good impression on her when they come into contact with her. She corrects the shortcomings of Adele, the offspring of a French dancing girl, by using love, consideration and patience rather than prejudice. When her cruel, selfish aunt is seriously ill, she still goes to visit her and arranges the funeral for her aunt. From Jane‟s behaviors and the attitudes to the people around her, we can find her kindness and sincerity. Her sanctity and kindness add to her beautiful soul and the broad mind makes the other two women, Bertha and Ingram, become the foil for Jane. They two are noble, beautiful, and wealthy but they are cold-blooded, vainglorious, vulgar, and crabby. Compared with Jane‟s sanctity and elegant beauty, their so called vulgar beauty provides a perfect foil for Jane‟s beauty. C. Self-RespectJane Eyre is a poor but aspiring, small in body but huge in soul, obscure but self-respecting girl. After we close the covers of the book, after having a long journey of the spirit, Jane Eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think:We remember her goodness: for someone who lost arms and blinded in eyes, for someone who despised her for her ordinariness, and even for someone who had hurt her deeply in the past.We remember her pursuit of justice. It‟s like a companion with the goodness. But still, a virtuous person should promote the goodness on oneside and must check the badness on the other side.We remember her self-respect and the clear situation on equality. In her opinion, everyone is the same at the God‟s feet. Though there are differences in status、in property and also in appearance, but all the human being are equal in personality. We also remember her striving for life, her toughness and her confidence. When we think of this girl, what she gave us was not a pretty face or a transcendent temperament that make us admire deeply, but a huge charm of her personality. Actually, she was not pretty, and of course, the ordinary appearance didn‟t make others feel good of her, even her own aunt felt disgusted with it. And some others even thought that she was easy to look down on and to tease, so when Miss Ingram met Jane Eyre, she seemed quite contemptuous, for that she was obviously much more prettier than …the plain and ugly governess‟. But as the little governess had said: …Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!‟ This is the idea of equality in Jane Eyre‟s mind. God hadn‟t given her beauty and wealth, but instead, God gave her a kind mind and a thinking brain. Her idea self-respect impresses us so much and let us feel the power inside her body. She never feels herself inferior to Rochester though she is a humble family teacher. On the contrary, she thinks they are fair. Everybody should respect each other. At the time of marrying, she finds the fact that he has had a wife. She tells herself she must leave. She says to Rochester like this:“I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustainable I am, the more I will respect myself. I will keep the law given by God; sanctioned by man. I will hold to the principles received by men when I was sane and not mad—as I am now, laws and principles are not for the times when there is no temptation: they are for such moment as this, when body and soul rise in mutiny against their rigor; stringent are they; inviolate they shall be. If at my individual convenience I might break them, what would be their worth? Preconceived opinions, foregone determinations, are all I have at this hour to stand by: there I plant my foot.”6From this short passage, it can be seen Jane finds she is cheated; her self-respect is made fun of, because she loves Rochester sincerely. Nobody can bear this when faced with her lover. But Jane can. What‟s more, she makes a rational decision. Faced with so beautiful love and the temptation of rich life, she persists in her self-respect. At the end of this novel, though Thorn field is destroyed and Rochester is disabled, in this circumstance, Jane is no longer in a dilemma between love and self-respect. At the same time, she feels satisfied: she gets love and respect finally.D. Pursuit of Independence and EqualityThe independent spirit is another most important aspect attracting readers. Jane is expose to a hostile environment but continuously and fearlessly struggling for her ideal life. To some degree, the novel can beinterpreted as a symbol of the independent spirit. In Jane, unfairness and mistreatment force Jane to struggle for self-respect, while knowledge and worthwhile work provide her with enough economic supply to gain independence. From the beginning of the story,Jane Eyre is an orphan without parents.brothers and sisters. As an orphan whom Mrs. Reed doesn‟t prefer to adopt,Jane is an “external person’’an “alien’’“a person rather than servant”.In Gates head, she does not have a explicit position and identity. She lives upon others under the cold shoulder and loser intimation of the Aunts Reed. She is weak and plain no one likes her.Reality brings up her into a personality of solitary, sensitive and obstinate. This make her immature heart value herself especially in a early time.cherish her right and dignity as a human especially. She does not feel good about this environment, but she is not able to change it. She uses a pair of eyes of early —maturing child and a pure child s heart to observer and judge things around.Experiencing others feeling towards her, undergoing depression even enmity. She has a rich inner world but no one to tell, gradually bring up a personality of quiet and indifferent outside but passionate heart inside. This kind of ego mentality formed at an early age becomes a root in Jane Eyre s young heart.Jane shows her determination in pursuing her self-esteem and independence at every stage of her life, in struggling with social pressure and resisting the temptation of passion and love. In every relationship, Jane rises from inferiority to superiority, and finally gains full independence through continuous rebellion. It is known that in Jane‟s period men are superior to women. Men are everything. They have right to do everything. Women are only the slaves of men. Women have no status. The reason why Jane gets highly praise is that the author portrays an image out of ordinary. Jane is not reconciled to playing the role that the society appointed. She maintains her respect by her hard work, wisdom, and the strong individualism. She believes that human is equal at God‟s feet. She has told Rochester that “You think because I‟m poor, I‟m pain, I have no feelings? I promise you, if God is gifted me with wealth and beauty, I should make it does as hard for you to leave me just as for me to leave you now, but he did not. If my spirit can dress yours, as we both pass the grave stood before him equal.”7And the relationship between Jane and Rochester changes from host and servant to equal couple.Jane is poor but aspiring, small in body but huge in soul, obscure but self-respecting girl. After we close the covers of the book, after having a long journey of the spirit, Jane Eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think. When we think of this girl, what she gives us is not a pretty face and the transcendent temperament that make us admire deeply, but a huge charm of her personality that is her pursuit of independence and equality.Ⅲ.The Negative Characteristics of Jane EyreIn recent years, many critics analyze Jane‟s characters mainly from theaspects of her pursuing independence, equality, and freedom. Through the details, dialogues and psychological behavior, it catches another side of her characters: self-contempt, which is caused by her poverty and inequality to others. Much of her behavior in the name of love, belief, moral, and religion are rooted in her self-contempt. She struggles for independence and equality to conceal her feelings of inferiority. From this point, Jane is self-abased.When Jane decides to be far away from Mr. Rochester, on the surface, she is to maintain independent personality, refuses to become despised mistress. At the same time, it shows Jane‟s lo ve value is secular. It means that marriage is more important than love. But when Thornfield manor is burned down, Rochester is blind and disabled, Jane inherits huge heritage and accepts the marriage without hesitation. This embodies Jane acquiesces in the traditional and secular behavior principles. From this point, Jane worships the traditional marriage.A. Strong Sense of InferiorityJane is inferior. She never gets rid of the misfortune of psychological barriers. Inferiority not only can destroy a person but also can make a person succeed, makes people work hard and try to pull themselves together. While the latter function reflects into an extreme self-esteem on Jane, it is no exaggeration to say that all the efforts of Jane are around the word “inferiority”. Her character transfers from inferiority to self-esteem whichinterprets a new woman image that is from escape to struggle with reality and finally gains the love and happy life.In the book Inferiority and Beyond, A. Adler said: “The inferiority is not the symbol of abnormality, but a normal process of development when a person is in pursuit of superior position.”8 It is obvious that inferiority is a kind of common normal psychological state. It can lead people to be conscious of their own to determine accurately from the low towards high level, from ignorance into a profound person. The key is how to face inferiority, defeat the inferiority, make it transform and end it finally. Why Jane‟s inferiority is called eternal shadow? Because it has excee ded normal limits, and become the element of her personality. It repeatedly bothers her. For this kind of situation of Jane's, readers always give full understanding and compassion. But we should point out that Jane's image actually lost the "traditional betrayer" part of the sheen. We can see her utmost efforts to do so is the purpose of discarding inferiority and going beyond herself.Beauty is always a woman's capital. So far, in the long history of defining beauty, people have always loved beautiful women. Until now, the value of this trend has not changed. Due to a lack of beauty, poor women are always inferior in psychology, Jane is one of them.a. AppearanceFirst of all, Jane‟s inferiority is manifested in her small and unattractiv eexternal image. She is unable to resist the creator's arrangement. She is very sensitive about her little, delicate and unattractive appearance. Since childhood, Jane is deeply distressed for her mediocre appearance. When she is abused and locked in the red house by her aunt, she begins suffering from inferiority. “I knew that if I am a cheerful and well-behaved, carefree, beautiful naughty child--Even if I still want to rely on others to support, equally without friends--Mrs. Reed will be a little glad to see me, her children will treat me sincerely like partners, the servants also won‟t be so apt to put me in the nursery and be treated as the scapegoat.”9Thus, for the lonely and closed Jane, a mediocre appearance is really a kind of heavy psychological burden. In such a young age, she feels inferior to others because of the appearance. Her massive inferiority makes her keep quiet even when she is bullied. Jane spends her poor childhood in self-contempt. Unpleasantly, with her growth, this mood does not weaken instead grows up as quickly as sprout. She spends eight years at Lowood, suffers various insult there, punishment and malicious slander. She cannot lift her head under Brocklehurst‟s slander. She thinks everyone looks down upon her, nobody likes her. She wants to go to die, for her inferiority complex grows stronger day by day. If Jane has no encouragement and warmth from the kind, enthusiastic Miss Tam Boer, it is possible for her to give up and loaf away her life in the shackles of inferiority. Although she breaks the bondage, comes to a broad and quiet Thornfield and becomes a tutor to fend for herself, she still doesn‟t get rid of the heavy cross. When she first meets with Mr. Rochester, is attracted by his ugly appearance, rude behavior, and the same personality, she boldly approaches to him. These form the foundation for the future love affair. If Mr. Rochester is a handsome man, this beautiful love won't produce.b. Humble Status and PovertyJane‟s inferiority also expresses on her humble status a nd the lack of wealth. She is a daughter of a poor priest. She was born shortly after her parents died. Therefore, Jane has no prominent status, no noble friends, she is lonely. In Jane‟s period, people usually measure a person on the basis of wealth; she tastes worldly various flavors and understands the importance of money. Due to loneliness and helplessness, she feels inferior. Therefore, she always chooses to stay in an unnoticed place. This habit is the typical reflection of the thought of her inferiority. Owing to inferiority, she refuses Mr. Rochester‟s gifts repeatedly; owing to inferiority, she is suspicious of Mr. Rochester‟s love all the time. She confirms, “What is most disappointing, I remember that there is a larger ocean between me and the person I inevitably loved--wealth, status, custom.”10Jane cannot help denying, constraining, and enduring the love towards Mr. Rochester. Every sentence or even every touch does not come from the revelation of the mind but from the cautious rationality. And even when she finally confesses her love to Mr. Rochester, her brave pursuit of the equality of love is widely praised, but cannot removeher strong sense of inferiority.“Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and hea rtless?” 11she cries, “You think wrong! — I have as much soul as you, — and full as much heart! And if god had gifted me with some beauty, and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you through the medium of custom, conversation, nor even of mortal flesh; — it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave and we stood at God‟s feet, equal, —as we are!”12From these words, we can see Jane's longing for love. But this kind of courage and pursuit come from a fantastic hypothesis, that is, “if god had gifted me with some beauty, and much wealth” 13It means that because I am not beautiful and wealthy, I don‟t have love and happiness. In Jane's h eart, all the desire for love and happiness is only among the gift of god, beauty and wealth. She doesn't see the inner lofty spirit.Near the end of the novel, Jane Eyre returns to Thornfield. As a matter of fact, she has inherited heritage and got rid of the inferiority complex and obtained the psychological comfort, which made her have enough courage to face the rich lover. But the manor becomes ruins, Rochester becomes blind and disabled. However, her heart is filled with a quenchless joy. The reason is that there is no wealth and status gap between them, they are equal now. This delicate psychological activity is the result of her inferiority, which means thatJane's inferiority finally gets released. She doesn't have to hide in the shadows because of h er unattractive appearance; she doesn‟t have to try to abandon something because without money; she is filled with uncontrollable happiness and superior complex when she serves Rochester. Some readers will forgive her because of her spirit of striving for the self-esteem; this hits the main point and admits Jane‟s inferiority. Jane‟s strong sense of self-esteem comes from inferiority, which is at the bottom of her heart. Due to the inferiority, self-esteem becomes a powerful driving force that makes Jane become a cultured and attractive woman. In this sense, the original inferiority creates Jane‟s self-esteem.B. Strong Influence of Traditional MarriageInfluenced by the concept of traditional marriage, Jane pursues equality and over self-esteem in her own marriage. When she knows that Mr. Rochester has a mad wife, she chooses to surrender to the fate and escapes from her true love. She doesn‟t marry Mr. Rochester until Mr. Rochester blind and his wife die, Jane feels the real equality with Mr. Rochester,a. To surrender to the fateJane keeps her equal concept and self-esteem all the time to avoid being overthrown and destroyed in the battle of love and reason. But this self-esteem and pursuit of equality apparently refuse Mr. Rochester. Here,。
