Module 3 Literature[

Dickens' Literary Style and CharactersDickens' writing style is poetic, with a strong ic touch. His literary style is also a mixture of fantasy and realism. Many of his characters' names provide the reader with a hint as to the roles played in advancing the storyline, such as Mr.Murdstone in the novel DavidCopperfield, which is clearly a bination of “murder〞and stony coldness. One “character〞vividly drawn throughout his novels is London itself. From the coaching inns on the outskirts of the city to the lower reaches of the Thames, all aspects of the capital are described over the course of his body of work.Dickens is famed(著名的) for his description of the hardships of the working class, his intricate(错综复杂的) plots, and his sense of humour. But he is perhaps most famed for the characters he created. His novels created characters to whom readers could relate.Dickensian characters-especially their typical names, such as Oliver Twist,Pip,David Copperfield and so on-are among the most memorable in English literature.[诱思导学]1.What's Dickens' writing style?_______________________________________________2.What did Dickens describe most in his novels?_______________________________________________[答案] 1.Poetic and a mixture of fantasy and realism. 2.The hardships of the working class in old London.

Due to starvation, one of themintended to escape from the prison. He hadbeen arrested many times and therefore he accumulated a huge amount of experience. He lied to the prison guard and then hit him on the head. After that, he attained the keys and succeeded in escaping. The incident was brought to the attention of the government and the police began to chase him.It wasn’t long before the police accomplished the hard task and he was cast into prison again.I think he must be on trial.

1.A.before B.aheadC.ago D.coming解析:选B 通览全文可知,本文与未来百年的预言有关,ahead可以表示将来时间,而before, ago均表示过去,coming修饰名词时应置于其前。

故选B项。

2.A.made B.producedC.created D.contributed解析:选 A m ake predictions“做出预言”。

produce“生产(产品)”;create“创造(前所未有的东西)”;contribute“贡献,捐献”。

3.A.what B.howC.which D.that解析:选B 在该书中,弗莱德曼向世人展示了在未来一个世纪世界将如何变化。

4.A.changed B.doneC.discussed D.finished解析:选C 现在世人讨论的主要问题是如何养活不断增长的人口。

5.A.concern B.factC.problem D.challenge解析:选 D 弗莱德曼认为这种关注将被人口出生率下降的挑战所取代。

7.A.turns to B.keeps toC.comes to D.links to解析:选C 有关气候变化问题。

come to“涉及,论及”;turn to“转向”;keep to“遵守”;link to“联系”均与题意无关,予以排除。

8.A.sun B.earthC.moon D.space解析:选B 本段介绍了如何利用太阳能的情况。

9.A.other B.anotherC.the other D.the second解析:选C 前文称有两种方法,一种是用光缆,另一种是通过微波辐射。

the other“两者中的另一个”。

10.A.predictions B.problemsC.situations D.challenges解析:选A 本文与百年预言有关,前面讲了有关人口、气候的预言,这里讲关于政治的预言。

11.A.Poland B.MexicoC.Turkey D.the United States解析:选B 由常识可知,墨西哥和美国属于北美国家。

12.A.generally B.normallyC.properly D.eventually解析:选D 墨西哥对美国的霸权的憎恨最终会变得更强烈。

13.A.in case B.even thoughC.as though D.as if解析:选B 从逻辑关系来看,墨西哥对美国霸权的憎恨与两国间牢固的贸易关系形成了对比,因此用表示转折关系的连词even though“尽管”。

in case“以防”,as though 和as if都是“好像”的意思,这三项与题意无关。

14.A.it B.thereC.that D.one解析:选B 弗莱德曼称未来有可能发生世界大战。

15.A.time B.spaceC.the space D.the harbor解析:选B 这场战争将动用空间武器。
